Upon first listen, High Mileage seems to have Alan Jackson visiting familiar territory. Jackson's well-earned stardom owes much to his warm vocal delivery, wrapped around gently rolling tunes about the simple things in life. High Mileage is no different, but this time the songs reflect some of the personal turmoil the singer was going through at the time. The Jackson-penned tunes "Gone Crazy," "Little Man," "Hurtin' Comes Easy" and "A Woman's Love" make it clear as to the type of soul-searching he was going through. Add to that the daring, spoken-word "I'll Go On Loving You" and the swinging "Right On the Money," and Jackson rewards the listener in the most disarming way. That personal touch, along with his winning traditional country stylings, make High Mileage one of his most emotional — and best — releases.

RIGHT ON THE MONEY
(Charlie Black - Phil Vassar)
« © '98 Blackwood Music, BMI / Fly Bridge Tunes, BMI /

Let's begin with the day I met her and how fast this good ole boy's world got better
The sky got bluer the grass got greener
In just the first few second after I'd first seen her
Like my favorite song on a new set of speakers
My best old jeans and my broke-in sneakers
A homerun run pitch floatin' right down the middle
The sweet music made when the bow hits the fiddle
She's right on the money she goes direct to my heart
When it comes to lovin' me she's everything I need bulls-eye perferct
She's right on the money
[ fiddle ]
She's no red lights when I've overslept
She's a three point jump-shotb thats's nothin' but net
A handful of aces when the dealer's done dealin'
And I'm forever on a roll that's how she got me feelin'
She's right on the money...
[ guitar - piano ]
She's the best cook that's ever melted cheese
I ain't much around the house but I aim to please
There's absolutely no reason to doubt her
When she says I wouldn't last ten minutes without her
She's right on the money...
She's right on the money...
[ piano - fiddle ]

GONE CRAZY
(Alan Jackson)
« © '98 WB Music, ASCAP / Yee Haw Music, ASCAP »
Here I am all alone again tonight in this old empty house
It's hard to learn what you don't think you need you can't live without
Never leave the sound of the telephone but ever since you left I've been gone
Gone carzy goin' out of my mind
I've asked myself the reasons at least the thousand times
Goin' up and down this hallway tryin' to leave the pain behind
Ever since you left I've been gone
[ steel + fiddle ]
I never saw your face this many times when you were really here
The things you said I never understood are now crystal clear
I never spent this much time at home but ever since you left I've been gone
Gone carzy...
Gone carzy...
I've been gone I've been gone I've been gone gone gone I've been gone

LITTLE MAN
(Alan Jackson)
« © '98 WB Music, ASCAP / Yee Haw Music, ASCAP »
I remember walking round the court square sidewalks
Lookin' in the windows at things I couldn't want
There's Johnson's hardware and Morgan's Jewelry and the ol' Lee Kings Apothecary
They were the little man the little man
I go back now and the stores are empty except an old coke sign dated 1950
Boarded up like they never existed or renovated and called historic district
There goes the little man there goes the little man
Now the court square's just a set of streets
That people go around but they seldom think
Bout the little man that built this town before the big money shut 'em down
And killed the little man oh the little man
He pump your gas and he cleaned your glass
One cold rainy night he fixed your flat
The new store came where you do it yourself
You buy a lotta ticket and food off the shelf
Forget the little man forget about that little man
He hung on there for a few more years
But he couldn't sell slurpees he wouldn't sell beer
Now the bank rents the station to a man down the road
And they sell velvet Elvis and second-hand clothes
There goes the little man there goes another little man
Now the court square's...
[ fiddle - steel ]
Now the stores are lined up in a concrete strip
You can buy the whole world in just one trip
And save apenny cause it's jumbo size they don't even realize
They're killin' the little man oh the little man
Now the court square's...
It's wasn't long ago when I was a child
An old black man came with his mule and his plow
He broke the ground where we grew our garden
Back before we'd all forgotten bout the little man the little man
Long live the little man God bless the little man

WHAT A DAY YESTERDAY WAS
(Charlie Craig - Mel Besher)
« © '98 Blackwood Music, BMI / Heart Of Hearts Music, BMI / Warner-Tamerlane Publishing, BMI »
Looking through these old photographs
Don't they bring some good mem'ries back
Some of them make us laugh some make us cry
Glad we've kept all of these souvenirs to prove that our love was here
Look at how happy we were pictures don't lie
If forever should end today and there's no tomorrow for us
What a day yesterday was
Here's one of us with you calm and cool look at me acting a fool
Here's one of us on the Ferris wheel at the fair
Hey haven't we had some fun the best may be yet to come
We may have a hundred years still left to share
But if forever should end today...
[ mandolin - steel ]
Let's close this book of photographs let's turn out the lights
And love for the moment as if it were the last
If forever should end today...
What a day yesterday was

HURTIN' COMES EASY
(Alan Jackson)
« © '98 WB Music, ASCAP / Yee Haw Music, ASCAP »
I've spent a lifetime looking for love just when I find it it comes undone
I've tried so hard to make love happen like some never endin' pattern
I end up on the sad side of the fun
Cause hurtin' comes easy hurtin' comes easy hurtin' comes easy for me
[ fiddle ]
Well I've seen people that got it made they've got someone and love looks great
But me I've been to every doctor I've tried it wild and I tried it proper
I always end up watchin' love walk away that's okay
Cause hurtin' comes easy hurtin' comes easy hurtin' comes easy for me
[ steel ]
I've gotten used to getting over and hopefully as I grow older
Love won't be so difficult to see but for me
Hurtin' comes easy. hurtin' comes easy hurtin' comes easy for me

I'LL GO ON LOVING YOU
(Kieran Kane)
« © '98 Kieran Kane Music, ASCAP »
When I look into your soft green eyes and when I see your delicate body
Revealed to me as you slip off your dress
I'm reminded that what I feel for you will remain strong and true
Long after the pleasures of the flesh
And I'll go on loving you I'll go on loving you I'll go on loving you
And be it the wind or the rain or the moon up in the sky
The spin of the earth or the changes in the tide
I don't know what brought us together what strange forces of nature
Conspired to constuct the present from the past
But I'll go on loving you I'll go on loving you I'll go on loving you
[ ac.guitar + strings ]
When I look into your soft green eyes...

ANOTHER GOOD REASON
(Harley L. Allen - Carson Chamberlain)
« © '98 Colt'n Twins Music, BMI / Blackwood Music, BMI /
Song Island Publishing, BMI / Songs Of PolyGram, BMI »
I woke up the other night lyin' on the floor
Right beside of someone I'd never seen before
She said my name's Juliet but Romeo you ain't
That's another good reason not to drink
That's another good reason not to drink when I'm sober I'm almost a saint
If I keep goin' on like this I'll end up like ole Hank
That's another good reason not to drink
I can't go see my best friend he said stay away
Just because of what I said on his wedding day
You oughta call her Sherman cause she looks just like a tank
That's another good reason not to drink
That's another good reason...
[ guitar ]
I'm gonna sue the city about that policeman
Last night as I left the bar he stepped right on my hand
He said are you drunk or blind I said let me think
That's another good reason not to drink
That's another good reason...
[ fiddle ]
That's another good reason...
Baby let me in I'm freezin' another good reason not to drink
[ piano - steel ]

WOMAN'S LOVE
(Alan Jackson)
« © '98 WB Music, ASCAP / Yee Haw Music, ASCAP »
I have felt it and I have held it I have known a woman's love
I have tasted and I have wasted a woman's love
And I know I'll never understand all the little things that make it grand
A woman's love
And I know I'll never come face to face with anything that takes the place
Of a woman's love
Well I have kissed it tried to resist it I have missed a woman's love
And I have hated taken for granted a woman's love
And I know I'll never understand...
[ guitar ]
Well I have needed and I have pleaded and I have lost a woman's love
And I have worshipped and I have cursed it a woman's love
And I know I'll never understand...
I adore it thank God for it a woman's love

DANCIN' ALL AROUND IT
(Carson Chamberlain - Brian Tabor - Michael White)
« © '97 Colt'n Twins Music, BMI / Tree Publishing, BMI /
Songs Of PolyGram, BMI / Caribbean Stud Music, ASCAP »
She said I don't usually dance this close to stangers
You know a girl can't be too careful with her heart
But I saw you and thought that you looked harmless
When you smile that way I'm not so sure you are
I said I don't usually come here for the dancin'
You can tell that by the way I move
When I saw you I thought that it was hopeless
And I just had to ask you for a dance or two
Somewhere in the stars it must be written
Girl we've got to take this chance that we've been given
If there's a heaven here on earth I think we found it
If this ain't love we're dancin' all around it
[ steel ]
Music stopped and we're still holdin' each other
This feels like the beginning of forever
Somewhere in the stars...
If this ain't love we're dancin' all around it
She said I don't usually dance this close to strangers

AMARILLO
(Alan Jackson)
« © '98 WB Music, ASCAP / Yee Haw Music, ASCAP »
The time has come you're really leavin' you always told me that you wanted to
I guess I never thought it would happen I guess I never really wanted it to
The world is calling you and you must answer
But you can take me with you in your dreams
If you ever get back to Amarillo in a shiny new car or worn out shoes
If you ever get back to Amarillo I'll be waitin' for you
[ fiddle ]
Your sister told me you were workin' at some office out in tinsel town
Don't forget about those who love you they'll be there for you if you get down
I believe in you and all you're after I hope you end up where you want to be
If you ever get back to Amarillo...
[ guitar - dobro ]
Thirty years now have gone by quickly I still think of you from time to time
My wife died early I've got children I'm happy and my health is fine
I often wondered if you found your freedom
I sometimes wondered if I should have gone
If you ever get back to Amarillo...
If you ever get back to Amarillo...
I'll be waitin' for you I'll be waitin' for you
