In 1962, Capitol Records, Dean Martin's former record label, and Reprise Records, his new one, were engaged in battle as the former issued his final recordings for it and the latter put out just-recorded material. (The skirmish was a sideshow to the larger war between the two companies over Frank Sinatra, who had founded Reprise even before completing his Capitol contract.) In the LP racks, Capitol struck first with Dino! Italian Love Songs in February, and the album became the singer's first to figure in the best-seller charts. Reprise followed with French Style in April. Cha-Cha De Amor, the last album Martin recorded for Capitol, appeared in early November, and three weeks later Reprise responded with Dino Latino. The two labels seemed intent on emphasizing Martin's international appeal with these releases, and having gone to Italy and France, musically speaking, already, Martin had little trouble extending his tour to the Spanish-speaking countries here. Arranger/conductor Don Costa came up with five string arrangements and five brass ones, varying the album's tones from the playful "In a Little Spanish Town," with its lively Don Fagerquist trumpet solo, to the lush charms of "What a Diff'rence a Day Made." Martin sang convincingly in Spanish here and there, never seeming to work hard for his effects. The glut of releases from the two labels doesn't seem to have hurt his sales as it did Sinatra's; Dino Latino became his first Reprise album to reach the charts.

EL RANCHO GRANDE
(Bartley Costello - Emilio Uranga - Silvano Ramos)
« © '56 Peer International, BMI »
I love to roam out yonder out where the buffalo wander
Free as the eagle flyin' I'm ropin' and a tyin' I'm ropin' and a tyin'
Give me my ranch and my cattle far from the greed city's rattle
Give me a big herd to battle for I just love a lightin' the cattle
I love to roam out yonder...
Give me my bridle and saddle and my old pinto I'll straddle
I'll get the cowboys a ridin' out where the rustlers are hidin'
I love to roam out yonder...
Sometimes the winter storms tearin' set all the cattle a rearin'
But when the winter is over we're sure enough in the clover
Alla en la rancho grande alla donde vivia
Habia una ranche rita que alegre me decia que alegra me decia

MANANA (IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME)
(Dave Barbour - Peggy Lee)
« © '62 Criterion Music, ASCAP »
The faucet it is dripping and the fence is falling down
My pocket needs some money so I can't go into town
My brother he ain't working and my sister doesn't care
The car it needs a motor so I can't go anywhere
Manana manana manana is soon enough for me
Once I had some money but I gave it to a friend
He said he'd pay me double he was only for a lend
But he said a little later that the horse it was so slow
Why he gave the horse my money is something I don't know
Manana manana manana is soon enough for me
My brother took his suitcase and he went away to school
My father said he only learned to be a silly fool
My father said that I should learn to make a chili pot
But then I burned the house down the chili was too hot
Manana manana manana is soon enough for me
The window it is busted and the rain is coming in
If someone doesn't fix it I'll be soaking to my skin
But if we wait a day or two the rain may go away
And we don't need a window on such a lovely day
Manana manana manana is soon enough for me
Manana manana manana is soon enough for me

Tangerine she is all they claim
With her eyes of night and lips as bright as flame
Tangerine when she dances by senoritas stare and cabolleros sigh
And I've seen toasts to Tangerine
Raised in every bar across the Argentine
Yes she has them all on the run but her heart belongs to just one
Her heart belongs to Tangerine
[ horns ]
Yes she has them all on the run...
Tangerine Tangerine Tangerine Tangerine

SOUTH OF THE BORDER
(Michael Carr - Jimmy Kennedy)
« © '39 Colgems Music, ASCAP / Shapiro-Bernstein Co, ASCAP »
South of the border down Mexico way
That's where I fell in love when stars above came out to play
And now as I wander my thoughts ever stray
South of the border down Mexico way
Ah she was a picture in old Spanish lace
Just for a tender while I kissed the smile upon her face
It was fiesta we were so gay
South of the border down Mexico way
Then she sighed as she whispered manana
Never dreamed that we were parting
And I lied as I whispered manana
For I tomorrow never came
South of the border I jumped backed one day
There in a veil of white by the candle light knelt to pray
Ah the mission bells told me that I must not stay
South of the border down Mexico way
Ai ai ai ai ai ai ai ai ai ai ai ai ai ai ai ai

IN A LITTLE SPANISH TOWN
(Mabel Wayne - Sam M. Lewis - Joe Young)
« © '59 Feist Catalog, ASCAP / Warock Corp, ASCAP »
In a little Spanish town it was on a night like this
Stars were peek-a-booing down it was on a night like this
I whispered be true to me and she sighed si si si
Man the skies have turned to gray because we're far apart
Many moons have passed away and still she's in my heart
We made a promise and sealed it with a kiss
Ah in a little Spanish town it was on a night like this
[ horns ]
I whispered be true to me and she sighed oh si si si
Man the skies have turned to gray...
In a little Spanish town it was on a night like this
In a little Spanish town it was on a night like this

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MADE
(Stanley Adams - Marie Grever)
« © '34 Stanley Adams Music, ASCAP / Zomba Golden Sands Ent, ASCAP »
What a difference a day made twenty four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers where there used to be rain
My yesterday was blue dear today I'm part of you dear
My lonely nights are through dear since you said you were mine
What a difference a day makes there's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy since that moment of bliss that thrilling kiss
It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a difference a day made and the difference is you

(Maria Grever - Charles Pasquale)

Magic is the moonlight on this lover's June night
As I see the moonlight shining in your eyes
And this is the power in this moonlit hour
Love begin to flower this is paradise
Living in the splendor of your kiss so tender
Make my heart surrender to your love divine
Magic is the moonlight more than any June night
Magic is the moonlight for it made you mine

ALWAYS IN MY HEART
(Kim Gannon - Ernesto Lecuona)
« © '62 Southern Music, ASCAP »
You are always in my heart even though you're far away
I can hear the music of the song of love I sang to you
You are always in my heart and when skies above are gray
I remember that you care and then and there the sun breaks through
Just before I go to sleep there's a rendezvous I keep
And the dreams I always meet help me forget we're far apart
I don't know exactly when dear but I'm sure we'll meet again dear
And my darling till we do you are always in my heart
[ strings ]
And the dreams I always meet...

BESAME MUCHO (KISS ME MUCH)
(Sunny Skylar - Consuelo Velasquez)
« © '60 Peer International, BMI »
Besame besame mucho
Each time I cling to you a kiss I hear music divine
Besame besame mucho
Hold me my darling and say that you'll always be mine
This joy is something new my arms enfolding you
Never knew this thrill before
Whoever thought I'd be holding you close to me
Whispering it's you I adore
Dearest one if you should leave me
Each little dream would take wings and my life would be through
Besame besame mucho
Love me forever and make all my dreams come true
Besame besame mucho
Love me forever and make all my dreams come true

LA PALOMA
(Sebastian Yradier)
« © '56 Songs Of Universal, BMI »
When I left Havana nobody saw me go
But my little gaucho maid who loves me so
She came down the pathway following after me
That same little gaucho maid that I longed to see
If at your window you see a gentle dove
Treat it with care and welcome it there with love
It may be so I do not deny its glee
Crown it with flowers grant love its hours for me
Oh my darling be mine won't you say that you love me
All my passions so tender oh please surrender your love divine
Oh my darling be mine...
[ strings ]
Oh my darling be mine...
