Faron Young began recording in 1951, but Sweethearts or Strangers was his first album. Besides that distinction and the fabulous cover photo of Young in a brilliant turquoise western shirt, the album is standard fare. Sound-alike covers of Hank Williams' "I Can't Help It" and "Your Cheatin' Heart" join classic songs like Spade Cooley's "Shame on You" and Jimmie Davis' "You Are My Sunshine." Young's hard, Hank Williams-derived honky tonk sound is classic, but the menu of popular favorites is too predictable to be really interesting. None of the songs were hits for Young, but his country remake of the big '40s pop hit "You Call Everybody Darlin'" was a good idea.

(Jimmie Davis - Lou Wayne)
« © '56 Peer International, BMI »

Sweethearts or strangers
It makes no difference now I'll leave it up to you
Sweethearts or strangers
I'll get along somehow what do you want me to do

I guess I'll always love you no matter what you say
By all the stars above you we can't go on this way
Sweethearts or strangers
How can we go from here sweethearts are strangers dear
[ steel - fiddle ]
Sweethearts or strangers
What will the verdict be that's what you must decide
Sweethearts or strangers
Don't you worry about me and I've loved I left and I cried

I guess I'll always love you although you say we're through
I'm glad that I had known you though my heart breaks in two
Sweethearts or strangers
How do we go from here sweethearts are strangers dear

YOUR CHEATIN' HEART
(Hank Williams)
« © '52 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

Your cheatin' heart will make you weep
You'll cry and cry and try to sleep
But sleep won't come the whole night through
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you

When tears come down like falling rain
You'll toss around and call my name
You'll walk the floor the way I do
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you
[ steel - fiddle ]
Your cheatin' heart will pine someday
And crave the love you threw away
The time will come when you'll be blue
Your cheatin' heart will tell on you

When tears come down...

I CAN'T TELL MY HEART
(Marvin McCullough)
« © '54 Central Songs, BMI »

I can't tell my heart that you don't love me
I can't say the love we had was blind
It's true you left dear for another
But I can't tell my heart that you're that kind

Each night I hug my pillow I make believe it's you
But it can't take the place of a lovely girl like you
I can't tell my heart that you don't love me
So I'll just fool my heart the way that you fooled me
[ guitar - fiddle ]
I was blinded by your charm and glamor
I thought I'd found the love so true and real
Now I will pay the price in tears and sorrow
And there's no words to tell you how I feel

You just laughed and told me to find another love
But instead of this I pray I'll win your love
So I can't tell my heart that you don't love me
I'll just fool my heart the way that you fooled me

BETTER THINGS THAN THESE
(Red Hayes - Iris Franks)
« © '55 Fort Knox Music, BMI / Trio Music, BMI »

You thought you'd set the world on fire that life was just a song
You thought if you'd try hard enough things couldn't turn out wrong
How feeble is the string of those whose heartaches never ease
But there'll may be a chance for me for better things than these

So many battles fought and lost you've heard of constantly
For someone left to pay the cost and this time it's mean
But there's one thing I'm hopin' for someday the pain will leave
Tomorrow may rebuild to me much better things than these
[ fiddle ]
You've learned to love somebody new it seems that I can't bear
To see you in another's arms and know you're happy there
My heart is broken still I try a jealous heart to please
It's hard to smile but God may show me the better things than these

YOU CALL EVERYBODY DARLING
(Sam Martin - Ben Trace - Albert Trace - Clem Watts)
« © '46 Edwin H Morris & Co, ASCAP »

You call everybody darling and everybody calls you darling too
You don't mean what you're saying it's just a game you're playing
But you'll find out that I can play the game as well as you

If you call everybody darling
Then love won't come a knocking at your door
And as the years go by you'll sit and wonder why
Nobody calls you darling anymore
[ guitar - piano ]
You call everybody darling...
Nobody calls you darling anymore

(Mel Tillis - Buck Peddy - Faron Young)
« © '56 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »

I said hey I'm a poor poor boy
Well I got no car and my horse went lame I got no friends that I can name
But step up close and hear me hon I'm just a poor boy looking for fun

Well I've been around this whole wide world there's nothing I ain't done
I phoned with lots of pretty gals I've had a lotta fun
But they always mentioned diomond rings and wanna tie the knot
But you can't raise a wife on nothing and nothing is all I've got

I said hey I'm a poor poor boy...
[ fiddle - steel ]
Well my reputation ain't the best but my heart is never blue
I got no income tax to pay no worries boy like you
I've got no one to tie me down every day's my lucky day
If you wanna be happy just like me hear what I have to say

I said hey I'm a poor poor boy...

I CAN'T HELP IT (IF I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU)
(Hank Williams)
« © '51 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

Today I passed you on the street and my heart fell at your feet
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
Somebody else stood by your side and he looked so satisfied
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you

A picture from the past came slowly stealing
As I brushed your arm and walked so close to you
Then suddenly I got that old time feeling
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
[ steel - guitar ]
It's hard to know another's lips will kiss you
And hold you just the way I used to do
Oh heaven only knows how much I miss you
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you

WORRIED MIND
(Ted Daffan - Jimmie Davis)
« © '41 Peer International, BMI »

You promised me love that would never die
That promise you've made was only a lie
Now after you're gone all alone
And I for all that I've got is a worried mind
[ steel ]
And when I was down you've just let me there
I needed you so but you didn't care
You found the new love and home so fine
But all that I got is a worried mind
[ guitar ]
I gave you a ring I gave you a home
You promised me that you never would wrong
I bought you fine clothes and I bought you wine
But all that you gave was a worried mind

I'LL BE YOURS
(Jim Odom)
« © '56 ATV Songs, BMI »

When he stopped sending roses when your certains are just supposed
When the door to romance closes darling I'll be yours
When bluebirds hush their singing when your make believe bells stop ringing
When your sweet clinging vine stops clinging darling I'll be yours

I'll be yours although I know your heart is second hand
I'll be true for only you complete my future plans
I'll always hold you my heart although you never cared
How many lonely nights I'll spend just wishing you were here
When other hearts resist you when you're lonely for lips to kiss you
When you have no one to miss you darling I'll be yours
[ guitar ]
I'll be yours although I know...

THAT'S WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE LONESOME
(Dan Welch)
« © '53 ATV Songs, BMI »

Tears keep rolling down your cheek you your voice gets talk so you can't speak
Every day seems like a week and that's what it's like to be lonesome
You get too blue to stay at home but in a crowd you're still alone
You lose the will to carry on and that's what it's like to be lonesome

Everyone has a hope that's died everyone cries a tear inside
Everyone has a cross to bear but I've got no one in my share
Your mind is built with memories your heart cries out for sympathy
An empty blue eternity and that's what it's like to be lonesome
[ fiddle - steel ]
Everyone has a hope that's died...

YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE
(Jimmie Davis - Charles Mitchell)
« © '40 Peer International, BMI »

The other night dear as I laid sleeping
I dreamed I held you in my arms
When I awoke dear I was mistaken
And I hung my head and cry

You are my sunshine my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies're grey
You'll never know dear how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away
[ steel ]
You told me once dear you really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me and you love another
You have shatered all my dreams

You are my sunshine...
