Under the direction of Don Was, Travis Tritt turns in one of his leanest and easily his grittiest country record yet with Restless Kind. Cutting back the country-rock flourishes that have always distinguished his sound, Tritt opts for twangy guitars, wailing fiddles, dobros, harmonicas, and unaffected guts vocals. Mirroring the stripped-down instrumentation, the song selection is straightahead honky tonk, rockabilly and traditional country. Tritt benefits immesurably from this approach — he has never sounded so alive. Actually, he has never sounded so purely country.

RESTLESS KIND
(Michael Henderson)
« © '91 Colgems Music, ASCAP »

Well I was born the restless kind settlin' down never crossed my mind
Wild and woolly well I guess that's me people sure get nervous when a woman's free
I can hold my tongue I can hold my wine I can hold my own I'm the restless kind

I've seen the country and I've been to town
Rode in country cars with the tops rolled down
Walked down the road where the rivers freeze whatever it takes I do what I please
I can hold my horses I can hold the line yeah I can hold my own I'm the restless kind
Yeah I'm the restless kind
[ fiddle - guitar ]
I was born the restless kind and I never assume what I'm gonna find
I can stand my ground I can slip through a crack
Just as sure as I leave honey I'll be back
I can hold my temper I can bide my time
Yeah I can hold my own I'm the restless kind
I can hold my temper I can bide my time
Yeah I can hold my own I'm the restless kind
Yeah I'm the restless kind

STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU
(Travis Tritt)
« © '96 Tree Publishing, BMI »

Tell me why do you love to make me cry
Is there a reason why you treat me so unkind
It seems you try to hurt me with everything you do
I guess you could call me crazy cause I'm still in love with you
Tell me why is your heart as cold as ice
Oh is there a demon hidden just behind your eyes
Well I dream someday you'll love me but that dream just don't come true
But that don't keep me from wishin' cause I'm still in love with you
There was a time I thought my love would set you free
But now you say all that's binding you is me how can that be
Tell me why do I go on believing your lies
And why everytime you hurt me I'm always so surprised
I know that I should give up find somebody new
But it's a hopeless situation cause I'm still in love with you
[ fiddle - guitar ]
Girl there was a time I thought my love would set you free
But now you say all that's binding you is me girl how can that be
Tell me why do I go on believing your lies...
Oh girl still in love with you cause I'm still in love with you

MORE THAN YOU'LL EVER KNOW
(Travis Tritt)
« © '96 Travis Tritt Publishing, BMI »

I know living with me ain't always easy
I dam up emotions some men just let flow
But girl when you're not by my side I feel a part of me has died
Cause I love you more than you'll ever know
More than life more than I've ever loved before
It's absurd and beyond words I couldn't want you more
When I try to pour my heart out to you I'm not sure it shows
That I love you more than you'll ever know
[ harmonica - dobro - guitar ]
I'm sure you've heard it said hearts have windows
But mine has doors painful past has closed
Unless someday they open wide revealing feelings locked inside
I'll love you more than you'll ever know
More than life...

Even when I pour my heart out to you I'm not sure it shows
That I love you more than you'll ever know
Yes I'll love you more than you'll ever know

DRAGGIN' MY HEART AROUND
(Paul Overstreet - Marty Stuart)
« © '94 Irving Music, BMI »

Well first you said that you loved me you swore that you'd be true
Never leave me lonesome but that's just what you do
You go out honky tonkin' all over town
With every step you take you just keep draggin' my heart around
I believe I'm slowly sinking feel I'm going down
It's bound to be the death of me if you're draggin' my heart around
[ guitar - fiddle ]
The stars out on the water that ol' moon up in the sky
They hang their heads in sorrow each time you pass me by
The way you hurt me darlin' I believe I'll come unwound
I can't go on much longer if you keep draggin' my heart around
I believe I'm slowly sinking...
I believe I'm slowly sinking...
If you keep draggin' my heart around
Round and round and round

HELPING ME GET OVER YOU
(Travis Tritt - Lari White)
« © '96 Travis Tritt Publishing, BMI »

[ with Lari White ]

You ask who's lying in my bed and is it really love we're making
Well my heart's hanging by a thread she's the only reason it ain't breaking
Do you ever cross my mind well darling fact is you still do
That's the reason she is here wiping your old memory clear
She's helping me get over you
Helping me get over you one kiss at a time
Cause all the pain that we've been through still weighs so heavy on my mind
Getting past the love we lost that's a lonely bridge to cross
So I did what I had to do I had to find somebody new who's helping me get over you
[ guitar + fiddle ]
I know you'd never ask his name in your heart I know you wonder
I'm not much good at playing games just tryin' to keep from going under
There's no forever in his eyes it's not the love that we once knew
Oh and it might be a sin but tonight I've got a friend helping me get over you
Helping me get over you...

Oh I did the best that I could do I had to find somebody new
To help me get over you

BACK UP AGAINST THE WALL
(Buddy Buie - James R. Cobb)
« © '72 ATV Songs, BMI »

I was dealin' up and down the highway till they caught me with a heavy load
They sentenced me to hard labor workin' on the side of the road
Now I don't deny I was guilty and I know I broke the law
I was hungry and broke and couldn't see no hope and my back was up against the wall
Now I'm right outside of your window honey open up and let me in
I broke out of jail this morning and I ain't never goin' back again
I just had to stop by for a minute and I can't stay long at all
Cause I gotta run you see I'm under the gun and my back is up against the wall
[ guitar - piano ]
I was shackled to a three-time loser a man named Jefferson
One night we got to talkin' and I asked him what he'd done
He said a man fell over my razor in the middle of a barroom brawl
But don't you see it was him or me and my back was up against the wall
Now I'm right outside of your window...
I gotta run you see I'm under the gun and my back is up against the wall
Yeah I gotta run you see I'm under the gun and my back is up against the wall

DOUBLE TROUBLE
(Paul Overstreet - Marty Stuart - Travis Tritt)
« © '96 Irving Music, BMI »

[ with Marty Stuart ]

Well I got a buddy at the factory I know him and he knows me
We were talking on the line today you wouldn't believe what he had to say
I told him all about you he said man that's strange she's my girl too
Well hello baby it's me again your country daddy your sweet boyfriend
Guess what I heard out on the street yeah they say you've been two-timing me
And if it's true running round you've got double trouble coming down
You've got double trouble can't you see
You can't be in love with him and play around with me
You've got one in the country and one man in the town
You've got double trouble coming down
[ guitar - steel ]
I'm sorry pal I didn't know well that's okay she's hit the road
I can't believe she'd be so cruel yeah she made us both look like a fool
She played her game until she found she had double trouble coming down
She had double trouble you and me
Got lots of lovin' left to do there's more fish in the sea
She had one man in the town she had double trouble coming down
She had double trouble can't you see
She couldn't be in love with you and play around with me
She had one man in the country and one man in the town
She had double trouble coming down
Yeah she tought that I'd be easy she tought I'd be her clown
She had double trouble coming down

DID YOU FALL FAR ENOUGH
(Troy Seals - Travis Tritt)
« © '96 Tree Publishing, BMI »

As I watch you while you're sleeping you don't know what I'm going through
Dealing with all my emotions and wondering if your love is true
You've given me no cause to doubt you and I know passion burns in your heart
But does that same fire keep on burning in the hours that we spend apart
If you knew the question that burns in my mind then you'd know why I worry so much
I can't help but wonder when we fell in love sweetheart did you fall far enough

There's something I feel when I touch you and that's when I really get scared
Cause I know there's men who would die for the feeling I'm feeling right here
Oh I'll be tormented forever unless I can give my fear up
I've got to stop acting so foolish I've tortured myself long enough
Oh if you knew the question...
[ fiddle - guitar ]
Girl if you knew the question...

SHE'S GOING HOME WITH ME
(Travis Tritt)
« © '96 Travis Tritt Publishing, BMI »

Well I guess you'd call me trouble I have been most my life
Been black and blue a time or two cause I ain't scared to fight
But I got myself a sweetheart that stands right by my side
Always around to cool me down when I get Dixie fried
And I know she loves to party she knows I don't like crowds
But I compromise on Friday nights and we go paint the town
She turns heads in every club we hang out in till three
I don't care how much they stare she's going home with me
She's going home with me tonight on that you can depend
She's not just some one night stand that girl is my best friend
And I don't have to be jealous just wait around and see
She don't want nobody else she's going home with me
[ guitar ]
Well I used to go out prowling skirt chasing every night
Sniffing round like some ol' hound like all you other guys
Until from out of nowhere she took me by the hand
I found what I'd been looking for dog days came to an end
So listen good now fellas no need to act the fool
I treat her well no way in hell that she'd leave me for you
Your come on lines won't sway her she's happy as can be
She made her choice forget it boys she's going home with me
She's going home with me tonight...
I don't have to get jealous just wait around and see
She made her choice forget it boys she's going home with me

SACK FULL OF STONES
(Travis Tritt - Marty Stuart)
« © '96 Marty Party Music, BMI »

I used to be the kind of guy I could laugh as well as cry
With a heart feather-soft and summer-warm
Since you've left me I've been faced with emptiness that's been replaced
With a heart that's hard and heavy as a sack full of stones
I never thought I'd ever see the man my mirror is showing me
Lord I must have aged ten years since you've been gone
The longest mile you'll ever crawl is the one after you fall
Dragging around a heart that's heavy as a sack full of stones
With the world upon my shoulders and my feelings on my sleeve
Every time I close my eyes at night all I do is watch you leave
But by far the biggest curse of being left alone
Is dragging around a heart that's heavy as a suck full of stones
[ guitar - steel ]
Well I tried turning to a bottle but the bottle turned on me
I've tried everything but nothing sets your mem'ry free
I'm serving life here in a prison that we once called a home
With a heart that's cold and heavy as a sack full of stones
With the world upon my shoulders...
Yes by far the biggest curse

WHERE CORN DON'T GROW
(Roger Murrah - Mark Allan)
« © '88 Murrah Music, BMI »

As we sat on the front porch of that ole gray house where I was born and raised
And stared out at the dusty fields where my daddy worked hard every day
I think it kinda hurt him when I said daddy there's a lot that I don't know
But don't you ever dream about a life where corn don't grow

He just sat there silent staring in his favorite coffee cup
I saw a storm of mixed emotion in his eyes when he looked up
He said son I know at your age seems like this old world is turning slow
And you think you'll find the answer to it all where corn don't grow

Hard times are real there's dusty fields no matter where you go
You may change your mind cause the weeds are high where corn don't grow
[ guitar ]
I remember feeling guilty when daddy turned and walked back in the house
I was only seventeen back then but thought like I knew more than I do now
I can't say he didn't warn me this city life's a hard row to hoe
Ain't it funny how a dream can turn around where corn don't grow
Hard times are real...
You may change your mind oh the weeds are high where corn don't grow
