Since I usually talk through my guitar, I find it a little difficult to put words on paper. In this case, though, I find it easy to tell you about my best friend and favorite guitarist, Jerry Reed. I met Jerry for the first time around fifteen years ago. I would have signed him to RCA Records at that time but he was with another label. Anyway, his genius has continued to amaze me since that first meeting. By now you know all about Amos Moses and his high riding When you're hot, you're hot, and you've probably seen him numerous times on The Glen Campbell Show. If you're among the lucky ones, you've caught the Reed magic in person on one of the many road shows he does each year. I sometimes wonder if his fans realize Jerry writes a lot of his own material; not only that, but his songs have been recorded by many of the great ones - Tom Jones, Jimmy Dean, Glen Campbell and Dean Martin and - well, I guess I've made the point he's more than a mere singing guitar picker. In fact, he won the best instrumentalist of the year award last year from the Country Music Association. He was not in town; I accepted for him, took it home and promptly chopped it up. I presented him with the pieces and derned if he ain't still laughing. You know something? I agree with them; he's my favorite guitar player also. Well, I managed to get through a full paragraph on Jerry without so much as mentioning his golf game. I never thought I could do it! - Chet Atkins -

KO-KO JOE

(Ko-ko Joe Ko-ko Joe Ko-ko Joe Ko-ko Joe)
Way up in Appaloosa County there's a place called Ko-ko ridge
Sets a right on the bend on the Etowah River
Where the water washed away the bridge
Cotton Mouth Country a river rats knee high
Way up around the back border lived a man that the river folks talked about
They said you better stay away from Ko-ko Joe cause he's crazy no account
Ko-ko Joe they called him the Etowah River swamp rat and folks despised him
Ko-ko Joe he was an awfuly peculiar man the river was his only friend
And the folks didn't understand the man Ko-ko Joe
He eat monkey meat'n mashed potatoes he drunka brew called the Mojo Claw
that he beat outta roots from ol' dead stumps on the banks of the Etowah
Made him walk a little funny made his breath smell funky
Well he never came across the river cause the folks didn't like him in town
They said his hair was long his clothes were dirty they didn't want him hanging around
Ko-ko Joe they called him...
Well it happened a year ago Sunday and they still talk about it today
How the dam broke loose on the Etowah River nearly washed everybody away
Son the river water risin' washing up all the bushes
Well the headlines read how a mother said my son would have lost his life
But he was pulled from the mud in the Etowah River by the man y'all all despise
Ko-ko Joe they called him...

ANOTHER PUFF
(Jerry Reed Hubbard - Earl Jarrett)
« © '71 Vector Music, BMI / Sixteen Stars Music, BMI »
I know there's a lot of trouble talk going around today
About cigarette smoke whittlin' your life away
I've seen it and I've heard it so many times
That finally I started praying on my mind
I guess it scared me a little bit
That's why I decided I was going to quit
So while I was sitting here forming my battle plan
I took another puff and turned on the fan
I just sat there in the easy chair
And thought about all the money I've spent on cigarettes all these years
I thought how I'd spend the rest of my days
After I quit this habit my body hates
I said to myself that ain't gonna to be so tough
And with that little bit of insurance I took another puff
I took a puff I puffed then I ripped off another puff
I decided I about had about enough
And breaking this habit ain't gonna be so tough
Now I gave a lot of thought to this thing
If I didn't smoke cigarettes I'd feel just like a king
Besides with all the price going up every day
I knew I was just throwing all my good money away
You know I haven't lit one in an hour or so
Just wanted to make sure I could quit you know
I was thinking I ought to write all this down
and put this all in a song kinda circulate it around
Can't tell it might make a little hit not after they call a little bit
Imagine me a hit's alright
Now where'd I put that cigarette lighter
After all it's a habit and a habit you can break
Just a little bit of willpower son that's all it takes
I said to myself you gotta be tough
And with that little bitty wisdom I took another puff
I took a puff and I puffed then I ripped off another puff
I decided I about had about enough
And breaking this habit ain't gonna be so tough
I'm about ready to quit it's about to happen anyway
Oh I think they ought to take it off the television it looks too good
I like a skinny one without the filter
Give it to me give it to me take that
If I quit smoking what'll I do maybe I'll eat
Maybe I'll eat cigarettes
Santa Claus don't smoke he smokes logs
Makes you laugh funny too oh my throat's scratching
Lors I'm just thinking something bad about cigarettes
Boo on cigarettes ha ha ha
Don't smoke don't smoke don't smoke
You could smoke a little more for me
No I don't love cigarettes
You know I'm misunderstanding I hate cigarettes
Makes you cough when you don't smoke it makes you shake
I don't worry bout shake or the cough
Son did you ever smoke oh I think one time I'll quit smoking
My wife left so did my children she took my house and left

EARLY MORNING RAIN
(Gordon Lightfoot)
« © '62 Witmark & Sons, SESAC »
In the early morning rain with a dollar in my hand
With an aching in my heart and my pockets full of sand
I'm a long way from home and I miss my loved ones so
In the early morning rain with no place to go
Out on runway No 9 big 7-0-7 set to go
While I'm stuck here in the grass where the chilly cold wind blows
Now the liquor tasted good and the women all were fast
There she goes my friend she's a rolling now at last
[ strings ]
This old airport's got me down it's no earthly good to me
Cause I'm stuck here on the ground cold and drunk as I can be
And you can't hop a big jet plane like you can an freight train
So I'd best be on my way in the early morning rain
In the early morning rain in the early morning rain

BRAND NEW DAY
(John Ragsdale)
« © '71 Vector Music, BMI / Sixteen Stars Music, BMI »
Staring out through the falling rain
Heading lights reflecting off the highway
The light ahead turns from red to green
Thank God something's going my way
It's been raining all my life it seems
Fortune hasn't followed me around
And I left a trail of broken dreams
But yesterday's the stage won't get me down
A brand new day is dawning and calling me to going once again
A brand new day is warming my soul
Telling me that life is still a friend
And all the times I've stumbled yesterday
All grown and forgotten with the wind
[ guitar ]
A brand new day is dawning...

NOT AS A SWEETHEART (BUT JUST AS A FRIEND)
(Cindy Walker)
« © '71 Vector Music, BMI / Sixteen Stars Music, BMI »
Please don't hang up on me honey I've just called to say
That I'm leavin' and I won't be back again
And asked you if you'd see me and be with me one more time
Not as a sweetheart but just as a friend
Not as a sweetheart for I know your love is gone for me
But just for old time sake leave me a memory do this for me
And please would you take my hand just kiss me one more time
Not as a sweetheart but just as a friend
Well thanks darlin' anyway no you can't break your date
And plans can't wait and broken hearts can't mend
So bye bye now you be a sweet girl and honey think of me sometimes
Not as a sweetheart but just as a friend
Not as a sweetheart for I know your love is gone for me
But for the sake of my aching heart say something sweet to me for I used to be
Your one and only and it hurts to see it end
Not as a sweetheart but just as your friend
Not as a sweetheart but just as your friend

YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE
(Richard Rodgers - Oscar Hammerstein)
« © '45 Williamson Music, ASCAP »
Baby when you walk through a storm hold your head hold it high
And don't you be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm is a bright golden star
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed tossed and blown
Baby walk on walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never never never walk alone
You will never never never walk alone
[ guitar ]
Baby walk on walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never never never walk alone
You will never never never walk alone

(LOVE IS A) STRANGER TO ME
(Jerry Reed Hubbard)
« © '71 Vector Music, BMI / Sixteen Stars Music, BMI »
You're gone so long to my heart to my happiness
But there'll be memories of you just as long as I live I guess
Ever since you've been gone everything is turned out wrong
And without your love happiness is a stranger to me
I take a long walks and small talks with anybody I can find
A new place a new face just anything to keep me from losin' my mind
But no matter what I do it just ain't the same without you
Yes without your love happiness is a stranger to me
Those yesterdays with you were such a part of me
And without you oh how everything has changed
Cause now I see the world only through my teardrops
And through lonely eyes the world don't look the same
No use can't lose all the beautiful memories
And no one can come even close to the love that you gave to me
All my happiness was just loving you I guess
So till you come back love is a stranger to me
Yes till you come back love is a stranger to me
Till you come back love is a stranger to me

SEASONS OF MY MIND
(Sonja B. Yancey)
« © '71 Vector Music, BMI / Sixteen Stars Music, BMI »
As the rain drops gently on my window
It's splashin' very quietly to the ground
I see myself a running through the springtime
With someone who I have never found
And someday I know she's gonna make me happy
Oh she's waiting in the seasons of my mind
As the sun shines brightly on my window
And the flowers stretch their faces to the sky
I can almost see the face of my true lover
Laughin' as she rushes to my side
And someday I know she's gonna make me happy
Mhm she's waiting in the seasons of my mind
And the leaves fall from the trees and pass my window
Painting happy pictures where they lay
And I can see my true love there beside me
Loving all my loneliness away
And someday oh she's gonna make me happy
She's waiting in the seasons of my mind
Now the snow drips softly through my daydreams
And it covers up the flowers and the leaves
My heart and my dreams now are sleeping
But winter always promises the spring
And someday oh she's gonna make me happy
Oh she's waiting in the seasons of my mind
Someday she's gonna make me happy
Oh someday she's gonna make me happy
