I stopped at a road house in Texas
Twas a little place called Hamburger Dan's
I heard that jukebox playin'
Song called a Truck Drivin' Man
The waitress then brought me some coffee
I thanked her then called her again
I said that old song sure does fit me
Cause I'm a truck drivin' man
Pour me another cup of coffee
For it is the best in the land
I'll put a quarter in the jukebox
And I'll play that Truck Drivin' Man
[ guitar ]
Well I climbed back aboard my old semi
Then like a flash I was gone
I got them old truck wheels a rollin'
I'm on my way to San Antone
When I get my call up to glory
They'll take me away from this land
I'm gonna head this old truck up to heaven
Cause I'm a truck drivin' man
Pour me another cup of coffee...
And I'll play that Truck Drivin' Man

I was pullin' up a hill that's known as the Devil's Crest
Haulin' 36 ton on a run called the Nitro Express
There was nothin' but curves a runnin' from the top on down
And at the bottom of the grade sat a quiet little country town
Well I was drivin' off the top when she jarred and the driveshaft broke
Started pumpin' up the brakes saw 'em going in a big cloud of smoke
To keep 'er upright I knew I had to do my best
Against a runaway bomb they call the Nitro Express
There was 36 ton of a detonated steel
Over 18 tires that smoked and squealed
I had to ride her down and I couldn't jump free
Or there'd be a big hole where that little town used to be
[ instrumental ]
Well that old trailer leaned each time that I took another curve
My hands started sweatin' and I knew I was losin' my nerve
And I was cussin' each rock and every inch of the Devil's Crest
A fightin' with the wheel of a rig called the Nitro Express
I side-swipped a mountain so I'd slow her down by rubbin' her side
And when the sparks started flyin' man it looked like the 4th of July
I finally got her stopped but mister I'm a gonna confess
That's the last run I'm makin' in a rig called the Nitro Express
There was 36 ton of a detonated steel...
There was 36 ton of a detonated steel...

It was his first trip to Boston in a big long diesel truck
It was his first trip to Boston he was a havin' lots of luck
He was headed the wrong direction down the one way street in town
And this is what he said when the police chased him down
Give me forty acres and I'll turn this rig round
It's the easiest way that I found
Some guys can turn on a dime or turn it right downtown
But I need forty acres to turn this rig around
When he finally found where to outload he had the dreadful shot
His trailer pointed toward the road and his cab right to the dock
And as he looked around him through his tears he made the sound
Oh give me forty acres and I'll turn this rig round
Give me forty acres and I'll turn this rig round...
[ guitar ]
When he finally got unloaded he was glad to leave that town
He was feelin' fairy happy goin' back to Alabam
And up ahead he saw a sign said you are northward bound
He said give me forty acres and I'll turn this rig round
He was drivin' down the right lane when ahead he saw a sign
Yet to make the left turn but he could not gettin' in line
The tears were streamin' down his cheeks and they all heard him yell
Give me forty sticks of dynamite and I'll blow his rig to hell
Give me forty acres and I'll turn this rig round...

I drove a big old truck from Mississippi all the way cross country to Frisco
I got another load then I was on my way again back to where that Mississippi flows
I like to hear that rhythm as that motor purrs along
And them big wheels a keep rollin' clear and free
I'd rather drive a truck than to be a millionaire it's the only life for me
Cause my grandpa drove a mule train and my pa a riverboat
And I just a like a them I'm gonna see lots of land
My grandpa drove a mule train and my pa a riverboat
I'm just like them I'm a motivatin' man
[ guitar ]
I met a pretty girl while down in Dallas I thought that we would marry up
But I lost my nerve when we got to the church
And I climbed back aboard my old truck
For I got to thinkin' things over married life is not for me I'm sure
I don't want a woman to tell me that I can't drive my truck anymore
Cause my grandpa drove a mule train and my pa a riverboat...
I'm just like them I'm a motivatin' man

Big Mack was a driver of a semi rig from Denver to the coast of Maine
And every truck driver and highway man well they all knew big Mack's name
He stepped into a diner by the scales where he stopped to weigh
Took one look at the waitress there and we all heard him say
Pour me a piece of coffee pass me a cup of bread
Why you're the sweetest things that I've ever seen and there's a ringing in my head
Make my eggs a medium rare over easy with my steak
I'm gonna buy you a farm in Texas gal if it takes every sin I make
[ piano ]
Well she stood there a starin' at Big Mack kind of in a state of shock
She told him when he set his orange juice down be careful now it's kinda hot
I've already buttered your coffee the toast is in your cup
Your French fried soup and scrambled prunes will soon be coming up
She took off her apron grabbed her coat down off the rack
Took Big Mack's arm and told the boss I'm a quittin' and I won't be back
She climbed up in that diesel cab both pipes were a spoutin' smoke
Someone said Big Mack just fell and this time it ain't no joke
Pour me a piece of coffee pass me a cup of bread...

Well I pulled outta Pittsburgh a rollin' down that Eastern Sea board
I got my diesel wound up and she's a runnin' like a never before
There's a speed zone ahead alright I can't dodge all the cops in sight
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
I got me ten forward gears and my George overdrive
I'm takin' little white pills and my eyes are open wide
I just passed a Jimmy in white I been a passin' everything in sight
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
Well it seems like a month since I kissed my baby goodbye
I could have a lotta women but I'm not that kind of a guy
I could find one to hold me tight but I could never make believe it's alright
Six days on the road and I'm a gonna make it home tonight
[ guitar ]
Well the ICC is checkin' on down the line
I'm a little overweight and my log book's way behind
But nothin' bothers me tonight I could dodge all the scales alright
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
My rig's a little old but that don't mean she's slow
She's got a flame from her stack and that smoke's some blowin' like it's cold
My hometown's a comin' in sight if you think I'm a happy you're right
Six days on the road and I'm a gonna make it home tonight
Six days on the road and I'm a gonna make it home tonight
Six days on the road and I'm a gonna make it home tonight

I'm a rollin' this Jimmy on home my bones are tired and my eyes are red
I know the little woman's sawin' lots of logs on a great big king size bed
My best friend Saul installed me a sleeper on my rig for a pretty price too
But I ain't had much sleep these last ten days cause that sleeper's just five by two
Saul said Red that's a comfortable bed it's gonna seem like a paid vacation
But that little bitty runt is either pullin' a stunt or got no imagination
With your elbow in your nose and the other one in your toes
And a jack tryin' to run you clean through
Show me how to get some sleep in a sleeper five by two
[ guitar ]
I had to move that load on down the road cause I've got a deadline to keep
But I'm gettin' just a little more burned everyday cause I'm gettin' just a little less sleep
Well both of my knees are gaulded and there's a burn up the side of my head
I can't afford a room cause I got a lotta bills and one is that king size bed
Well that little bitty sleeper on the back of my cab ain't fit for a rabbit hutch
Saul might a went to college but if he did he didn't acknowledge much
But if I wake up I'm gonna look Saul up and make him know what I've been through
He's gonna show me how to sleep in a sleeper five by two
[ guitar ]
Coffee's keepin' me straight but I'm in terrible shape to show for twenty tons of steel
But if you never been a fish in a sardine can then you couldn't figure how I feel
I think I've had enough this road's too tough I'm gonna find me a brand new rig
But first I'm gonna hit that king size bed and pull me a Rip Van Winkle
Well that sleepers gotta go or my name ain't Joe and I hope that lightnin' strikes me
I'll just lay there gettin' covered up in sweat wonderin' who up there don't like me
I'm a gonna tell Saul all I need is one more friend like you
Cause a torture chamber is what he's built it's a hot box five by two
Yeah show me how to get some sleep in a sleeper five by two

Rollin' I go rollin' along
I'm listenin' to that diesel hum a song
Well I'm just as happy as I can be
Cause my pretty baby she's a waitin' for me
So come on truck yeah take me on home
I'm longin' just to hold her again
And I miss her and want to kiss her again
We've been on the road for a long long time
But we'll get some rest at the end of the line
So come on truck take me on home
[ guitar + steel ]
Stoppin' stop just outside of town
At the truck stop where all the truckers hang around
Oh we got some cleanin' up to do
I need the shavin' you need a wash job too
So come on truck yeah take me on home
Come on truck let's go now gettin' close to home
There's the lights of that city and that's pretty

All you big and barely men who roll the trucks along
Better listen you'll be thankful when you hear my song
You have really got it made if you're haulin' goods
Anyplace on earth but those Hangsville Woods
It's a stretch of road up north in Maine
That's never ever ever seen a smile
If they'd buried all the truckers that's lost in them woods
There'd be a tombstone every mile
When you're loaded with potatoes and you're headed down
You've got to drive the woods to get to Boston town
When it's winter up in Maine you'd better check it over twice
Cause that Hangsville road is just a ribbon of ice
It's a stretch of road up north in Maine...
[ guitar ]
When you're talkin' to a trucker that's been haulin' goods
Down that stretch of road in Maine they call the Hangsville Woods
He'll tell you that dyin' and goin' down below
Won't be half as bad as drivin' on that ice and snow
It's a stretch of road up north in Maine...
There'd be a tombstone every mile

She's always a waitin' with two loving arms when I get home
She tells me that she's lonely every minute while I'm gone
She keeps begging me to quit this road but I can't quit that's true
Cause I was born to be a trucker and that's all I wanna do
Well I would like to work in town but I can't I'm afraid
Cause you can't get a job in town unless you gotta trade
And the only trade I know is drivin' this old truck that's true
Cause I was born to be a trucker and that's all I wanna do
Born to be a trucker drivin' this old truck across the nation
Born to be a trucker that's my only occupation
I guess I'll keep on driving these trucks till I get old
Cause it's the only way of livin' this poor boy knows
Well I could have been a business man if I just gone to school
But I was born to be a trucker and that's all I wanna do
[ steel ]
Born to be a trucker drivin' this old truck across the nation...
I was born to be a trucker and that's all I wanna do

I'm a drivin' this truck for a mountain road
I got a hot rod rig and I'm a flyin' low
My eyes are filled with diesel smoke
Air fan curves ain't no joke
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
I was out last night drinkin' beer with the guys
Got an achin' head and blood shot eyes
I ended up with a pretty little dame
I didn't even know her name
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
If I deliver this hot shot plate
I gotta get a goin' cause I'm runnin' late
These mountain grades are mighty steep
Can't stay away there ain't had no sleep
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
[ guitar ]
There's a cute little waitress at the bottom of the grades
She's got hot coffee already made
I gotta keep my eyes upon the road
Cause I'm goin' down the hill heavy load
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
Well I must have closed my eyes for a while
Cause here I am and I'm a runnin' wild
I turn my brakes strip my gears
Gonna have to ride her down I fear
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
I wish I'd left the wind alone
But it's too late now cause I think I'm gone
I got myself into this fix
Just because I drive to mix
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
Diesel smoke dangerous curves

Well I drove the truck from New York all the way to San Antone
And that's a mighty long haul when you're all alone
But I like drivin' trucks and I make my livin' this way
Well I'm a truck drivin' fool and that's how I'm a gonna stay
I like to hear that diesel as it keeps on a hummin' along
I'm a shiftin' these gears and I'm singin' myself a song
Well I see a lotta country as I go on my way
Yeah I'm a truck drivin' fool and that's how I'm a gonna stay
Yeah I'm a truck drivin' fool and trucks have got the best of me
I guess I'll never settle down cause I couldn't stay you see
Cause when I'm drivin' that truck I'm like a schoolboy out to play
Yeah I'm a truck drivin' fool and that's how I'm a gonna stay
[ guitar ]
Once I started to marry a gal in a little country town
But she didn't like my truck so way went around and around
She tried to affect me and that's where she went astray
Cause I'm a truck drivin' fool and that's how I'm gonna stay
I'm a truck drivin' fool and that's how I'm a gonna stay

Hello I'm a truck
You've heard songs about truck drivers many times their stories told
How they pulled out of Pittsburgh for six days on the road
About the Feather River Canyon and climbin' the old grapevine
That old roadhouse down in Texas and the girls they've left behind
You've heard their tales of daring and I think that's just fine
But if you can spare a minute well I'd like to tell you mine
There'd be no truck drivers if it wasn't for us trucks
No double clutching gear jammin' coffee drinking nuts
They'll drive their way to glory and they have all the luck
There'd be no truck drivers if it wasn't for us trucks
Well there he sits in that cafe drinking coffee and tellin' lies
Probably telling 'em how he topped that hill ten miles back
He ought to tell 'em how he missed a gear
And that Volkswagen bus full of hippies passed us like I was sitting up on jacks
Or how we took that curve over on 66
Hadn't been for me hanging on the shoulder we'd both wound up in the ditch
If we're on time he takes the credit if we're late I get the blame
Up those hills with shutters open my stacks are runnin' flame
My tach runnin' red line sucking diesel from the tanks
I take him south and bring him back without a word of thanks
So now you've heard my story and I guess it's my tough luck
There'd be no truck drivers if it wadn't for us trucks
There'd be no truck drivers if it wasn't for us trucks
No double clutching gear jammin' coffee drinking nuts
They'll drive their way to glory and they have all the luck
There'd be no truck drivers if it wasn't for us trucks
Look at him sipping coffee and flirtin' with that waitress
And where do you think he left me that's right next to cattle truck (moo)
Why couldn't we have put me next to that little pink Mack sittin' over there
Gosh she's got pretty mud flaps and talk about stacked they're both chromed
Well he'll be coming out in a minute and he'll get that bar
And he'll go around and beat on my tires
You know for two pints of diesel I'd have a flat on the inside dual
Ha that'd fix him
I never did like the way he drives anyhow
Thinks he's God's gift to waitresses he never gives 'em a tip
Well I know what he's gonna do now
He's gonna take out The tape cartridge of Buck Owens and play it again
I don't know why he don't get a Merle Haggard tape
