They call him a Flat Foot they say he's a square
But when you're in danger Flat Foot he's there
He's a Johnny Law he's Johnny Law
A he's a Johnny Law a helpin' everyone he can
If a thief should rob you and take all that you own
Flat Foot's gonna git him and put him where he belongs
He's a Johnny Law he's Johnny Law...
[ instrumental ]
Flat Foot he's a workin' man just like you and I
Except he's got a mighty big job tryin' to keep us alive
He's a Johnny Law he's Johnny Law...
You can talk about him say just what you please
But if we didn't have old Flat Foot what would happen to you and me
Without Johnny Law
Johnny Law he's Johnny Law he's Johnny Law
A he's a Johnny Law a helpin' everyone he can

You've really made an effort with the kids here in your town
You talked to them bout safety and bout keepin' speedin' down
And then you hear somebody talkin' low
He's just a silly stupid cop on Highway patrol
You stop them on the highway and each time you will explain
A car is like a weapon and that drivin's not a game
They'll listen and they'll be polite to you
But you can't see the things you say just ain't gettin' through
It makes you mad man sad man but don't let it show
Though some call you bad man Highway patrol
[ instrumental ]
And then one day you get a call from just outside of town
Torn and broken bodies scattered all around the ground
You do your best at holdin' back the tears
Cause not a single one of them is over eighteen years
It makes you sad man mad man but don't let it show...

Well I stopped where you were a workin'
And just have a cup of coffee or two
And it was there you stole my heart from me
You made me fall in love with you
So you're under arrest and your sentence is life
Yeah you're under arrest you gotta be my wife
Well you know sweet thing you broke Cupid's law
And honey that's a crime
So you'd better come along with me peaceable
Cause now you've gotta be mine
And you're under arrest and your sentence is life...
[ instrumental ]
Well you started to riot within my heart
And made me fall in love
So I'm a gonna lock you in solitary
And I'll feed you on kisses and hugs
Cause you're under arrest and your sentence is life...
For the rest of your life you gotta be my wife

I's havin' a drink one Saturday night
Big Joe Hooker tried to start a fight
Now Joe was drunk and he was tough to beat
Stood six foot five in his stockin' feet
Joe laughed out loud and pulled a knife
He told everyone he's gonna take my life
He's too big to fight so I turn and ran
And I bumped right into sheriff Sam
Sheriff told Joe to go on home
Sober up and leave the bottle alone
But big Joe laughed he was a mean mean man
And I started to pray for sheriff Sam
Now ole Sam's hair was gettin' gray
And I begged the sheriff to turn away
But he just looked at me with an easy grin
Said he was sheriff and he'd run Joe in
Well Hooker made a swing with that deadly knife
But Sam he just stepped aside
And Hooker hit the floor and there he stayed
Cause Sam hit him with a blow that shook the whole place
When it was all over I could hardly believe
That it was big Joe down there on his knees
Cause I thought Joe was a mighty rough man
But he don't hold a candle to sheriff Sam
Now ole Sam's been our sheriff for thirty years
I'm his deputy now and mighty glad he's here
When he needs some help well I give him a hand
But they don't make 'em anymore like sheriff Sam

Sidewalk patrol sidewalk patrol
I've been here for a year or so
But sometimes I still get jumpy I know
While I'm walkin' talkin' to myself on sidewalk patrol
This sidewalk it gets mighty hard and I walk on it ev'ry night
Checking out all the stores in town makin' sure that ev'rything's all right
I'm a looking out for prowlers on the midnight scene
And I'll bet those prowlers are looking out for me
Sidewalk patrol sidewalk patrol...
Ting dag ting dag ting dag thing dag
Ting dag ting dag ting dag thing dag
Ting dag ting dag ting dag thing dag
Ting dag ting dag ting dag thing dag
One night while I was on patrol there to my surprise
I passed by this big window and I thought I saw somebody inside
So I reached for my revolver and then I had to laugh
Cause the guy I saw in there was me it was my reflection in the window glass
Sidewalk patrol sidewalk patrol...
Ting dag ting dag ting dag thing dag
Ting dag ting dag ting dag thing dag

Up and down the long ole highway up and down I go
Tryin' to keep the peace and the speeders down
Well a that's how I make my dough
I'm workin' for the highway patrol
Well it's work time again I hate to see it come but ev'ry night at seven it arrives
I had to check out my car and put on my gun and go out and try to save some lives
There's all kind of people a drivin' the highway the good and the bad are found
And you never ever know just what to expect when you chase a speeding car down
Still I go up and down the long ole highway up and down I go
I'm tryin' to keep the peace and the speeders down
Well that's how I'm makin' my dough
I work for the highway patrol
[ instrumental ]
Well there's con men convicts and wise guys they think they know it all
And they'd just as soon pull out a pistol and say okay copper get lost
Well it's a rugged old life we're a livin' as we live it from day to day
But it's a kind of a life I'm a lovin' the best I wouldn't have it any other way
So I go up and down the long old highway up and down I go...
Yeah I'm workin' for the highway patrol
I'm just a workin' for the highway patrol
I'm workin' for the highway patrol

Well the rules of the road are posted ever'where you go
From New York City to San Francisco
But you people keep a speedin' just as fast as you can go
And a payin' no attention at all to the rules of the road
Well if your foot's a little heavy on the gas then you had better listen
You better slow it down buddy or you will soon be a missin'
You better read and obey all the rules of the road it's true
Cause the life you save just might belong to you
Well the rules of the road are posted ever'where you go...
[ instrumental ]
Well if you had a little toddy for the body then you'd better not drive
You better stay at home and drink if you aim to stay alive
Cause drinkin' and drivin' well buddy that's a mighty big load
And when your head is woosy well you can't read the rules of the road
Well the rules of the road are posted ever'where you go...
And payin' no attention at all to the rules of the road

Mary oh Mary where can you be
Mary oh Mary I wish you were here with me
Mary said that she loved me but could never be my wife
As long as I wore a gun and a star she was afraid I'd lose my life
Said she couldn't stand the sorrow if with death I should meet
From some gangster's bullet on some deserted street
She told me that her father had died not long ago
And that he had worked for the law for twenty years or so
And she saw her mother's sorrow when they gave her the bad news
That he'd been killed in the line of duty by a prowler on the loose
Mary oh Mary where can you be...
Then last night I chased a speeding car that was coming through our town
I turned on my lights and siren but they wouldn't slow down
Then I saw a flash of gun smoke and I began to fall
And then I thought of Mary and that's all that I recall
I see an angel at my side am I at heaven's gate
But the angel she is cryin' wait a minute that's Mary's face
And then I hear her whisper I love you
And if you still want me then I will marry you
Mary oh Mary I wanna be where you are
Mary oh Mary I'm turnin' in my star

I got a star on my car and one on my chest
A gun on my hip and the right to arrest
I'm the guy who's the boss on this highway
So watch you what you're doin' when you're drivin' my way
If you break the law you'll hear from me I know
I'm a workin' for the state I'm the highway patrol
Well you'll know me when you'll see me cause my door's painted white
With my siren a screamin' and my flashin' red light
I work all day and I have all eyes
Just to keepin' law and order tryin' do what's right
If I write you out a ticket then you'd better drive slow
I'm just a doin' my job I'm the highway patrol
I'm the highway patrol the highway patrol
My hours are long and my pay is low
But I'll do my best to keep you drivin' slow
I'm just a doin' my job I'm the highway patrol
[ instrumental ]
Well if you're drivin' too fast like you shouldn't do
You can bet your boots I'm comin' after you
If you wanna race then get on a race track
Or if you try to run away I'm gonna bringin' a you back
I'm here to keep all the speeders drivin' slow
I'm just a doin' my job I'm the highway patrol
Well I'm the highway patrol...
I'm just a doin' my job I'm the highway patrol

Ooh well today marks the day now for twenty-five years I've been a highway patrolman
I've made a lot of friends down through the years and I'll always remember them
From my days as a rookie right up to now I've loved my job you see
But now they say it's time for me to rest so they're retirin' me
Well they gave me a shiny gold watch and a long shiny gold chain
They say I'll have a pension for life but life just won't be the same
Cause I won't know what to do with myself just stayin' at home all day
Cause I've been with the law now for half of my life and I'm used to livin' this way
Twenty-five years twenty-five years twenty-five years on patrol
I just checked in my uniform and the badge that I've worn so long
I can't use 'em anymore now 'cause can't wear 'em around home
It just won't be the same anymore stayin' at home all day
But I can't stay here at the station cause well I'd just be in their way
I shook hands with the Captain and the boys all told me goodbye
And as I walked out of the station I felt part of me die
Cause I knew that I wouldn't be back and things wouldn't be the same
Cause now they say that I'm too old and I guess time's the one to blame
Twenty-five years twenty-five years twenty-five years on patrol
Twenty-five years twenty-five years now they say that I'm too old
And there'll be no more patrol for me oooh

Law and order in this old town
So if you do somethin' wrong I'm gonna run you down
Well we're peaceful folks we're gonna stay that way

So if trouble's your business then you better get out
