Kim Richey's third album, Glimmer, continues her evolution toward a mainstream pop sound. Unfortunately, this evolution doesn't represent any artistic growth; in fact, the album in some ways is a step backward. Producer Hugh Padgham (best-known for his work with Genesis, the Police, and Sting and chosen by Richey because of his production of XTC's English Settlement) bathes the songs in a rather bland wash of sound, a significant change from the crisp production that characterized her first two albums. The production matches the lyrics, however, which are burnished to the point that little character remains. The concise and insightful lyrics that appeared on Bitter Sweet have given way to innocuous phrases that skirt dangerously close to cliché. Given the great music that characterized her first two albums, Glimmer is a disappointment. Let's hope that Glimmer is merely a sidestep for Kim Richey, and that she regains her footing for her next outing.

CAN'T LOSE THEM ALL
(Kim Richey - Maia Sharp - Paul Thorn)

I got good luck in my pocket and a good shine on my shoes
I got a silk shirt in my closet that I'm not afraid to use
Yeah a little fortune cookie told me help is on the way
The tables may be turning it could happen any day
You can't lose them all you can't lose them all
You can't lose them all
Well I could go down in history or I could go up in smoke
Be the center of attention or the butt of every joke
Yeah but every time I get shot down I justify the risk
Because I come a little closer to a hit with every miss
You can't lose them all...
Outside my window there's a blue horizon
But it seems so far away
A ray of hope that I can keep my eye on
[ guitar ]
If I'm playing on the B-team or I'm sittin' on the bench
It ain't for lack of trying or a lack of confidence
When I reach my full potential then somebody gets my drift
All the stars are gonna line up and the tides are gonna shift
You can't lose them all...

OTHER SIDE OF TOWN

You found a coffee shop you think you're gonna like a lot
On the other side of town
Nobody knows you there doesn't matter what you wear
On the other side of town
Anybody thinks to look they won't find you in the book
Cause you're on the other side of town
Life there suits you just fine outta sight you're out of mind
You're on the other side of town
You can come out now the coast is clear old ghosts don't run around here
No loose ends to tie you down
Don't have to worry that you'll run into somebody who remembers you
From that other side of town
You lay low for a little while where you don't have to fake a smile
On the other side of town
When you're ready I'll be too with open arms to welcome you
Back from the other side of town
You can come out now the coast is clear...
Careful you don't go so far you lose the best of who you are
[ guitar ]
You can come out now the coast is clear...

COME AROUND
(Kim Richey - Tim Krekel)
« © '99 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI »
I don't miss the good old days
I've learned a lot since then I've changed my ways
I'm not bothered by those things that used to get me down
Only when you come around
I don't carry much regret
We all hold something that we'd just as soon forget
And I remember like it was today
The love we found every time you come around
Every time you come around
Well I'm the first to say I should forget you and I wish I could
Sometimes wishes don't come true
It doesn't seem like much to ask
To live a life that isn't caught up in the past
But there's really no place else on earth
For me right now I wish you'd come around
I wish you'd come around why don't you come around

LAY IT DOWN

Have another drink yeah maybe dull the pain
Take another hit but that don't ever stop the rain
Smile away the hours you're never really there
You're safe behind the knowledge they don't know how much you care
But don't that stuff get awful heavy you know it occurs to me
You're gonna break your heart if you don't leave it be
Lay it down lay it all the way down
Leave the words unspoken bite your tongue instead
Ah but keep the fire smoking keep it humming in your head
Hold another grudge oh tight against your chest
Yeah note another slight so you can add it to the rest
Don't that stuff get awful heavy...
The truth leaks out a little every time
You tell another desperate joke
[ guitar ]
Yeah don't that stuff get awful heavy...

Opening leave it at fine ah just fine ooh I'm just fine
So how bout you how bout those big dreams
Did some come true according to plan
Are you married yet ah I thought you'd be by now
I forget what was her name
Ah what was her name ooh good ol‘ what's her name
And is it me you want for
You just lonely well aren't we all
I like the way you sound straight
Out of lost and found glad you called
You made me smile hell I laughed right out loud
And it's been a while and it feels real good
You know what I'd wish were I the wishin' kind
You'd take a trip down to my neighborhood
Ooh my neighborhood ooh come on down to my neighborhood
And is it me you want for...
Hello old friend

Oh no here we go again
You wanna take me back to way back when
Well I gotta tell ya I gotta say I got over yesterday
A long long time ago I cut it loose maybe you should too you know
You remember the way it never was
You've forgotten the things we didn't say
If you miss me the reason is because you remember the way
You remember the way it never was
Oh yeah you were always right we never argued we didn't fight
It was hearts and flowers true romance why not give it one more chance
Well I've already been why would I wanna go through that again
You remember the way it never was...
It was a long long time ago
I cut it loose maybe you should too you know
You remember the way it never was...

GOOD AT SECRETS
(Kim Richey - Maia Sharp)

Mona Lisa smiles but she'll never tell
Her lips are sealed she keeps it all to her self
She don't offer up a single clue
Mona Lisa's got nothing on you
You're good at secrets you like to keep it wrapped up tight
You're good at secrets not one to shed much light
On anything too close to home it's all better left alone
You're good at secrets you're good at secrets
So you closed the book and hid it away
Well there's a story here but you'd rather not say
A finger to your lips yeah you don't let nothing slip
You'll save it for another rainy day
You're good at secrets...
Just tell me one thing do you keep them or are they keeping you
Who's keeping who
[ guitar ]
You're good at secrets...

KEEP ME
(Kim Richey - Tom Littlefield)
« © '99 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI /
Door Number One Music, BMI / Songs Of PolyGram, BMI »
Save me a place away from all the other clutter
In the back of your mind
Somewhere safe where distance and the tears won't matter
Don't leave me behind
Wherever you go forever keep me yeah keep me
Don't say a word we took a vow unspoken
Thicker than blood
Forget the hurt and every promise bent or broken
What's left is more than enough
Wherever you go forever keep me keep me
Close to your heart never let me go
In every wind that lifts a prayer above a whisper and turns you around
In everything that makes you laugh out loud for no good reason
That's where I'll be found
Wherever you go forever keep me keep me
Keep me keep me keep me keep me

IF YOU DON'T MIND
(Kim Richey - Chuck Prophet)
« © '99 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI / Kingsblood Music, BMI »
There's no way to please you baby I know let's call it a day
There's nothing I can say or do to make it up to you anyway
Honey if you don't mind put it off till tomorrow
Honey if you don't mind let it lie for today
Honey if you don't mind cause it only brings sorrow
We know where that's going cause it's always the same
If you don't mind
Let's go see a movie baby we could hold hands in the dark
Maybe for a little while we could both forget who we are
Honey if you don't mind put it off till tomorrow...
I know there's no way of gettin' around it
Put it behind us or wish it away
I ain't got the strength left to fight it the space left to hide it
I don't want to feel it today
[ guitar ]
Honey if you don't mind put it off till tomorrow...

SO IT GOES
(Kim Richey - Bill Deasy)

Bound To Be Music, BMI / Songs Of PolyGram, BMI »
Some learn early and some learn hard
Somebody called me in from my backyard
And I heard the whispers something was wrong
And I knew you were gone
But the sun came up and the sun went down
Spring was waiting beneath the frozen ground
And I'll be seeing you around so it goes so it goes
I made some good friends and I made mistakes
Lost my religion and I found my faith
I tried to walk down every path I chose so it goes
And the sun comes up and the sun goes down...
Seems like a small offering in the grand scheme of things
But it gets me through yeah the thought of losing you
The sun comes up and the sun goes down...

LONG WAY BACK
(Kim Richey)
« © '99 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI »
It's a long way back down a lonely road
And the cold hard facts make for a heavy load
The forgiveness you ask could heal your soul
But it's a long way back yeah it's a long way back
And I might let you in and I might let you twist
Pardon every sin seal the bargain with a kiss
Too much has passed for me to walk you through this
And it's a long way back yeah it's a long way back
Wake up the world has changed and nothing is quite the same
A cold and bitter wind is hot on your heals old friend
[ guitar ]
It's a long way back from where I stand
You're clean off the map knee deep in no man's land
You ain't got no one to ask for a helping hand
And it's a long way back yeah it's a long way back
Long way back it's a long way back

DIDN'T I
(Kim Richey - Tim Krekel)
« © '99 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI »
Now the deed is done and the smoke has cleared
From the ashes some glimmer of the truth appears
It's a bitter pill a little hard to take
I'll be the first to claim my share of mistakes
But the way things stood I did the best I could
Didn't I didn't I didn't I
Try to make amends be a friend
Didn't I didn't I didn't I
Now the window's closed opportunity's fled
All that's left to do now is look back and shake our heads
And it breaks my heart and it makes me mad
And I'll never know how so good went so bad
But the way things stood I did the best I could...
Maybe time's the only way to find some way back from this
[ guitar ]
But the way things stood I did the best I could...
Didn't I didn't I didn't I

STRENGTH IN YOU
(Kim Richey - Dave Bassett - Samantha Brown)
« © '99 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI »
You been up all night down all day
Every road you take is turning you the wrong way
You're acting like you lost your only friend
Yeah you're looking like something that the cat drug
In and out of luck you're hanging by a prayer
If you think you're falling apart
I swear I'll be there forever to pull you back together
If you think you're coming unglued
And you've got a problem I'll share it
I will be the strength in you
I got this place we should go
Maybe have a drink with someone that I used to know
She held me up when I was down
But it's been a while since I've seen that face around
But I remember we always found an answer
If you think you're falling apart...
Sadness hides the lightinside of you
[ guitar ]
Hey don't you remember we always found an answer
If you think you're falling apart...

GRAVITY
(Kim Richey - Tom Littlefield)
« © '99 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI /
Door Number One Music, BMI / Songs Of PolyGram, BMI »
You can try and fight it but you wouldn't stand a chance
It's out of your control
Yeah you don't have to like it but the weight of circumstance
Is gonna take its toll
It ain't fair and it ain't right but that really doesn't matter does it now
That you've seen it fall apart
Cause it hurts just the same so it doesn't really matter who you blame
Maybe it's only gravity
When you're high and flying
The last thing on your mind is ever coming down
Yeah you can keep denying
Up until the time you hit the cold hard ground
It ain't fair and it ain't right...
Above the law we thought that we were
Above it all and it's easy looking back to say it couldn't last
But I guess we thought that we were something something else
It ain't fair and it ain't right...
Only gravity
