Jerry Lee Lewis turned to pure country in 1968, releasing two killer albums (no pun intended) in a row with Another Place Another Time and She Still Comes Around (To Love What's Left of Me), which brought him the elusive success he so desired, so he and Smash cemented his reputation as a country crooner by releasing several albums in 1969 that were explicitly collections of covers of classic country albums. So, it wasn't until early 1970 that he unveiled a record of primarily new songs with She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye. He was riding high on his new hits — so successful that new collections of his Sun singles made it to the country Top Ten — and took that as encouragement to do whatever he damn well pleased on this new record. So, he cut pure rock & roll (a thundering cover of "Brown Eyed Handsome Man"), inserted his name in every other song (in every verse on "Since I Met You Baby," where he manages to find a place to say his full name), laughed and leered, growled and crooned, pounding and gliding down the keyboard in equal measure. These are the fieriest, loosest performances he's given since leaving Sun (not counting, of course, the then-unreleased Star Club live recording), which jolts the hardcore country of Another Place and She Still Comes Around to a different stratosphere. Those were spectacular pure country records by any measure, but this is a spectacular pure Jerry Lee country record, where he's the center of every cut, every performance, and the record is tremendously addictive for it. Another stellar Smash platter from the Killer.

(Kris Kristofferson - Shel Silverstein)
« © '70 Combine Music, BMI »
We're just goin' through the motions of the parts we've learned to play
Never quite together like before
Cause somehow darling somethin' good got lost along the way
And our song ain't nothing special anymore
Let's try it one more time with feeling darling take it from the top
Let me feel those tears a fallin' I don't want to miss a single drop
Darling make up believe you're making me believe each word you say
Try it once more with feeling and we'll call it a day
Ah you're reachin' out to touch me baby just the way you used to do
You're lookin' everywhere but in old Jerry's eyes
Well now honey that's an oldy and it's a goody but them words ain't ringing true
And you don't seem very sure of all of your life
Let's try it one more time with feeling baby take it take it from the top
Oh since then I wanna gonna be the big one honey
So give I ever think you've got
And if ever I been at that thing you left to give before
We go our seperate ways
Try it once more with feeling and we'll call it a day

(Merle Haggard)
« © '69 Tree Publishing, BMI »
It's a big job just gettin' by with nine kids and a wife
Jerry Lee's been a workin' man dang near all of his life
And I'll keep on workin' long as these two hands are fit to use
I'll drink my beer in a tavern and sing a little bit of them workin' man blues
I'll keep my nose on the grindstone work hard everyday
I might get a little drun on the weekends after I draw my pay
I'll be back workin' as long as these two hands are fit to use
I'll drink my whiskey at evening sing a little bit of them workin' man blues
[ piano ]
Sometimes I think about leavin' I do a little bummin' around
I wanna throw my bills out the window catch a train to another town
I go back workin' I gotta buy my kids a brand new pair of shoes
I'll drink my whiskey in a tavern and cry a little bit of them workin' man blues
I'll drink my whiskey in a tavern and cry a little bit of them workin' man blues
[ piano ]
I'll drink my whiskey in a tavern and cry a little bit of them workin' man blues

WAITING FOR A TRAIN
(Jimmie Rodgers)
« © '29 Peer International, BMI »
All around the water tank waitin' for a train
I'm a thousand miles away from home sleeping in the rain
I walked up to the brakeman just to make a line of talk
He said son you've got money I'll see that you don't walk
Well I haven't got a nickel not a penny can I show
Get off get off you railroad bum he slammed the boxcar door
[ yodel - piano ]
Well they put me off in Texas a state I dearly love
The wide open spaces all around me Lord the moon and stars above
My pocketbook is empty my old heart is filled with pain
I'm one thousand miles away from home and I'm waitin' for a train

BROWN EYED HANDSOME MAN
(Chuck Berry)
« © '56 Arc Music, BMI »
Arrested on charges of unemployment he was a sitting in the witness stand
The Judge's wife called up the district attorney
Said free that brown eyed handsome man
If you want your job you better free that brown eyed man
Flyin' cross the desert in a TWA I saw a woman walkin' cross the sand
She'd been a walkin' thirty miles on route to LA
To get a brown eyed handsome man
Ha ha a brown eyed handsome man
Way back in hist'ry three thousand years in fact ever since the world began
There's been a whole lot of women who sheddin' tears
For a brown eyed handsome man
That's right a brown eyed handsome man
[ piano ]
Milo de Venus was a beautiful lass she had the world in the palm of her hand
She lost both her arms in a wrestlin' match to meet a brown eyed handsome man
She really done it brown eyed handsome man
Way back in hist'ry three thousand years...

MY ONLY CLAIM TO FAME
(Glenn Sutton)
« © '69 Al Gallico Music, BMI »
Well I do not long to have great wealth or riches
For love means more to me than world acclaims
And now my cup it was filled when you first said you love me
But you're the only one I want to praise my name
Each time we kiss I make a small deposit
And an endless link of happy memories
And I can't live long enough to withdraw them
For one day with you is like eternity
Yes you changed my world into a bed of roses
And all my skies are now a perfect blue thanks to you
And in looking back at all of my achievements
Well now my greatest claim to fame is loving you
Yes my greatest claim to fame is loving you

SHE EVEN WOKE ME UP TO SAY GOODBYE
(Mickey Newbury - Doug Gilmore)
« © '69 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
Morning's come and Lord my mind is aching yes it is
Sunshine standing quietly at my door
Just like the dawn my heart is silently breaking
With my tears it goes tumbling to the floor
Once again the whole town will be talking yes they will
Lord I've seen the pity that's in their eyes
They can never understand it's her sorrow it's not a man
And no matter what they say we know she tried
Baby's packed her soft things and she's left me she's left me she's left me
And I know she didn't mean to make me cry
It's not her heart Lord it's her mind she didn't mean to be unkind
Why she even woke me up to say goodbye
It's not her heart Lord it's her mind...
Goodbye baby

WINE ME UP
(Billy Deaton - Faron Young - Eddie Crandell)
« © '69 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
I'm the center of attention in this barroom
Cause I've got that biggest heartache of the year
And each night those swinging doors reach out for me and draw me in
Cause they know each night I'll come back to wine me up again
Well wine me up turn me on and watch me cry for you
Lately drinking warm red wine is all I wanna do
And I never know how title I'll wine me up till I walk in
But I don't care cause I'm coming back to wine me up again
[ piano ]
But I'd like to thank to men who raised the grapes in California
And I'm hoping this is gonna be their biggest year
Raise them grapes son
Cause scarlet water's all that's left to keep ol' Jerry hanging on
And that's why I'll try to wine me up each day and night next year
I said wine me up turn me on and watch me cry for you...

WHEN THE GRASS GROWS OVER ME
(Don Chapel)
« © '69 Glad Music, BMI / Pappy Daily Music, BMI »
When you left I thought that I would soon get over you
Even told myself that I would find somebody too
Time and tears have come and gone but not your memory
But I'll be over you when the grass grows over me
Yes I'll be over you when you're standing over me
And as you look down at the cold cold ground I'm sleeping in
Don't expect to hear me say that I still love you then
Cause I'll be over you when the grass grows over me
Even when my eyes are closed darlin' they keep on seeing you
Every minute every minute time goes on I'm hurtin' through and through
And as long as I live I know I'll never be free
I'll be over you when that grass grows over me
Yes I'll be over you when you're standing over me...

YOU WENT OUT OF YOUR WAY (TO WALK ON ME)
(Paul Craft)
« © '69 Decapo Music, BMI »
You sat your sight on someone who belonged to someone else
Just to see if you could have the one you pleased
You weren't complete until you got me I lost her and then you dropped me
You went out of your way to walk on me
You went out of your way to walk on me
You were reaching for a soul that was not free yeah
With so many hearts for the taking you chose mine for the breaking
You went out of your way to walk on me
[ piano ]
Yeah you went out of your way to walk on me...
Oh baby you went out of your way to walk on me
Walk on baby
