John D. Loudermilk
SING AND WRITE HITS ? EASY ! ALL IT TAKES IS TALENT !
Right now I'm wondering if I did the right thing in asking to do the story that's to be printed on John D. Loudermilk's new album. Certainly I'm no writer. And the truth of the matter is that my responsibility ended the minute we finished recording the last of the twelve songs, played them back, agreed among us that several good days' work had been gone, snapped off the lights and trooped off toward home.
But this is the case where you feel some things are crying to be said about somebody, even though you aren't sure you're capable of putting them into words. What I mean is, Loudermilk is a combination of more different moods, expressions and varieties of admirable talent than anybody you or I have met in a good long while.
John D., first of all, is a composer; but I guess you already knew that. Sue Thompson and George Hamilton IV know it, that's for sure, because Sue's Sad Movies and Norman and George's A Rose And A Baby Ruth were all products of one or another of John's frames of mind.
In a way, knowing him reminds me of the time we had an entertainment program at high school back home, and a magician did a stunt where he disappeared behind a screen for three seconds and popped out on the other side in an entirely different costume... only John does it without ever taking off the little hat that's his trade-mark... his in an inward change of mood.
As you'll hear in this new collection of Loudermilk songs, he's mischievous, he's devoted, he's adventurous, he's humorous, he's all the things we've pictured him to be. But, most of all, he's like the mood in which he sings All Of This For Sally - he's surprising !
I've never tried my hand at predicting on any subject - the weather or the elections or who will win the National League pennant. But there is one prediction I wouldn't hesitate a second to put down on paper and sign my name to: that John D. Loudermilk, composing and singing, will be a long-time influence for good in the world of music.
So, that's just what I'll do - sign my name, I mean - and let you go back to enjoying this many-sided music man.

ALL OF THIS FOR SALLY
(John D. Loudermilk)
« © '62 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

Great granddaddy left five million dollars for Sally
Twelve twenty story office buildings in New York to Sally
Sixty thousand acres of a prime beef cattle in Utah
A thirty room mansion with the servants and a chauffer with a new car
All of this for Sally all of this for Sally all of this for Sally who loves only me
When the lawyers read the will and gave everything to Sally
All the great grand kids looked disgustedly at Sally
It was quite a shock when he left his blue chip stocks to Sally
And it was terrible when he left his Riviera home to Sally
All of this for Sally all of this for Sally all of this for Sally who loves only me
I take Sally for a walk each evening in the city park
She looks up at me with those big brown eyes and breaks my silly heart
Sally's not too good at 'rithmetic so all her money I kinda handle
Cause after all Sally's just a four year old uhm brown eyed Cocker Spaniel
All of this for Sally all of this for Sally all of this for Sally who loves only me

Somebody stalled the judge's ragged old gown Big Daddy's Alabamy bound

Well highway patrol and the FBI is out a huntin' this criminal
They got their hound dogs sniffin' the ground Big Daddy's Alabamy bound

BULLY OF THE BEACH
(John D. Loudermilk)
« © '62 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

Now a great big bully kicked sand in my baby's face last summer at the beach uhhuh
My baby egged me on until he stomped a hole in me uhhuh
When I woke up somebody told me she had left with him arm in arm
So I went home and I ordered me a book on how to get to be big and strong
Now I'm doing 25 pushups 25 situps dumb bells bar bells boy I'll teach
The wooly wooly bully of the beach
Cause he is the bully of the beach beach beach
He is the bully of the beach beach beach
I'm gonna study up and then I'll teach the wooly wooly bully of the beach

Now I gained 20 pounds and felt like a bull so I went down to the beach
Well I saw them together so I went right up was gonna slap him off his feet
Oh I hit him with everything that I had but he didn't even move
How was I to know that he'd been readin' up one muscle building too
(And the nurse told me this morning before they set the bones that he does)
Five hundred pushups five hundred setups dumb bells bar bells what a freak
The wooly wooly bully of the beach
Cause he is the bully of the beach beach beach
He is the bully of the beach beach beach
But they say I'll be healed in about a week
And then I'm going back down to see the bully of the beach

HE'S JUST A SCIENTIST (THAT'S ALL)
(John D. Loudermilk)
« © '61 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

He don't play football golf or guitar he's never been on Sullivan Clark or Paar
He's just not important cause he ain't a star he's just a scientist
Oh oh just a scientist yeah yeah just a scientist uhhuh just a scientist that's all
Now all the games are won by big and brawny halfbacks
And marshals find the rustlers by their horse's tracks
But who is gonna get us to the moon and back
He'll be a scientist hey hey just a scientist oh yeah just a scientist
Just a scientist that's all
Everybody's flippin' over Fabian or Frankie Avalon
But nobody ever seems to give a flip over Dr Werner Von Braun
Cause he's just a scientist yeah yes a scientist
Just a scientist just a scientist that's all
Now all that we remember is that Cadillac that knocked us out and made us gawk
We done forgot about the polio shot invented by Dr Salk
Cause he's just a scientist oh yeah he's just a scientist
Yeah yeah just a scientist just a scientist that's all

« © '61 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

Have you ever been driving down the road
And come up on a fella who was just poking along straddlin' the white line
And when you try to pass him he'd speed up
Ha ha well around here we call this falla a Road Hog
This is a story about him and his eventual end

Well me and my buddy went a ridin' last night
Me and my buddy went a ridin' last night
We topped a hill and we saw his lights
Road Hog beep beep do do do do Road Hog beep beep do do do do
When we saw him we almost died when we saw him we almost died
He was a comin' at us on our side
Road Hog beep beep do do do do Road Hog beep beep do do do do
My buddy said that fella sure come mighty near
Probably some learner who don't know how to steer
And then I saw his lights a comin' up in my mirror
Road Hog beep beep do do do do Road Hog beep beep do do do do
He passed us a goin' bout a hundred I guess
He passed us a goin' bout a hundred I guess
And then he slowed down to twenty or less
Road Hog beep beep do do do do Road Hog beep beep do do do do
I tooted my horn and I started to pass I blinked my lights and I started to pass
And then that Road Hog stepped on the gas
Road Hog beep beep do do do do Road Hog beep beep do do do do
You'd better get him up some money for bail
You'd better get him up some money for bail
Cause tomorrow morning he will be in jail
Road Hog beep beep do do do do Road Hog beep beep do do do do
The boys will have him in the morning behind bars
The boys will have him in the morning behind bars
Cause I'm the County Sheriff in my unmarked car ha ha ha
Road Hog beep beep do do do do Road Hog beep beep do do do do

LITTLE BIRD
(John D. Loudermilk)
« © '61 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

There's a little bird that somebody send down to the earth to live on the wind
Born on the wind and he sleeps on the wind this little bird that somebody send
He's light and fragile and feathered sky blue
So thin and graceful the sun shines through
This little bird that lives on the wind this little bird that somebody send
He flys so high up in the sky out of reach of human eye
And the only time that he touches the ground is when that little bird
Is when that little bird is when that little bird dies

I was born in a lump mama died and daddy got drunk
Left me here to die or grow in the middle of Tobacco Road
Grew up in a rusty shack all I owned was a hangin' on my back
Only Lord knows how I loathe this place called Tobacco Road
But it's home the only life I've ever ever knowed
But the Lord knows I loathe Tobacco Road
[ ac.guitar ]
Gonna leave get a job with the help and the grace of God
Save my money get rich I know bring it back to Tobacco Road
Bring dynamite and a crane blow it up and start all over again
Build a town be proud to show keep the name Tobacco Road
Cause it's home the only life I've ever ever knowed
I despite you cause you're filthy but I love you cause you're home

OH HOW SAD
(John D. Loudermilk)
« © '62 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

The one you see me kiss the one you see me hug
Is really not the one that I really love
Oh oh how sad how sad to know the one you love you'll never have
The one you see me date and take out for a steak
Has never thrilled my soul and never shall
Oh oh how sad how sad to know the one you love hmm you'll never have
It's not easy easy to go go through life if you know
There's not a chance on earth to have the one that you love so
So if you see me out you'll know that I am out
To keep from thinking bout the one I love
Oh oh how sad how sad to know the one you love doo doo doo you'll never have
