The Statler Brothers Sing Country Symphonies in E Major is a concept album of sorts, formatted like an orchestral performance (there's even an "intermission" instead of a side break); with the exception of the occasional string performance, however, this is an otherwise straightforward Statlers effort, featuring the minor hits "Monday Morning Secretary" and "Woman Without a Home."

MONDAY MORNING SECRETARY
(Don Reid)
« © '72 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
She leaves home at eight a little bit late
A little bit tired of it all
She unlocks the doors and does so much more
Than what she gets credit for
She opens the mail straightens up without fail
Last Friday evening's mess
She makes brand new coffee though her head's hurtin' awfully
By nine she's looking her best
And Monday comes dawning the world wakes up yawning
And Friday seems so far away
But there bright and early Monday morning secretary
You sure do look pretty today
[ guitar ]
At ten there's a break she don't always take
Just time for a powder and smoke
A salesman comes in looks her over end to end
And tells her a new dirty joke
She laughs off his pass like she's done in the past
She knows all those lines so well
Then at five she goes home to her cat and two rooms
And cries cause she's lonely as hell
And Monday comes dawning the world wakes up yawning...
You sure do look pretty today

BURNING BRIDGES
(Walter Scott)
« © '57 Broad River Publishing, BMI »
Found some letters you wrote me this morning
They told of a love we once knew
Now they're gone I'd burned them to ashes
Don't want nothing to remind me of you
Burning bridges behind me it's too late to turn back now
Burning bridges behind me all I want is to forget you somehow
Sold the house that we planned together
Said goodbye to the friends that we once knew
Then I moved to the faraway city
Trying hard to forget about you
Burning bridges behind me...
All I want is to forget you somehow

I WANT TO CARRY YOUR SWEET MEMORIES
(Lew DeWitt)
« © '72 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
I wanna carry your sweet mem'ries to my grave
At last I've broken off the chain
Now just a few shoppin' marts from Maine
Now and then a little jolt of sorrow hits my mind
But after a while I soon forget the pain
And go on with sweet memories of you
And find that I can live my life anew
And I erase each thought that I might want you back again
And I remember all you put me through
I don't wanna be your servant anymore I don't wanna be your slave
I just want remember all the good times that we shared
And carry those sweet mem'ries to my grave
[ fiddle - banjo ]
And now I'm free of most the pain
And I don't wanna hurt that way again
If I catch me longin' for the way things used to be
I just pick up a piece of broken chain
That chain recalls a lot to me
I'm reminded how things used to be
There's just some things I'd rather not remember about you
I just wanna have sweet memories
I don't wanna be your servant anymore...
I don't wanna' be your servant anymore...

I BELIEVE IN MUSIC
(Mac Davis)
« © '71 Screen Gems Music, BMI / Song Painter Music, BMI »
I believe in music I believe in love
I believe in music I believe in love
I could just sit around making music all day long
Long as I'm making music I know I can't do nobody wrong
And who knows maybe someday I'll come up with a song
That makes people wanna stop their fusin' and fightin'
Just long enough to sing along
I believe in music I believe in love
I believe in music I believe in love
[ strings ]
Music is love and love is music if you know what I mean
People who believe in music are the happiest people life ever seen
So clap your hands stomp your feet and shake your tambourine
Lift your voices to the sky God loves you when you sing
I believe in music I believe in love
I believe in music I believe in love
I believe in love

SPECIAL SONG FOR WANDA
(Don Reid - Harold Reid)
« © '72 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
Wanda was alone at nights while he was somewhere sailin'
A navy wife with too much spare time on her hands
His letters were a comfort and I think she really loved him
But paper words don't fill the space when someone needs a man
And I'd just like to sing a special song for Wanda
Cause Wanda was a special friend of mine
And somewhere making up his bed in Newport News Virginia
I hope Wanda hears my song and plays it one more time
Wanda gave me everything a body ever needed
But a body's needs will sometimes lead a soul to sin
She was only lonesome a wife on leave of duty
She went down in history and probably will again
And I'd just like to sing a special song for Wanda...
I hope Wanda hears my song and plays it one more time

I'LL BE YOUR BABY TONIGHT
(Bob Dylan)
« © '68 Dwarf Music, SESAC »
Close your eyes close that door you don't have to worry anymore
Cause I'll be your baby tonight
Dim the lights draw the shades honey you don't have to be afraid
Cause I'll be your baby tonight
Everything's all right
Old mockingbird's gonna sail away we'll just forget it
And the big bad moon's gonna shine like a spoon
We're gonna let it you won't regret it
Kick your shoes off mama have no fear
Bring your sweet self right over here
Cause I'll be your baby tonight
[ harmonica ]
Cause I'll be your baby tonight

WOMAN WITHOUT A HOME
(Don Reid)
« © '72 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
She was young and I was older she believed everything I told her
She gave her heart and soul to me and more I wanted
She left home and gave her life to me alone and I had no right to
Treat her like I treated those before but she loved it and wanted more
Sometimes I lied to make her happy
Sometimes she'd lie to see if I would lie some more
I hear now she's a mother North Carolina with her lover
And I'll bet she daily cusses me and she's got reason for it
But I hope life there is better but I hope he don't let her
Have too much time to spend alone cause she's a woman without a home

DELTA DAWN
(Alex Harvey - Larry Collins)
« © '72 April Music, ASCAP / U Catalog, ASCAP »
What's that flower you have on Delta Dawn
Delta Dawn what's that flower you have on
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by
And did I hear you say he was meetin' you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky
In her younger days they called her Delta Dawn
Prettiest woman you ever laid your eyes on
Then a man of low degree stood by her side
Promised her he'd take her for his bride
Delta Dawn what's that flower...
She's forty-one and her daddy still calls her baby
All the folks around Brownsville said she's crazy
Cause she walks downtown with a suitcase in her hand
Looking for a mysterious dark haired man
Delta Dawn what's that flower...
Delta Dawn what's that flower...
Delta Dawn what's that flower...

WEDDING BELLS
(Claude Boone)
« © '49 Morley Music, ASCAP »
I have the invitation that you sent me
You wanted me to see you change your name
I couldn't stand to see you wed another
But dear I hope you're happy just the same
Wedding bells are ringing in the chapel
They should be ringing now for you and me
But down the aisle with someone else you're walking
Those wedding bells will never ring for me
[ steel ]
I fancy that I see a bunch of roses
A blossom from an orange tree in your hair
And while the organ plays I'll love you truly
Please let me just pretend that I am there
Wedding bells are ringing in the chapel...
Those wedding bells will never ring for me

TOO MANY RIVERS
(Harlan Howard)
« © '64 Combine Music, BMI »
I wish I could come back to you love
I know that you want me to
But too much waters run under this old bridge
And there's too many rivers between me and you
There's too many rivers to cross babe
Too many dreams have been lost
And there's too many long nights I've turned and I've tossed
And there's too many rivers to cross
Now don't think for a moment I blame only you
We both killed the fruit on the vine
And when you try to put love back together
There's always a few little pieces you can't find
And there's too many rivers...
There's too many long nights...

THEY CAN'T TAKE YOU OUT OF ME
(Don Reid - Harold Reid)
« © '72 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
They took you out of the country
They took you out to see the things you wanted to see
They took you out to the places you wanted to go
But they can't take you out of me
They took you out of your plain dress
They took you out and made you what you wanted to be
They took you out of my Saturdays and Sundays
But they can't take you out of me
They took you out of our good times
They took you out of the things we used to do
They took you out of my reason for living
And I wonder did they take me out of you
[ guitar - steel ]
They took you out of our hometown
They took you out to give you opportunity
They took you out of the places we were going
But they can't take you out of me
They took you out of our good times...
Oh I wonder did they take me out of you
