The soundtrack to Honeysuckle Rose is an anomaly in the genre. It is really a collection of songs by Willie Nelson and his Family band as well as a host of friends like Jody Payne, Johnny Gimble, Amy Irving, Hank Cochran, Jeannie Seely, Kenneth Threadgill, Dyan Cannon, and Emmylou Harris, all of it set in a concert-like atmosphere and performed live in front of an audience. Now it's true that Nelson is the hero of the movie, but the movie hardly matters when it comes to the soundtrack because it stands so well as a document on its own. Cochran's performances are as inspiring as anything he ever did in his life. Nelson's readings of his own tunes like "Bloody Mary Morning," "On the Road Again," "Pick Up the Tempo," "Heaven or Hell," and others are solid, inspired, and rollicking. His versions of tunes written by Kris Kristofferson ("Loving Her Was Easier Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again"), Rodney Crowell ("Angel Eyes"), and Lee Clayton ("If You Could Touch Her at All") blow away the studio versions. And the duets with Cannon, Harris, and Irving are moving and direct. The sound is much improved on this remastered version with a real bass presence and far less crowd noise during the performances.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
(Willie Nelson)
« © '79 Full Nelson Music, BMI »
On the road again just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is making music with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again goin' places that I've never been
Seein' things that I may never see again
And I can't wait to get on the road again
On the road again like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends insisting that the world keep turning our way and our way
Is on the road again just can't wait to get on the road again...
[ guitar + harmonica ]
On the road again like a band of gypsies...
On the road again just can't wait to get on the road again...
And I can't wait to get on the road again

PICK UP THE TEMPO
(Willie Nelson)
« © '74 Full Nelson Music, BMI »
Some people are saying that time will take care of people like me
That I'm livin' too fast and they say I can't last much longer
But little they see that their thoughts of me is my Saviour
And little they know that the beat oughta go a little faster
So pick up the tempo just a little and take it on home
The singer ain't singin' and the drummer's been draggin' too long
Time'll take care of itself so just leave time alone
And pick up the tempo just a little and take it on home
Well I'm wild and I'm mean I'm creatin' a scene I'm goin' crazy
I'm good and I'm bad and I'm happy and sad and I'm lazy
I'm quiet and I'm loud and I'm gatehrin' a crowd and I like gravy
About half off the wall but I learned it all in the Navy
So pick up the tempo...
Take it on home

HEAVEN OR HELL
(Willie Nelson)
« © '74 Full Nelson Music, BMI »
Sometimes it's heaven and sometimes it's hell sometimes I don't even know
Sometimes I take it as far as I can sometimes I don't even go
My front tracks're headed for a cold water well my back tracks're covered with snow
Sometimes it's heaven sometimes it's hell and sometimes I don't even know
[ guitar - harmonica ]
Heaven ain't walkin' on a street paved with gold hell ain't a mountain of fire
Heaven is layin' in my sweet baby's arms and hell is when baby ain't there
My front tracks're headed...

BLUE EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN
(Fred Rose)
« © '45 Milene Music, ASCAP »
In the twilight glow I see her blue eyes crying in the rain
And when we kissed goodbye and parted I knew we'd never meet again
Love is like a dying ember only memories remain
Through the ages I'll remember blue eyes crying in the rain
[ guitar ]
Some day when we meet up yonder we'll stroll hand in hand again
In a land that knows no parting blue eyes crying in the rain

(Merle Haggard)
« © '69 Tree Publishing, BMI »
[ Jody Payne ]
It's a big job just gettin' by with nine kids and a wife
But I've been a workin' man dang near all of my life
And I'll keep on workin' long as my two hands are fit to use
I'll drink a little beer in a tavern and sing a little bit of these workin' man blues
Sometimes I think about leavin' do a little bummin' around
I wanna throw my bills out the window catch a train to another town
I go back workin' I gotta buy my kids a brand new pair of shoes
I'll get a little bit stoned this weekend and cry a little bit of these workin' man blues
[ harmonica - piano - guitar ]
I said hey hey workin' man workin' man like me
I ain't never been on welfare and that's one place I won't be
I'll be back workin' as long as my two hands are fit to use
I'll get a little bit stoned this weekend and sing a little bit of these workin' man blues

BLOODY MARY MORNING
(Willie Nelson)
« © '69 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Well it's a Bloody Mary morning
Baby left me without warnin' sometime in the night
So I'm flyin' down to Houston forgettin' her the nature of my flight
As we taxi down the runway the smog and haze remindin' me of how I feel
Just a country boy who's learnin' that the pitfalls of the city are extremely real
All the night life and the parties temptation and deceit the order of the day
And it's a Bloody Mary morning cause I'm leavin' baby somewhere in LA
Well it's a Bloody Mary morning...
[ instrumental part ]
Our golden jet is airborn flight fifty cuts a path across the mornin' sky
And a voice comes on the speaker reassuring us flight fifty is the way to fly
A hostess takes our order coffee tea or something stronger to start off the day
And it's a Bloody Mary morning cause I'm leavin' baby somewhere in LA
Well it's a Bloody Mary morning...
So I'm flyin' down to Houston forgettin' her the nature of my flight

LOVING YOU IS EASIER
(Kris Kristofferson)
« © '70 Combine Music, BMI »
[ duet with Dyan Cannon]
I have seen the morning burning golden on the mountain in the skies
Aching with the feeling of the freedom of an eagle as she flies
Turning on the world the way you smiled upon my soul as I lay dying
And healing as the colors in the sunshine and the shadows of your eyes
Waking in the morning to the feeling of your fingers on my skin
Wiping out the traces of the people and the places that I've been
Teaching me that yesterday was something that I never thought of trying
Talking of tomorrow and the money love and time we have to spend
Loving you is easier than anything I'll ever do again
Coming close together with a feeling that I've never known before in my time
You ain't ashamed to be a woman you know just gotta be a friend
I don't know the answers to the easy way you opened every door in my mind
Dreaming is as easy as believing it's never gonna end
Loving you is easier than anything I'll ever do again
Loving you is easier than anything I'll ever do again

IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THAT WAY
(Willie Nelson)
« © '74 Full Nelson Music, BMI »
It's not supposed to be that way you're supposed to know I love you
But it don't matter anyway if I can't be there to console you
And like the other little children you're gonna dream a dream or two
But be careful what you're dreamin' or soon your dreams'll be dreamin' you
It's not supposed to be that way you're supposed to know I love you
But it don't matter anyway if I can't be there to controle you
[ guitar ]
When you go out to play this evenin' play with fire flies till they're gone
And then you rush to meet your lover and play with real fire till the dawn
It's not supposed to be that way you're supposed to know I love you
But it don't matter anyway if I can't be there to console you

YOU SHOW ME YOURS AND I'LL SHOW YOU MINE
(Kris Kristofferson)
« © '76 Resaca Music, BMI »
If you're feeling salty I'm your tequila
If you've got the freedom well I've got the time
There ain't nothin' sweeter than naked emotions
So you show me yours fun and I'll show you mine
No ma'am I know this ain't all that you've ever been used to
You with your rings of your fingers and time on your hands
Sometimes it's nice to have somebody nice to be close to
God knows I've been there before you and I understand
If you're feeling salty...
[ guitar ]
I wish that I were the answer to all of your questions
Lord knows I know you wish you were the answer to mine
So darlin' if you ain't got a thing but a change of direction
Lord knows I know you'll be something I'm lucky to find
If you're feeling salty...
If you show me yours fun and I'll show you mine

IF YOU COULD TOUCH HER AT ALL
(Lee Clayton)
« © '74 Resaca Music, BMI »
Funny a woman can come on so wild and free
Yet insist I don't watch her undress or watch her watch me
And stand by my bed and shiver as if she were cold
Just to lie down beside me and touch me as if I were gold
One night of love can't make up for six nights alone
But I'd rather have one than none Lord cause I'm flesh and bone
And sometimes it seems that she ain't worth the trouble at all
But she could be worth the world if somehow you can touch her at all
Right or wrong a woman can own any man
She can take him inside her and hold his soul in her hand
Then leave him as weak and weary as a newborn child
Fighting to get his first breath and open his eyes
One night of love can't make up...
[ guitar ]
And sometimes it seems...

ANGEL FLYING TOO CLOSE TO THE GROUND
(Willie Nelson)
« © '79 Full Nelson Music, BMI »
You had not've fallen then I would not've found you
Angel flying too close to the ground
And I patched up your broken wing and hung around awhile
Trying to keep your spirits up and your fever down
I knew someday that you would fly away for love's the greatest healer to be found
So leave me if you need to I will still remember angel flying too close to the ground
[ guitar ]
Fly on fly on past the speed of sound I'd rather see you up than see you down
So leave me if you need to I will still remember angel flying too close to the ground
So leave me if you need to I will still remember angel flying too close to the ground

I GUESS I'VE COME TO LIVE HERE IN YOUR EYES
(Willie Nelson)
« © '80 Full Nelson Music, BMI »
I guess I've come to live here in your eyes
This must be the place called Paradise
You are so special to me what a special time within our lives
So I guess I've come to live here in your eyes
Thousand times I see you a thousand times you take my breath away
Tears of doubt consume me afraid someone will take it all away
I hope I'm here forever and I think it's time we both realize
But I guess I've come to live here in your eyes
Thousand times I see you...
I guess I've come to live here in your eyes

ANGEL EYES
(Rodney Crowell)
« © '80 Coolwell Music, ASCAP / Granite Music, ASCAP »
[ duet with Emmylou Harris ]
Angel eyes angel eyes
The ways of the world are feeble don't give up on simple people
Angle eyes stun those nights
The blues you can live wthout it's not what you song's about
Angel eyes angel eyes
Tell me what would we're doin' without the light from angel eyes
You can move the hearts of men
Just with a phrase you're turning since hearts ever have been yearning
Bear with us bear so alone
Thin lines you've been living on are so close to the danger zone
Angel eyes angel eyes
Tell me what would we're doin' without the light from angel eyes

SO YOU THINK YOU'RE A COWBOY
(Hank Cochran - Willie Nelson)
« © '79 Tree Publishing, BMI »
[ Emmylou Harris ]
So you think you're a cowboy but you're only a kid
With a mind to do everything wrong
And it starts to get smoother when the circle begins
But by the time that you get there it's gone
So you think you're a winner but you're losing again
The cards are all lucky but then
And the hand that you're holding means nothing at all
Just knowing is all that is there
So you think you're a cowboy...
[ guitar ]
So your life is a fun the best that you can tomorrow is not right or wrong
And don't wait for tomorrow to bring you your dreams
Cause by the time that they get there they're gone
So you think you're a cowboy...
Yeah but by the time that you get there it's gone

MAKE THE WORLD GO AWAY
(Hank Cochran)
« © '63 Tree Publishing, BMI »
[ Hank Cochran ]
Make the world go away and get it off my shoulder
Say the things you used to say and make the world go away
Do you remember when you loved me before the world took me astray
If you do then forgive me and make the world make it go away
Make the world go away...
[ sax ]
I'm sorry if I'll hurt you I'll make it up day by day
Just say you love me like you used to and make the world go away
Make the world go away...
Say the things you used to say and make the world go away

TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY
(Willie Nelson)
« © '80 Full Nelson Music, BMI »
[ Dyan Cannon ]
There must be two sides to every story
And whose to say whose right and who is wrong
And I'm tryin' to understand why you're not with me
How can we both be right when you're still gone
It's hard to believe that it's all over a love like ours is not supposed to die
And there must be two sides to every story
I just wish I had a chance to tell you mine
I miss you more than I could ever tell you
And we've hurt each other more than we could know
And there must be two sides to every story
Come on home and tell me yours I love you so
[ guitar ]
I miss you more...
Come on home and tell me yours I love you so

SONG FOR YOU
(Leon Russell)
« © '73 Irving Music, BMI »
Well I've been a lot of places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs and I've made some bad rhyme
I've acted out my love in stages with ten thousand people watchin'
Now we're alone and I am singin' my song for you
And I know your image of me is what I hope to be
I've treated you unkindly but darling can't you see
No one more important to me darling can't you please see through me
Cause now we're alone and I am singing my song for you
Well you taught me precious secrets of a truth with holding nothin'
You came out in front but I was hiding
Now I'm so much better and if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody cause my love is in there hiding
And I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing my song for you
And we were alone and I was singing my song for you

(Joshua K. Alwood - Roebuck Staples)
« © '52 Martin And Morris Music, BMI / Full Nelson Music, BMI »
Oh they tell me of a place where my friends have gone
Oh they tell me of a home far away
Oh they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise
Oh they tell me of an uncloudy day
Oh the land of cloudless day oh the land of an uncloudy sky
Oh they tell me of a place where my friends have gone
Oh they tell me of an uncloudy day
