Released to cash in on the "outlaw" movement in country music, this was the first country album to sell a million. Fans already had much of this material from other sources (most of the track were just re-issues). It served as a sampler for new fans — and served well. This could whet one's appetite to search out the entire Waylon & Willie RCA catalogue.

MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN COWBOYS
(Sharon Vaughn)
« © '76 PolyGram Int, ASCAP »
[ Waylon Jennings ]
I grew up a dreaming of being a cowboy
And loving the cowboy ways
Pursuing the life of my high ridin' heroes
I burned up my childhood days
I learned all the rules of a modern day drifter
Don't you hold on to nothin' too long
Just take what you need from the ladies then leave them
With the words of a sad country song
My heroes have always been cowboys
And they still are it seems
Sadly in search of and one step in back of
Themselves and their slow movin' dreams
Cowboys are special with their own brand
Of mis'ry from being alone too long
You could die from the cold in the arms of a nightmare
Knowing well that your best days are gone
Pickin' up hookers instead of my pen
I let the words of my youth fade away
Old wornout saddles and old wornout mem'ries
With no one and no place to stay
My heroes have always been cowboys...

HONKY TONK HEROES
(Billy Joe Shaver)
« © '73 ATV Songs, BMI »
[ Waylon Jennings ]
Low down leavin's sun done did everything that needs done
Woe is me why can't I see I'd best be leavin' well enough alone
Them neon lightin' nights couldn't stay out of fights
Keep a hauntin' me in memories
Well there's one in every crowd for crying out loud
Why was it always turnin' out to be me
Where does it go the good Lord only knows
Seems like it was just the other day
I was down at Green Gables a hawkin' them tables
And generally blowin' all my hard earned pay
Piano roll blues danced holes in my shoes
There weren't another other way to be
For loveable losers and noaccount boozers
And honky tonk heroes like me hey hey
Where does it go the good Lord only knows...
[ harmonica - guitar ]
Where do it goes the good Lord only knows...

I'M LOOKING FOR BLUE EYES
(Miriam Eddy)
« © '76 Songs Of PolyGram, BMI »
[ Jessi Colter ]
I'm looking for blue eyes has anyone seen him
Don't you tell me he gave up on me
I'm looking for blue eyes I've got to find him
Cause something tells me he's looking for me
There was a time when blue eyes said he'd love no other
His one and only love he swore I'd be
There was a time when his blue eyes saw clearer than mine did
Storms and rain tears and pain bring me back his way
Looking for blue eyes has anyone seen him...
I'm looking for blue eyes has anyone seen him

YOU MEAN TO SAY
(Miriam Eddy)
« © '76 Songs Of PolyGram, BMI »
[ Jessi Colter ]
You mean to say you're gonna go and leave me
You mean to say that it would be that easy
You mean to say that's you I see walkin' away
What'd I say what'd I do wrong could it be I stayed here too long
You mean to say you'd walk away from me
You mean to say the love we knew is now at an end is now at an end
You mean to say a walking away we'll never love again we'll never love again
Okay okay you must be going but you don't go before I'm knowing
What'd I do to make you change your mind
You mean to say the love we knew...
We'll never love again

SUSPICIOUS MINDS
(Mark James)
« © '68 ATV Songs, BMI »
[ Waylon & Jessi ]
We're caught in a trap can't walk out
Because I love you too much baby
Why can't you see what you're doing to me
When you don't believe a word I'm saying
We can't go on together with suspicious minds
We can't do our dreams on suspicious minds
I saw an old friend I know I stopped to say hello
Would I could still see suspicion in your eyes
Here we go again you ask me where I've been
You can't see the tears are real I'm crying
We can't go on together with suspicious minds
We can't build our dreams on suspicious minds
Let our love survive or dry the tears from your eyes
Don't let a good thing die don't you know I never lied to you
We're caught in a trap can't walk out...
Caught in a trap can't walk out...

GOOD HEARTED WOMAN
(Waylon Jennings - Willie Nelson)
« © '71 Songs Of PolyGram, BMI / Full Nelson Music, BMI »
[ Waylon & Willie ]
A long time forgotten are dreams that just fell by the way
And the good life he promised ain't what she's living today
But she never complains of the bad times or the bad things he's done Lord
She just talks about the good times they've had and all the good times to come
She's a good hearted woman in love with a good timin' man
And she loves him in spite of his wicked ways that she don't understand
Through teardrops and laughter they'll pass through this world hand in hand
A good hearted woman lovin' her good timin' man
Now he likes the bright lights and night life and good timin' friends
And when the party's all over she'll welcome him back home again
Lord she don't understand him but she does the best that she can
Now rhis good hearted woman lovin' her good timin' man
Now she's a good hearted woman...
She's a good hearted woman...

(Willie Nelson)
« © '73 Full Nelson Music, BMI »
[ Waylon & Willie ]
Sometimes it's heaven and sometimes it's hell sometimes I don't even know
Sometimes I take it as far as I can sometimes I don't even go
My front tracks're headin' for a cold water well
Back tracks're covered with snow
Sometimes it's heaven sometimes it's hell sometimes I don't even know
[ trumpet ]
Heaven ain't walkin' the street paved with gold hell ain't a mountain of fire
Heaven is layin' in my sweet baby's arms hell is when baby ain't there
My front tracks're headin'...
(Sometimes it's heaven sometimes it's hell sometimes I don't even know)

ME AND PAUL
(Willie Nelson)
« © '71 Full Nelson Music, BMI »
It's been rough and rocky travelin' but I'm finally standing upright on the ground
After takin' several readings I'm surprised to find my mind's still fairly sound
I guess Nashville was the roughest but I know I said the same about them all
We've received our education in the cities of the nation me and Paul
Almost busted in Laredo but for reasons that I'd rather not disclose
But if you're stayin' in a motel there and leave
Just don't leave nothin' in your clothes
And at the airport in Milwaukee they refused to let us board the plane at all
They said we looked suspicious but I believe they like to pick on me and Paul
On a package show in Buffalo with us and Kitty Wells and Charlie Pride
The show was long and we're just sittin' there
And we'd come to play and not just for the ride
Well we drunk a lot of whiskey so I don't know if we went on that night at all
I don't think they even missed us I guess Buffalo ain't geared for me and Paul

YESTERDAY'S WINE
(Willie Nelson)
« © '71 Full Nelson Music, BMI »
[ Willie Nelson]
Miracles appear in the strangest of places
Fancy meeting you here
The last time I saw you was just out of Houston
Sit down let me buy you a beer
Your presence is welcome with me and my friend here
This is a hangout of mine
We come here quite often and listen to music
Partaking of yesterday's wine
Yesterday's wine I'm yesterday's wine
Aging with time like yesterday's wine
Yesterday's wine we're yesterday's wine
Aging with time like yesterday's wine
You give the appearence of one widely travelled
I'll bet you've seen things in your time
So sit down beside me and tell me your story
If you think you'll like yesterday's wine
Yesterday's wine we're yesterday's wine...

T FOR TEXAS (BLUE YODEL NO.1)
(Jimmie Rodgers)
« © '28 Peer International, BMI »
[ Tompall Glaser ]
Well T for Texas T for Tennessee
I said T for Texas T for Tennessee
T for Telma the gal that made a wreck out of me
Yeah if you don't want my love mama you sure don't have to stall
If you don't want my love mama you sure don't have to stall
Cause I can get more women than a passanger train could haul
Well I'm goin' where the water drinks like cherry wine
I'm goin' where the water drink like cherry wine
Cause this Georgia water tastes like turpentine
[ guitar - organ - piano ]
Yeah if you don't want my love woman...
I'd rather drink muddy water sleep in a hollow log
I'd rather drink muddy water sleep in a hollow log
Than to be here in Atlanta and treated like a dirty dog
Oh women make a fool out of me
[ guitar ]
Baby everytime in Mobile you can look me up
Baby everytime in Mobile you can look me up
And if you're ever in Atlanta tell Lucille to go to hell
Oh women make a fool out of me
T for Texas T for Tennessee Lord Lord
I said T for Texas T for Tennessee
T for Telma the gal that made a wreck out of me

PUT ANOTHER LOG ON THE FIRE
(Shel Silverstein)
« © '75 Evil Eye Music, BMI »
[ Tompall Glaser ]
Put another log on the fire
Cook me up some bacon and some beans
And go out to the car and change the tire
Wash my socks and sew my old blue jeans
Come on baby you can fill my pipe and then go fetch my slippers
And boil me up another pot of tea
Then put another log on the fire babe
And come and tell me why you're leaving me
Now don't I let you wash the car on Sunday
And don't I warn you when you're gettin' fat
Ain't I a gonna take you fishin' with me someday
Well a man can't love a woman more than that
Ain't I always nice to your kid sister
Don't I take her driving every night
So sit here at my feet cause I like you when you're sweet
And you know it ain't feminine to fight
So put another log on the fire...
