Ain't we havin' a good time
I thank you everbody
And I love all of you and for all of you that aren't familar with me
Before I get strung out here
I want all of you to know that I'm not a very good M
(C) you shut your mouth back there
I'm not a very good M C
I stutter just a little bit well a little bit a whole lot
But you know I have worked for 15 years
And I'm finally beginnin' to make a livin' out of it
I went out to Hollywood and got on the Glen Campbell Good Time Hour
And as I say I worked for 15 years to become a sort of a sex image in this business
And Glen Campbell he makes a comedian out of me in one week
But I'm enjoyin' it and I'm havin' an awfully good time at it
And eh I'm just thankful for eh the opportunity of being on a national television show
You know I got a new song that I'm gonna attempt tonight
It was written by my piano player over here and as I mentioned it's a new song
And I don't know if I know it too good but I'm gonna attempt it anyway
It's called Your Memory Sure Does Get Around
It goes like this
I've been down in the valley and on the highest hill
But my heart knows I miss you and I always will
I've searched for happiness but all that I found
Is that your memory sure gets around
Your memory sure gets around
My heart can't seem to lay this feeling down
And I can't break these chains that still have me bound
Cause your memory sure gets around
[ instrumental ]
I've got many miles before me and many miles behind
But no matter where I run to I can't get you off my mind
I seem to hear your voice in every little sound
Cause your memory sure gets around
Your memory sure gets around...
Cause your memory sure gets around

Oh your memory sure gets around darlin'
You know I used to be in the Air Force and I was up in Omaha one time
And I was in this honky tonk and I met this little girl
I thought she was the prettiest thing I ever laid my eyes on
And I kinda fell in love with her
I'd like I'd like to eh tell all of you of the finished product of that experience
It goes like this
I was lonely I guess the night that we met
In a tavern down on old Broadway
And there were tears in her eyes and she whispered a sigh
Stranger please take me out of here
But it was only commercial affection
Cause a fool and his money will part
Yes it was only commercial affection
But she walked away with my heart
[ instrumental ]
I stood in disbelief as she hurried off to meet
Another fool down on old Broadway
Now many nights have come and gone still the echo lingers on
Stranger please take me out of here
But it was only commercial affection...

Oh I love everone of you
Thank you folks you're mighty kind
You know I'd like to do a number here
That I had the pleasure the financial pleasure of writing
It's actually a true story sold about 3 1/2 or 4 million records
And it was recorded the big hit on it was a boy from Houston here
And his name was Mr Kenny Rogers
And this about a girl from England and a boy from Pahokee Florida
It's it is a true story
I wadn't involved in it I don't want anybody to get any kind of ideas
But it is a true story
It goes like this
You've painted up your lips and rolled and curled your tinted hair
Oh Ruby are you contemplating going out somewhere
The shadow on the wall tells me the sun is going down
Oh Ruby don't take your love to town
It wasn't me that started that old crazy Asian war
But I was proud to go and do my patriotic chore
And yes it's true I'm not the man that I used to be
Oh Ruby I still need some company
Well it's hard to love a man whose legs are bent and paralized
And the wants and the needs of a woman your age Ruby I realize
But it won't be long I've heard them say until I'm not around
Oh Ruby don't take your love to town
Well she's leaving now cause I just heard the slamming of the door
Now the way I know I've heard it slam one hundred times before
If I could move I get my gun and put her in the ground
Oh Ruby don't take your love to town
One two three four
[ instrumental ]
For God's sakes turn around

I love to come to Houston because everytime I come here
I either get put in jail or something
And it's always put up by two very good friends of mine
Mr Arch Yancy and Bill Bailey
They always pull some kind of trick on me
How bout givin' them a big hand from radio station KIKK Arch Yancy and Bill Bailey
I was up here eh one time just a singin' and up come a cop and grabbed me and pulls me off the stage
Puts me into the eh the squadcar and takes me up the highway
And then they made me an honorary prisoner
Had me scared to death there for awhile I was so scared I was stutterin'
You know what folks are always askin' me
They say well Mel does it eh does people ever bug you in the audience when you're up on the stage
A talkin' and all that stuff and actually they don't most people are just wonderful
Ever now and then tho I'll get one out there I'll be up here
And it takes me half an hour to say somethin'
And somebody out there'll say huh
Folks ask me they say well Mel do you think you'll ever make it
And I said well hold it there just a minute
I said Jimmy Durante made it with his big nose
And old Eddy Cantor he made it with his big eyes
And Don Rickles he made it with his big mouth
Mae West made it (laughter)
Okay now I know what kind of audience I'm workin' to
You know what folks are always askin' me they say well Mel
What was folks is always askin' me
They say why Mel we know that you do a lot of writing for other artist
What was the first song that you ever wrote and you had recorded
Well as I mentioned earlier I was in the Air Force
And I got out of the Air Force about 1955 and I went home to Florida
I couldn't find me any kind of work so I did a whole bunch of little odd jobs
I picked strawberries and I's a milkman for about 3 days
My wife made me quit that job
So I picked some more strawberries
I worked on the railroad I was a fireman
One of my duties on there as a fireman was I's supposed to keep the engineer alert
At all times I's supposed to call out the signals that's up ahead of us
If it's red I holler out red and if he ain't asleep he answers me
He says (red) if it's I holler out yellow and he answers me (yellow)
Green (green) but you know those lights were always 4 or 5 miles behind us
Before I could ever get it out
So I picked some more strawberries
One day I's out there I's just a gettin' it
I'd been out there about four hours and made about 85 cents
I was disgusted with my life everthing and I had this idea for a song
I sat down in the middle of that strawberry patch
And I don't know where the thought came from but I got a pretty good idea
And it was recorded by Mr Webb Pierce
And it became a number one hit
And I got out of that strawberry patch in a hurry folks
It goes like this
Oh Lord I'm tired tired of living this a way
Standing on the corner of a busy street
Looking for your face in every crowd I see
Checking every honky tonk in this town
Tryin' to find the places that you hang around
Oh Lord I'm tired tired of living this a way
I've been waitin' on you baby night and day
Wonderin' if your love will ever come my way
Time's runnin' out and I'm a slowin' down
Tired of being just another hang around
Oh Lord I'm tired tired of living this a way

Webb Pierce he asked me
He said do you have any more songs Mel that you can give me half of
Said I'll record it for you
And I said I did but I didn't lied about it
But I ran home and I got lucky and I wrote another song
Webb recorded it and it sold about half a million
It here it is folks
Well I ain't never I ain't never
Seen nobody like you
No no no never
Have I ever seen nobody like you
Lawd you call me up and say to meet me at nine
I have to hurry hurry but I'm there on time
I walk a right up and knock on your door
The landlord says he ain't a here no more
I ain't never oh darling seen nobody like you
Hoo hoo but I love you yeah I love you
I love you just the same
I love you just the same
I love you just the same

Thank you thank you folks
Ya'll make and ole ex-strawberry picker feel awfully good
You know what I'd like to do a number now that I had out recently
And it went number one for us and it should have because it's a number one song
And it's a story about a housewife and there's an awfully lot of 'em in this old world
And I'm gonna do this especially for all the little housewives in the house tonight
It's called Heaven Everyday
If an angel wears a housewife's dress
And fills a home with happiness
One wakes me gently every morning
And serves me coffee with a kiss
My life is heaven everyday
Because of all the love you give
Your smile drives all my cares away
And makes life heaven everyday
[ instrumental ]
If heaven is all they say
I know for certain I've found mine
Your tender touch and understanding
Makes my life heaven all the time
My life is heaven everyday...
And makes life heaven everyday

You know what folks are always askin' me
They say why Mel how do you do it
And I say do what
And they say well Mel how do you write a song
Usually I tell 'em by experience now it doesn't have to be your own experience
It can be someone else's happiness or their tragedy
But if I may tonight I'd like to tell all of ya'll about an experience
That I had one mornin' about 3 AM
My wife Doris woke me up and she hit the ole stutterin' boy
And she knocked me all the way out in the middle of the floor
And she said Melvin (Melvin ha ha ha)
Listen wormy it ain't as bad as Claude sound like a hammer
And I said what is it
And she said Melvin who's Julie
Well you talk about stutterin'
Oh was I I got on with it
It took me about fifteen minutes to tell that it was a race horse up in Kentucky
A few days after that tho I went home I said honey have I had any messages today
And she said yes she said your race horse called to day Melvin
Now that's an experience
And I'd like to do this especially for my policeman friend over there Bert
I'm gonna do this for him
And I hope that you folks out there in the audience tonight I hope that you folks
Don't ever have to go through anything like what I went through
But if you do you might come up with a few little words
That goes something like this
Cross the table over coffee just this morning
Woman caught me by surprise without a warning
She said honey you talked in your sleep then she began to weep
And she said tell me now and tell me truly who's Julie
With a blank look on my face I searched my mind
For an answer or excuse of some kind
But the words wouldn't come and my mind went blank slowly my head just sank
And she said honey you know I love you truly but who's Julie
Oh Julie what's this hold you've got on me
You're on my mind in my dreams you know you should not be there Julie
I'd like to say Julie's just a friend of mine
But I know that would not satisfy your mind
You see Julie gave me something you did not she remembered what you forgot
And honey I'm sorry I've got to tell you so cruely
You know I just can't stand up here
And tell all you nice Houston folks a big ole lie like that actually
That didn't happen to me actually
I've been happily married for about thirteen fourteen years now
Doris and I have eleven birddogs at home
We've got four beautiful little children that we're awfully proud of
And I don't you folks a leavin' here tonight thinkin' that ole Mel Tillis is that kinda guy
And now you know don't you ever ask me again
Who's Julie mhm mhm oh tell me now mhm

Thank you thank you thanks up there too everbody
You know what folks are always askin' me
They say well Mel out of all your songs that you wrote and everthing
What has been the biggest song that you've ever been connected with
And this song sold about a half a million I mean about five million records
I didn't record it cause it's got a talkin' part in it
And if I'd a recorded it I'd a probably still been in the studio and it's been five years
But I'm gonna do it tonight I feel like I can do it fellers
This is a story about an ole boy that was up in one of the northern cities
And he stuttered just a little bit and he was havin' a pretty hard time of it
It goes like this
I wanna go home I wanna go home
Oh Lord I wanna go home
Last night I went to sleep in Detroit City
And I dreamed about those cotton fields back home
I dreamed about my mother dear old papa sister and brother
And I dreamed about the girl that's been waiting much too long
I wanna go home I wanna go home
Oh Lord I wanna go home
Folks on behalf of all my boys up here in the band
I've had a wonderful evenin' here with all of you
And I feel so good by the way that all of you out there has accepted us
And I'd like to extend the invitation for all you folks to come down and visit with us
Some night at the Grand Ole Opry and if you can't do that
Tune us in every Sunday night on the Glen Campbell Good Time Hour
I'd love to visit with you by the way of the miracle tube the TV
You know I love to sing I guess
I've been a lovin' it ever since I found out I couldn't talk too good
And I think we outta have a whole lot more singin' and a lot less fightin'
What do y'all think about that
