Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham
Can you tell me where he's gone
He freed a lot of people but the good they say die young
And I just looked around and he was gone
Has anybody here seen my old friend John
Can you tell me where he's gone
He freed a lot of people but the good they say die young
And I just looked around and he was gone
Has anybody here seen my old friend Martin
Can you tell me where he's gone
He freed a lot of people but the good they say die young
And I just looked around and he was gone
Didn't you love the things they stood for
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me
So we'll be free
Someday soon it's gonna be a new day
Has anybody here seen my old friend Bobby
Can you tell me where he's gone
I thought I saw him walking up over the hill
With Abraham Martin and John

And he'll tell her he's working late again
But she knows too well there's something goin' on
She's been neglected and she needs a friend
So her trembling fingers dial the telephone
And Lord it hurts her doin' this again
He's the best friend that her husband ever knew
But when she's lonely he's more than just a friend
He's the one she longs to give her body to
Daytime friends and night time lovers hopin' no one else discovers
Where they go what they do in their secret hide away
Daytime friends and night time lovers they don't wanna hurt the other
So they love in the night time and shake hand in the light of day
And when it's over there's no peace of mind
Just a longing for the way things should have been
And she wonders why some men never find
That a woman needs a lover and a friend
Daytime friends and night time lovers hopin' no one else discovers...
Daytime friends and night time lovers hopin' no one else discovers...

I woke up this mornin' all cotton mouthed from drinkin'
Wonderin' how I'd make it through the day
Wild eyed and crazy all burnt out of thinkin'
Wonderin' how the hell I's gonna say
Goodbye Marie oh goodbye Marie
Out the window there's a lonesome highway calling me
It was fun Marie I gotta run Marie
If I cannot keep your love at least I'll have your memory
Goodbye Marie
Wakin' up beside you in the Tijuana mornin'
With that ocean breeze to keep us cool
Three weeks of lovin' twenty one nights of heaven
I stayed just long enough to be your fool
Is it goodbye Marie oh goodbye Marie...
Pour favor pour me one more tequila
I need all the courage I can find
This time tomorrow I'll be back in Houston
Thinking bout the girl I left behind
Oh goodbye Marie oh goodbye Marie...
Goodbye Marie oh goodbye Marie...

In Cumberland Kentucky on a cool hot evening
Billy lay in love with Marianne
She was a rich judge's daughter he was a son of a miner
But that night their love was more than they could stand
The judge said to his daughter that son of that coal miner
Is someone you'll go hell to leave alone
She knew his dad so well she knew she couldn't tell
But the truth was bound in show before too long
Their love had started growing on its own
You can't out run the long arm of the law
No you can't out run the long arm of the law
Billy placed his hand on Mary and he felt the baby's moving
Kissed her and said I'll see you when I can
The judge had made a promise when he caught up with Billy
He'd sent him far away from Marianne
The whole town knew he'd do it too many times he'd proved it
To at least a hundred men behind the wall
He'd smiled behind that frown and when he brought that gavel down
He called himself the long arm of the law
And he'd set his mind on seeing Billy fall
In a hot humid mine shack a mid-white pulled the sheet back
And placed cool damp towel on Marianne
Billy's eyes were wide with wonder from the spell he was under
When she placed the new born baby in his hands
He didn't hear the siren just a baby's crying
That miracle of love was all he saw
When the door came crashing down and Billy turned around
He felt the heart and soul inside him fall
He stood face to face with the long arm of the law
You can't out run the long arm of the law
No, you can't out run the long arm of the law
You can hide out for a while he says with a smile
But you can't out run the long arm of the law
Seemed like everybody down in Cumberland Kentucky
Came out that day to see poor Billy's trial
The court was called to order there sat the judge's daughter
She looked so proud holding Billy's child
When they brought Billy to him the judge just look right through him
As he held that Holy Bible in his hand
And he smiled at his grandson then his eyes cut back to Billy
And said I think this time the law will understand
Son I sentence you to live with Marianne
You can't out run the long arm of the law
No you can't out run the long arm of the law
He said to Billy with a smile I know you hide out for a while
Ah but you can't out run the long arm of the law
No you can't out run the long arm of the law

The corn was dry the weeds were high when daddy took the drinkin'
Then him and Lucy Walker they took up and ran away
Mama cried a tear and then she promised fourteen children
I swear you'll never see a hungry day
When mama sacrificed her pride the neighbors started talkin'
But I was much too young to understand the things they said
The things that mattered most of all was mama's chicken dumplings
And the goodnight kiss before we went to bed
Oh the path was deep and wide from footsteps leading to our cabin
Above the door there burned a scarlet lamp
And late at night a hand would knock and there would stand a stranger
Yes I'm the son of Hickory Holler's tramp
When daddy left then destitution came upon our family
Not one neighbor volunteered to give a helping hand
So let them gossip all they want she loved us and she raised us
The proof is standin' here the full grown man
Last summer mama passed away and left the ones who loved her
Each and every one is more than grateful for their birth
Each Sunday she receives the fresh bouquet of fourteen roses
And the card that says the greatest mom on earth
Oh the path was deep and wide from footsteps leading to our cabin...
Oh the path was deep and wide from footsteps leading to our cabin...
Oh the path was deep and wide from footsteps leading to our cabin...

As I'm walkin' behind this plow I keep turnin' over mem'ries
Buried treasure of a past once filled with you
This old ground I know it's mine and I've worked it so many times
And the rain it's been prayin' for is fallin' from my eyes
Waitin' for the settin' sun when a hard day's work is done
We'd sit down and rock the baby and plan our dreams
But you turned it all around with this other man you found
And you never thought I'd figure out your scheme
And there's buried treasure hidden in the ground
Precious mem'ries of a love that lived and died
You couldn't be the simple wife you had to lead the cheatin' life
And you led me down the road I hate to ride
Now the neighbors they all knew they had seen him leave with you
But what they didn't see was I followed close behind
And the next day's paper read that a man had been found dead
And the lady he'd been seen with that can't find
And there's buried treasure hidden in the ground...
As I'm walkin' behind this plow I keep turnin' over mem'ries
Buried treasure of a past once filled with you
This old ground I know it's mine and I've worked it so many times
And the rain it's been prayin' for is fallin' from my eyes

Desperado why don't you come to your senses
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh you're a hard one but you got your reasons
The things that are pleasin' you will hurt you somehow
Don't you draw the queen of diamonds boy she'll beat you if she's able
The queen of hearts is always your best bet
Now it seems to me some fine things have been laid upon your table
But you always want the things that you can't get
Desperado oh you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger they're drivin' you home
Freedom oh freedom that's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walkin' through this world all alone
Don't your feet get cold in the winter time
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the nighttime from the day
Now you're losin' all your highs and lows ain't it funny how the feelin' goes away
Desperado why don't you come to your senses
Come down from your fences and open the gate
It's rainin' but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you let somebody love you
You better let somebody love you before it's too late
(Desperado)

The old hometown looks the same
As I step down from the train
And there to meet me is my mama and papa
And down the road I look and there runs Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home
Yes they'll all come to meet me
Arms a reaching smiling sweetly
It's so good to touch the green green grass of home
The old house is still standing
Though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's that old oak tree that I used to play on
Down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home
Yes they'll all come to meet me...
Then I awake and look around me
At the grey walls that surround me
And I realize that I was only dreaming
For there's a guard and there's that sad old padre
Arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak
Again I'll touch the green green grass of home
Yes they'll all come to see me
In the shade of that old oak tree
As they lay me neath the green green grass of home

His daddy was an honest man a red dirt Georgia farmer
His mama lived her short life havin' kids and bailin' hay
He had fifteen years and an ache inside to wander
Hopped a freight in Waycross wound up in LA
Lord the cold nights had no pity on a Waycross Georgia farm boy
Most days he went hungry then the summer came
Met a girl known on the Strip as San Francisco's Mabel Joy
Destitution's child born of an LA street called Shame
Growin' up came quietly in the arms of Mabel Joy
Laughter found their mornings brought meaning to his life
Yes the night before she left sleep came and left that Waycross country boy
With dreams of Georgia cotton and a California wife
Sunday morning found him standing neath the red light at her door
When a right cross sent him reeling put him face down on the floor
In place of Mabel Joy he found a merchant mad marine
Who groaned your Georgia neck is red but Sonny you're still green
He turned twenty one in a grey rock Federal Prison
The old judge had no mercy for a Waycross Georgia boy
Starin' at those four grey walls in silnce he would listen
That midnight freight he would take him back to Mabel Joy
Sunday morning found him lyin' neath the red light at her door
With a bullet in his side he cried have you seen Mabel Joy
Stunned and shaken someone said she's not here no more
She left this house four years today they say she's looking for
Some Georgia farm boy

Take your gown out of the closet put it on that's why I bought it
Come stand in front of me and let me see
Take the warm smile that you're wearin' place it on these lips that's burnin'
To share this fire you've built inside of me
Turn the light down in the bedroom pull the sheet down from the pillow
When we're like this love's easy understood
Let's walk through this house we live in to the room we always love in
And let's love each other while the feeling's good
With all my will I promise with all of me I love you
This feeling that I've got just grows and grows
I can't stop this wanting you I can't stop my needing you
No more than I can stop the wind that blows
But I'll hold your sweet lovin' long as we both have this feelin'
I'll love you every way I know that's good
Let's walk through this room we live in to the room we always love in
And let's love each other while the feeling's good
While the feeling's good let's keep it going
While the loving's good let's keep it growing
Let's walk through this room we live in to the room we always love in
Let's get some lovin' while the feeling's good
