As the official sequel to Blue (Unchained Melody was a collection of early recordings), You Light Up My Life: Inspirational Songs carried a lot of expectations. It was a record that should have consolidated LeAnn Rimes' status as contemporary country's brightest new star, but instead it does a curious thing — it positions her as an adult contemporary crossover artist. You Light Up My Life has as much pop as country, relying on such easy listening standards as the title track, "The Rose," and "God Bless America." As a result, the album has a bit of a bland, homogenous quality — it certainly could have used a bit of country grit. Rimes sings well throughout You Light Up My Life, but she often doesn't seem to connect completely with the material — it's telling that a remix of her previous hit "How Do I Live" stands out as one of the finest cuts here. You Light Up My Life is far from disastrous — Rimes has too much natural talent to be sunk by poorly chosen material — but it isn't the great leap forward it could have been.

YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE
(Joe Brooks)

So many nights I'd sit by my window waiting for someone to sing me his song
So many dreams I kept deep inside me alone in the dark now you've come along

And you light up my life you give me hope to carry on
You light up my days and fill my night with a song

Rolling at sea adrift on the waters could it be finally I'm turning for home
Finally a chance to say hey I love you never again to be all alone

And you light up my life...
And you light up my life...
It can't be wrong when it feels so right cause you you light up my life

ROSE
(Amanda McBroom)
« © '79 Cedos Music, BMI / Warner-Tamerlane Publishing, BMI »

Some say love it is a river that drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is like a razor that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love it is a hunger an endless aching need
I say love it is a flower and you its only seed

It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give
And the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed that with the sun's love in the spring becomes a rose

BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER
(Paul Simon)
« © '69 Paul Simon Music, BMI »

When you're weary feeling small when tears are in your eyes I will dry them all
I'm on your side oh when times get rough and friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled waters I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled waters I will lay me down

When you're down and out when you're on the street
When evening falls so hard I will comfort you
I'll take your part oh when darkness comes and pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down

Sail on silver friend sail on by your time has come to shine
All the dreams're on their way
See how they shine oh when you need a friend I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled waters I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled waters I will ease your mind your mind
I'll ease your mind

I BELIEVE
(Ervin Drake - Jimmy Shirl - Irvin Graham - Al Stillman)
« © '56 Gentleman Jim Music, ASCAP »

I believe for every drop of rain that falls a flower grows
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night a candle glows
I believe for every one who goes astray someone will come to show the way
I believe oh I believe

I believe above the storm the smallest prayer will still be heard
I believe that someone in that great somewhere hears every word
Every time I hear a new born baby cry or touch a leaf or see the sky
Then I know why I believe

Every time I hear a new born baby cry...

TEN THOUSAND ANGELS CRIED
(David Patillo)
« © '97 Heart Write Music, BMI »

Stillness filled the heavens on Crucifiction Day
Some say it rained I don't know if it's true
But I can just imagine ten thousand angels cry
That would seem like rain to me and you
The angels all stood ready to take him from the tree
They waited for the words from his voice
And when he asked the father why has Thou forsaken me
They watched the Saviour die of his own choice

I've never seen ten thousand angels cried
But I'm sure they did as they stood by and watched the Saviour died
God turned his head away he couldn't bear the sight
It must have looked like rain when ten thousand angels cried

As the sun slipped away the skies turned to gray
And when Jesus gave his all that's when the tears began to fall

I've never seen ten thousand angels cried...
It must have looked like rain when ten thousand angels cried

CLINGING TO A SAVING HAND
(Bill Mack)
« © '71 Road Ahead Music, BMI »

Sing me a song of praise and glory help this wandering child to understand
That when I close my eyes in sleep eternal I'll be clinging to a saving hand
I want you to sing to me about the rock of ages and sing about eternity so sweet
So that when I take my last breath of life I'll awaken at my Saviour's feet
[ fiddle ]
I want you to tell me about Paul and Matthew
And sing about my dear Saviour's birth
And tell about his trials and tribulations while he walk upon this heathen earth
Come on and sing me a song of praise and glory
Help this wandering child to understand
That when I close my eyes in sleep eternal I'll be clinging to a saving hand
I'll be clinging to a saving hand

ON THE SIDE OF ANGELS
(Gary Burr - Gerry House)
« © '97 Music Of Stage Three, BMI / Warner-Tamerlane Publishing, BMI / MCA Music, ASCAP »

I've never been so certain I've never been sure
We're on the side of angels if we believe this love is pure

Is it so hard to trust it cause we've been wrong before
There comes a time in every life we find the heart we're waiting for

After all the might have beens the close and distant calls
After all the try agains don't be afraid to fall
We're on the side of angels after all

Every time you touch me don't you feel it too
The gentle hand that's guiding us you to me me to you

After all the might have beens...

Heaven only knows why this took so long
But only heaven knows a love is right or wrong

After all the might have beens...

I KNOW WHO HOLDS TOMORROW
(Ira P. Stanphill)
« © '58 Singspiration Music, ASCAP »

I don't know about tomorrow I just live from day to day
And I don't borrow from the sunshine for the skies might turn to grey
And I don't worry about the future for this I know what Jesus said
And today I'm gonna walk right beside him
Cause he's the one who knows what is ahead

There are things about tomorrow that I don't seem to understand
But I know who holds tomorrow and I know who holds my hand

And each step is getting brighter as the golden stairs I climb
And every burden is gettin' lighter and all the clouds their silver line
There the sun it's always shining there no tears will ever dim the eye
At the ending of the rainbow where the mountains they touch the sky

There are things about tomorrow..
Yes I know who holds my hand

HOW DO I LIVE
(Diane Warren)
« © '97 Realsongs, ASCAP »

How do I get through one night without you
If I had to live without you what kind of life would that be
Oh I need you in my arms need
You to hold you're my world my heart my soul if you ever leave
Baby you'd take away everything good in my life

And tell me now how do I live without you I want to know
How do I breathe without you if you ever go
How do I ever ever survive how do
I how do I oh how do I live without you

There'd be no sun in my sky there would be no love in my life
There'd be no world left for me
And I baby I don't know what I would do I would be lost if I lost you
If you ever leave
Baby you would take away everything real in my life

And tell me now how do I live without you...
And tell me now how do I live without you...
How do I live without you...

AMAZING GRACE
(John Newton - Bill Walker - William J. Gaither)
« © '52 Bridge Building Music, BMI »

Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I'm found was blind but now I see
Twas grace that taught my heart to fear and grace my fears relived
How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed

When we've been there ten thousand years bright shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise than when we first begun
Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I'm found was blind but now I see

NATIONAL ANTHEM
(Traditional)
« © '97 September 6 Music, ASCAP / MCA Music, ASCAP »

Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming
And the rocket's red glare the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave
