Man Made Of Glass

Dan Wilson

© Tree Pub, BMI

Well it comes as a shock
To a man when he finds
That the strength of his back
And the strength of his will
Ain't enough to survive

It's quite a surprise
And it brings you down fast
When the need for one woman
Turns a tower of strength
To a man made of glass

It's a man made of glass
Now awaiting your answer
I'm a crystal Gibraltar
On the brink of disaster

You have only to say
You're gonna send me away
To bring on the crash
To shatter and smash
This man made of glass

And if the answer should be
That you have need of me
Then my strength is renewed
For clinging to you permanently

It's the life of a man
That you hold in your grasp
Don't throw it away
Hang on and save
This man made of glass

It's a man made of glass
Now awaiting your answer
I'm a crystal Gibraltar
On the brink of disaster

You have only to say
You're gonna send me away
To bring on the crash
To shatter and smash
This man made of glass

To bring on the crash
To shatter and smash
This man made of glass

Star-Studded Nights

Sonny Throckmorton

© Tree Pub, BMI

I met her in a small town down in Georgia
She loved me just like it would be the last
In her easy southern way she come to vogue ya
She'd talk you slow and Lord she'd love you fast

She showed me star studded nights ooh flashin' lights
Sweet Georgia sights oh oh star studded nights
Like a soft southern breeze she brought me to my knees
And that Georgia girl's alright with her star studded nights

And like a fool I got the urge for goin'
I'm fully realizin' where I've been
And after time how I could not be knowin'
And I'd never like the likes of her again

She showed me star studded nights ooh flashin' lights...
She showed me star studded nights ooh flashin' lights...

Never Take Candy From A Stranger

Dan Wilson

© Tree Pub, BMI

The old man squints and locks the door behind him
Goes down to the park each afternoon
And as he turns he sees a youth approaching
The boy says Mister could I sell a little candy to you

You say the money's for the local school kids
Well ain't you kinda old to be in school
I'm just helpin' out my younger brother
The old man says well alright guess I'll take a bar of candy or two

Normally you see I buy some candy at the store
Share it with the kiddies in the park
You're savin' me some steps and an old man's precious time
By showin' up just now with candy bars

The old man makes his way out to the park bench
The one he's perched on every day for years
And he sits and dreams of yesterdays and old friends
Till footsteps and a little child's laughter reach his ears

Sonny would you like a bite o' chocolate
I see your eyes light up and I guess you would
I bought it from a young man just at lunchtime
Now let's just unwrap this'un here and you and me'll see if it's any good

Suddenly the boy's mother hits him like a stone
Screamin' like her son's in mortal danger
But he might be some kinda weirdo boy with poison or dope
Don't you never take candy from a stranger

The old man sighs and shakes his head alone now
Says she could use a little faith in her fellow man
I'm just a harmless fella and I'm lonely
And I come here to pretend these are the children I never had

A patrolman finds his body in the subway
And somebody says How'd he die he says I guess just old age
But he finds a partly eaten bar of chocolate
While the breezes in the park blow candy wrappers away

Am I Gonna Have To Burn Atlanta Down

Bobby Borchers - Ed Bruce - Patsy Bruce

© Tree Pub, BMI

I always thought your feet were stuck in Georgia clay
Never dreamed you had such big ideas
But now that city man has taken you away
And it just might take me a hundred years

To find you but I will no matter where you are
Somehow I will make it up to you
I know in my own mind you haven't gone too far
I'll find you cause I know you want me to

But am I gonna have to burn Atlanta down (Down down down)
I know you're hidin' somewhere in this town
There's no place you can go where you can't be found
But am I gonna have to burn Atlanta down

Last year I heard you had gone out Texas way
But Texas cowboys never were your style
But don't give up on me I'll find you any day
It just looks like it might take a while

And am I gonna have to burn Atlanta down (down down down)
I know you're hidin' somewhere in this town
There's no place you can go where you can't be found
But am I gonna have to burn Atlanta down

Am I gonna have to burn Atlanta down (down down down)
I know you're hidin' somewhere in this town
There's no place you can go where you can't be found
But am I gonna have to burn Atlanta down

Texas (When I Die)

Bobby Borchers - Ed Bruce - Patsy Bruce

© Tree Pub, BMI

When I die I may not go to heaven
I don't know if they let cowboys in
If they don't just let me go to Texas
Cause Texas is as close as I've been

New York couldn't hold my intention
Detroit City couldn't sing my song
If tomorrow finds me busted flat in Dallas
I won't care cause at least I'll know I'm home

When I die I may not go to heaven...
[ instrumental ]
I'd ride through all of hell and half in Texas
Just to hear some steel guitar and a cowboy song
The beer just stain as cold in old Milwaukee
My body's here but my soul's in San Antone

When I die I may not go to heaven...
When I die I may not go to heaven...

Love Somebody To Death

Red Lane - Glenn Martin

© Tree Pub, BMI

I ain't never robbed or beat up on nobody
I ain't never failed no lie detector test
But tomorrow I'm gonna be the town's most wanted man
Cause tonight I'm gonna love somebody to death

I'm gonna shave shower shine my shoes and shampoo
Break out my pinstriped suit with the matchin' vest
Climb in my four hundred horse widetrack rollin' apartment van
Tonight I'm gonna lay some heart to rest

Tomorrow my face will be all over the post office wall
The town will put a price upon my head
You'll be lookin' at some happy lady's most wanted man
Cause tonight I'm gonna love somebody to death

I'm gonna grab her kiss her squeeze her please her and show her no mercy
Premeditated lovin' at its best
It'll take seven days to get the smile off the corpus delighted
Because tonight I'm gonna love somebody to death
[ instrumental ]
See that shady character smilin' on the six o'clock news
Front page color Associated Press
You'll be lookin' at some happy lady's most wanted man
Cause tonight I'm gonna love somebody to death

I'm gonna grab her kiss her squeeze her please her and show her no mercy
Premeditated lovin' at its best
It'll take seven days to get the smile off the corpus delighted
Cause tonight I'm gonna love somebody
Tonight I'm gonna love somebody
Tonight I'm gonna love somebody to death
Yeah mama it's gonna be you

I Can't Seem To Get The Hang Of Telling Her Goodbye

Ed Bruce

© Tree Pub, BMI

I've never seen the rodeo in Cheyenne
It's supposed to be a sight I understand
Well I could start today
I've got the time and it's all mine

Maybe on from there to Northern California
Say I wonder what she's doin'
Someone said he heard they had some trees growin' clear up to the sky
But I can't seem to get the hang of tellin' her goodbye

It's funny how the big trucks in the night
Sound so lonesome when everything is quiet
It's strange to think there's someone left
With someplace left to go

Maybe I should stop on down the road and eat a bite and rest a while
God I hope she's well
Maybe if I'm tired enough I'll sleep tonight I can try
But I can't seem to get the hang of tellin' her goodbye

Better check the tires when I stop for gas again
The radio just said it's gonna rain
But I don't mind the rain and when it's warm
I like to walk out in a storm

And it's funny things you think of drivin' through the night alone
And baby never liked the rain
I can't help but wonder does it hurt this much to die
But I can't seem to get the hang of tellin' her goodbye

The Wedding Dress

Ed Bruce - Ronnie Stoneman

© Tree Pub, BMI

For sale cheap one white wedding dress train and veil never used

Reading the paper and drinking my coffee this morning
State lost its last game
There wasn't much on the front page
And Charlie Brown had an other bad day

I had a few minutes till I left for work
So I turned to the want ads to kill some time
And I had to wonder about the personal columns
Last item on page thirty-five

For sale cheap one white wedding dress train and veil never used

The number's familiar
I notice the name hasn't changed
Should I try to call her
Should I try to make it up now

Could be she's forgiven and she might not hang up
Maybe time has tore down the wall
And she might still have it we might still use it
Maybe no one has had time to call

For sale cheap one white wedding dress train and veil never used

I've Not Forgot Marie

Ed Bruce

© Tree Pub, BMI

I've not forgot Marie
I remember how she used to toss
And shake her honey colored hair
And I can close my eyes and almost feel
The warmth of her beneath my hands
And as I lie here in the night and hug my pillow to my chest
I feel the call the need in me
I've not forgot Marie

But I don't talk about Marie
It's more than I can stand to have her on my mind
And never in my arms
The fever that I feel inside for her becomes a chill I can't control
And as I lie here starin' through the bars
And fight for sleep I wonder
Was it worth the things she did to me
I've not forgot Marie

I remember how it was when we first tasted love
But I can't recall just where it started goin' wrong
But I can hear her scornful laugh and see the Devil in her eyes
And feel her throat once warm and soft and so alive
And if I ever even thought that it might end
I never thought that it would end the way it did
Me killin' her for lovin' him
Lord I've not forgot Marie

There Ain't No Good Chain Gang

Hal Bynum - Dave Kirby

© Tree Pub, BMI

Bet it ain't a rainin' back home
Bet your sister's still on the phone
Bet mama's in the kitchen cookin' fried chicken
Wishin' that I hadn't done wrong

Oh but mama don't you worry about me now know it's gonna be alright
They teach me a lot of new things in here
Things like

There ain't no good in an evil hearted woman
And I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James
And you don't go writin' hot checks down in Mississippi
And there ain't no good chain gang

Papa's readin' yesterday's mail
Wishin' that the hay was all baled
And I betcha he was wishin' we was goin' fishin'
Instead of me sittin' in jail

Well papa don't you worry bout it now everything's gonna be alright
They're teachin' me a lesson I've already learned a lot already
Things like

There ain't no good in an evil hearted woman...
There ain't no good in an evil hearted woman...
There ain't no good in an evil hearted woman...
