lp discography - covers & lyrics

Since this is the beginning of the story, I guess I should start with the first time I met Kenny Price. It was in a little town - Union, Kentucky - where Bobby Bobo owned a music store. Although I had never met him before, it seemed I'd known him all my life, and to write all the events that followed - what with the bowling game and going out to see Union - would require more space than I have to write... And the next day I watched Kenny work, sing and perform under a severe handicap (if you know what I mean). I am happy to say that from that day on Kenny and I have been close friends. With as much talent as Kenny has, and has always had, it is hard to believe it was a while before he had that first big hit. Seems to me he should have been born with a gold record. While I have the chance, I want to thank him personally for writing one of my biggest recordings, Going In Training. See, that goes to show, not only is he a great person and performer but he is also a great writer. I don't think anyone was happier than I when Kenny started having hits - originally on Boone, now on RCA, where he is happy to be and they are happy to have him. So I was honored when Kenny's A&R man, Ronny Light, asked me to write this liner. I was on my way to Oklahoma City at the time, but I thanked him and assured him I would write it either while going or coming back. So, as I sit here on this 727 returning to Nashville, I'm thinking of the first time I watched Kenny work, the first time I heard him sing, the first time I discovered his writing ability and his showmanship. But, most of all, the great way this Round Mound of Sound has of making friends and being a friend. So if you don't know him this way, you have not yet met him and you don't have this album. If you are reading these notes in a store or on a friend's album and you haven't bought it for yourself, do so and take my word - you will know what I mean. - Hank Cochran -

NORTHEAST ARKANSAS MISSISSIPPI COUNTY BOOTLEGGER

(Ed Bruce) « © '70 Tree Publishing, BMI »
There wadn't nobody that ever liked him farless loved him
If you never got the chance to get to know him
You wouldn't thought too much of him
Folks said he was half mean
If that was so that's all the mean he had to be
As big as he was
He was ma daddy and he raised me
The northeast Arkansas Mississippi County bootlegger

I can't say that all he did in his life was always right
I've heard talk back before I was born that he killed a man in a fight
But all I know about him
Was how he took care of his own
And some he didn't have to
They'd shun him through the day but at night they'd bow
From the northeast Arkansas Mississippi County bootlegger
[ dobro ] He was ma daddy and he raised me
The northeast Arkansas Mississippi County bootlegger

My mama used to take me down to the crossroad church on Sunday
The deacons and the ladies would talk about us and how we got our money
But that didn't stop them
When they decided they wanted a brand new sanctuary
They came to see mama
And the house of God was paid for
By the northeast Arkansas Mississippi County bootlegger

Now a man can only do the best he can by those he loves
And maybe the livin' he made for us some others were jealous of
The law of the land said he couldn't do it
But there's also the law of supply and demand
If it hadn't been him
It might have been someone who wasn't as honest
As the northeast Arkansas Mississippi County bootlegger

Yeah he was a good man when he died I cried
For the northeast Arkansas Mississippi County bootlegger

SIX STRING GUITAR

(Kenny Price) « © '70 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Six strings on this old guitar I broke one now there's five
But five's enough to play my love song and try to win her back
Cause the nights're cold and lonely since she's gone

She heard that guitar picker named Atkins play our favorite song
And ever since she's heard him play everything I do is wrong

Sittin' out here underneath her window barren down with all of my might
Things just gettin' sore just pickin' that guitar
But I gotta pick loud cause she slammed the window down tight

She heard that guitar picker named Atkins...

Five strings on this old guitar I broke another now there's only four
If I can just hang on to this four string guitar
I can fix things up tonight like they were before

She heard that guitar picker named Atkins...

I've heard tell of a four string guitar two more just broke I got two to go
But I'm gonna pick the fire out of this two string guitar
Keeping my baby is my one desire
For sale this beat up guitar only got one string to play our song
And I got no one to hold and kiss me cause Chester Atkins got my baby and gone

BROWN EYED HANDSOME MAN

(Chuck Berry) « © '56 Arc Music, BMI »
Flyin' cross the desert in a TWA I saw a woman walkin' cross the sand
She'd been a walkin' thirty miles on route to LA
To get a brown eyed handsome man
Her destination was a brown eyed handsome man

Milo de Venus was a beautiful lass she had the world in the palm of her hand
She lost both her arms in a wrestlin' match
To meet a brown eyed handsome man
She fought and won herself a brown eyed handsome man

Way back in hist'ry three thousand years in fact ever since the world began
There's been a whole lot of women who sheddin' tears
For a brown eyed handsome man
It was the trouble of a brown eyed handsome man

Beautiful daughter couldn't make up her mind between a doctor and a lawyer man
Her mama told her daughter darlin' go out and find
Yourself a brown eyed handsome man
Just like your daddy was a brown eyed handsome man

Arrested on charges of unemployment sittin' in the witness stand
The Judge's wife called up the district attorney said free that brown eyed man
If you want your job you better free that brown eyed man

Way back in hist'ry three thousand years...

ALL I EVER WANTED TO DO

(Jim Owen) « © '70 Sawgrass Music, BMI »
You think you took her from me but I just gave her to you
I never wanted her much anyway all I ever wanted to do

Kiss her lips in the early morn hold her hands while the babies were born
Take care of her when she got sick get off from work and come home quick
To be at home with her every night to love her for the rest of my life
Give her anything her heart desired make sure that I never got too tired
To let her know I loved her so just let her go
I never wanted her much anyway all I ever wanted to do

Was ease her mind when she felt blue never never be untrue
I never wanted her much you can see all I ever wanted to do

Kiss her lips in the early morn...
Kiss her lips in the early morn...

DAY DIG

(Sonny Curtis - Jerry Allison) « © '70 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
There was a big time rock'n roll star that didn't know he couldn't stay big
And all the kids put him down cause he didn't have a sound that they dig
Holes appeared in the soles of his rock'n roll shoes
He got the liquid in his do's the rhythm and blues
He got down on his luck had to hang it all up and get a day gig

And just a little while back he had the number one act he did a fine show
But after just a while he went entirely out of style where did the time go
Teen idol magazine never puts him in the news
He never gets to see his name in record reviews
He did is best to get hip but refused to take a trip and let his mind blow

When the day gig bell sounds he drops down
He picks up his cards and punches them clocks
He rushes to the studio to record a demo album
Living mono rock and folk and flop
Doo-wop doo-wop

He didn't save a single set can't imagine where it went and now he's busted
But the record company cap knows exactly where it's at he can't be trusted
So all he's got to show for his million selling disc
Is the gold plated record but now he insists
That the record on the wall wasn't really gold at all because it rusted

Umbar umbar umbar who-de-di...

MY MOUNTAIN DEW

(Charlie Rich) « © '64 Charles Rich Music, BMI »
You found a new love and I found one too
Yours is an old boy friend but mine's mountain dew
Friends say you're happy and I'm happy sometimes too
You're happy with your new love and I'm happy with my mountain dew

Cause it helps me forget about you
It seems we couldn't get along for even those few short moments
That we were together oh I know

You'll never be the one for me but darling I could have loved you forever
You found a new love and I found one too
You're happy with your new love and I'm happy with my mountain dew
Cause it helps me forget about you

RIVER TOWN

(Bill Eldridge - Gary Stewart - Walter Haynes) « © '70 Forrest Hills Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
River Town River Town I can't settle down
Long as my woman's on the prow
They're peepin' out from behind shades
The lovin' how my woman's made
I've got to get her out of this River Town

She caught the eye of another man in this River Town
Cause the fever in the man made his blood run hot in this River Town
Made him crave her like so many river men have done
And I can't stand the way he looks at her that son of a gun

River Town River Town...

Makin' a livin' ain't an easy thing in this River Town
Well I'm breakin' my back and ruinin' my hands in this River Town
But I love that woman and there ain't another man gonna take her and run around
If he passes another remark at her I'll cut him down

River Town River Town...

RAINDROPS KEEP FALLIN' ON MY HEAD

(Hal David - Burt Bacharach) « © '69 Blue Seas Music, ASCAP / Casa David, ASCAP / WB Music, ASCAP »
Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
And just like a guy who's feet are too big for his bed
Nothing seems to fit
Those raindrops are fallin' on my head they keep fallin'

So I just did me some talkin' to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he got things done
Sleepin' on the job
Those raindrops are fallin' on my head they keep fallin'
But there's one thing I know the blues they send to meet me
Won't defeat me
It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin' red
Cryin's not for me cause I'm gonna never stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free nothin's worryin' me
[ steel ] It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep fallin' on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turnin'
Red cryin's not for me cause I'm never gonna stop the rain by complainin'
Because I'm free nothin's worryin' me nothin's worryin' me

SHE EVEN WOKE ME UP TO SAY GOODBYE

(Mickey Newbury - Doug Gilmore) « © '69 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
Morning's come and Lord my mind is aching yes it is
Sunshine standing quietly at my door
Just like the dawn my heart is silently breaking
With my tears it goes tumbling to the floor

Once again the whole town will be talking yes they will
And Lord I've seen the pity that's in their eyes
They could never understand it's her sorrow it's not a man
And no matter what they say we know she tried

Baby's packed her soft things and she's left me Lord she's left me
And I know she didn't mean to make me cry
It's not her heart Lord it's her mind she didn't mean to be unkind
Why she even woke me up to say goodbye

It's not her heart Lord it's her mind she didn't mean to be unkind
Why she even woke me up to say goodbye goodbye baby

TOMORROW NIGHT IN BALTIMORE

(Kenny Price) « © '70 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Her head rolls back and forth amidst the billows of her long black shiny hair
As she contemplates the ecstasy of some other love that now she wished was there
If she could only realize that the love I have would beckon her command
Instead of laughing endlessly and pushin' back advances with her hands

Every night I see her leaves a nightmare of illusions when she's gone
And it leaves a granded statue in a man with a pain that lingers on
The gaudy goodbye can't replace the girlish giggle of her sweet hello
But tonight I've made my crumbled mind up that I'll never ever let her go
[ harmonica ] Too many nights I've watched her tease by shifting all her weight from hip to hip
And with her hands brush back the falling strands that covers up her satin lips
She struts upon the stage and her fallen victims are calling out for more
But she leaves them stranded helplessly and exits to her dressing room door

Tonight I'm here to take her I've infiltrated past the guarded door
But she just hurries by me carrying all them scanty costumes that she wore
And asks a sawed off cigar smoking cat if he would open up the door
Then she told them to load the baggage because they open tomorrow night in Baltimore
And lord if I have to crawl I'm gonna be there tomorrow night in Baltimore
