Tammy Wynette's third album, D-I-V-O-R-C-E features the number one C&W hit by the same name in addition to a bevy of album tracks, including covers of "Gentle on My Mind," "The Legend of Bonnie and Clyde," and the Beatles' "Yesterday." Amazingly, Wynette's version of "Yesterday" actually succeeds, and it's far less cloying than might be expected. Other tracks include "Kiss Away," co-written by producer Billy Sherrill, and "Honey (I Miss You)," an answer to Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey." The vocal performances are excellent even on the more disposable material, and although nothing here approaches the level of the title track, the album is ultimately rewarding for those whose interest in Tammy Wynette extends beyond her greatest hits.

GENTLE ON MY MIND
(John Hartford)
« © '67 Ensign Music, BMI »
It's knowing you don't try to bind my freedom with some promise made of gold
That for you my door stays open and our love becomes a simple to A street
And it's knowing we're not shacked by forgotten words and bons
And the ink stains that have dried upon some line
That keeps you on the back roads by the rivers of my mem'ry
That keeps you ever gentle on my mind
It's not clinging to the rocks and I'd be planted on some column now that binds us
Or something that somebody said because they thought we fit together walking
It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing or forgiving
When I'm drifting through the market place and find
That you're moving on the back roads by the rivers of my mem'ry
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind
Though the wheet fields and the clothes lines
And the junk yards and the highways come between us
And some other woman crying to her mother cause she turned and you were gone
I still might walk for hours tears of joy might stain my face
And a summer sun might burn me till I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see you moving on the back roads
By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind
The shadows freek in the autumn winds that make me draw inside myself in silence
Cross legged now I sit and watch the endless chase of leaves across my yard
And laying down my hair brush I lean back within my window seat and find
That you're moving on the back roads by the rivers of my mem'ry
Ever smiling ever gentle on my mind

HONEY
(Bobby Russell)
« © '68 PolyGram Int, ASCAP »
See the tree how big it's grown but that it hasn't been too long it wasn't big
You laughed at me and I got mad the first day that I planted it was just a twig
Then the first snow came and I ran out to brush the snow away so it wouldn't die
Came runnin' in all excited slipped and almost hurt myself and you laughed till you cried
Yes you were always young at heart kinda dumb and kinda smart and I loved you so
You surprised me with a puppy kept me up all Christmas Eve two years ago
And you could sure embarrass me when you came home from working late
Cause you would know
That I'd been all alone and cryin' over some sad and lonely late late show
And honey I miss you too and I know you're being good
And I'd love to be with you if only I could
I wrecked the car and I was sad and so afraid that you'd be mad but what the heck
All afternoon you stormed around but I knew how to cool you down I hugged your neck
You came home unexpectedly and caught me crying needlessly in the middle of the day
And it was in the early spring when flowers bloom and robins sing I went away
And honey I miss you too and I know you're being good
And I'd love to be with you if only I could
One day when you were not at home while I was there and all alone the angels came
Guess you thought it strange of me to live the way I did that day it was a shame
But now your laughter just begun and even though you miss me hon you must go on
And when the snow fly passes overhead and cries down on my flower bed
You know you're not alone
See the tree how big it's grown but that it hasn't been too long it wasn't big
You laughed at me and I got mad the first day that I planted it was just a twig

LEGEND OF BONNIE AND CLYDE
(Merle Haggard)
« © '68 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Bonnie was a waitress in a small cafe
Clyde Barrow was a rounder that took her away
They both robbed and killed until both loved and died
So goes the legend of Bonnie and Clyde
The poem that she wrote of the life that they led
Told of the lawmen left dying or dead
Some say that Clyde made her life a shame
But the legend made Bonnie the head of the game
The rampage grew wilder with each passing day
The odds growing smaller with each getaway
With the end growing closer the harder they fought
With blood on their hands they were bound to get caught
They drove back from town on one bright summer day
When a man they be-friended stopped out in the way
With no thought of dying they pulled to the side
But death lay there waiting for Bonnie and Clyde
Two years of running was ended that day
For robbing and killing they both had to pay
But we'll always remember how they lived and died
So goes the legend of Bonnie and Clyde
(Bonnie and Clyde) Bonnie and Clyde

ALL NIGHT LONG
(Don Chapel)
« © '68 Al Gallico Music, BMI »
Move closer to me don't slip out of my arms
My emotions tonight are so strong
You say I'm your woman all through the day
Then leave me alone all night long
When I'm in your arms I'm too weak to be strong
Whatever we do can't be wrong
Don't tell me you love me all through the day
Then leave me alone all night long
[ piano ]
Move closer let me feel the touch of your lips
You've made me so weak for so long
Don't tell me you love me all through the day
Then leave me alone all night long
When I'm in your arms...

SWEET DREAMS
(Don Gibson)
« © '55 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
Sweet dreams of you every night I go through
Why can't I forget you and start my life anew
Instead of having sweet dreams about you
You you don't love me it's plain
I should know I'll never wear your name
I I should hate you the whole night through
Instead of having sweet dreams about you
Sweet dreams of you every night I go through
Why can't I stop loving you and find somebody new
Instead of having sweet dreams about you
Instead of having sweet dreams about you

YESTERDAY
(John Lennon - Paul McCartney)
« © '65 ATV Tunes, ASCAP »
Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh I believe in yesterday
Suddenly I'm not half the girl I used to be
There's a shadow hanging over me oh yesterday came suddenly
Why did he have to go I don't know he wouldn't say
I said something wrong now I long for yesterday
Yesterday love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away oh I believe in yesterday
I believe in yesterday

D-I-V-O-R-C-E
(Bobby Braddock - Curly Putman)
« © '68 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Our little boy is four years old and quite a little man
So we spell out the words we don't want him to understand
Like t-o-y or maybe s-u-r-p-r-i-s-e
But the words we're hiding from him now tear the heart right out of me
Our d-i-v-o-r-c-e becomes final today
Me and little J-o-e will be going away
I love you both and this will be pure h-e double L for me
Oh I wish that we could stop this d-i-v-o-r-c-e
Watch him smile he thinks it's Christmas or his fifth birthday
And he thinks c-u-s-t-o-d-y spells fun or play
I spell out all the hurtin' words and turn my head when I speak
Cause I can't spell away this hurt that's dripping down my cheek
Our d-i-v-o-r-c-e becomes final today...

Go on with your new love have a good good time
Take her out show her off fill her tall glass with wine
Live all you can I'll forgive you when the last thrill is gone
Just remember old faithful is waiting at home
Bright lights have you blinded for a long long time
Your rose colored world is a long way from mine
I'm just a teardrop from a breakdown and so all alone
Take your time when you wake up won't you please come on home
Come on home come on home never more will roam
I open wide my arms oh Lord all right so come on home
Come on home come on home come on home
It's all right so come on home

WHEN THERE'S A FIRE IN YOUR HEART
(Merle Kilgore - Spencer Williams)
« © '67 Al Gallico Music, BMI »
When there's a fire in your heart break the glass sound the alarm
Call on me I'll be there
Instant service speedy fast I was your first I'll be your last
No matter who you have in between
When there's a fire in your heart break the glass sound the alarm
When she's not all she seems
Instant service speedy fast I was your first I'll be your last
No matter who you have in between
There's been hearts spells in close spells ever since we met
I've seen your small fires your big fires but I won't give up yet
Oh someday you'll yearn cause your heart's gonna burn for that old familiar glow
You'll be burned out on smoke out and come back to me I know
Every thrill that you blaze makes me stay up closer behind
While you've been datin' I've been waitin' just hurtin' all the time
Your new flame was older and all will grow colder for mine was higher and higher
So I'm hanging on your sea cause you'll come running back to me
Cause I'm fightin' fire with with fire
When there's a fire in your heart...
When there's a fire in your heart...

(Billy Sherrill - Glenn Sutton)
« © '66 Al Gallico Music, BMI / Morris Music, BMI »
Kiss away kiss away guess that's all that's left to say
Please come back and kiss these tears away
Smile again let me smile again make this life worth live again
Please come back and kiss these tears away
Only you can change these sad and blue days
Only you can make them I-love-you days
Kiss away kiss away still there's nothing left to say
Please come back and kiss these tears away
Only you can change...

LONELY STREET
(Carl Belew - W.S. Stevenson - Kenny Sowder)
« © '56 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
I'm looking for that Lonely Street I've got a sad sad tale to tell
I need a place to go and weep where's this place called Lonely Street
A place where there's just loneliness where dim lights bring forgetfulness
Where broken dreams and mem'ries meet where's this place called Lonely Street
Perhaps upon that Lonely Street there's someone such as I
Who came to bury broken dreams and watch an old love die
Where I could find that Lonely Street where dim lights bring forgetfulness
Where broken dreams and mem'ries meet where's this place called Lonely Street
Where's this place called Lonely Street
