lp discography - covers & lyrics

Recorded at the height of the rock & roll establishment's infatuation with George Jones in the late '70s, Bartender's Blues is one of the most uneven and misdirected albums in his catalog. Though the production is dated, leaning too close to the soft rock with its electric pianos, the main flaw with the album is the material. Apart from the excellent weeper "I'll Just Take It Out in Love," the strongest song is the forced title track, which is essentially James Taylor's impression of what life in a honky tonk must be. The remaining songs don't deal in such hackneyed clichés, but they don't have its melodic force, either. That means that the album becomes just a wash of songs, despite Jones' fine performance.

BARTENDER'S BLUES

(James Taylor) « © '77 Country Road Music, ASCAP »
Now I'm just a bartender and I don't like my work
But I don't mind the money at all
I see lots of sad faces and lots of bad cases
Of folks with their backs to the wall

But I need four walls around me to hold my life
To keep me from going astray
And a honky tonk angel to hold me tight
To keep me from slipping away

I can light up your smokes I can laugh at your jokes
I can watch you fall down on your knees
I can close down this bar I can gas up my car
And I can pack up and mail in my keys

But I need four walls around me to hold my life...
[ guitar ] Now the smoke fills the air of this honky tonk bar
And I'm thinkin' bout where I'd rather be
But I've burned all my bridges and I sunk all my ships
Now I'm standin' at the edge of the sea

I still need four walls around me to hold my life...

I'LL JUST TAKE IT OUT IN LOVE

(Bob McDill) « © '77 Ranger Bob Music, ASCAP / PolyGram Int, ASCAP »
I gave you love when you were lonely
And I gave you strenght when times were bad
I've been a daddy to your children
And I've dried your tears when you were sad

But darling you don't need to thank me
Having you is thanks enough
And if there's anything you owe me
Darling I'll just take it out in love
[ fiddle ] I've been your friend when you were troubled
And I've stood by you when things went wrong
I've picked you up each time you stumbled
When you were weak then I was strong

But darling you don't need to thank me...
Darling I'll just take it out in love

IF YOU LOVED A LIAR

(Earl Montgomery - George Jones) « © '77 Uncanny Music, BMI / Careers Music, BMI »
How could I be so unaware that you couldn't see the sign
I must think that you're a fool can't read between the lines
I'll say one thing then I run to her and I think you don't suspect
But if you loved a liar darling you'd hug my neck

Lord I drained you dry of all you faith each time yuor back was turned
It seems with all the love you gave I've never been concerned
How could my broken promises gain back all your respect
For if you loved a liar darling you'd hug my neck

How could my broken promises gain back all your respect
For if you loved a liar darling you'd hug my neck

AIN'T YOUR MEMORY GOT NO PRIDE AT ALL

(Red Lane - Boyce Porter - Bucky Jones) « © '74 Tree Publishing, BMI / Cross Keys Publishing, ASCAP »
I woke up with her in my arms this morning
God knows I love her over all
As she whispered she loved me your memory appeared
Ain't your mem'ry got no pride at all

Tonight I lay here touching her sweet body
And the good familiar feeling I recall
I closed my eyes to kiss her your memory appeared
Ain't your mem'ry got no pride at all

You were here we loved but now you're gone
Why can't you let bygones all be bygones yes and stay gone
You always find the wrong times to come around to call
Ain't your mem'ry got no pride at all
Ain't your mem'ry got no pride at all

I GAVE IT ALL UP FOR YOU

(Earl Montgomery - Terry Skinner) « © '77 Careers Music, BMI »
Fresh out of school I made plans to go to college
Be a doctor or a lawayer is what I wanted to do
But we fell in love and soon we were married
And I gave it all up for you

Then we moved up north I got a job at the factory
I worked very hard and my promotion came through
But you got homesick and we moved back to your mama's
And I gave it all up for you

But I have no regrets for the hard times we met
And the years of loving you like I do
And when my life is through you know I'd give that up too
And I'd give it all up for you

When my life is through you know I'd give that up too
And I'd give it all up for you

I DON'T WANT NO STRANGER SLEEPIN' IN MY BED

(Bill Emerson - George Jones) « © '77 Cypress Music, ASCAP / Uncanny Music, BMI »
I don't want no stranger's footsteps in my bedroom
Pullin' down my window shades and messin' up my spread
I don't want nobody fluffin' up my pillow
I don't want no stranger sleepin' in my bed

If I have to cross the world without you
Always keep in mind what I said
I don't want nobody's arms around you
I don't want no stranger sleepin' in my bed

I don't want no stranger's footsteps in my bedroom...
[ steel ] I guess that I still need some reassurance
To keep those cheatin' thoughts out of my mind
And though you never gave me thought to doubt you
Darlin' let me tell you one more time

I don't want no stranger's footsteps in my bedroom...
No I don't want no stranger sleepin' in my bed

I AIN'T GOT NO BUSINESS DOIN' BUSINESS TODAY

(Danny Morrison - Johnny Slate) « © '78 Tree Publishing, BMI / House Of Music, BMI »
(No he ain't got no business doin' business today)
Well I ain't got no business doin' business today
Cause my little woman wants to stay home and play
And right in her arms is where I will stay
No I ain't got no business doin' business today

Well I'm a gonna call up my boss and tell him I'm ill
I'm gonna tell him I'm home with a fever and chills
I don't usually lie but for your lovin' I will I need it so

Now we won't be diturbed because the phone's off the hook
And when it comes to lovin' baby you wrote the book
And I just saw that I want you look and that's all it took

Well I ain't got no business doin' business today...
(No he ain't got no business doin' business today)
Well the boys at the plant they're punchin' the clock
If they could see us now oh what a shock
But they'd do the same if they had what I got please don't stop

Well I ain't got no business doin' business today...
Well I ain't got no business doin' business today...

LEAVING LOVE ALL OVER THE PLACE

(Lathan Hudson) « © '77 Cross Keys Publishing, ASCAP »
The man who ran the motel said we couldn't spend the nights there anymore
Said it'd take a week to clean the room twenty-three and put new carpet on the floor
Said we harmed his reputation and what about the shame and disgrace
But we just never learned to love without leaving love all over the place

The lady at the rooming house served our eviction notice yesterday
While we were picking up our cloths she started screaming somebody's gonna pay
She said it takes a dozen carpenters to fix the broken bed and drapes
But we just never learned to love without leaving love all over ther place

Loving always came to us easy I know it always will
And we don' need nobody to roll us down the other side when we're over the hill

The mourners formed a single line as they filled by to pay their last respects
And they couldn't help but wonder how two lovers could break each others necks
And they wondered why the undertakers couldn't take the smiles from off their face
Then a preacher said dearly beloved why that sweet couple
They just never learned to love without leavin' love all over the place
No we never learned to love without leavin' love all over the place

WHEN YOUR PHONE DON'T RING

(Hank Cochran - Glenn Martin) « © '77 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Well tonight when you lay lonely in your king size bed
With a hunger inside you can feel
I'll be the empty spot laying next to you
And when your phone don't ring it'll be me

It'll be me not calling you crying like I used to do
Crawling on my hands and knees
It'll be me not on the phone begging let me come back home
And when your phone don't ring it'll be me

Well tonight it'll be my car not in your driveway
And you'll wonder where on earth I could be
It'll be my footsteps you don't hear in your hallway
And when your phone don't ring it'll be me

It'll be me not calling you crying like I used to do...
[ guitar ] Oh it'll be me not calling you crying like I used to do...
Yes when your phone don't ring it'll be me
