Fans of Ray Price or Bob Wills won't want to miss the Price's 1961 album, San Antonio Rose: A Tribute to the Great Bob Wills. Price, who acknowledged Wills as a primary influence, became the first of many to devote an album to covering the songs of the renowned master of Southwestern dance music. Price recorded the album in a nine-hour period, utilizing many of Nashville's best musicians, including guitarist Grady Martin, fiddler Tommy Jackson, pedal steel specialist Jimmy Day and pianist Pig Robbins (in one of his first Nashville sessions). Also sitting in on acoustic guitar was a new Music City arrival, a little-known songwriter named Willie Nelson, who had just been hired to crank out songs for Price's publishing company. The record finds Price crooning with smooth, easy richness while the band lets it fly.

SAN ANTONIO ROSE
(Bob Wills)
« © '40 Bourne Co, ASCAP »
Deep within my heart lies a melody
A song of old San Antone
Where in dreams I lived with a memory
Beneath the stars all alone
It was there I found beside the Alamo
Enchantment strange as the blue up above
A moonlit pass that only she would know
Still hears my broken song of love
Moon and all your splendor knows only my heart
Call back my Rose Rose of San Antone
Lips so sweet and tender like petals fallin' apart
Speak once again of my love my own
Oh broken song empty words I know
Still live in my heart all alone
For that moonlit pass beside the Alamo
And calls my Rose of San Antone
[ fiddle - steel ]
Moon and all your splendor...

MAIDEN'S PRAYER
(Bob Wills)
« © '40 Bourne Co, ASCAP »
When the evening falls twilight shadows find
There beneath the stars an Indian maiden divine
The moon is on high and seems to see her there
In her eyes there's a light shining ever so bright
As she whispers a silent prayer
Every word reveals an empty broken heart
Broken by fate that's keepin' them so far apart
Lonely there she kneels and tells the stars above
In her arms he belongs and her prayer is a song
Her undying song of love
[ fiddle ]
Every word reveals an empty broken heart...

MY CONFESSION
(Bob Wills)
« © '60 Anne Rachel Music, ASCAP »
Sweetheart I'm all alone tonight thinking about my wasted past
I see that you were always right and now I'm at your feet at last
Take my heart and let it live this is all I have to give
So please believe me when I say for all the wrongs I've done I'll pay
[ fiddle ]
Sweetheart you know I love you so why did I ever let you go
In dreams you're all that I can see so won't you reconsider me
My confession to you dear makes me shed a silent tear
My heart would be so light sweetheart if you would say we'll never part

WHOSE HEART ARE YOU BREAKING NOW
(Fred Rose)
« © '62 Milene Music, ASCAP »
I was the one that you fooled yesterday whose heart are you breaking now
You took a romance and threw it away whose heart are you breaking now
What has become of the the love I once knew what have you done with each vow
Somebody else now is game for a day whose heart are you breaking now
[ steel - fiddle ]
I was the one that you left all alone whose heart are you breaking now
You were the one with a heart made of stone whose heart are you breaking now
I used to think you would always be me everything's different somehow
You're smiling now but some day you will pay whose heart are you breaking now

Roly Poly eatin' corn and taters hungry every minute of the day
Roly Poly knowin' all the biscuits as long as he can chew it it's okay
He can eat an apple pie and never even bat an eye
He likes everything from a soup to hay
Oh Roly Poly daddy's little fatty daddy's gonna be a man someday
[ steel ]
Roly Poly scrambled eggs for breakfast bread and jelly twenty times a day
Roly Poly eats a hard day dinner it takes a lot of strenght to run and play
He bowls up weeds and does the chores and run both ways to Holday's stores
He waers up that apetite that way
Hey Roly Poly daddy's little fatty daddy's gonna be a man someday

BUBBLES IN MY BEER
(Cindy Walker - Bob Wills - Tommy Duncan)
« © '48 Unichappell Music, BMI / Red River Songs, BMI »
Tonight in a barroom I'm sitting apart from the laughter and cheer
The scenes of my life past before me while watching the bubbles in my beer
A vision of someone who loved me brings along silent tear to my eye
I know that my life's been a failure just watching the bubbles in my beer
[ guitar ]
I'm seeing the road that I've travelled a road paved with heartaches and tears
I'm seeing the past that I've wasted while watching the bubbles in my beer
I think of the heart that I've broken and the golden chances that have passed me by
The dreams I've once made now are over as empty as the bubbles in my beer

HOME IN SAN ANTONE
(Floyd Jenkins)
« © '59 Milene Music, ASCAP »
Haven't got a worry haven't got a care
Haven't got a thing to call my own
Though I'm out of money I'm a millionaire
I still have my home in San Antone
When I greet my neighbor with a hi y'all
I'm wealthy as a king upon a throne
You can have your mansion or your cottage small
I'll just take my home in San Antone
I'm travelled o'er the country on my merry way
Been in crowds and felt I was alone
When I feel like braggin' I just up and say
I'm a native son of San Antone
There's a sweet somebody by the Alamo
Someday she's gonna be my very own
And we'll buy (Then we'll get) a highchair in a year or so
For our little Home In San Antone

YOU DON'T LOVE ME (BUT I'LL ALWAYS CARE)
(Lou Wayne)
« © '55 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
Yesterday brought love as sweet as clover
Every kiss was fresh as morning rain
But today you told me it's over
And my heart is burdened down with pain
Though it hurts me when you are so cold dear
And you know our love's beyon repair
Our love cheapen what was pure as gold dear
You don't love me but I'll always care
[ fiddle - steel ]
Darling I am glad that I have known you
Every sorrow that we have to share
And in dreams I know I'll always own you
You don't love me but I'll always care
Though it hurts me when you are so cold dear...

YOU DON'T CARE WHAT HAPPENS TO ME
(Fred Rose)
« © '62 Milene Music, ASCAP »
Darling I love you so and it's kind of hard to know
That you don't care what happens to me
When the shadows creep through how I worry over you
Well you don't care what happens to me
I wanted a true love that never would die
But somehow it just couldn't be
Now the tears dim my eyes everytime I realize
That you don't care what happens to me
[ fiddle - steel ]
Darlin' let's not pretend cause our love affair must end
You don't care what happens to me
Now I know in my heart that I only played a part
Cause you don't care what happens to me
I'll try and forget you and start life anew
I know that you're glad to be free
Give me one goodbye kiss cause you can't go on like this
Oh you don't care what happens to me

TIME CHANGES EVERYTHING
(Tommy Duncan)
« © '54 Red River Songs, BMI »
There was a time when I thought of no other and we sang our own love's refrain
Our hearts beat as one as we had our fun but time changes everything
When you left me my poor heart was broken our romance seemed all in vain
The dark clouds're gone and there's blue skies again the time changes everything
[ fiddle - steel ]
You can change the name of an old song rearrange it and make it swing
I thought nothing could stop me from loving you but time changes everything
So goodluck to you may God bless you I can't say I won't love again
You've gone your way and now I'll go mine cause time has changed everything

KIND OF LOVE I CAN'T FORGET
(Bob Wills)
« © '60 Bourne Co, ASCAP »
The kind of love I can't forget dear was the love you gave to me
I had my chance and now I suffer my heart is filled with misery
Your heart was kind and oh so faithful it should have never known distress
And then my sorrow I am weeping though you don't care I must confess
[ fiddle - steel ]
So why not take me back again dear we could live so happilly
The kind of love I can't forget dear was the love you gave to me

HANG YOUR HEAD IN SHAME
(Fred Rose - Ed G. Nelson - Steve Nelson)
« © '56 Milene Music, ASCAP / Anne Rachel Music , ASCAP »
Oh don't your conscience ever bother you everytime you hear my name
Try to think of all that I've gone through and hang your head in shame
Someone came along and took my place then you gave me all the blame
You should go somewhere and hide your face and hang your head in shame
[ fiddle - steel ]
When you said I was the only one twas just your little game
Try to think of all the harm you've done and hang your head in shame
I should hate you but I love you still in my heart I've kept the flame
You'll be sorry darling yes you will and hang your head in shame
