Producing herself for the first time (along with Steve Fishell), Tillis found the magic blend of Nashville Sound, California country-rock and post-Beatles pop. She released the heady "Spilled Perfume" as her first single, but the riches of Sweethearts Dance go much deeper: the Bo Diddley/Tejano rhythms of "Mi Vida Loca (My Crazy Life)," the lilting waltz of "In Between Dances," and a playfully romantic title cut. A charming album without a bad cut, Sweethearts Dance ranks with the best of Trisha Yearwood, Wynonna Judd and Carlene Carter.

MI VIDA LOCA (MY CRAZY LIFE)
(Pam Tillis - Jess Leary)
« © '94 Ben Future Music, BMI »

If you're coming with me you need nerves of steel
Cause I take corners on two wheels
It's never ending circus ride the faint of heart need not apply
Mi vida loca over and over destiny turns on a dime
I go where the wind blows you can't tame a wild rose welcome to my crazy life
[ mandolin ]
Sweetheart before this night is through I could fall in love with you
Come dancing on the edge with me let my passion set you free
Mi vida loca over and over...
[ guitar ]
Here in the firelight I see your tattoo mi vida loco so you're crazy too
Mi vida loca over and over...
We'll go where the wind blows and I'll be a wild rose welcome to my crazy life

Sweetheart's dance that's what they do
The two heart two step baby that's me and you
Sweetheart's dance round and round
Make pout in the corner lover's quarrel sweetheart's dance

Sometimes babe I hate you cause my love's so strong
And then you make me feel so right I think it must be wrong
You move me you move me this love don't make no sense
We make each other crazy baby dance the sweetheart's dance
Oh sweetheart's dance that's what we do...
[ guitar ]
Well now love sets us in motion and gets down around our feet
We're living to the rhythm of our hearts together beatin'
I love you I love you let me whisper in your ear
Let me kiss you on the shoulder honey let me hold you near
Dance the sweetheart's dance that's what we do...

Got your hand in my back pocket got your eyes all off in space
How bout we just get out of here and find a quiet place
Dance the sweetheart's dance...
We make each other crazy dance the sweetheart's dance

CALICO PLAINS
(Matraca Berg - Mike Noble)
« © '90 Songs Of Universal, BMI »

Sweet Abilena looked out at the midwestern sky
Sweet seventeen with a far away look in her eyes
She said I feel like a bird in a cage but come September I'm flying away
I said I'm gonna miss you then I made her promise to write
Since we were tall as the corn in the spring
We shared every secret shared every dream
So anxious to grow in the new summer rain
And bloom like a rose on the calico plains
[ dobro ]
How could she hear as we laughed on that long summer night
The tiny heart of the baby she carried inside
I stood beside her when September came
Watched her get married then caught the bouquet
And like those hand-me-down dresses she gave me I made her dreams mine
From a seat by the window on wings made of steel
I stared at the patchwork over the fields
Where young tears that once flowed like warm summer rain
Were turning to snow on the calico plains
[ mandolin ]
Sweet Abilena looks out at the midwestern sky
Closer to thirty but farther away in her eyes
She holds her babies like she holds her dreams
Each night she kisses and rocks them to sleep
She reads the letter she made me promise to write
Sweet Abilena looks out at the midwestern sky

WHEN YOU WALK IN THE ROOM
(Jackie DeShannon)
« © '63 Unart Catalog, BMI »

I can see a new expression on my face I can feel a strange sensation taking place
I can hear the guitars playing lovely tunes everytime that you walk in the room
I close my eyes for a second and pretend it's me you want
Meanwhile I try to act so nonchalant
I see a summer night with a magic moon everytime that you walk in the room
Maybe it's a dream come true standing right alongside of you
Wish I could show you how much I care but I only have the nerve to stare uh-huh
I can feel that something pounding in my brain
Just anytime that someone speaks your name
Trumpets sound and I heart thunder boom
Everytime that you everytime that you everytime that you walk in the room uh-huh

SPILLED PERFUME
(Dean Dillon - Pam Tillis)
« © '94 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

I ain't even gonna ask you I can read you like a book
Girl if I ever saw one that's an I can't believe I did that look
You look like something that the cat drug in
So I won't kick you while you're down
Just let me tell you friend to friend bout a block I've been around
Did you really think last night would last forever
Did you really think that guy hung the moon
Right now you hate yourself cause you knew better
But there's no use crying over spilled perfume
[ piano ]
There's a big diference between lonely and lonely for way too long
And I knew when he made his move you weren't feeling all that strong
So I bit my tongue cause I saw it coming as you danced so close to him
It's two steps forward and three steps back when a heart is on the mend
Did you really think last night...
[ piano ]
You feel in a moment of weakness well you just gatta pull yourself back up
Dry your morning after tears cause what's done is done
Did you really think last night...

I WAS BLOWN AWAY
(Laying Martine)
« © '94 Careers Music, BMI »

You drove up in your pickup truck that hot September day
Not a wisp of wind in the parking lot but honey I was blown away
And later on that fall at the Dixie Mall when I didn't know what to say
I seen hide nor hair of no dynamite but honey I was blown away
Big sister said you'd better watch out
I slammed my door and said you don't know what you're talkin' about
Mama said I sang when the telephone rang and she called out honey it's Ray
Like a piece of dust on a four lane road I was blown away
[ guitar ]
I'm talking bout smithereens just you in a pair of jeans now I know what crazy means
Big sister said you'd better watch out
I slammed my door and said you don't know what you're talkin' about
Then one Tuesday night daddy said some guy's on the porch with a big bouquet
And stood there with your slicked back hair and honey I was blown away
And when we slipped out back across the railroad track and you softly touched my face
Well I never did feel a train go by but honey I was blown away
Well I never did feel a train go by but honey I was blown away

THEY DON'T BREAK 'EM LIKE THEY USED TO
(Roger Brown - Jason Sellers)
« © '94 Golden Hook Music, BMI »

You're here in my arms right where you say you wanna be
While across the room I watch the one who set you free
It didn't take me long to mend the heart she tore in two
I guess they just don't break 'em like they used to
I guess she thought that wounded pride of yours would never heal
But you don't have one single scar as far as I can feel
And I see nothing but perfection when I look at you
Well I guess they just don't break 'em like they used to
They don't break 'em like they used to darling that's for sure
We're living proof there's nothing that true love can't cure
We put the pieces back together now you're good as new
I guess they just don't break 'em like they used to
[ guitar ]
All the tears have disappeared without a trace
Makes me think that heartaches don't last as long these days
We put the pieces back together now you're good as new
I guess they just don't break 'em like they used to
They don't break 'em like they used to...
Well I guess they just don't break 'em like they used to

IN BETWEEN DANCES
(Craig Bickhardt - Barry Alfonso)
« © '93 Almo Music, ASCAP »

There's room at my table why don't you pull up a seat
The music's inviting but I'm staying off of my feet
The floor's gettin' crowded but I don't wanna take part
I bet you can guess it's got something to do with my heart
I could sure use your company now but don't be mistaking my smile
I'm only in between dances sittin' it out for a while

The partners are chosen look at them waltzing away
The tempo gets slower closer and closer they sway
I've had my moments when I could get lost in the sound
When the song ended the one in my arms let me down
I could sure use your company now...

Have you been in my shoes I search your eyes for signs
Will you remain remember my name after it's closing time
I could sure use your company now...
I'm only in between dances sittin' it out for a while

BETTER OFF BLUE
(Walt Aldridge - Susan Longacre)
« © '94 Lehsem Music, ASCAP »

Who's that knocking in the middle of the night
With a hand full of flowers to make it all right
If you're thinking I'll forgive you one more time
I ain't that lonely and love ain't that blind
Well I'd be better off blue for a couple of nights
Better blue now than the rest of my life
Better off finding somebody new after what you put me through
Oh baby I'm better off blue

Wasn't it you said who said it was over now you're out there wantin' back in
It's the same old book with a brand new cover I'd have to be crazy to read it again
I'd be better off blue...
[ guitar ]
Better off blue as a midnight hour blue as the heart of a red hot flame
Better than buyin' your lame excuses praying somehow someday you'll change
I said I'd be better off blue...

TILL ALL THE LONELY'S GONE
(Bob DiPiero - John Scott Sherrill - Pam Tillis)
« © '94 Blood Sweat And Ink Music, BMI »

Well Hank made a livin' out of lonely he sang like a freight train whistle moan
Said you'll never get out of this world alive
As if he'd always known Lord Lord as if he'd always known
Rode down that hillbilly highway took a big black cadillac on home
And he said driver keep on driving till all the lonely's gone
Till all the lonely till all the lonely till all the lonely's gone gone gone
Let's just hold on to each other till all the lonely's gone

I told my mama dear sweet mama I'm tired and weary to the bone
Just let me walk along your flowers makes me wonder why I roam
Lord Lord makes me wonder why I roam
Feed me biscuits and milk gravy till your baby's feeling strong
We'll sit up picking on the front porch yeah till all the lonely's gone
Till all the lonely till all the lonely...
[ mandolin ]
Well now Jesus was praying in the garden he never felt so all alone
They knew his sufering was over yeah when they rolled away the stone
Lord Lord when they rolled away the stone
On golden stairs he walked to heaven and there he's waiting on the throne
He loves to hear his children sing and shout till all the lonely's gone
Till all the lonely till all the lonely...
