WORKIN' CHEAP

(Troy Seals - Max D. Barnes) « © '90 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Every since the day I was big enough to put my pants on by myself
You could find me somewhere with the radio turned on
Then one night I gave my heart to an old beat-up guitar
It never left my arms till I was almost grown

I had to try my hand as a workin' man tried to be my daddy's son
But my mind was packed and gone and headed south
Momma said I'll pray for you then she said goodbye
To the only one out of seven that didn't work out

Now I'm way down hear in Dixie playing honky tonk music
Keepin' some joint a jumpin' every night of the week
Lord knows it's hard to keep a dance hall woman happy
When you're drinkin' a little too much and you're workin' cheap
[ guitar ] Well I ain't done a thing I can brag about to anyone back home
Just another night club singer with a real good band
If a jealous woman don't kill me and momma keeps on prayin'
Someday I might be more than what I am

Now I'm way down hear in Dixie...
When you're drinkin' a little too much and you're workin' cheap

WHAT BOTHERS ME MOST

(Troy Seals - Max D. Barnes) « © '90 Irving Music, BMI / Hardscratch Music, BMI »
I could lay aside my better judgement
I could turn my back on all the pain
Make believe you mean it when you touch me
And be fool enough to think you'd change

I'm no fool and you're not changing
You know I'm telling the heartbreaking truth
You've gone wild and I'm going crazy
And what bothers me most is I don't bother you

Late at night you're such a great temptation
I'm too weak to fight you everytime
Lying in my bed of desperation
I want you lying in these arms of mine

I'm no fool and you're not changing...
Oh what bothers me most is I don't bother you

EAGLE

(Hank Cochran - Red Lane - Mack Vickery) « © '86 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Lord knows I am peaceful when I'm left alone
I've always been an eagle it's been a while since I have flown
My claws are as sharp as ever so's my eagle eye
Something's gonna go to ground when the eagle flies

Lately I've heard rumors that the eagle may be lame
Just because I've been idle don't mean that I'm tame
You've jeopardized my freedom my natural place to roost
I can fly when I have to they've turned the eagle loose

So lay all your doubts aside when you go to bed tonight
My feathers are all ruffled now I'm ready for a fight
Just because I took a while to fly don't mean I don't care
When you feel the shadow crossing the eagle's in the air

So lay all your doubts aside...
When you feel the shadow crossing the eagle's in the air

HER MAN

(Kent M. Robbins) « © '90 Irving Music, BMI »
I'm gonna change my ways of doing things around here
I'm turning over a new leaf gonna get myself in gear
Cause I've got a woman who's better than most
And I've made a mess of her plans
So startin' today all I'm gonna be is her man

I've been a wild catter and a go go getter
Been an SOB right down to the letter
I've had misadventures I even got pictures
Of even more than I can stand
So startin' today all I want a be is her man

I'm gonna give it all back cause all I've done is take
I've put her on the back burner while I was out on the make
But I've got a woman who's good enough to give me
A second chance again
So starting today all I'm gonna be is her man

I've been a wild catter and a go go getter...

I'm a little bit late but I'm wise enough
I'm taking her by the hand
Startin' today all I want a be is her man

WRONG

(Steve Seskin - Andre Pessis) « © '90 Endless Frogs Music, ASCAP / ATV Tunes, ASCAP »
It was a picture perfect wedding we had the whole world at our feet
Everyone thought we were heading down a lovers easy street
We'd have a house out in the country a picket fence the whole nine yards
They said our love would last forever it was written in the stars

Wrong I should have known it all along
When the future looks too bright
Can't be anything but right wrong

I was all but devastated when she told me we were through
In a while the heartache faded and I found somebody new
I swore that this time would be different I had it all figured out
I wouldn't make the same mistakes I knew what love was all about

Wrong I should have known it all along...

Wrong everything was going strong
The sky was always blue
Thought my dreams had all come true wrong wrong

WHERE CORN DON'T GROW

(Roger Murrah - Mark Allan) « © '88 Murrah Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
As we sat on the front porch
Of that ole gray house where I was born and raised
And stared out at the dusty fields
Where daddy's always worked hard every day
I think it kinda hurt him when I said daddy there's a lot that I don't know
But don't you ever dream about a life where corn don't grow

He just sat there silent staring in his favorite coffee cup
I saw a storm of mixed emotion in his eyes when he looked up
He said son I know at your age it feels like this old world is turning slow
And you think you'll find the answer to it all where corn don't grow

But hard times are real there's dusty fields no matter where you go
You may change your mind cause the weeds are high where corn don't grow
[ ac.guitar ] I remember feeling guilty when daddy turned and walked back in the house
I was only seventeen back then but it seems like I knew more than I do now
I can't say he didn't tell me this city life's a hard row to hoe
It's funny how a dream can turn around where corn don't grow

But hard times are real...
You may change your mind cause the weeds are high where corn don't grow

RENO AND ME

(John Hadley - Kevin Welch) « © '82 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Reno and me hit the freeway south out of town on a run
Reno was driving he asked me to roll him one
I turned on the radio found us some sweet Emmylou
I sang the harmony low down and out of key Reno just howled at the moon

Somewhere outside Kansas City on the highway that leads to Cheyenne
The radio quit on a song by a Mexican band
Well I guess we were lost in thoughts of brown skin girls
Took a couple wrong turns in a row
Reno and me we just laughed we agreed it don't matter which way you go

It don't matter which way you go
When you're callin' the highway your home
When every old town's just your past burning down
It don't matter which way you go

All of our old friends got married do all their business in town
Climbing a ladder that leads to a hole in the ground
Reno and me we talked it all out and one thing that we'll never know
What's the point of a race where you stay in one place
Believing there's somewhere to go

It don't matter which way you go...
It don't matter which way you go...

TOO CLOSE TO CALL

(Chester Lester) « © '90 Chester Lester Music, BMI / Songs Of The Knoll, BMI / Talmont Music, BMI »
I have battled with the demons for my soul
Like a soldier unafraid stood straight and tall
With strong convictions fought for what I thought was right and wrong
But I wonder when it stands in judgement hall
Will it go down as one too close to call

I have faced that cunning ennemy called time
For awhile I held him cold and to a draw
As he rode away he said another place and day
Cause you can't erase the writing on the wall
Although this one was just too close to call
[ guitar ] As I wrestled with my deepest fear if life
I was captured by the shadows on the wall
I was brave but just the same I was glad when morning came
Cause now and then the footsteps in the hall
Remind me it was just too close to call

I have watched my mind dance too close to the edge
As I stood among the crowd to see it fall
Sometimes now I cling to what I hope is sanity
I stagger on this fine like that I walk
And wonder is it just too close to call

WAKING UP WITH YOU

(Roger Murrah - Waylon Jennings - Charlie Craig) « © '90 Murrah Music, BMI / Careers Music, BMI /
Waylon Jennings Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

Like a sail that's torn and can't ride the wind
Here I stand looking both ways again
I'm a dollar short on a three dollar night
Turning left cause I ain't got no right

I keep thinking this time maybe it
But somehow all the pieces just won't fit
But I'll always have a dream to hold on to
Just as long as I keep waking up with you

You told me once that storms never last
I know it's true oh so true
Just when I think the clouds will never pass
Like a silver lining you come shining through

I know you'll always be there right or wrong
Together we'll keep on keeping on
And I'll always have a dream to hold on to
Just as long as I keep waking up with you

You told me once that storms never last...
I know you'll always be there right or wrong...

I'll always have a dream to hold on to
Just as long as I keep waking up with you

OLD CHURCH HYMNS AND NURSERY RHYMES

(Mike Chapman) « © '90 Macy Place Music, ASCAP / WB Music, ASCAP »
Blow on you restless wind up to your old tricks again
Bear down you Texas sun you make the desserts dry and the brush fires run
Splintered wood rusty chains this old front porch swing remains
A pendelum of memories goes back and forth on a summer breeze

Singing old church hymns and nursery rhymes
From the days way back before my time
With a little child upon my knee singing every sweet word back to me
Look how far I had to come to get back where I started from
With a child's wisdom passing time
Singing old church hymns and nursery rhymes

I've run the race I've walked the wire I paid the price of my desire
And the only time I've known it all is just before I took a fall
So howl you lone coyote song fade to sapphire sky of dawn
Count me in the lucky men to send the world around again

Singing old church hymns and nursery rhymes...
