CONVERSATION

I was talkin' to a farmer not long ago
His face was all brown and wrinkled and his hair was as white as snow
I'd gone for a drive out in the country when I stopped at his place
When I first stopped and spoke to him
He said don't I know you you look familiar to me
He sat there for a minute and said yeah I know you
I listen to you on the radio and watch you on TV
Then he started to tell me about his farm
And his voice got real soft with a gentle tone
He said this little ol' farm has sent five kids through school
And for 48 years it's been my home
The wife and I bought this place when we first got married
She was just 18 and I was 21
We raised all of our five children right here
Sent 'em through school and onto college our four girls and one son
I asked him what he thought about things today
All the prices and everything seem so high
He said well I sorta leave that to someone else
Cause I figure that nearly everything kinda even's out in the end I'll tell you why
You see I raise the corn fatten the hogs take 'em into town
Then I take the money that the hogs bring
And buy me some new seeds to plant in the ground
Then I raise the wheat that makes the flour to feed my wife and me
I raise the hay too feeds them cows out there to give us the milk we need
So I leave the price fixin' and things like that to someone else you see
Cause I got all that I can do just taking care of this place
And bein' an American farmer is what God wanted me to be
Then he said I enjoy talkin' to you Porter
But I'd better be back to work now I reckon you take care

FARMER
(Porter Wagoner)

He tills the soil and plants the seeds to feed his hungry land the farmer the farmer
With a hoe a shovel and a turnin' plow makin' his livin' by the sweat of the brow
The farmer the farmer
When the sun gets hot the fields are dry and like a brain the seeds then die
The farmer the farmer
Then he bends his back to plant new grain then his farm is blessed with rain
The farmer God bless the farmer
Then on his knees gives thanks to God for fertile fields of black rich sod
The farmer God bless the farmer
Raising his two calloused hands thanking God for letting him
Use his land to be a farmer
When the wind blows cold the ground is froze
Who feeds the hungry birds in the snow the farmer the farmer
No wonder he's the first in spring
To hear the lovely robins sing the farmer the farmer
His woman loves and understands
She works by his side in the fields like a man the farmers the farmers
Then on their knees give thanks to God for fertile fields of black rich sod
The farmers God bless the farmers
Raising up their calloused hands thanking God for letting them
Be farmers just plain farmers God bless the farmers the farmers
God bless the farmers the farmers

DADDY'S WORKING BOOTS
(Dolly Parton)
« © '73 Velvet Apple Music, BMI »
I have many fond mem'ries of my daddy
One of the things I remember most was dad's hard work and his workin' boots
My poor hard workin' daddy worked his life away for us
That's the way my daddy showed to us his love
And daddy's two hard workin' hands were calloused and were sore
Daddy's workin' boots have walked a million miles or more
As long as I remember I remember daddy workin'
Workin' on the job or either on the farm
Trying to provide for the family that he loved
Daddy's workin' boots have taken many steps for us
Daddy's workin' boots they served us his foundation
Just like him they're tired and worn for years they helped him stand
Daddy's workin' boots have filled their obligation
They walked that rocky road with a mighty mighty man
[ guitar ]
Dear Lord above I know up there my daddy's got a mansion
And a great reward that long was overdue
And since my daddy's gone away to be with you in heaven
I know he's walkin' your golden streets in a pair of brand new golden boots
Daddy's workin' boots...
My daddy's workin' boots

MY DAD
(Porter Wagoner)
« © '73 Porter Music, BMI »
My daddy was a hard working farm man with dirt on his hands most all his life
But inside my daddy's soul was as clean as white linen
And his heart was as pure as solid gold
Like most boys when I was growin' up I wanted to be just like my dad
Cause I felt that he had something that very few people had
My daddy was just a smiple man
He lived all his life on a little farm where I was born
He never had an education he didn't get to go to school
But he was the smartest man that I've ever known
I believe God must have been my daddy's teacher for he talked a lot with him
And when dad found somethin' that he didn't understand
He'd ask God about it just like you'd ask a friend
Honesty was a word that my dad lived by his word was his bond it meant the same
That's why he could borrow money from the bank just by signin' his name
The first thing I remember learnin' from dad was the meaning of honesty
He said if you're honest son
It means a whole lot more than you just won't lie or cheat
If you're honest you'll do unto others like you'd have them do unto you
And you'll always give more than just your share and anything that you do
Honesty stands like a giant oak tree with roots strong and deep in the sod
And if you're always honest with yourself son
It covers many of the commandments of God
Pride was another word that my dad lived by
He took pride in each thing and one that he told me why
He said always take pride in each thing you do boy no matter how small it may be
For God gave you the mind that you did in with
And take pride in each new thing that you see
And don't ever think that you're better than anyone
But always remember you're just as good as anybody son
And just because you're wearin' overalls with patches to cover each hole
Why it's not what's on the outside that makes a man boy
It's what's hidden deep in his soul
So always be honest and proud son in each thing that you do
And when you're in doubt about something ask God about it
Cause he's always honest with you

MOMENTS OF MEDITATION
(Porter Wagoner)
« © '73 Porter Music, BMI »
I see the sky and wonder why it's blue instead of red
I see a tree that's lost its leaves and wonder why it's dead
And the sun that keeps us warm and fills the day with light
Then I marvel at the stars that twinkle through the night
The mountain peaks that stand so high they seem to disappear into the sky
And across the snow capped mountain I see the blue horizon
With streaks of whiter that linger there behind the jets sublime
Such miracles my eyes behold all part of God's creation
There's so much beauty to be seen in moments of meditation
I speak to God while quiet and still the questions in my mind
Of things that I don't understand each myst'ry that I find
I find the answer quickly there for my soul's salvation
When I talk to God in moments of meditation
I ask God why someone like I should be so richtly blessed
While some who speaks his name so true and hungry and distressed
Then his voice is silent in my meditation with him
Which lets me know that some things must be known only to him
There's none so great as God the father the king of all kings
The writer of each holy word and creator of all things
He gave his son to offer life through Jesus Christ salvation
That every man might speak with him in moments of meditation

WAKE UP JACOB
(Porter Wagoner)
« © '72 Porter Music, BMI »
Far away on yonder hill old Blue's a barking at a coon I guess he's chased all night
And it's just about two hours before dawning and Jacob's cabin doesn't show a light
In the ruffle of the leaves beside my pathway a small animal appeared black and white
And as I run for life towards Jacob's cabin
The pole cat right behind me smelling up the country side
I holered wake up Jacob stir up a light did you ever see a man and a pole cat fight
Turn on the light and let me in wake up Jacob let me in
[ fiddle - el.banjo ]
Well the pole cat looked at me with his tail held high
As frantically I beat on Jacob's door
Then what a welcome sound to my nervous ears
As I heard Jacob's big feet hit the floor
As I waited there for Jacob to unlock the door
The pole cat's perfume filled the morning air
And the door was so strong that my eyes burned
And as the smell began to curl my hair
I holered wake up Jacob...
Wake up Jacob...
Wake up Jacob...

COUNTY FARM
(Porter Wagoner)
« © '73 Porter Music, BMI »
Working in the red hot sun paying for the wrong I done
Work's so hard here at the County farm
My calloused hands that hold the fork pitchin' hay until it's dark
Boy the work is hard here at the County farm
The County farm stretches the summer days so long
Makes me wish I'd never left my country home
Paying for the wrong I done I never meant to harm no one
Boy the work is hard here at the County farm
They told me that they'd show me how to cut his hay and use the plow
I've learnt a lot here at the County farm
I work the fields from sun till sun paying for the wrong I done
Boy the work is hard here at the County farm
The County farm stretches...
I hope my poor old mom and dad don't find out how their boy went bad
Workin' out my sentence on the County farm
My mama's kind and gentle heart and daddy too they tried so hard
To raise me for I'd never work on the County farm
The County farm stretches...
A workin' out my sentence on the County farm

SUN DON'T SHINE (ON THE SAME DOG EVERY DAY)
(Porter Wagoner)
« © '73 Porter Music, BMI »
Look at the sunshine the movin' black clouds listen to the thunder movin' away
Even the lightening has stopped it's flashin'
You know the sun don't shine on the same dog every day
And I'm due a little sunshine it's been a long long time
And the sun don't shine on the same dog every day
I've had my share of rain and loneliness and pain
But the sun don't shine on the same dog every day
Well I've been like a hermit livin' on the inside
I'm movin' to the sunshine I'll start livin' on the outside
I believe I'm right when I say that the sun don't shine on the same dog every day
And I'm due a little sunshine...
[ guitar ]
Get back loneliness and let me by I'm looking for a new love you know why
My love she left me gone far away but the sun don't shine on the same dog every day
And I'm due a little sunshine...
No the sun don't shine on the same dog every day
The dog of the sun one will move every time

(Porter Wagoner)
« © '73 Porter Music, BMI »
Now Bo-Bo is a slender boy lives on the outside of town
Bo-Bo he's a dancin' fool he can pick 'em up and lay 'em down
He can do the Bagalu or he can do the Dog
Or do the Funky Chicken or he can do the Frog
But when he gets hot and gets away down low
Then he does a dance he calls the Country Bo-Bo
It's kinda like the Penguin or the Robot the Electric Twist or the One Leg Hop
Country Bo-Bo he moves kinda slow
Until he does the dance he calls the Country Bo-Bo
[ guitar ]
Now Bo can feel the music or beat and the soul the country guitar sets him on fire
When he hears the fiddles Lord he seem to explode
A shakin' and a twistin' doin' the Country Bo-Bo
The push and the pull the Adrokstrup Country Bo-Bo he's shakin' it up
Dancin' the Crazy Legs the Breakdown Low
Quiverin' and a shakin' doin' the Country Bo-Bo
A slippin' and a slidin' a doin' the splits
Then he stands real stiff just kinda moves his hips
His favorite dance is the Country Bo-Bo the dancin'est man in the land little Bo-Bo
Now the wind's behind you son trash it
Look up keep it clean yeah laugh right on son right on
Get the kids and mama there's a wild man in the yard ooh

BONES
(Porter Wagoner)
« © '73 Porter Music, BMI »
Bones you've took me to places I wish that I'd never been
Bones you've carried me down winding roads of love that I thought had no end
But bones this time you've led me right straight to true love's door
So bones let me tell you don't take me away anymore bones
Bones I've felt you tremble and I've felt love make you bend
And bones you've been broken to pieces at times but you always seemed to mend
Bones we've been a long way together and not once have you let me down
Why bones you've probably walked me over
The place where we'll sleep in the ground bones bones bones
