I stopped at a road house in Texas
Twas a little place called Hamburger Dan's
I heard that jukebox playin'
Song called a Truck Drivin' Man
The waitress then brought me some coffee
I thanked her then called her again
I said that old song sure does fit me
Cause I'm a truck drivin' man
Pour me another cup of coffee
For it is the best in the land
I'll put a quarter in the jukebox
Änd I'll play that Truck Drivin' Man
[ instrumental ]
Well I climbed back aboard my old semi
Then like a flash I was gone
I got them old truck wheels a rollin'
I'm on my way to San Antone
When I get my call up to glory
They'll take me away from this land
I'm gonna head this old truck up to heaven
Cause I'm a truck drivin' man
Pour me another cup of coffee...
And I'll play that Truck Drivin' Man

I'm going down to Feather River Canyon gotta go down Diner Some it is closed
Another eighty miles and I sure am lonesome cause I'll be late gettin' home
Roll truck roll take me to my baby I'm tired of bein' alone
Roll truck roll I wanna see my baby roll truck roll me on home
One of these days I'm gonna quit this old road when I've saved enough money
Gonna buy me a place back home and live a little just me and my kids and my honey
Mama said little Danny's not doing too good in school
Said he keeps talkin' about his daddy that he hardly knows
Teacher said that he just sits at his desk and draws the pictures of trucks
I guess I know what that means and what it shows
Why I'm not home three months out of the year
And here lately it's showing on me too
I saw a lot of country at first and I really like it then
But anymore there's just none of it new
Oh what a long old haul this has been
I've had rain most of the way and now it's beginning to pour
It sure looks cold that wind blowin' up through that canyon
But I gotta keep my spirits up so I guess I'll sing a little more
I'm going down to Feather River Canyon gotta go down Diner Some it is closed...
Roll truck roll me on home

I was pullin' up a hill that's known as the Devil's Crest
Haulin' 36 ton on a run called the Nitro Express
There was nothin' but curves a runnin' from the top on down
And at the bottom of the grade sat a quiet little country town
Well I was drivin' off the top when she jarred and the driveshaft broke
Started pumpin' up the brakes saw 'em going in a big cloud of smoke
To keep 'er upright I knew I had to do my best
Against a runaway bomb they call the Nitro Express
There was 36 ton of a detonated steel
Over 18 tires that smoked and squealed
I had to ride her down and I couldn't jump free
Or there'd be a big hole where that little town used to be
[ instrumental ]
Well that old trailer leaned each time that I took another curve
My hands started sweatin' and I knew I was losin' my nerve
And I was cussin' each rock and every inch of the Devil's Crest
A fightin' with the wheel of a rig called the Nitro Express
I side-swipped a mountain so I'd slow her down by rubbin' her side
And when the sparks started flyin' man it looked like the 4th of July
I finally got her stopped but mister I'm a gonna confess
That's the last run I'm makin' in a rig called the Nitro Express
There was 36 ton of a detonated steel...
There was 36 ton of a detonated steel...

It was his first trip to Boston in a big long diesel truck
It was his first trip to Boston he was a havin' lots of luck
He was headed the wrong direction down the one way street in town
And this is what he said when the police chased him down
Give me forty acres and I'll turn this rig round
It's the easiest way that I found
Some guys can turn on a dime or turn it right downtown
But I need forty acres to turn this rig around
When he finally found where to outload he had the dreadful shot
His trailer pointed toward the road and his cab right to the dock
And as he looked around him through his tears he made the sound
Oh give me forty acres and I'll turn this rig round
Give me forty acres and I'll turn this rig round...
[ instrumental ]
When he finally got unloaded he was glad to leave that town
He was feelin' fairy happy goin' back to Alabam
And up ahead he saw a sign said you are northward bound
He said give me forty acres and I'll turn this rig round
He was drivin' down the right lane when ahead he saw a sign
Yet to make the left turn but he could not gettn' in line
The tears were streamin' down his cheeks and they all heard him yell
Give me forty sticks of dynamite and I'll blow his rig to hell
Give me forty acres and I'll turn this rig round...

Well there's not a girl around that can make me settle down
Cause I'm a happy go lucky truck driver
I'm happy and carefree yeah and that's just how I wanna be
I'm a happy go lucky truck driver
Well I work real hard and I save my mon just to havin' my fun each day
And that's just how I'm gonna stay
Well I'm just like a wild wild goose fancy free and I'm foot loose
I'm a happy go lucky truck driver
[ instrumental ]
Well I've never seen a pretty girl yet that I could not forget
I'm a happy go lucky truck driver
I'm a livin' the life for these I'm doin' just what I please
I'm a happy go lucky truck driver
Well I work real hard and I save my mon just to havin' my fun each day...
I'm a happy go lucky truck driver

I drove a big old truck from Mississippi all the way cross country to Frisco
I got another load then I was on my way again back to where that Mississippi flows
I like to hear that rhythm as that motor purrs along
And them big wheels a keep rollin' clear and free
I'd rather drive a truck than to be a millionaire it's the only life for me
Cause my grandpa drove a mule train and my pa a riverboat
And I just a like a them I'm gonna see lots of land
My grandpa drove a mule train and my pa a riverboat
I'm just like them I'm a motivatin' man
[ instrumental ]
I met a pretty girl while down in Dallas I thought that we would marry up
But I lost my nerve when we got to the church
And I climbed back aboard my old truck
For I got to thinkin' things over married life is not for me I'm sure
I don't want a woman to tell me that I can't drive my truck anymore
Cause my grandpa drove a mule train and my pa a riverboat...
I'm just like them I'm a motivatin' man

Feelin' tired and weary from my head down to my shoes
Feelin' tired and weary from my head down to my shoes
Got a lowdown feelin' truck driver's blues
Ride ride ride on in to town
There's a honky tonk gal waitin' for me
And I've got lots of troubles to drown
I never did have nothin' ain't got not much to lose
I never did have nothin' ain't got not much to lose
Except this lowdown feelin' truck driver's blues
[ instrumental ]
Ride ride ride on in to town...

Big Mack was a driver of a semi rig from Denver to the coast of Maine
And every truck driver and highway man well they all knew big Mack's name
He stepped into a diner by the scales where he stopped to weigh
Took one look at the waitress there and we all heard him say
Pour me a piece of coffee pass me a cup of bread
Why you're the sweetest things that I've ever seen and there's a ringing in my head
Make my eggs a medium rare over easy with my steak
I'm gonna buy you a farm in Texas gal if it takes every sin I make
[ instrumental ]
Well she stood there a starin' at Big Mack kind of in a state of shock
She told him when he set his orange juice down be careful now it's kinda hot
I've already buttered your coffee the toast is in your cup
Your French fried soup and scrambled prunes will soon be coming up
She took off her apron grabbed her coat down off the rack
Took Big Mack's arm and told the boss I'm a quittin' and I won't be back
She climbed up in that diesel cab both pipes were a spoutin' smoke
Someone said Big Mack just fell and this time it ain't no joke
Pour me a piece of coffee pass me a cup of bread...

Waitin' my baby's waitin' waitin' at the end of the line
Hurry up old truck we're running a way behind time
Longin' yes I'm longin' to hold her in my arms it's true
Cause old stirring wheel I'm gettin' mighty tired just holding on to you
Well these days drag by and the miles get longer as I travel on
But I can hardly wait cause I've got me a date with the angel that's waitin' in home
But it won't be long till I get there holding the one who's true
Cause old stirring wheel I'm gettin' mighty tired just holding on to you
[ instrumental ]
But it won't be long till I get there holding the one who's true
Cause old stirring wheel I'm gettin' mighty tired just holding on to you

Well I pulled outta Pittsburgh a rollin' down that Eastern Sea board
I got my diesel wound up and she's a runnin' like a never before
There's a speed zone ahead alright I can't dodge all the cops in sight
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
I got me ten forward gears and my George overdrive
I'm takin' little white pills and my eyes are open wide
I just passed a Jimmy in white I been a passin' everything in sight
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
Well it seems like a month since I kissed my baby goodbye
I could have a lotta women but I'm not that kind of a guy
I could find one to hold me tight but I could never make believe it's alright
Six days on the road and I'm a gonna make it home tonight
[ instrumental ]
Well the ICC is checkin' on down the line
I'm a little overweight and my log book's way behind
But nothin' bothers me tonight I could dodge all the scales alright
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
My rig's a little old but that don't mean she's slow
She's got a flame from her stack and that smoke's some blowin' like it's cold
My hometown's a comin' in sight if you think I'm a happy you're right
Six days on the road and I'm a gonna make it home tonight
Six days on the road and I'm a gonna make it home tonight
Six days on the road and I'm a gonna make it home tonight

Well I loaded my truck in old LA and everything was a goin' fine
I was on my way to Bakersfield a headin' down that old grey flyin'
I was drivin' along feelin' mighty good oh I didn't have to care
Till I reached for the breaks and I found out I didn't have anywhere
Runaway I'm a goin' down down down runaway dangerous curves all around
If I'll get out of this truck alive well there's one thing for sure
I ain't a gonna drive this big ole truck no more
[ instrumental ]
Well I started pickin' up speed as each white line I passed by
And I knew if I did ride alive I'll bet I would have surely die
My head started pumpin' my heart started beatin' I didn't know what to do
And that's when I heard myself a sayin' a prayer or two
Runaway I'm a goin' down down down runaway dangerous curves all around...
Well I finally reached the bottom boy was I shook up
I opened the door and I crawled out and walk away from that truck
I caught a ride to the nearest town where I called my boss on the phone
I said if you want that big iron mash she's just sittin' out there alone
Runaway I'm a goin' down down down runaway dangerous curves all around...
I ain't a gonna drive them big ole trucks no more
