Prior to recording Years Ago, the Statlers purchased their old grammar school in their hometown of Staunton, Virginia, renovating the building to serve as their offices. (On the album cover, the group is photographed on the auditorium's stage.) Perhaps as a result, the record is even more nostalgic and sentimental than most of the Statlers' efforts, as evidenced by the song titles alone, including "Memories Are Made of This" and "Today I Went Back." Among the record's hits were "Don't Wait on Me" and "You'll Be Back (Every Night in My Dreams)."

DON'T WAIT ON ME
(Don Reid - Harold Reid)
« © '81 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
When the sun wakes up in the west and lays its head down in the east
When they ordain Madlin O'Hare and she becomes a priest
When a San Diego sailor comes home with no tattoo
When the lights go on at Wrigley Field I'll be coming home to you
But don't wait on me little darling Lord can't you see little darling
I only go so far then no guarantee
Don't wait on me to win you that's something I just can't do
Never have and don't listen to don't wait on me
When the wind don't blow in Chicago and LA is cold and clear
When they unfurl Old Glory and no one stands to cheer
When my brother in law phones me and the charges aren't reversed
When the cabble don't want a bigger tip I'll be slidin' home for first
But don't wait on me little darling...
When you load up on a long shot and he wins by half a nose
When the 4th of July parade is called because it snows
When the waiting room is empty and the doc says come right in
When Christmas caomes before New Years I'll be comin' home again
But don't wait on me little darling...
[ guitar ]
Don't wait on me don't wait on me

IN THE GARDEN
(Austin C. Miles)
« © '46 Word Music, ASCAP »
I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The son of God discloses
And he walks with me and he talks with me
And he tells me I am his own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known
[ guitar ]
He speaks and the sound of his voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing
And the melody that he gave to me
Within my heart is ringing
And he walks with me and he talks with me...
None other has ever known

YOU'LL BE BACK (EVERY NIGHT IN MY DREAMS)
(Wayland Holyfield - Johnny Russell)
« © '78 Sunflowers Music, BMI / PolyGram Int, ASCAP »
All my friends ask what they can do to help me get over you
But I'm not blue and all broken in two why should I miss you
Cause you'll be back every night in my dreams
You'll be back and it won't even seem
Like you're gone no I won't be alone
Cause you'll be back every night in my dreams
Walk the floor and cry until dawn watch the door and sit by the phone
Oh no not me why worry and moan just because you're gone
Cause you'll be back every night in my dreams...
Yeah you'll be back every night in my dreams...
I'll see you in my dreams dreams dreams

YEARS AGO
(Don Reid)
« © '80 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
I didn't come to kiss the bride so don't seat me on either side
I just came by to see the show
I'm close enough I'll stand right here I can see and I can hear
Course I heard it all years ago
I hear the organ play a minor melody
Is that the one they call their song
Church vows always make love sound so easy
But as long as you live is so long
I didn't come to kiss the bride nor come to call the groom outside
And no I can's stay to say hello
That's not the reason I came by I came today to say goodbye
To something that happened years ago
[ guitar ]
I hear the organ play a minor melody
Is that the one they call their song
What God joins together let no man put assunder
But it sure put us under right or wrong
Give the bride and groom my best and tell her mom and all the rest
That I was here but really had to go
Reception line's too long outside and I didn't come to kiss the bride
I did all that years ago
[ guitar ]
There's no reason I should stay the groom won't shake hands anyway
And I kissed the bride years ago

WE AIN'T EVEN STARTED YET
(Don Reid - Harold Reid)
« © '81 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
I just wanna say I still love you
And don't you ever forget
Some things may change but remember
Honey you and me we ain't even started yet
They say all good things have an ending
And I might to say they were wrong
But they don't know how I feel every morning
Cause they don't know how you feel all night long
And I just wanna say I still love you...
[ guitar ]
I took all the others before you
For better but most people for worse
But you have erased every mem'ry
You'll be the last but you feel like the first
And I just wanna say I still love you...
Honey you and me we ain't even started yet
Honey you and me we ain't even started yet

MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS
(Terry Gilkyson - Frankie Miller - Rich Dehr)
« © '42 Blackwood Music, BMI »
Take one fresh and tender kiss add one stolen night of bliss
One girl one boy some grief some joy memories are made of this
Don't forget a small moonbeam fold in lightly with a dream
Your lips and mine two sips of wine memories are made of this
Then add the wedding bells one house where lovers dwell
Three little kids for the flavor
Stir carefully through the days see how the flavor stays
These are the dreams you will savour
With his blessings from above serve it generously with love
One man one wife one love true life memories are made of this
Memories are made of this
