I was sittin' in a coffee shop havin' a cup and passin' time
Swappin' rodeo stories with this ol' cowboy friend of mine
When some motorcycle rider started snickerin' in the back
And started pokin' fun at my friend's hat
One ol' boy said hey Tex where'd you parked your horse
My friend just pulled his hat down low but they couldn't be ignored
One husky dude said maybe I'll just rip that hat right off your head
And that's when my friend turned around and said
You'll ride a black tornado across the western skies
You'll rope an ol' blue norther and milk it till it's dry
Bulldog the Mississippi and pin its ears down flat
Long before you'll take this cowboy's hat
He said pardner this ol' hat is better left alone
It used to be my daddy's hat but last year he passed on
My nephew skinned the rattler that makes up the hat band
But in sixty nine he died in Vietnam
I got this eagle feather from an Indian friend of mine
Somebody ran him down close to the Arizona line
And a real special lady gave me this hat pin
And I don't know if I'll see her again
You'll ride a black tornado across the western skies...
Now if your leather jacket means to you what this ol' hat means to me
Then we understand each other and we'll just let it be
But if you still think it's funny then my back's against the wall
But you touch my hat and you'll have to fight us all
Well I caught a little sadness in that gangleader's eyes
Then he turned back to the others and they walked on outside
And when my friend turned back towards me
I noticed that his brim was turned like a big ol' Texas grin
You'll ride a black tornado across the western skies...
Long before you'll take this cowboy's hat

I don't know if you remember me but I do you
We met a month or so ago here having a drink or two
You said I'm right back where I started from living alone again
And I left you here to cry your tears couldn't be your all night friend
Oh but that was then and this is now
That was when I had to live up to vows
The love that made me walk away that night
She up and let me down
That was then and this is now
[ instrumental ]
That slow dance that I passed on I'll take it tonight
And I'll take those lonely loving arms that wanted to hold me tight
Cause I'm right back where I started from living alone again
That night this man didn't understand what it means to need a friend
Oh but that was then and this is now...
The love that made me walk away that night
She up and let me down
That was then and this is now
That was then oh but this is now

You said goodbye to me this morning
With only these words to explain
You say you found someone you love better
But I still hear your voice call my name
I thought I heard you calling my name
Funny I still feel this way
Your voice seemed so close but I knew
That by now you were many miles away
[ instrumental ]
I walk through the streets of the city
People passing by think it's so strange
I'm talking but there's no one beside me
I thought I heard you calling my name
I thought I heard you calling my name...

I've always been my own worst enemy
That ol' bourbon cost me a wife and a lot of friends
Now nobody would even know me
Without a drink in my hand
I'm the fool who always drinks down past the label
On the closest bottle on the table
Somewhere between me and the mirror on the wall
I see a man gettin' ready to fall
I'm living in the shadows of those days gone by
Holdin' on to all those memories of you and I
Like my last case of whiskey all my dreams have disappeared
If only it was yesterday and you were still here
I know there's no way I could change
I've been too long being insane
All my horizons have faded so far there out of sight
It's too late for me to see the light
I'm living in the shadows of those days gone by...

He just turned twenty-one this was his first job
He had a cold steel revolver a liquor store to rob
He said gimme your money Mister please don't hesitate
If you try to be a hero it'll be your last mistake
You got a lot of reasons to live and I'm just down to one
California beat me and almost took my mind
This pistol bought me distance but I'm a running out of time
My mama's up in heaven yes daddy's down in hell
Sister she's gone crazy brother's back in jail
My woman waits in Macon Lord I wanna hold her tight
And heaven hell or Macon I'm gonna see one of them tonight
[ instrumental ]
If I could see my mama she'd tell me what to do
I'm goin' against my raisin' I'm holdin' this gun on you
When a man is down he can't get up just one way to turn
I'm walkin' on the tight rope a hangin' by a thread
Bad times all around me worse times up ahead
My mama's up in heaven yes daddy's down in hell...

Light's down low music playin'
Soft and slow body's swingin'
I've waited for this moment all my life
We're so close to something special
Something good something right
We can't stop what we're starting tonight
We can't stop please don't stop
We're already falling to lay to run and hide
(We can't stop) hold on to me baby
(We don't stop) hold me tight
We can't stop what we've started tonight
Soon they'll turn out the lights
And we'll slip off into the night
And dance to our own music alright
Can't say no I don't want to
You can see that in my eyes
We can't stop what we've started tonight
We can't stop please don't stop...
We can't stop what we've started tonight
(We can't stop)

The old hometown looks the same
As I step down from the train
There to meet me is my mama and papa
And down the road I look and there runs Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home
Yes they've all come to meet me
Arms areached smiling sweetly
It's so good to touch the green green grass of home
The old house is still standing
Though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's that old oak tree that I used to play on
And down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home
Then I awake and look around me
At these four grey walls that surround me
And I realize that I was only dreaming
But there's a guard and there's that sad old padre
Arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak
And again I'll touch the green green grass of home
Yes they'll all come to see me
In the shade of that old oak tree
As they lay me neath the green green grass of home

In the carport two cars his and hers
On the towel rack two towels his and hers
In the bedroom the bed with two pillows still wet
With the teardrops they shed his and hers
The kids ride their bikes his and hers
Say their prayers every night his and hers
And it's plain from the start when the day comes real hard
It will break two little hearts his and hers
In the courtroom two sides his and hers
It's a question of pride his and hers
What a pity we say to see marriage today
They'll go their separate ways his and hers
They'll go their separate ways his and hers

So break out the bottle bring on the crowd
Yes gather round me cause misery loves company
I've just left my home friends where I couldn't sleep
For missin' a woman that I couldn't keep
She just walked out and left me for somebody else
Now her memory keeps hauntin' me when I'm by myself
So break out the bottle bring on the crowd
Tell funny stories turn the jukebox up loud
Come on sit at my table where the drinks are on me
Yes gather round me cause misery loves company
Now I'm not the first one who's lost everything
To a false hearted woman with a false hearted dream
But this is the first time I've suffered myself
Help me get over this love I'm handle to next love all by myself
So break out the bottle bring on the crowd...

I wish with every drink I take that somehow it could pay
For a one short night of passion and the love I threw away
And if this bar could heal the scars of how lonely it can be
At the bottom of the fifth again the only one out is me
At the bottom of the fifth again and another night alone
At least it helps me ease the pain and now like her I'm gone
Another night has passed me by and you call this being free
At the bottom of the fifth again and the only one out is me
[ instrumental ]
As the band plays down their closing song and the couples fill the floor
I reach out for the bottle and fill my glass once more
Well here I am at closing time for I did not wanna be
At the bottom of the fifth again the only one out is me
At the bottom of the fifth again the only one out is me
