By the time guitarist and singer Chris LeDoux completed this album, Haywire, he had already seen the release of more than two-dozen others — impressive enough — but he doesn't show any sign of slowing in his career. The songs on Haywire are mostly what is common LeDoux cowboy country-style, done the way he does it best. Since he is a real cowboy — he spent time riding in the rodeo and became a champion bareback rider — maybe he just has a better feel for the subject matter than many singers, and it comes through in his voice. LeDoux's skills really shine on this offering, with numbers like "Hairtrigger Colts," "Dallas Days and Fort Worth Nights," "Tougher Than the Rest," and the 1991 Billy Dean hit "Billy the Kid." This album isn't as long as a best-of collection, carrying only ten tracks, but they are all strong songs, and that makes Haywire a good addition to your country shelf. As a bounce, the album comes with a booklet that holds a few pictures.

HONKY TONK WORLD
(Craig Wiseman - Paul Nelson)
« © '93 Almo Music, ASCAP / Tree Publishing, BMI / Warner-Tamerlane Publishing, BMI »

Well there used to be a time candlelight and wine was all that a woman would need
Man you were a winner if you took her out to dinner or a movie she wanted to see
But the world has turned and it's time you learned that the old ain't working no more
Yeah the rules have changed it's brand new game and buddy if you want to score

You've got to get off the couch get out of the house long about Friday night
Shine up your boots polish up your moves if you want to keep her satisfied
Oh a little bump and grind will do it every time if you want to keep your little girl
But you don't stand a chance less you take her out and dance
Cause we're living in a honky tonk world

Well sooner or later all you couch potatoes are gonna be the lonely ones
And if you want good lovin' then you gotta keep up
And you better know your Brook's from your Dunn's
Don't even think that your Engelbert Humperdink record's gonna turn her on
Cause Mister you can bet if you don't know the steps
Then you're gonna get left at home

You've got to get off the couch out of the house...
[ guitar - fiddle ]
Now if you were cro-magnon you'd be draggin' them woman by the hair to your cave
You'd be down on your knees citin' them soliloquies back in Romeo's day
Yeah you'd be kind of nifty if we were in the Fifties and you had a cool car to drive
But we're living in the Nineties so you better shake your hiney
Or you're gonna get left behind

You've got to get off the couch...
No you don't stand a chance less you take her out and dance
Cause we're living in a honky tonk world

DALLAS DAYS AND FORT WORTH NIGHTS
(Kris Bergsnes - Gordon Eatherly)
« © '94 Blake Eyed Susan Music, BMI / Club Zoo Music, BMI / Rain Crown Music, BMI »

Under the skies of old Big D he works a nine-to-five
Bending steel and driving nails by phone in a suit and tie
He fights traffic in his Mercedes to put on his cowboy boots
Then he climbs on board his pickup truck and barrels on out of the chute

Dallas days and Fort Worth nights
All day long he sets his sights on ice cold beer and neon lights
From sky high beams to bucking machines he's a single man with a double life
Dallas days and Fort Worth nights

Yeah he's headed honky tonkin' to a place they call Cowtown
He's gonna hit the floor hip-hoppin' just spinnin' when the sun goes down
He'll buy a drink for a cowgirl hopin' to quench her thirst
One that'll take him to heaven and bring him back down to earth

Dallas days and Fort Worth nights...
[ guitar - fiddle ]
Dallas days and Fort Worth nights...
All day long he sets his sights on ice cold beer and neon lights
Dallas days and Fort Worth nights
Oh Dallas days and Fort Worth nights

TOUGHER THAN THE REST
(Bruce Springsteen)
« © '87 Bruce Springsteen Music, ASCAP »

Well it's Saturday night you're all dressed up in blue
I've been watchin' you awhile maybe you've been watchin' me too
So somebody ran out left somebody's heart in a mess
Well if you're looking for love honey I'm tougher than the rest

Some girls they want a handsome Dan or some good looking Joe
On their arms some girls want a sweet talking Romeo
We'll round here baby I've learned you get what you can get
So if you're rough and ready for love honey I'm tougher than the rest

Oh your road is dark and it's a thin thin line
But I want you to know I'd walk it for you anytime
Maybe your other boyfriends they couldn't pass the test
So if you're rough and ready for love honey I'm tougher than the rest
[ guitar + steel ]
Well it ain't no secret I've been around a time or two
Well I don't know but maybe you've been around too
But there's another dance all you got to do is say yes
And if you're looking for love honey I'm tougher than the rest
And if you're looking for love honey I'm tougher than the rest

BIG LOVE
(Michael Clark - Jeff Stevens)
« © '94 Warner-Tamerlane Publishing, BMI »

You need a man to get lost it with a heart big enough to roam
No more fences for you to look through with your heart caught in a strangle hold
I've got a love full of wide open spaces

I've got a big love wild and free room to grow as big as your dreams
Deep as a river in a raging flood endless as the stars above
I've got a big love

When two hearts make a stand together on the solid rock of trust
They could be a million miles from each other still be side by side in love
I want to love you like that forever

I've got a big love wild and free...
[ fiddle ]
You never dreamed you could have all you ever wanted
Darling you can have it with me

I've got a big love wild and free...
I got a big love

LOVE NEEDS A FOOL
(Michael Ehming - Michael Lunn)
« © '94 Dinger And Ollie Music, BMI »

She lives for the thunder he lives for the rain
She was born in Manhattan he grew up near Spokane
He found her sittin' by the side of the road
Her long hair shining like that black Texas gold
They've nothing in common cept the need to move on
So they headed for someone further along
[ mandolin ]
Dust devils were spinning out across the fields
That bridge was a burning underneath their wheels
That old muddy river was just a running wild
For that Western boy and a sweet yankee child
She was more of a woman than any girl he ever knew
He had no idea what his world was coming to

Love needs a fool how bout you how bout you
Love needs a fool how about you girl

Old white picket fences by the side of the road
Hanging on broken hinges too weak to take the load
Just like that old farm boy when he wrapped her in his arms
He knew he'd never hold her long enough to tame that young girl's heart

But he loved her with a fever that went way across the line
By the time that she sun was high she was holding on through the tears she cried

Love needs a fool...

You gotta be fool enough to believe in love if you want to believe in you
[ guitar ]
Love needs a fool...

SLOW DOWN
(Kim Williams - Kent Blazy - Garth Brooks)
« © '93 Cross Keys Publishing, ASCAP »

Well I used to laugh with an old friend till the busy world pulled him away
Every now and then I see him again but he's not the same man I knew yesterday
His smile just grows smaller and smaller and the worry lines fill up his face
But lately I'm thinking the next time I see him just what I'm gonna say

Slow down man in the mirror slow down
You're running too fast to see what life's all about
This world ain't a fire for you to put out
The best times are here and now slow down

Some days I look back on the hard times and they really don't seem all that bad
Well I've got to admit I like what I've got but God I sure loved what I had
But it's only on top of the mountain after burning your life at both ends
You look back to see where you want to be is exactly where you've always been

Slow down man in the mirror slow down...

SONS OF THE PIONEERS
(Chris Ledoux)
« © '89 Lehsem Songs, BMI »

Well way out west where the wild wind blows
The eagle flies and the sage brush grows
Traditions are holding on you'll be glad to hear
They're being kept alive by the Sons of the Pioneers

Like that young cowboy from old Montana
Got boots and spurs and a black bandana
He rides the wild prairie roundin' up the steers
Just like his daddy he's a Son of the Pioneers

From Texas clear up the Idaho from the mountains to the plains
They got the blood of Crockett and Geronimo flowing through their veins
Now the wild old west is changing some but traditions persevere
They're being kept alive by the Sons of the Pioneers
[ piano - fiddle ]
There's a gal down in Texas with a great big hat
She likes roping and dancing and things like that
And if you need a hand at your branding she'll volunteer
She's a wild prairie flower and a daughter of the Pioneers

He's got braids and hat with an eagle feather
He rides with broncs there ain't none better
And his great grandaddy was a chief on the wild frontier
And he's a proud son of the original Pioneers

Well from Texas clear up the Idaho...
They're being kept alive by the Sons of The Pioneers

BILLY THE KID
(Charlie Daniels)
« © '76 Songs Of Universal, BMI »

In the Southern part of Texas East and West of El Paso
Where the mighty Franklin Mountains guard the trail to Mexico
There's a new made widow crying and a hearse a rolling slow
And I guess that devil's passed this way again

There's a lathered sorrel stallion running through the Joshua Trees
A young man in the saddle with his coattails in the breeze
Got a six-gun on his right hip and a rifle at his knee
And he's dealing in a game that he can't win

Poor Billy Bonney you're only twenty-one
Pat Garrett's got your name on every bullet in his gun
Each notch you carve on your six-gun's got has a bloody tale to tell
Well you're a mile ahead of Garrett and a step outside of hell
[ guitar ]
Them fancy clothes you're wearing and the women in your bed
Can't take away the faces of the men that you left dead
As you ride across the Badlands with a price upon your head
Now the wheel of fortune starts to turn

Your reputation's grown till it's the biggest in the land
And there ain't a lot of people left who wanna call your hand
And I guess you'll go down shootin' just like all brand of men
And when you shake hands with the Devil you get burned

Poor Billy Bonney you're only twenty-one...
[ guitar ]
Poor Billy Bonney you're only twenty-one...

HAIRTRIGGER COLT'S .44
(Lawrecne Lore Shoberg)
« © '94 Heavy Leather Music, BMI / Shy Ann Music, BMI »

I'm a man who's goin' to hell with heaven's blessing
The judge said I'm not fit to live with men
They're building me a gallows in the courtyard
To make sure I don't pass this way again

My first taste of killing was at Vicksburg
I must have shot me a hundred men
I learned to make my living with a six-gun
I'm an outlaw now but I was a hero then

Oh Lord if I had only known the misery
That glory's something not worth killing for
I wish now I had never touched the handle
Of a Hairtrigger Colt's 44

I was a haunted desperado
A wanted man with a price on my head
I thought that I could steal a taste of freedom
But I got me a hangman's noose instead

Oh Lord if I had only known the misery...

Undertaker write on my tombstone
A killer finally killed and nothin' more
But I wouldn't be here if it hadn't been for Providence
And a Hairtrigger Colt's .44

Oh Lord if I had only known the misery...
Oh Lord if I had only known the misery...

LIGHT OF THE WORLD
(Bob McDill - Paul Williams)
« © '90 Ranger Bob Music, ASCAP / PolyGram Int, ASCAP »

In a lonely all night diner on a rainy city street
A girl eats at the counter with a suitcase at her feet
And the waitress looks her over and she knows that she can't pay
So when the girl slips out the door she looks the other way

There's a small light in the dark night human kindness deep inside us
If you see it in somebody's eyes there's no reason to be so surprised
Let it shine on it's only the light of the world

In an empty Greyhound station an old man stands alone
He counts out all his money to buy a ticket home
And the agent says he's got enough and puts the money in the drawer
Then he reaches in his pocket and puts in a dollar more

There's a small light in the dark night...
[ guitar ]
On a dark deserted highway a boy holds out his thumb
Two headlights they light up his face as he turns his collar up
And the trucker he goes right on by as the snow starts comin' down
But then five miles on down the road he stops and turns around
Let it shine on let it shine on let it shine on

There's a small light...
There's a small light...
