DIESEL SMOKE DANGEROUS CURVES
(Cal Martin)
« © '66 Johnstone Montei Music, BMI »
I'm a drivin' this truck for a mountain road
I got a hot rod rig and I'm a flyin' low
My eyes are filled with diesel smoke
Air fan curves ain't no joke
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
I was out last night drinkin' beer with the guys
Got an achin' head and blood shot eyes
I ended up with a pretty little dame
I didn't even know her name
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
If I deliver this hot shot plate
I gotta get a goin' cause I'm runnin' late
These mountain grades are mighty steep
Can't stay away there ain't had no sleep
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
[ guitar ]
There's a cute little waitress at the bottom of the grades
She's got hot coffee already made
I gotta keep my eyes upon the road
Cause I'm goin' down the hill heavy load
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
Well I must have closed my eyes for a while
Cause here I am and I'm a runnin' wild
I turn my brakes strip my gears
Gonna have to ride her down I fear
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
I wish I'd left the wind alone
But it's too late now cause I think I'm gone
I got myself into this fix
Just because I drive to mix
Diesel smoke dangerous curves
Diesel smoke dangerous curves

SLEEPER FIVE BY TWO
(Billy Mize)
« © '66 Billy Mize Music, BMI »
I'm a rollin' this Jimmy on home my bones are tired and my eyes are red
I know the little woman's sawin' lots of logs on a great big king size bed
My best friend Saul installed me a sleeper on my rig for a pretty price too
But I ain't had much sleep these last ten days cause that sleeper's just five by two
Saul said Red that's a comfortable bed it's gonna seem like a paid vacation
But that little bitty runt is either pullin' a stunt or got no imagination
With your elbow in your nose and the other one in your toes
And a jack tryin' to run you clean through
Show me how to get some sleep in a sleeper five by two
[ guitar ]
I had to move that load on down the road cause I've got a deadline to keep
But I'm gettin' just a litte more burned everyday cause I'm gettin' just a little less sleep
Well both of my knees are gaulded and there's a burn up the side of my head
I can't afford a room cause I got a lotta bills and one is that king size bed
Well that little bitty sleeper on the back of my cab ain't fit for a rabbit hutch
Saul might a went to college but if he did he didn't acknowledge much
But if I wake up I'm gonna look Saul up and make him know what I've been through
He's gonna show me how to sleep in a sleeper five by two
[ guitar ]
Coffee's keepin' me straight but I'm in terrible shape to show for twenty tons of steel
But if you never been a fish in a sardine can then you couldn't figure how I feel
I think I've had enough this road's too tough I'm gonna find me a brand new rig
But first I'm gonna hit that king size bed and pull me a Rip Van Winkle
Well that sleepers gotta go or my name ain't Joe and I hope that lightnin' strikes me
I'll just lay there getting covered up in sweat wonderin' who up there don't like me
I'm a gonna tell Saul all I need is one more friend like you
Cause a torture chamber is what he's built it's a hot box five by two
Yeah show me how to get some sleep in a sleeper five by two

BLACK SMOKE A BLOWIN' OVER EIGHTEEN WHEELS
(Red Simpson)
« © '66 Central Songs, BMI »
Well woman don't you put no bets on me that I might settle down
Cause I'm just not the settling kind I gotta chase around
Well I'm a truck drivin' daddy and I keep on a goin'
And it's just about time that I'm gone
Cause black smoke blowin' over eighteen wheels well honey that's my home
Black smoke blowin' over eighteen wheels
Is the only home I've ever known
Black smoke a blowin' over eighteen wheels
Well honey that's my home
[ guitar - steel ]
Well I'd like to love you but I can't so I won't so what's the use to try
It wouldn't be long till my love was gone and I don't want to make you cry
So let's just kiss and say goodbye then I'll be gone
Cause black smoke blowin' over eighteen wheels well honey that's my home
Black smoke blowin' over...
Black smoke a blowin' over eighteen wheels
Well that's home sweet home

Well I drive the truck six days a week on the road
But on Sunday I come home
And she's waitin' with some kissin' and we're makin' up for all
Love I've been a missin' since I've been gone
She calls me Truck Daddy Truck Daddy
And I'm always true to my baby
[ guitar ]
Well I drive the truck six days a week...
And I'm always true to my baby

TAKE ME HOME
(Red Simpson - Gene Moles)
« © '66 Central Songs, BMI »
Rollin' I go rollin' along
I'm listenin' to that diesel hum a song
Well I'm just as happy as I can be
Cause my pretty baby she's a waitin' for me
So come on truck yeah take me on home
I'm longin' just to hold her again
And I miss her and want to kiss her again
We've been on the road for a long long time
But we'll get some rest at the end of the line
So come on truck take me on home
[ guitar + steel ]
Stoppin' stop just outside of town
At the truckstop where all the truckers hang around
Oh we got some cleanin' up to do
I need the shavin' you need a wash job too
So come on truck yeah take me on home
Come on truck let's go now gettin' close to home
There's the lights of that city and that's pretty

JACK KNIFE
(Roy Baham)
« © '65 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
I left Seattle and I was runnin' late
It was rainin' rainin' rainin' cats and dogs
Well that road was slick and full of little tricks
Like a walkin' on a slick hickory log
I had five axles in a while Mustang
I was pullin' seventy thousands on behind
As I rolled her out of town to turn Fort Lynn around
I built a fire and I let her unwind
Blindin' lights well rainy nights jack knife
[ guitar ]
Well I made that mountain went over the top
And I had her rolled out all the way
I went into a kerb that took a lotta nerve
As I felt that mountain sway
As that tandem shuttered then settled on down
I heard an airhold snap
Well there was no doubt I had to write her on out
Or let her jack knife in my lap
Blindin' lights well rainy nights jack knife
[ guitar ]
There's a lot of operators who can tell you how
A runaway rig can kill
So I said me a prayer and then I hit the air
And let her jack knife off of that hill
Well I crawled out of that pile of junk
Then I walked away with a smile
Yeah I got out with my life but a mean jack knife
Put me a walkin' for a while
Blindin' lights well rainy nights jack knife

TOMBSTONE EVERY MILE
(Dan Fulkerson)
« © '64 Aroostock Music, BMI »
All you big and barely men who roll the trucks along
Better listen you'll be thankful when you hear my song
You have really got it made if you're haulin' goods
Anyplace on earth but those Hangsville Woods
It's a stretch of road up north in Maine
That's never ever ever seen a smile
If they'd burried all the truckers that's lost in them woods
There'd be a tombstone every mile
When you're loaded with potatoes and you're headed down
You've got to drive the woods to get to Boston town
When it's winter up in Maine you'd better check it over twice
Cause that Hangsville road is just a ribbon of ice
It's a stretch of road up north in Maine...
[ guitar ]
When you're talkin' to a trucker that's been haulin' goods
Down that stretch of road in Maine they call the Hangsville Woods
He'll tell you that dyin' and goin' down below
Won't be half as bad as drivin' on that ice and snow
It's a stretch of road up north in Maine...
There'd be a tombstone every mile

BORN TO BE A TRUCKER
(Red Simpson)
« © '66 Central Songs, BMI »
She's always a waitin' with two loving arms when I get home
She tells me that she's lonely every minute while I'm gone
She keeps begging me to quit this road but I can't quit that's true
Cause I was born to be a trucker and that's all I wanna do
Well I would like to work in town but I can't I'm afraid
Cause you can't get a job in town unless you gotta trade
And the only trade I know is drivin' this old truck that's true
Cause I was born to be a trucker and that's all I wanna do
Born to be a trucker drivin' this old truck across the nation
Born to be a trucker that's my only occupation
I guess I'll keep on driving these trucks till I get old
Cause it's the only way of livin' this poor boy knows
Well I could have been a business man if I just gone to school
But I was born to be a trucker and that's all I wanna do
[ steel ]
Born to be a trucker...
I was born to be a trucker and that's all I wanna do

I'LL BE GOIN' HOME TO MOMMA
(Red Simpson)
« © '66 Central Songs, BMI »
Well I'm a goin' home I'm a goin' home I'm goin' home to momma
I'm goin' home I'm goin' home and I'm gonna stay home with momma
Well I've been a drivin' this old truck a hundred years it seems
It's been a long haul since I left momma back in Abilene
But this old trip's just about over and I'll be home again
I got two weeks of paid vacation and I can't wait to spend
Yeah I'm a goin' home I'm a goin' home...
[ guitar - steel ]
Well momma cried the day I left she cries every time
That woman's kinda silly but I sure love her and I'm mighty glad that she's mine
Her heart's just about as big as Texas and her love is sweet and true
And some of these day I'm gonna quit this road that's what I'm gonna do
Yeah I'm goin' home I'm a goin' home...
Yeah I'm goin' home to momma and I'm gonna stay with momma

PIGGYBACK BLUES
(Billy Graham)
« © '66 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
I got the piggyback blues what's a feller could do
When the cab of a truck's been his home
I got the piggyback I gotta change my ways
Cause the long old hauls are gone
Well the boss called us in about a month ago
Said fellows the long hauls are through
Take your trailer to the railroad yard
There's a flat car waitin' for you
There's a flat car a waitin' for you
I'd like to see Mary in Abilene and Susie in Omaha
I'd like to see Jeannie in Albequerk' and Betty in Wichita
And Betty in Wichita
I got the piggyback blues...
[ guitar ]
Well these piggyback cars are gonna change my life
I'll have to start to slippin' around
I'll have to get the kitch that I miss so much
In the places on the outskirts of town
Yeah the places on the outskirts of town
I got the piggyback blues...

OLD SAM
(Scott Turner - Jim Thornton)
« © '66 Central Songs, BMI »
Old Sam good old Sam his truck drivin' days are almost gone
You laughed at ole Sam who just walked out the door
He's been coffeeing up here for fifteen years or more
You won't want to listen well the coffee's on the house so you're stuck
Fifty mission caps and boots don't make a man safe in a truck
The same goes for fancy belt buckles and chain drive pocketbooks
The man ain't born that can tell another man's talent by his looks
Now I don't suppose those overalls did impress you a lot
Or that cold and useless arm the old man's got
That arm's gone because he jack-knified a rig in the fog
You see there was a child walkin' in the road searchin' for his lost dog
If someone needs help on the road well ole Sam's always ready
Oh they don't need to be female waiting all smiles young and pretty
He picks up every hitchhiker Sam says nobody's all bad
Well up to date seven of 'em's rolled him for every dime he had
You see there's more to drivin' a truck than gettin' from here to there
Ole Sam's a trucker's truck driver well they're mighty rare
Well my friend I hope you get the message that clothes don't make the man
Cause if every a man had the right to wear those clothes it's ole Sam
You may fill out ole Sam's shoes before your drivin' days are through
But you'll do a whole lot of livin' fore you do
To the folks who know him he's a lot more than just ole Sam
He's the blueprint the Lord used to make the truck drivin' man
Old Sam his truck driving days are almost gone

TRUCK DRIVIN' FOOL
(Red Simpson - Dennis Payne)
« © '66 Central Songs, BMI »
Well I drove the truck from New York all the way to San Antone
And that's a mighty long haul when you're all alone
But I like drivin' trucks and I make my livin' this way
Well I'm a truck drivin' fool and that's how I'm a gonna stay
I like to hear that diesel as it keeps on a hummin' along
I'm a shiftin' these gears and I'm singin' myself a song
Well I see a lotta country as I go on my way
Yeah I'm a truck drivin' fool and that's how I'm a gonna stay
Yeah I'm a truck drivin' fool and trucks have got the best of me
I guess I'll never settle down cause I couldn't stay you see
Cause when I'm drivin' that truck I'm like a schoolboy out to play
Yeah I'm a truck drivin' fool and that's how I'm a gonna stay
[ guitar ]
Once I started to marry a gal in a little country town
But she didn't like my truck so way went around and around
She tried to affect me and that's where she went astray
Cause I'm a truck drivin' fool and that's how I'm gonna stay
I'm a truck drivin' fool and that's how I'm a gonna stay
