After nearly 20 years and as many self-produced albums, LeDoux found himself attracting attention as the rodeo singer mentioned in Garth Brooks's first hit, "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)." Brooks's company soon offered the cowboy his first major-label contract. Here, his producers try to turn him into a conventional Nashville hat act.

COUNTRY FAIR
(Chris Ledoux)
« © '91 Lehsem Songs, BMI »

Been workin' like a dog slavin' on the fence line stretchin' those wires tight
Diggin' and tappin' and sweatin' in the sunshine but I get off tonight
I got a date with a girl a perdy rancher's daughter green as her golden hair
Gonna pick her up at eight after some soap and water
And we're headin' to the county fair

Well there's a full moon in the western sky and there's magic in the air
Ain't nothin' I know of can make you fall in love like a night at the county fair
[ guitar ]
Well we walked through the midway the lights and the laughter
She puts her little hand in mine
Well she don't act like she knows what I'm after
But tonight I'm gonna make her mine
You know the tunnel of love well it ain't my style
So I'm gonna take on the ferris wheel
Way up in the sky with the stars in her eyes
I'm gonna tell her just how I feel

Well there's a full moon in the western sky...
[ guitar ]
Well I know Monday mornin' I'll be back on the fence-line
But it'll be alright
Cause that perdy little girl says she's gonna be all mine
I'll see her next Friday night

Well there's a full moon in the western sky...

RIDING FOR A FALL
(Chris Ledoux)
« © '90 Lehsem Songs, BMI »

Last night you told her you could never hold her cause cowboy's got to be free
Her heart was breaking your heart was aching but you saddled up to follow your dream
Coffee on your campfire wind through the barbed wire huddled close to the flame
Though she's far behind you the night wind reminds you
Just keeps on whispering her name
You can make a run for the border try to hide at the hole in the wall
Don't you know your arms are aching to hold her
Cowboy even thought you're riding tall you're riding for a fall

Midnight the moon's up hands around your tiny cup frost settles in on the sage
Night's getting colder man you're getting older tonight you're feeling your age
Why don't you turn back just saddle up and backtrack
You'll never find a love quite like hers
Then tell me on a cold lonesome evening what the hell gives you freedom
Don't you think it's time you hung up your spurs
You can make a run for the border...
Cowboy you're riding for a fall

THANK THE COWBOY FOR A RIDE
(Ed Bruce - Paul Richey)
« © '90 Ed's Palomino Music, BMI / Richey Music, BMI »

Well he was pushing seven she was barely five
He rode up on his broomstick horse and said you wanna ride
His boots made a funny sound cause they were his daddy's size
His hat keep slippin' down below his eyes
And they rode off in the sunset down the sidewalk
She laughed at him every time that he talked
His two front teeth were missin' but he had the cutest smile
She thanked the cowboy for the ride

Well he was seventeen the next time he rode up
She'd never seen inside a pickup truck
Well he was tall and handsome smiling cuter than before
He'd grown up to fit them boots he wore
And they rode off in the sunset down the highway
They took their time gettin' home the back way
Later on in the front porch swing he pulled her by his side
She thanked the cowboy for the ride

Well he loved her like a child she'd always felt the same
So they settled down and hitched their dreams together
And they raised two broomstick cowboys and one little cowboy girl
To know God makes the sunsets of the world

Well he's almost sixty-seven and she'll admit to fourty-nine
He still loves her like a child and she still feels the same
Well he smiles a little slower at the twinkle in her eye
They still saddle up from time to time
And they ride off in the sunset in the evening
Stars as bright as if they'd never seen them

She never fails to say it before they go to bed at night
Well I love you cowboy thank you for the ride

CADILLAC COWBOY (OTHER SIDE OF THE HILL)
(Chuck Pyle)
« © '91 Bee'n Flower Music, BMI / Bug Music, BMI »

Hold tight with a leather fist watch out when he starts to twist
That's what their daddies used to tell them boys how to ride them bulls
I got a jingle in my jeans sore places in between
And I'm leavin' old Salt Lake with a push and a pull

10-4 buddy come on back a horse trailer on a Cadillac
Yeah we're talkin' to the cowboy in the Coupe deVille
Chug-a-luggin' up one side slidin' down the other
Well I'm a lover of the other side of the hill

Turn up that radio don't wanna think about a rodeo
Don't wanna think about a roundup up in old Cheyenne
It's a crazy circuit oh but still you work it
Turn down that sound boys let's get up and check the scan

10-4 buddy come on back a horse trailer on a Cadillac...
[ guitar - piano ]
Bandana hangin' on the mirror still wet from ear to ear
Well I guess it's true then what the wise men say
When you ride your last one make sure he's the best one
Jump while he's movin' tip your hat boys and walk away

10-4 buddy come on back a horse trailer on a Cadillac...
10-4 buddy come on back a horse trailer on a Cadillac...
Well I'm a lover of the other side of the hill

THIS COWBOY'S HAT
(Jake Brooks)
« © '82 Brooks Bros Publishers, BMI / Careers Music, BMI »

Well there's always been groups of people who couldn't see eye to eye
And I always thought if they'd get the chance to sit down and talk
Face to face they'd see we all have a lot in common

Well I was sittin' in a coffee shop just havin' a cup and passin' time
Swappin' rodeo stories with this cowboy friend of mine
When some motorcycle rider started snickerin' in the back
And started pokin' fun at my friend's hat
One ol' boy said hey Tex where'd you parked your horse
My friend just pulled his hat down low but they couldn't be ignored
One husky fella said I think I'll just rip that hat right off your head
And that's when my friend turned around and this is wha he said

You'll ride a black tornado across the western skies
You'll rope an ol' blue norther and milk it till it's dry
Bulldog the Mississippi and pin its ears down flat
Long before you take this cowboy's hat

Said pardener this ol' hat is better left alone
See it used to be my daddy's hat but last year he passed on
My nephew skinned the rattler that makes up the hatband
But in sixty-nine he died in Vietnam
Now the eagle feather was given to me by an Indian friend of mine
Someone ran him down somewhere around that Arizona line
And a real special lady gave me this hat pin
And I don't know if I'll see her again

You'll ride a black tornado across the western skies...

Now if your leather jacket means to you what this old hat means to me
Then I guess we understand each other and well just let it be
But if you still think it's funny then my back's against the wall
But you touch my hat you're gonna have to fight us all
Well then I caught a little sadness in that gangleader's eyes
Then he turned back to the others and they just kinda shuffled on outside
And when my friend turned back towards me I noticed that ol' hat brim
Was turned like a big ol' Texas grin

You'll ride a black tornado across the western skies...

SHOT FULL OF LOVE
(Bob McDill)
« © '80 Ranger Bob Music, ASCAP / PolyGram Int, ASCAP »

Once I had a heart cold as ice love to make was only for fun
I'd make a mark for each broken heart
Like notches on the butt of a gun
Once I had a trick up my sleeve and a reputation all over town
I was heartless and cold whatever I'd go
I shot down every young girl I found
Yes I used to be a moonlight bandit I used to be a heartbreak kid
Then I met you and the next thing I knew
There I was oh shot full of love

Well who'd have thought that someone like you could take a desperado like me
But oh here I am I'm as meek as a lamb
With my bleeding heart there at your feet
Yes I used to be a moonlight bandit...
Yes I used to be a moonlight bandit...

LAST DRIVE-IN
(Kim Tribblle - John Grubbs)
« © '91 BMG Songs, ASCAP / Brian's Dream, ASCAP / Judy Judy Judy Music, ASCAP »

Caravan of yellow wire and crawling across the plains
Rolling along in a single file like a slow moving train
It rumbled down out of the mist into the early morning light
Said they stay till the job was finished if it took them till midnight
There were cats and scrapers all caterpillars packed up by mile high crane
And it looked like monsters from the old b movies the drive-ins use to play
And we'd sang goodbye Saturday under the stars
Wake up little Suzy in my daddy's car
So many memories got lost and found
When a piece of history hit the ground
The day they tore the last drive-in down

Memories thick as the smoke clouds they made man and machine became one
Boards snapped like toothpicks on their blades but to us it sounded like guns
Cowboys soldiers gangsters and thieves James Bond and his golden girls
Well you could sit in your car and never turn the key and go half way around the world
And it stood like a landmark for forty years we never thought we'd live to see
It fall it to the ground and then just disappear like so many childhood dreams
And we'd sang goodbye...

A lot of the drivers had tears in their eyes but I don't think it was just the dust
See I still believe there's a little piece of that old drive-in left in all of us
Nobody moved through what seemed like hours, and slow motion it came tumbling down
We just stood there with a taste of metal in our mouths and a silence all around
The day they tore the last drive-in down
And we'd sang goodbye...

YELLOW BRICK ROAD TURNS BLUE
(Gary Vincent - Bernie Nelson)
« © '91 Gary Vincent Publishing, BMI »

You say that somewhere over the rainbow there's a star that you've been wishin' on
Well is the grass really that much greener than here where you belong
I hope that you find what you're after and I hope all of your dreams come true
Just remember I'll always be here when your yellow brick road turns blue
You say that you're having trouble tellin' me why you can't stay
It's not that you don't really love me
It's just the winds of change are blowin' your way
I know there's a road that you must follow but my heart won't give up on you
So remember I'll always be here when your yellow brick road turns blue
Somewhere far away you think you'll find your dreams
But sometimes that ole pot of gold isn't always what it seems
So if you ever find yourself lonely and things don't work out like you planned
You'll know there's a place to come home to and that I will always understand
I hope that you find what you're after I hope all of your dreams come true
Just remember I'll always be here when your yellow brick road turns blue
Just remember I'll always be here when your yellow brick road turns blue

SETTIN' THE WOODS ON FIRE
(Fred Rose - Ed G. Nelson)
« © '52 Milene Music, ASCAP »

Comb your hair and paint and powder you act proud and I'll act prouder
You sing loud and I'll sing louder tonight we're settin' the woods on fire
You're my gal and I'm your feller dress up in your frock of yeller
I'll look swell but you'll look sweller settin' the woods on fire
We'll take in all the honky tonks tonight we're havin' fun
We'll show the folks a brand new dance that never has been done
I don't care who thinks we're silly you'll be daffy and I'll be dilly
We'll order up two bowls of chili settin' the woods on fire

I'll gas up my hot rod stoker we'll get hotter than a poker
You'll be broke but I'll be broker tonight we're settin' the woods on fire
We'll sit close to one another up one street and down the other
We'll have us a time oh brother settin' the woods on fire
We'll put aside a little time to fix a flat or two
My tires and tubes are doin' fine but the air is showin' through
You clap hands and I'll start bowin' we'll do all the laws allowin'
Tomorrow I'll be right back plowin' settin' the woods on fire

WORKIN' MAN'S DOLLAR
(Chris Ledoux)
« © '91 Lehsem Songs, BMI »

Well I'm just workin' man's dollar in the pocket of his old blue jeans
I ain't like my Wall Street brother he's in a bank so shiny and clean
Well I'm faded and I'm wrinkled
Tattered and stained with sweat but I'm the first one called
When Uncle Sam needs a hand with the National debt
I've been wages for the farm hand for driving an old John Deere
I've been laid on a bar in a tavern to buy a workin' man an ice cold beer
I've been tipped to a truckstop waitress taped where I was torn
In the hand of a child I was laid on on a plate in a church on Sunday morn
They say I'm the root of all evil I bring lust power and greed
But this workin' man's dollar only buys the things a workin' man really needs

Well they say I'm worth about fifty cents in this modern and inflated age
But don't tell that to the young man slavin' to make it on a minimum wage
Or that single workin' mother she's been scrapin' to make ends meet
To keep food on the table and shoes on the babies feet
Well I know my days are numbered I'm gettin' threadbare and wearing thin
And they'll replace me with another but I'd do it all again
Cause I've seen this great big country pass from hand to calloused hand
And I've got to say that I'm mighty proud that I belong to the workin' man
They say I'm the root...
