David Houston often sang in a lower register on his hits, so fans who are not intimately familiar with his catalog may not realize what a gorgeous tenor voice he has. On Golden Hymns, his first gospel album, the purity of his voice in its simple setting is very effective and even stirring. This album is much more conventional and traditional than David, Houston's modernized sacred album from 1969, and is ultimately less exciting for that reason. But if you prefer old-fashioned gospel music to revisionism laced with secular influences, Golden Hymns is the one to pick.

WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS
(Joseph Scrivens - Charles Converse - Sid Feller)
« © '18 Redwood Music, BMI »

What a friend we have in Jesus all our sins and grieves to bear
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer

Oh what peace we often forfeit of what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer

JUST A CLOSER WALK WITH THEE
(Traditional)
« © '49 Bridge Building Music, BMI »

I am weak but Thou art strong Jesus keep me from all wrong
I'll be satisfied as long as I walk dear Lord close to Thee

Just a closer walk with Thee grant it Jesus is my plea
Daily walking close to Thee let it be dear Lord let it be

When my feeble life is o'er time for me will be no more
Guide me gently safely o'er to Thy kingdom shores to Thy shores

Just a closer walk with Thee...

IN THE GARDEN
(Austin C. Miles - Robert Hebble)
« © '46 Word Music, ASCAP »

I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear the son of God discloses

And he walks with me and he talks with me and he tells me I am his own
And the joy we share as we tarry there none other has ever known

He speaks and the sound of his voice is so sweet the birds hush their singing
And the melody that he gave to me within my heart is ringing

And he walks with me...
And the joy we share as we tarry there none other has ever known

IF I COULD HEAR MY MOTHER PRAY AGAIN
(John W. Vaughn - James Rowe)
« © '22 Edward B Marks Music, BMI »

How sweet and happy seem those days of which I dream
When memory recalls them now and then
And with that rapture sweet my weary heart would beat
If I could hear my mother pray again

If I could hear my mother pray again if I could hear her tender voice as then
So glad I'd be with who means so much to me if I could hear my mother pray again
[ guitar ]
She used to pray that I on Jesus would rely and always walk the shining gospel way
So trusting still his love I'll seek that home above
Where I shall meet my mother some glad day

If I could hear...

WHERE WE'LL NEVER GROW OLD
(James C. Moore)
« © '59 Edward B Marks Music, BMI »

I have heard of a land on the faraway strand
Bhis a beautiful home of the soul
Built by Jesus on high there we never shall die
This the land where we'll never grow old

Never grow old never grow old in the land where we'll never grow old
Never grow old never grow old in the land where we'll never grow old

When our work here is done and the life's crown is won
And our troubles and trials are o'er
All our sorrows will end and our voices will blend
With the loved ones who've gone on before

Never grow old...

CHURCH IN THE WILDWOOD
(William S. Pitts)
« © '59 Edward B Marks Music, BMI »

There's a church in the valley by the Wildwood no lovelier place in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood as the little brown church in the vale

Come to the church in the Wildwood oh come to the church in the dale
No spot is so dear to my childhood as the little brown church in the vale
[ ac.guitar ]
How sweet on a bright Sunday morning to listen to the clear ringing bell
Its tones so sweetly are calling come to the church in the vale

Come to the church in the Wildwood...

CABIN IN THE CORNER OF GLORYLAND
(Traditional)
« © '67 Writer Share, PD »

(Lord build me a cabin in the corner of Gloryland)
Many years I've been looking for a place to call home
But I've failed here to find it so I must travel on
I don't care for fine mansions on earth sinking sand
Lord build me a cabin in the corner of Gloryland

Yes build me just a cabin in the corner of Gloryland
In the shade of a tree of life that it may ever stand
Where I can just hear the angels sing and shake Jesus hand
Lord build me a cabin in the corner of Gloryland
[ piano ]
I have many dear loved ones to help on this way
On the great final morning I can hear them all say
Come and join in our singing and play in our band
Lord build me a cabin in the corner of Gloryland

Yes build me just a cabin...
Lord build me a cabin in the corner of Gloryland

WHEN THEY RING THOSE GOLDEN BELLS
(Dion DeMarbelle - Archie Campbell)
« © '56 Fort Knox Music, BMI / Trio Music, BMI »

(When they ring those golden bells for you and me)
There's a land beyond the river that we call the sweet forever
And we only reach that shore by fate's decree
One by one we'll gain the portals then to dwell with thing immortals
When they ring those golden bells for you and me

Don't you hear the bells now ringing don't you hear the angels singing
This glory hallelujah jubilee
In that far off sweet forever just beyond the shining river
When they ring those golden bells for you and me
[ steel ]
When our days shall know the number when in death we'll sweetly slumber
When the king commands the spirit to be free
Never more with anguish laidin' we shall reach that lovely aimin'
When they ring those golden bells for you and me

Don't you hear the bells now ringing...

IN THE SWEET BY AND BY
(Sanford Bennett - John Theo Bartsch)
« © '58 Good News Broadcasting, BMI »

There's a land that is fairer than day and by faith we can see it apart
For the father waits over the way to prepare us a dwelling place there

In the sweet by and by we shall meet on that beautiful shore
In the sweet by and by we shall meet on that beautiful shore
[ piano ]
To a beautiful father above we shall offer our tribute of praise
For the glory as gift of his love and the blessing that hallow our days

In the sweet by and by...
We shall meet on that beautiful shore

OLD RUGGED CROSS
(George Bernard)
« © '13 Word Music, ASCAP »

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of sufferin' and shame
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners were slain

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it some day for a crown
[ steel ]
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true its shame and reproach gladly bear
Then he'll call me some day to my home far away where his glory forever I'll share

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross...
