Elvis Today is often cited by writers as Elvis' uncertain return to his Sun origins. There really isn't that much difference from the trio that resulted from 1973's Stax sessions, with the lesser tracks being a bit more substantial. The sound is better but the packaging had become, at this point, practically offensive: One color close-up after another, almost all from the Aloha from Hawaii special (or that pre-bloated period), back covers with no notes or technical data, just ads for other Presley Product. Still, an album with "Susan When She Tried," "T-R-O-U-B-L-E," and a hilariously appropriate reading of "I Can Help" is worth listening to any time.

T-R-O-U-B-L-E
(Jerry Chesnut)
« © '75 Tree Publishing, BMI »
I play an old piano from nine till a half past one
Tryin' to make a livin' watchin' everybody else havin' fun
Well I don't miss much that ever happens on a dancehall floor
Mercy look what just walked through that door
Well hello t-r-o-u-b-l-e what in the world you doin' all a a-l-o-n-e
Say hey good l-double o-k-i-n-g I smell t-r-o-u-b-l-e
I was a little bitty baby when my papa hit the skids
Mama had a time tryin' to raise nine kids
Told me not to stare cause it was impolite
And did the best she could to try to raise me right
Hey but mama never told me bout nothin' like y-o-u
Say your mother musta been another somethin' or the other too
Hey good l-double o-k-i-n-g I smell t-r-o-u-b-l-e
Well you talk about a woman I've see a lotta others
With too much somethin' and not enough of another
You've got it all together like a lovin' machine
Lookin' like glory and walkin' like a dream
Mother nature's sure been good to y-o-u
Well your mother musta been another good lookin' mother too
Say hey good l-double o-k-i-n-g I smell t-r-o-u-b-l-e
Well you talk about the trouble makin' hunka pokey bait
The men are gonna love and all the women gonna hate
Remindin' them of everythin' they never gonna be
Maybe the beginnin' of a world war three
Cause the world ain't ready for nothin' like y-o-u
Well I bet your mother musta been another good lookin' mother too
Say hey good l-double o-k-i-n-g I smell t-r-o-u-b-l-e

AND I LOVE YOU SO
(Don McLean)
« © '70 Benny Bird Music, BMI / Songs Of Universal, BMI »
And I love you so the people ask me how
How I've lived till now I tell them I don't know
Guess they understand how lonely life has been
But life began again the day you took my hand
And yes I know how lonely life can be
The shadows follow me and the night won't set me free
But I don't let the evening get you down
Now that you're around me
And you love me too your thoughts are just for me
You set my spirits free I'm happy that you do
The book of life is brief once the pages read
All but love is dead that is my belief
And yes I know how lonely life can be...

SUSAN WHEN SHE TRIED
(Don Reid)
« © '73 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
I got over Charlotte Thompson Goldie Johnson Lord they done me wrong
I took it hard with Peggy Harper she hurt me bad but Lord not for long
There's just one I remember makes me feel funny down inside
I'd trade 'em all for just an hour of Susan when she tried
No there's never been a woman who could make me weak inside
And give me what I needed like Susan when she tried
It gets worse in the summer when the nights are hot and long
And it's bad in December when they play those Christmas songs
So if you ask me I don't tell you bet your sweet bottom dollar I lied
Cause there's never been one better than Susan when she tried
No there's never been a woman...

WOMAN WITHOUT LOVE
(Jerry Chesnut)
« © '69 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Her eyes tell the story so well she tries hard to hide
So little expected too often neglected a woman stripped of her pride
Always so careful not to cry until I fall asleep
And there in the silence she lies with the tears on her cheek
A thought comes to mind that I read it sometime I hear it I can't quite recall
That a man without love's only half of a man but a woman is nothing at all
She knows I don't love her although heaven knows how I've tried
Her reason for living's to go right on giving one thing that's she's been denied
Without any warning in the hours of the morning she cries
Hurt deep inside that she's tried so to hide is beginning to show in her eyes
A thought comes to mind...
Yeah a man without love's only half of a man but a woman is nothing at all

SHAKE A HAND
(Joe Morris)
« © '56 Regent Music, BMI / TMIB Music, BMI »
Just leave it to me don't ever be ashamed
Just give me a chance I'll take care of everything
Your troubles I'll share let me know and I'll be there
I'll take care of you anyplace and anywhere
Shake a hand shake a hand shake a hand shake a hand
Shake a hand shake a hand shake a hand if you can
Be truthful to me I'll be truthful to you
I'm in love with you so till I don't know what to do
So let's call it a day I said all I have to say
Except don't forget to pray and shake a hand every day
Shake a hand shake a hand...
One more time
Shake a hand shake a hand...
Shake a hand shake a hand...

PIECES OF MY LIFE
(Troy Seals)
« © '74 Irving Music, BMI »
A waterglass full of whiskey women that I never knew too well
Lord the things I've seen and done most of which I'd be ashamed to tell
I don't know how it started that's what makes a man a man I guess
Now I'm holding on to nothing trying to forget the rest
I'm looking back on my life to see if I can find the pieces
I know that some were stolen and some just blew away
Well I found the bad parts found all the sad parts
But I guess I threw the best parts away away away
Playing the bars playing like a star anything to get a name
Carrying on living on songs my friends wrote to me to sing
I'm looking back on my life...
Lord the pieces of my life they're everywhere they're everywhere
And the one I miss most of all is you and you know who
Looking back on my life Lord to see if I can find the pieces
Looking back on my life today to see if I can find the pieces
Looking back on my life God help me find the pieces

FAIRYTALE
(Anita Pointer - Bonnie Pointer)
« © '75 Ensign Music, BMI / Polo Grounds Music, BMI »
I'll pack up all my things and walk away
I don't want to hear another word you have to say
I've been waiting for so long I just found out there's something wrong
And there's nothing will get better if I stay
There's no need to explain anymore
I tried my best to love you now I'm walking out the door
You used me you deceived me and you never seemed to need me
But I'll bet you won't forget me when I go
Seems I've been lost in a dream pretending that you care
(But now I've opened up my eyes)
And found it's all been just a great big fairytale
I've been lovin' you so long don't you think I'd even know how to forget you
Yeah the way that things have been
I think I'm better off alone than to be with you
(You don't love me it's plain to see)
There's no need to explain anymore...
(Seems like I've been lost in a dream) yeah pretending you were mine
(Someday you'll open up your eyes) and realize that a good woman's hard to find

If you've got a problem I don't care what it is
If you need a hand I can assure you this

It would sure do me good to do you good let me help
It's a fact that people get lonely it ain't nothing new

BRINGIN' IT BACK
(Greg Gordon)
« © '74 Warner-Tamerlane Publishing, BMI »
If I could never see you if I could never hold you
If I could never touch your face or feel your warm embrace
I'd still remember talking I'd still remember laughing
I'd still remember loving a lot and just touching you you know I've not forgot
Cause everything is bringin' it back you know it's bringin' it back
A familiar place or a familiar face just brings it all back
Everything is bringin' it back a good song's just bringin' it back
And even after so much time you know everything's bringin' it back
I'm thinking in my solitude wondering about your attitude
Thinking maybe that your love has died there it is I can see it in your eyes
Your look of sweet surrender but with a touch of too much sadness
Cause I hurt you so you know your sorrow shows ond you just can't stay
Oh but you know that you can't let go
Everything is bringin' it back...
Everything is bringin' it back...

GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME
(Curly Putman)
« © '65 Tree Publishing, BMI »
The old hometown looks the same as I step down from the train
And there to meet me is my mama and my papa
Down the road I look and there runs Mary hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home
Yes they'll all come to meet me arms areaching smiling sweetly
Oh it's so good to touch the green green grass of home
The old house is still standing though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's that old oak tree that I used to play on
Yeah down the lane I walk with my sweet Mary hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green green grass of home
Yes they'll all come to meet me arms areaching smiling sweetly
Oh it's so good to touch the green green grass of home
Then I awake and look around me at the four grey walls that surround me
And I realize that I was only dreaming
There's a guard and there's a sad old padre arm in arm we'll walk at daybreak
Again I'll touch the green green grass of home
Yes they'll all come to see me in the shade of that old oak tree
As they lay me neath the green green grass of home
