lp discography - covers & lyrics

This guy Mel Tillis has written a bunch of recorded songs (well over 350) and this guy Tillis has sung a pile of Country songs on auditorium and arena stages and on rickety freight trains and in inter-state weary automobiles and even in recording studios. Mel didn't write all of the tunes in this album, even though he could have filled up a half dozen or more similar long play records with his own tunes...songs in the legitimate best-seller category like Emotions, Detroit City, I Ain't Never, etc. etc. etc. However, this thin, lanky-framed six footer from Tampa, Fla., wentout of his way to help the record's producers hand pick an even dozen Country Music gems that would fit likable Mel Tillis vocal talents like the well known glove. The search paid off. These twelve tunes are as Tillis as they could be even if they had come from his own pen. Naturally you'll note that this album includes such Tillis greats as Burning Memories. But even his own tunes were weighed in light of how they would fit into this album which they had decided would showcase Mel at his very finest. This great tunesmith need never be embarrassed about recording one of his own pieces... after all, some of the biggest stars in the business are beating his door down to get his songs for their albums. However, this is Mel's album. It's Mel's finest moment as a singer. Mel and everyone else involved in producing this classic album are more than pleased to see another fine Country Music talent share a few memorable moments of this fine work. The girl who harmonizes so beautifully and effectively on two numbers is a tall, stately Kentucky darling with long, flowing red hair and a magic, lyrical way with a Country Music song. Sue York is definitely a big plus factor here and her throaty harmonizing brings out even another side to the fine Tillis singing talent. Mel fires up the most penetrating performances of his singing career, Mental Revenge and his versatile style and feeling for a particular song makes I Love You Drops sound finer than in any of the many versions by the many other artists who have waxed it. To put it simply, Mel Tillis, one of Country Music's greatest songwriters, enters a realm all his own with this album... Mel's greatness here prompts us to place him on a special stage all his own where he reigns as one of Country Music's Untouchables!

GUIDE ME HOME MY GEORGIA MOON

(Joe Babcock) « © '66 Southern Skies Music, BMI »
Guide me home my Georgia moon

Well I left my home in Georgia for the lights of New York town
But my pockets soon were empty now my luck it sure is down
I'm a looking at that southern moon through the glow of neon lights
If that Georgia gal will have me then I'm on my way tonight

Guide me home my Georgia moon
To the one that I love so
Cause from her arms I won't be leavin' soon
Guide me home my Georgia moon
[ steel ] Well it's a long long way to Georgia just a few steps at a time
But I'm walkin' on down that highway towards the Mason and Dixon Line
My stomach sure is empty it ain't had a thing in days
But the Georgia moon keeps shining and I'll be there in a day

Guide me home my Georgia moon...
Guide me home my Georgia moon

STATESIDE

(Mel Tillis) « © '64 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »
Well the Japanese moon is bright tonight and Tokyo is full of life
Busy people everywhere but busy people just don't care
I wanna go stateside oh Lord I wanna go stateside

In and out the honky tonks but nothing's there I really want
Sat awhile then look around get up and leave and walk the town
I wanna go stateside oh Lord I wanna go stateside

The giasha girls don't understand the lonely life of a service man
When his heart is far away to a girl in the USA
I wanna go stateside oh Lord I wanna go stateside

I've heard say a man don't cry but I can't keep my blue eyes dry
I've been away about two years I know I've cried a million tears
I wanna go stateside oh Lord I wanna go stateside
Oh Lord I wanna go stateside

BURNING MEMORIES

(Mel Tillis - Wayne P. Walker) « © '63 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »
(Burning mem'ries burning mem'ries)
Tonight I'm burning old love letters
Photographs and memories of you
Hoping somehow I'll feel better
And when the smoke is gone I won't want you

Burning mem'ries burning mem'ries
Memories of you that I can't use
My heart to you no longer matters
And I can't live on memories
Into the fire goes dreams you've shattered
And when the smoke is gone then I'll be free

(Burning mem'ries burning mem'ries)

HOME IS WHERE THE HURT IS

(Marge Barton - Fred McRae) « © '65 Mimosa Publishing, BMI »
[ with Sue York ]
We're well known in every honky tonk in town
Not a night goes by that we don't make the rounds
People wonder why we choose to live this way
Why don't they ever stay at home I hear them say

But home is where our hurt is
Cause love doesn't live there anymore
Yes home is where our hurt is
That's why we don't stay at home much anymore
[ steel ] What was once our happy home has come to be
A place to fuss and fight and disagree
Our lonely house with wall to wall regret
And these bright lights somehow help us to forget

But home is where our hurt is...

WINE

(Mel Tillis) « © '64 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »
Wine pretty red wine pretty red wine
Pretty red wine pretty red wine

It cost me my family cost me my home
And gave me a dark dirty street to roam
Made me a drifter made me a bum
A looking for a hand out a looking for a turn

To get wine pretty red wine...
[ steel ] Wine pretty red wine...

It's cold in the country cold in the town
It's cold anywhere when you sleep on the ground
I lost all my courage lost all my pride
Where oh Lord can a wino hide

From wine pretty red wine...

I LOVE YOU DROPS

(Bill Anderson) « © '66 Johnny Bienstock Music, BMI »
They're not teardrops just sincere drops
They're I love you drops cause I love you

They were on my pillow when I woke up this mornin'
They were on the letter I tried all day to write
And just a little while ago I saw them fallin'
On your picture as I kissed it goodnight

I love you drops I miss you drops
Hurry home drops you've been gone so long drops
They're not teardrops just sincere drops
That say I'm lonesome and I love you

Never knew this heart could hurt the way it hurts for you
Never lived so many lifetimes in a week
Why don't you come back to me the way you said you would
And kiss these salty little crystals off my cheek

I love you drops I miss you drops...

MENTAL REVENGE

(Mel Tillis) « © '66 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »
I hope the friend you've thrown yourself with gets drunk and loses his job
And that the road you're walkin' on gets cold rocky and hard
I couldn't make you love me you only made me blue
So all in all should the curtain fall I hope it falls on you
I hope it falls on you

Then I will get sweet sweet sweet mental revenge
I will get sweet sweet sweet mental revenge

I hope the train from Caribou Maine runs over your sweet love affair
You walk the floor from door to door and pull out your peroxide hair
You never was my woman cause you were never true
So all in all should the curtain fall I hope it falls on you
I hope it falls on you

Then I will get sweet...

COME ON AND SING

(Mel Tillis) « © '66 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »
Come on and sing girls sing boys sing a happy song
Come on and sing girls sing boys this old world may not last long

Most ev'rybody's doing too much fighting and there's not enough singing going on
How many people have you ever seen fight while they were singing a song

Come on and sing girls sing boys sing a happy song...

Most ev'rybody's mistreating one another just for their personal gain
But that wouldn't happen to the sisters and the brothers
When they hold back their heads and sing

Come on and sing girls sing boys sing a happy song...
[ guitar ] Most ev'rybody's doing too much talking talking it and just get mad
So if all that talking's gonna make you unhappy why don't just sing and be glad

Come on and sing girls sing boys sing a happy song...

TORMENTED HEART

(Mel Tillis) « © '66 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »
There's no wings on you girl you're lost in this world
And I've got a tormented heart
You never could be true and still I worshipped you
And I've got a tormented heart

I know I must have loved you since you were a baby
And all you've ever done for me was drive me half crazy
And it would surely be a sin to love this much again
Cause I've got a tormented heart
[ strings ] I know I must have loved you...

BURIED ALIVE

(Billy Swan) « © '66 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
When she left I locked the doors and pulled the shades
Now I'm living in a six room grave
All my reasons for living have died
So I'm living buried alive

I just exist with nothing but sorrow
I don't know if it's today or tomorrow
I'm through living with the world outside
So I'm living buried alive

I just can't believe she's gone I've been too weak to cry
Now I sit and wait for teardops to fill my lonely eyes

My headstone is just the mailbox on the street
And the flowers she planted makes it complete
Now this home is like a grave inside
So I'm living buried alive
[ steel ] Yes I'm living buried alive

ABOVE SUSPICION

(Mel Tillis - Buck Peddy) « © '66 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »
[ with Sue York ]
We're above suspicion both you and I
They say that I'm a good girl and that I'm a good guy
We belong to others but the power of love
Is just too strong for right or wrong
Even when you're above suspicion
Above suspicion but that's what happens
When you're tied to those who never care
[ ac.guitar ] We're above suspicion someday they'll know
I couldn't be a good girl I couldn't be a good Joe
When two hearts beat togehter then the power of love
Is just too strong for right or wrong...

MR. DROPOUT

(Mel Tillis) « © '66 Cedarwood Publishing, BMI »
Well I dropout outta school when I was young
I thought living was just all fun
Then I met trouble on every turn
Now I'm one step away from being a bum

Lord I tried everything within my power
But I can't make but just a dollar an hour
You can't make a living on that kind of pay
And it hurts my pride to hear folks say

Hey Mr Dropout what's that you say
Sorry Mr Dropout we can't use you today

Well I got married bout one year ago
A winter's coming on and the work'll get slow
Mary had the baby and it's got blue eyes
When baby gets hungry baby cries

Lord I tried everything within my power
But I can't make but just a dollar an hour
You can't feed a family with that kind of pay
And it hurts my pride to hear folks say

Hey Mr Dropout what's that you say
Sorry Mr Dropout we can't use you today
