Reprise Records may have been surprised at the commercial success of Dean Martin's album of country-oriented songs, Country Style, which spent four weeks in the Billboard LP chart in the spring of 1963, and the label lost no time sending Martin back to the recording studio to cut a follow-up. This time, Marty Paich was handling the charts and the baton, but the approach was much the same. Martin took on songs associated with Hank Williams, George Morgan, Eddy Arnold, and others. The songs may have been Nashville products technically, but Paich got no closer to real country music than the countrypolitan style; he still managed to fill up his sound with a typical orchestra and backup singers, not steel guitars or country fiddles, even if there was a twangy electric guitar solo on "Corrine Corrina." This was country music by way of Hollywood. But that suited Martin, who sounded as at ease as ever. If there was any criticism to be made of his approach, it was that he brought little sense of emotional turmoil to some of the romantic laments here. Songs like "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love With You)" and "Take Good Care of Her" were full of the unvarnished heartbreak typical of country expression, but Martin didn't sound as put out as the lyrics would have indicated. Maybe that was one reason why country radio ignored this album and its predecessor.

I'M GONNA CHANGE EVERYTHING
(Alex Zanetis)
« © '62 Tree Publishing, BMI »
(Yeah I'm gonna change everything that holds a mem'ry of you oh yeah)
I'm gonna start with the hall take the pictures off the wall and burn 'em
Move the chairs around take the window curtains down and burn 'em
Everything I see reminds me you were here
Yeah I'm gonna change everything that holds a mem'ry of you (oh yeah)
The candle of your set you gave me on the night of my birthday
The records that you bought the hi-fi we loved to play
The decoratin' man will come and rearrange them
Yeah I'm gonna change everything that holds a mem'ry of you oh yeah
[ strings ]
Everything I see reminds me you were here
Yeah I'm gonna change everything that holds a mem'ry of you (oh yeah)
Take the carpet off the floor throw it out the door it's filled with tears
Everything I find that brings you to my mind must disappear
Every night I dream I'll dream of someone new
Yeah I'm gonna change everything that holds a mem'ry of you
Yeah I'm gonna change everything that holds a mem'ry of you (oh yeah)

CANDY KISSES
(George Morgan)
« © '48 Unichappell Music, BMI »
(Candy kisses wrapped in paper)
Candy kisses wrapped in paper mean more to you than any of mine
Candy kisses wrapped in paper you'd rather have 'em any old time
You don't mean it when you whisper those sweet love words in my ear
Candy kisses wrapped in paper mean more to you than mine do dear
(Oh candy kisses wrapped in paper mean more to you than any of mine
Candy kisses wrapped in paper)
Once my heart was filled with gladness now there's sadness only tears
Candy kisses wrapped in paper mean more to you than mine do dear
Mean more to you than mine do dear
(Candy kisses)

ROCKIN' ALONE IN AN OLD ROCKIN' CHAIR
(Bob Miller)
« © '32 MCA Music, ASCAP »
(Rockin' alone in an old rockin' chair)
Sittin' alone in an old rockin' chair
I saw an old mother with silvery hair
She seemed so neglected by those who should care
Rockin' alone in an old rockin' chair
(Rockin' alone in an old rockin' chair)
Her hands were caloused and wrinckled and old
A life of hard work was the story they told
And I've thought of angels as I saw her there
Rockin' alone in an old rockin' chair
[ strings ]
(Rockin' alone in an old rockin' chair)
Bless her old heart do you think she'd complain
Though life has been bitter she'd live it again
And carry the cross that is more than her share
Rockin' alone in an old rockin' chair
Rockin' alone in an old rockin' chair

Put your arms around me then I'll be your slave
Cause just a little lovin' will go a long way
(A little lovin' go a long way
Make me happy the rest of my days
Arms around me be your slave
A little lovin' go a long way)
(Just a little lovin') will go a long way

I CAN'T HELP IT (IF I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU)
(Hank Williams)
« © '51 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
(I can't help it if I'm still in love with you)
Today I passed you on the street and my heart fell at your feet
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
Somebody else stood by your side and he looked so satisfied
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
A picture from the past came slowly stealing
As I brushed your arm and walked so close to you
Then suddenly I got that old time feeling
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
[ strings ]
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
(It's hard to know another's lips will kiss you
And hold you just the way I used to do)
Oh heaven only knows how much I miss you
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you

TAKE GOOD CARE OF HER
(Arthur Kent - Ed Warren)
« © '61 Music Sales, ASCAP »
I supposed I ought to say congratulations
For you've won the only girl I've ever loved
But I've hurt too much to face the situation
Just take good care of her take good care of her
Just to be around her was my greatest pleasure
She was everything my future held in store
So remember when you take my only treasure
Please take good care of her take good care of her
I must accepted she loves you more than me
So with my broken heart I'll bow out gracefuly
Please don't send me any wedding invitation
For I couldn't bear to see her there with you
If she's happy that'll be my consolation
So take good care of her take good care of her
[ strings ]
Please don't send me any wedding invitation...

MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IS MY CRYIN' TIME
(Sheb Wooley)
« © '63 Channel Music, ASCAP »
When you said goodbye I made up a lie told every one that I knew
Our love was not real so I played a field and that I never loved you
I put up a front and walked down the street foragin' a smile at the time
And nobody knows I'm missin' you so it's drivin' me out of my mind
The middle of the night is when I cry
The middle of the day is when I lie
Tell everyone that I'm doing fine
But the middle of the night is my cryin' time
[ strings ]
All of our friends ask where I've been they haven't seen me around
I just give a wink and I'm hopin' they think I've been out paintin' the town
Sometimes it seems alone in my dreams I'm holdin' you once again
When I awake it's so hard to take and that's when the teardrops begin
Oh the middle of the night is when I cry...
[ strings ]
I put up a front and walked down the street...
The middle of the nigh is my cryin' time
The middle of the day is my lyin' time
I tell everyone that I'm doing fine
But the middle of the night is my cryin' time
(The middle of the nigh is his cryin' time)
The middle of the nigh is my cryin' time
The middle of the nigh is my cryin' time

FROM LOVER TO LOSER
(Arthur Kent - Ed Warren)
« © '63 Bourne Co, ASCAP »
(From lovers to losers from lovers to losers)
From lovers to losers that's me that's me
For your lips aren't willing like they used to be
You once were so hungry for my embrace
Now goodbye is written all over your face
I'm fallin' from heaven for I know we're gonna part
The fall may not kill me but it's bound to break my heart
Yes lovers to losers you made that clear
I walked in a laughing but I'm leaving with tears
[ strings ]
I'm fallin' from heaven...

BOUQUET OF ROSES
(Steve Nelson - Bob Hillard)
« © '47 Anne Rachel Music, ASCAP / Better Half Music, ASCAP »
(Oh I'm sending you a big bouquet of roses)
I'm sending you a big bouquet of roses one for every time you've broke my heart
And as the door of love between us closes tears will fall like petals when we part
I've begged you to be different but you'll always be untrue
I'm tired of forgivin' now there's nothin' left to do
So I'm sending you a big bouquet of roses
One for every time you've broke my heart
[ strings ]
(I'm sending you a big bouquet of roses)
I know that I should hate you after all you've put me through
But how can I be bitter when I'm still in love with you
So I'm sending you a big bouquet of roses
One for every time you've broke my heart
One for every time you've broke my heart

SECOND HAND ROSE (SECOND HAND HEART)
(Harlan Howard - Grant Clarke - James Hanley)
« © '63 Tree Publishing, BMI / Quartet Music, ASCAP /
Range Road Music, ASCAP / Sony Tunes, ASCAP »
Second hand shoes second hand clothes they all call her second hand rose
They all think they're pretty smart but rose don't have a second hand heart
I love a little girl who lives across the way
I go to see her nearly every day
But when I get the money I'll take her away
And they can't gather around her and say
(Second hand shoes second hand clothes) they all call her second hand rose
They all think they're pretty smart but rose don't have a second hand heart
[ strings ]
They tease her about her clothes and things
It's hard to believe some folks could be so mean
But when I get the money I'll buy her the best
I'll take a rose you can have all the rest
(Second hand shoes...
(Second hand shoes...
(My sweet rose)
