On his eighth album of roughed-up country (kind of a cross between '70s Southern rock and sparkling, modern Nashville), Travis Tritt plugs in his amps and commands his group of industry vets to play loud. And in his single-minded quest to bring back the aural joys of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet (as well as a bit of pre-Hotel California Eagles, the peaceful, easy feelin' guys), Tritt proceeds to kick down the barn doors of any great commercial crossover and then stirs up a ball of dust that sounds conspicuously way out of time. The few times he plays the Nashville game (and Tritt's not as far removed from all the big-hat cowboys as he thinks he is) are actually the moments where No More Looking Over My Shoulder finds a comfort zone (the plaintive ballad "If I Lost You" is the best thing here). Someone should tell him that his redneck heroes weren't all that revolutionary, and that they certainly don't transcend all that well in the '90s.

NO MORE LOOKING OVER MY SHOULDER
(Craig Wiseman - Michael Peterson)
« © '98 Almo Music, ASCAP / Warner-Tamerlane Publishing, BMI »
As a child I was told that I was destined to be nothing
Growing wild as I got older I fulfilled what had been said
Hiding ignorance and fear I prayed nobody saw me bluffing
But I was laying the foundation for a future I would dread yeah
Seems like every choice I made would somehow leave me second-guessing
Bout the green grass I was passing racing toward the other side
I thank God for the blessin' that I finally learned this lesson
One step in the right direction's worth a wasted mile behind
Singin' no more looking over my shoulder no more hangin' on to the past
No more filling up my tomorrows with yesterday's sorrows
No more looking over my shoulder
I could chill a room with reasons why I would not give forgiveness
To the people who had selfishly left me a wounded soul
I kept dragging round those mem'ries like a ball and chain behind me
Wondering why my troubles followed me wherever I would go
Oh but one night sick and tired of being sick and tired
I realized forgiveness was the only open road
I swear I heard those shackles snap the moment that I took the path
I never have one time looked back since the morning I arose
I'm singin' no more looking over my shoulder...
[ steel ]
I'm singin' no more looking over my shoulder...
No more looking over my shoulder...

ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES
(James P. Pennington - Les Taylor - Larry Cordle)
« © '98 Zomba Songs, BMI »
I'm a little rough around the edges I didn't come out of no GQ magazine
I don't use a lot of big words but I'm bent on love if you know what I mean
I ain't intrested in bein' politically correct I stand right up and say what I believe
I'm a little rough around the edges but I think I'm exactly what you need
As you can see I ain't all spit and polish and every hair on my head ain't in it's place
I ain't got no big degree from college and I guess to tell the truth I need a shave
I'm a little rough around the edges....
[ guitar ]
Well you may think I'm just a KC plowboy just give me a chance to strut my stuff
I don't shine like some pin-up poster cowboy neither does a diamond when you dig it up
I'm a little rough around the edges...
I'm a little rough around the edges but I think I'm exactly what you need

IF I LOST YOU
(Stewart Harris - Travis Tritt)
« © '98 Travis Tritt Publishing, BMI »
There's been times I've felt like half a man life's had me down on my knees
Troubled times I don't understand why they happen to me
I have struggled through the darkness and I have found the light of day
But if I lost you there'd be no sunshine shining through
I don't know what in the world I would do if I lost you
Like a ship with no harbor like a bird with no wings
Like a fish out of water a dreamer without a dream
I have learned about losing I could lose most anything
But if I lost you...
Oh if I lost you...
If I lost you

GIRLS LIKE THAT
(Travis Tritt - Bruce Ray Brown)
« © '98 Brass Crab Publishing, BMI »
Five foot nine long legs clear up to there
High heel shoes short skirt with her shoulders bare
It's easy to see she's got her style down pat
Got a way of walkin' like a wild bobcat
Well you gotta love the Lord for making girls like that
She likes pickup trucks and longnecks and she loves to dance
She can steal your heart in a second with a single glance
Skin tight jeans and a cowboy hat hit a boy harder than a baseball bat
Well you gotta love the Lord for making girls like that
Well I wouldn't call myself a righteous man but I thank heaven every chance I can
For sending Eve to Adam when this old world first began
[ piano ]
Well I wouldn't call myself...
You can find them on a city street or down a country road
Natural born beauties turning heads everywhere they go
Take your breath away like a tire gone flat make a man cry like a little spoiled brat
Well you gotta love the Lord for making girls like that
Yes you gotta love the Lord for making girls like that
Well you gotta love the Lord for making girls like that

FOR YOU
(Travis Tritt - Bruce Ray Brown)
« © '98 Brass Crab Publishing, BMI »
You don't ask for much and I tremble at the touch of your sweet hand
When I look into your eyes I realize I'm such a lucky man
You've shown me love I never knew and there is nothing I won't do for you
I'd almost given up on the hope of having someone of my own
But you came into my life and you made this empty house into a home
I could never ask for more and every day I'm thankful for you
The first time that I held you girl I knew that it was real
And now I wake up every morning knowing what it's like to feel
So much love for you
As the years go passing by there'll be lows and highs that we'll go through
But I can close my eyes and rest cause come what may I'm blessed if I have you
As time paints silver in our hair just turn around I'll still be there for you
You've shown me love I never knew and there is nothing I won't do for you

I'M ALL THE MAN
(Travis Tritt)
« © '98 Travis Tritt Publishing, BMI »
Girl I know you see me as a man who's strong and never filled with doubt
But your love gives me courage you don't realize I can't be strong without
And though I try to hide it you see right through my vulnerabilities
So as long as you're beside me I'm all the man I'll ever need to be
I find myself daydreamin' longing hard to be your Superman
But then my dreams are realized when your kiss tells me I already am
Sweetheart I may not ever know exactly what it is you see in me
And why you think with all my faults I'm all the man I'll ever need to be
And in my darkest hour you can always see the dawn
Your trust in me has power like none I've ever known
Well I may get discouraged my worried mind gets tired and beaten down
Lord I won't be depressed for long cause you know how to get me off the ground
I really shouldn't question you've shown me all I'll ever need to see
I should just thank God in heaven I'm all the man I'll ever need to be
I should just thank God in heaven I'm all the man I'll ever need to be

TOUGHER THAN THE REST
(Bruce Springsteen)
« © '87 Bruce Springsteen Music, ASCAP »
Well it's saturday night you're all dressed up and blue
I've been watchin' you go out maybe you been watchin' me too
So somebody ran out left someone's heart in a mess
Well if you're lookin' for love honey I'm tougher than the rest
Some girls they want a handsome Dan or some good-looking Joe
On their arms some girls want a sweet talkin' Romeo
We'll round here baby I've learned you get what you can get
So if you're rough enough for love honey I'm tougher than the rest
Well the road is dark and it's a thin thin line
But I want you to know I'll walk it for you anytime
Maybe your other boyfriends couldn't pass the test
But if you're rough and ready for love honey I'm tougher than the rest
[ guitar ]
Well it ain't no secret I've been around a time or two
Well I don't know baby maybe you've been around too
But there's another dance all you got to do is say yes
If you're rough and ready for love honey I'm tougher than the rest
[ guitar ]

START THE CAR
(Jude Cole)
« © '92 Blackwood Music, BMI »
Well I'm tired of oppression so tired of the pace
Just wanna grab you baby and get out of this place
I got no chance of makin' it workin' downtown
Been walkin' slow and talkin' low and tired of goin' down and down and down
Yeah start the car we've gotta move this ain't no livin' this ain't no groove
It's been a long hard road come on baby drive it home start the car
Well started out for paradise ain't no promised land
This ain't no kind of livin' for an honest workin' man
There's people dyin' on the streets they never make the news
While others livin' up on the hill singin' the white boy blues
Oh girl start the car we've gotta move this ain't no livin' this ain't no groove
This city's rich we're dirt poor somewhere waitin' there's gotta be something more
Start the car oh yeah
Well we're goin' out with dignity goin' out with style
Gonna lay down that hammer baby make our on road cross the miles
Cause I can't take this town one more day baby
Yeah start the car we've gotta move...
Start the car we've gotta move...

MISSION OF LOVE
(Larry Cordle - Leslie W. Satcher)
« © '98 Lyric Spring Music, BMI »
I know you're wonderin' just what I'm doing round here on a mission of love
I never came down to this side of town but I'm here on a mission of love
Cause our little girl is crying your name and I've held her but she only wants you
And although I hate what you've become
Little tears brought me here on a mission of love
[ steel ]
I don't know this man hangin' all over you but I know what he's got on his mind
But if he's got a heart darlin' he'll let you go cause somebody else needs you tonight
Cause our little girl is crying...
And although I hate what you've become
Little tears brought me here on a mission of love

ROAD TO YOU
(Travis Tritt - Gary Baker - Frank J. Myers)
« © '98 Travis Tritt Publishing, BMI »
I spent years chasing after a restless wind calling out my name
I was wild-eyed and crazy with a spirit that could not be tamed
I had no direction Lord knows that I've been lost a time or two
But fate was there to guide me and lead me down the road to you
There've been other women but all they did was occupy my time
There was always something missin' that until you I thought I'd never find
Thought I knew what I was looking for but looking back I didn't have a clue
All the love that was waiting at the end of the road to you
It was worth the tears and the long and lonely years that I went through
I'd relive the pain for the happiness I've gained and all the love I've found in you
And when I hold you in my arms there's nothing in this world I'd rather do
I just close my eyes and thank the Lord he led me down the road to you
[ guitar - piano ]
It was worth the tears and the long and lonely years that I went through
I'd relive the pain for the happiness I've gained and all the love I've found in you
I spent years chasing after a restless wind callin' out my name
