Kim Richey's second album avoids any sophomore slump and moves her toward a more pop-oriented sound than heard on her debut. The southern California sound of the late '70s looms large; the most obvious point of reference, both musically and thematically, is Karla Bonoff's self-titled first album, the one that Linda Ronstadt mined for her, Hasten Down the Wind. This means that on contemporary terms, Bitter Sweet falls somewhere between Rosanne Cash's country and Shawn Colvin's folk. Richey's songs are intimate examinations of romantic relationships between women and men, more often than not ones that have gone awry. But Richey sings even the most broken-hearted of the songs with a sense of optimism, and thus avoids sinking into maudlin self-pity. Best of all, Richey is a fine lyricist, capable of taking a cliché and twisting it or reinvesting everyday language with meaning. One such example is the single "I'm Alright," which starts with the throwaway line, "After all was said and done," followed by the abrupt, "There was nothing left to do." Throughout Bitter Sweet, Kim Richey makes it plain that she was one of the most gifted songwriters working out of Nashville in the late '90s.

EVERY RIVER

Once upon a time somewhere in your past
Someone said forever but the promise didn't last
Now you don't believe love is ever true
Steel yourself against the day when I stop loving you
When the day comes that I don't love you
Every star will fall out of the sky
And every mountain will tumble down
And every river run dry
For every drop of rain that ever touched the ground
For every tear that ever fell and never made a sound
I'll be there to hear you call
And I'll be there to catch you baby should you ever fall
When the day comes that I don't love you...
[ guitar ]
When the day comes that I don't love you...
And every river run dry

I'M ALRIGHT

After all was said and done there was nothing left to do
The hardest mile I ever walked was the one I walked away from you
Maybe I'm a little ragged around the edges
And I've been keeping a little more to myself these days
I'm alright shot down but I'm still standing
Yeah I'm alright a little banged up from the fall
But I'm alright still shaky from the landing
Yeah I'm alright after all
You know it's really not that bad no matter how bad it might feel
There ain't nothing time won't fix this ain't nothing that sometime won't heal
So maybe I've been walking a little wounded
I move a little bit slower now but that's OK
I'm alright shot down but I'm still standing...
And every now and then I think about you
Oh every now and then I cross the line
[ mandolin ]
I'm alright shot down but I'm still standing...

WILDEST DREAMS

Dialed up your number though it's kinda late
You said call anytime I got something to say
You need to know that I ain't fooling around
But if there's any question in case there's any doubt
Let me spell it out A to Z
Your kind honey is a dying breed
Yeah no one else ever done that to me
Not in a million years not in my wildest dreams
All I had to say was right on my lips
It was so much more than just a goodnight kiss
Hey this ain't something I would kid you about
But if there's any question in case there's any doubt
Let me spell it out A to Z...
We've stumbled onto something it's feeling pretty good
I knew it in an instant it only took one look
Let me spell it out A to Z...
(Not in my wildest) dreams (not in my wildest) dreams
(Not in my wildest) dreams (not in my wildest) dreams
Not in my wildest dreams

STRAIGHT AS THE CROW FLIES
(Kim Richey - Angelo Petraglia)

Against a blue sky a black shadow flies by
I guess he's got some place to go
Some mission's calling no high ground can slow him
The miles flash by down below
You know you can always count on me I'm like the river to the sea
As sure as day follows night
But I won't run a crooked mile and I won't wait for morning light
I'll come straight as the crow flies
Each night the north star reminds me I'm so far away
From the one light that's true
But my love's a strong tie that binds you to my life
And will go the distance for you
You know you can always count on me...
If there's ever anything you need
You only have to whisper in your dreams
[ guitar ]
You know you could always count on me...

I KNOW
(Kim Richey - John Leventhal)
« © '97 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI /
Lev A Tunes, ASCAP »
I should be gettin' some sleep I try and try
But I can't keep from picking apart everything that we said
Yeah I should be running this maze
Trying so hard to find a way to raise up the dead
I should fix the lock feed the cat take the clothes to the laundromat
Pay some bills and get a clue get up forget about you
I know I know
I shouldn't be spinning my wheels just to see how bad it feels
Just to see how far I won't go
I should be breaking these chains not dragging them round just to feel the pain
Never should've taken this road
I should fix the lock feed the cat take the clothes to the laundromat
Pay some bills and get a clue get up forget about you
I know I know I know but I can't let go
[ guitar ]
Yeah I should fix the lock feed the cat count my blessings all of that
Get a grip and get a clue get up and forget about you
I know I know yeah I know but I can't let go can't let go

FALLIN'
(Kim Richey - John Crooke)
« © '97 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI »
Feeling stronger uptown and braver
I'm moving straight through yesterday
Full on and higher now I've waded through the doubt
Opened up I'm turning every page
And I went outside and I looked up at the midnight night sky
And I saw a star fall down and I thought as it blazed across the night
I remember fallin' I remember fallin'
Best friend and lover felt like forever
Every fiber every day
Nobody quite like you never a voice so true
Too bright to ever fade away
And I went outside...
The story's over and I've lived through the ending
But that doesn't mean I wouldn't do it all again
[ guitar ]
I remember fallin' I remember fallin'
I remember fallin' I remember fallin' I remember
I remember

TO TELL THE TRUTH
(Kim Richey - Larry Gottlies - Angelo Petraglia)
« © '97 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI /
Julann Music, ASCAP / PolyGram Int, ASCAP »
I like to think nobody knows what's goin' on inside
You like to say it didn't mean a thing or hurt to say goodbye
I tell a joke you laugh too loud the party never ends
We're not fooling anyone so why try to pretend
To tell the truth I still love you tell the truth you still care too
I can see it in your eyes see it in your smile clear across the room
Tell the truth tell the truth
[ guitar ]
True love knows the real thing baby there's nowhere to hide
It hears every word you never say and sees through every lie
Maybe we could find a way to get beyond our pride
It's such a waste of precious time to keep up this disguise
Tell the truth I still love you...
Tell the truth I still love you

MY WHOLE WORLD
(Kim Richey - Tia Sillers)
« © '97 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
I'd almost convinced myself it wasn't true
Till the very moment he walked in with you
Now I'm pretending I'm not staring at the proof
There's no denying that inside I'm crying
As I watch you walk off with all my dreams
There goes my whole world up in smoke
And I might be laughing if I weren't the joke
There goes my whole world with someone new
There goes my whole world there goes my whole world with you
Hope you never find yourself here in my place
Watching him with someone else while your heart breaks
A little bit of that sure goes a long long way
I will remember this day forever
As I watch you walk off with all my dreams
There goes my whole world up in smoke...
There goes my whole world up in smoke...

LONESOME SIDE OF TOWN

There's a place I know too well been there and lived to tell
And I can see that you and me are almost halfway there
We're gettin' much too close feels like I've seen a ghost
I took a vow if I made it out you'd never catch me there again
No time to wonder why no time for long goodbyes
Last chance for gettin' out is fadin' with the light
I don't want to be around when the night comes down
On the lonesome side of town
You can hear each footstep fall run from shadows on the wall
And every day is just the same as the one that came before
You won't find any peace not here not on these streets
Misery loves company and there's enough to go around
No time to wonder why...
(On the lonesome side) on the lonesome side of town
[ guitar ]
No time to wonder why...
(On the lonesome side) on the lonesome side of town

DON'T LET ME DOWN EASY

The choice of words don't matter the meaning's still the same
It won't make me feel better to hear I'm not to blame
Someday I'll forgive you maybe then again I won't
But I take no consolation in what the future holds
Don't let me down easy just let me go
Don't tell me you'll call me when we already know
This goodbye will last forever so let the bad times roll
Don't let me down easy don't let me down easy that's a hard way to go
I should have seen it coming I should have faced the facts
The more love that I gave you the less love you give back
I guess I thought you'd come around yeah well we all make mistakes
There ain't nothin' good about this there ain't nothin' left to say
Don't let me down easy just let me go...

LET IT ROLL
(Kim Richey - Angelo Petraglia)
« © '97 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI /
PolyGram Int, ASCAP »
When I'm a breath away from going down
A step away from losing ground
And the price for love has come due
And when I'm just barely hanging on
On the edge of too far gone
And I need something to get me through
When there's no reason to believe
And life ain't all it's cracked up to be
Let it roll over me
When my last chance goes up in smoke
And I can't see a shred of hope
And tears can't wash away these blues
And when my best shot keeps falling short
And I don't care much anymore
Cause my poor heart feels used
When love ain't all that fair I sing out a simple prayer
Let it roll over me
Let it roll let is wash away let it all fall where it may
Let it roll right over me
[ dobro ]
When there's no place left to run
Yeah if that day should ever come
Let it roll over me
[ dobro ]
Let it roll over me
[ steel ]

WHY CAN'T I SAY GOODNIGHT
(Kim Richey - Angelo Petraglia)
« © '97 Mighty Nice Music, BMI / Wait No More Music, BMI /
PolyGram Int, ASCAP »
It's almost sunrise hours and hours gone by
Candles all burned down turned into morning light
The time to go has come and gone
Why can't I why can't I say goodnight
The whole world is sleeping and still I can't give in
It's a love story I never want to end
The time to go has come and gone
Why can't I why can't I say goodnight
I'm using up all my strength can't tear myself away
It only gets harder as night turns to day
There isn't one place honey that I'd rather be
Than right here in your arms with your head lying on me
The time to go has come and gone
Why can't I why can't I say goodnight
Darlin' why can't I say goodnight
