In November 1974, Dean Martin, as usual, made his annual two-day visit to a recording studio to cut an album for Reprise Records. In recent years, Martin and his producer, Jimmy Bowen, had veered from the country-pop style with which they had succeeded in the mid-'60s, returning now and then to the traditional pop Martin had sung and recorded before the breakout success of "Everybody Loves Somebody" in 1964. At the 1974 sessions, they stuck with country-pop arrangements, but the songs were all traditional pop standards. In fact, all but one were songs associated with Martin's main influence, Bing Crosby, among them big Crosby hits like "Love Thy Neighbor" and "Only Forever." The only song Crosby had not recorded first was "It's Magic," a 1948 Sammy Cahn/Jule Styne composition introduced by Doris Day in the film Romance on the High Seas, and a big hit for her. Bowen's versions of the songs often didn't sound much like Crosby or Day, however. For example, "If I Had You" was given something of a light disco treatment. Martin had no trouble negotiating such arrangements, though, and his familiarity with the songs themselves made his interpretations more comfortable than ever. So far, so good. But Reprise, perhaps stung by the sales decline of Martin's recent recordings, didn't bother to release the album at the time. It finally turned up in stores four years later, by which time Martin was nearly forgotten as a record-maker.

TWILIGHT ON THE TRAIL
(Sidney D. Mitchell - Louis Alter)
« © '36 Famous Music, ASCAP »

When it's twilight on the trail
And I jump along the world is like a dream
And the wripple of the stream is my song

When it's twilight on the trail
And I rest once more my ceiling is the sky
And the grass on which I lie is my floor

Never ever have a nickel in my jeans
Never ever have a debt to pay
Still I understand what real contentment means
Guess I was born born that way
When it's twilight on the trail
And my voice is still please plant this heart of mine
Underneath that lonesome pine on the hill

Never ever have a nickel in my jeans...

LOVE THY NEIGHBOR
(Mack Gordon - Harry Revel)
« © '60 Chappell & Co, ASCAP / WB Music, ASCAP »

Love thy neighbor walk up and say how be ye
Gee but I'm glad to see ye pal how's tricks what's new
Oh love thy neighbor offer to share her burden
Tell her to say the word'n you'll see her through

Now especially if there should be a beautiful girl next door
Now you say to that girl next door
Don't think I'm bold but my mama told me
To love thy neighbor and you will find your labor
A great deal easier life will be breezier if you love thy neighbor

Oh love thy neighbor walk up and say how be ye...
Now especially if there should be...

WITHOUT A WORD OF WARNING
(Mack Gordon - Harry Revel)
« © '35 Chappell & Co, ASCAP / WB Music, ASCAP »

Without a word of warning my life has begun
Without a word of warning two hearts beat as one
From out of nowhere you came to me
A breeze passed by whispering your name to me

And without a word of warning strange as it seems
We kissed and with that kiss you invaded my dreams
I don't know how it ever happened out of the blue up above
You came along to answer my song of love
[ strings ]
I don't know how it ever happened out of the blue up above
You came along to answer my song of love

Goodbye forever old fellows and gals
Goodbye forever old sweethearts and pals
God Bless them
Gee but I'd give the world to see that old old gang of mine

(Gee but I'd give the world to see that old gang of mine)
I can't forget that old quartet that sang Sweet Adeline

Goodbye forever old fellows and gals...

IF I HAD YOU
(Ted Shapiro - Jimmy Campbell - Red Connelly)
« © '57 Campbell-Connelly Inc, ASCAP / Robbins Catalog, ASCAP »

I could show the world how to smile I could be glad all of the while
I could change the gray skies to blue if I had you
I could leave the old days behind leave all my friends I'd never mind
I could start my life all anew if I had you

I could climb the snow-capped mountain sail the mighty ocean wide
I could cross the burning desert if I had you by my side
I could be a king dear on a crown humble or poor rich or renowned
There's nothing I could not do if I had you
[ flute ]
I could climb the snow-capped mountain...

IT'S MAGIC
(Sammy Cahn - Jule Styne)
« © '48 WB Music, ASCAP »

Why do I tell me myself these things that happen are all really true
When in my heart I know the magic is my love for you

You sigh the song begins you speak and I hear violins it's magic
The stars desert the skies and rush to nestle in your eyes it's magic
Without a golden wand or mystic charms
Fantastic things begin when I am in your arms

When we walk hand-in-hand the world becomes a wonderland it's magic
How else can I explain those rainbows when there ain't no rain it's magic
Why do I tell me myself these things that happen are all really true
When in my heart I know the magic is my love for you

I CRIED FOR YOU
(Arthur Freed - Gus Arnheim - Abe Lyman)
« © '23 Miller Catalog, ASCAP »

I cried for you now it's your turn to cry over me
Every road has a turning that's one thing you're learning

I cried for you oh what a fool I used to be
Now I found two eyes just a little bit bluer
And I found a heart just a little bit truer
I cried for you now it's your turn to cry over me
[ piano ]
(I cried for you) what a fool I used to be
Now I found two eyes just a little bit bluer
And I found a heart oh just a little bit truer
I cried for you now it's your turn to cry over me

ONLY FOREVER
(Johnny Burke - James V. Monaco)
« © '57 Anne Rachel Music, ASCAP »

Do I want to be with you as the years come and go
Only forever if you care to know
Would I grant all your wishes and be proud of the task
Only forever if someone should ask

How long would it take me to be near if you beckoned
Off hand I would figure less than a second
Do you think I'll remember how you look when you smile
Only forever and that's putting it mild
[ strings ]
How long would it take me...

ONCE IN A WHILE
(Bud Green - Michael Edwards)
« © '57 Miller Catalog, ASCAP »

Once in a while will you try to give one little thought of me
Though someone else may be nearer your heart
Once in a while will you dream of the moments I shared with you
Moments before we two drifted apart

In love's smoldering ember one spark may remain
And if love still can remember the spark may burst again
I know that I'll be contented with with yesterday's memories
Knowing'll you think of me once in a while

And if love still can remember...
