Freddie Hart released albums at a rate of two per year throughout most of the '70s, which almost certainly accounted for his increasing reliance on outside songwriters. Although the liner notes to That Look in Her Eyes praise Hart's songwriting ability, he wrote or co-wrote only two songs. One of the two is "Why Lovers Turn to Strangers," Hart's final Top Ten hit, which shows that his ability was intact, if under-represented on the album. The title track just missed the Top Ten, but after this album Hart's hits began to taper off in size and frequency. The album contains several love songs of the sort for which Hart was known, but also Merle Haggard's "Can I Still Come Home" (written especially for Freddie) and the rueful "Paper Sack Full of Memories." That Look in Her Eyes is a middling album from the tail end of Hart's commercial peak, notable mainly for its pair of hits.

THAT LOOK IN HER EYES
(Ben Peters)
« © '76 Ben Peters Music, BMI »
She walks across the room and lets her long hair down
Hesitates before the mirror and then she turns around
And there stand the only real live angel ever found
And I love her I really do love her
Then I see she's got that look in her eyes
Lord she know I love that look in her eyes
And I might as well drop everything
Cause I'm no darn good for nothing otherwise
I can feel the warmth already begin
Long before she ever touches my skin
And I'm on my way back to heaven again
Cause she's got that look in her eyes
She makes the morning coffee and brings it to the bed
And lying there beside me she says wake up sleepy head
Lord knows it's hard to leave her I'd rather stay with her instead
Cause I love her I really do love her
Then I see she's got...
Then I see she's got...

LIVIN' ON LOVIN'
(Freddie Hart)

Livin' on lovin' starvin' to death
Every night I go to bed and dream about you
And I always wake up hungry hearted wanting you
It's got to where it hurts me everytime I take a breath
Livin' on lovin' if you call this livin'
Livin' on lovin' starvin' to death
Livin' on lovin' starvin' to death
You're the one I love I swear there's nobody else
Your reason for leavin' I've been blamin' myself
While I'm livin' on lovin' if you call this livin'
Livin' on lovin' starvin' to death
[ guitar ]
Livin' on lovin'...
Oh Lord I'm livin' on lovin' if you call this livin'
Livin' on lovin' starvin' to death

PART OF ME
(Bob Morris)
« © '76 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Part of me wants to say that it's all over
Most of me wants to try it one more time
Some of me still got undecided
I wish all of me could just make up my mind
Loving you is always so confusing
Sometimes it's almost more than I can take
I wish that I could let you go to blazes
But I am so afraid it would be a big mistake
You and I that's what we gave each other
At least that's what my heart thought from the start
Somehow your love just didn't grow like mine dear
And now it seems so very far apart
Part of me wants to say...
I wish all of me could just make up my mind

LORD DON'T SHE LOOK GOOD
(Bobby Goldsboro - Casey Kelly)
« © '76 Gosnell Music, BMI »
Now I know you've come to talk about my woman
Well there's nothing you can say that I don't know
And it's not hard to see that you're just jealous
So let me set you straight then you can go
She's only human and we've all done things we know we never should
But when I look at her I see all the love she has for me
And Lord don't she look good
I remember when you caught yourself my woman
Then I found out you cheated all along
And now you come around to criticize her
We'll now want you to say what's right or wrong
She's only human but she gives me the love you never would
After all you put me through now I see her next to you
And Lord don't she look good oh Lord don't she look good

WHY LOVERS TURN TO STRANGERS
(Freddie Hart - Bobby Fender)
« © '76 Gosnell Music, BMI »
As of lately we're not happy together
Everything is wrong that used to be so right
Pretty words like I love you we take for granted
We've even stopped kissing good morning and good night
We don't dress up anymore for each other
We don't hold hands beneath the table anymore
When romance dies the honeymoon's all over
When the new wears off that's when love walks out the door
Now I know why lovers turn to strangers
We've lost that so-good feeling that we had so much of
Yes I know why lovers turn to strangers
When they stop doing the things that make them fall in love
Now that we know what's the matter with each other
This love affair don't ever had to end
If we practice what we're preaching on each other
Then maybe strangers can be lovers once again
Now I know why lovers turn...

CAN I STILL COME HOME
(Merle Haggard)
« © '76 Tree Publishing, BMI »
If love hasn't died if I'm not to blame
And things there at home still be right
If I still have choice of where I want to go
Can I still come home to you tonight
Do you still wear my ring am I still on your mind
Do you still dream of holding me tight
Only you can say so darling let me know
Can I still come home to you tonight
Should I hang up the phone and just leave you alone
If I keep on moving on would that be right
Only you can say so darling let me know
Can I still come home to you tonight
Can I still come home to you tonight

PAPER SACK FULL OF MEMORIES
(Charley Church - Jimmie Morrison - Charles Owen)
« © '76 Gosnell Music, BMI »
She was a girl I loved and married seems like only yesterday
We thought we really had it made when it didn't work out that way
She's gone I'm alone I'm half a man I'm just a used-to-be
All I've got to live for is paper sack full of memories
Old love letters and worn-out photograps things left on love's first gleam
Pictures of us on our wedding day what a treasured sight to see
These personal private things I've locked away for my eyes alone to see
For all I've got left there is paper sack full of memories
This paper sack full of memories is all I have to cling to
A little bag full of faded love
We broke apart she locked my heart and she still holds the key
My future my past my whole wide world is paper sack full of memories
Memories memories

TILL I GET MY HEAD ON STRAIGHT
(Jack Lebsock)
« © '76 Gosnell Music, BMI »
I know how much I've hurt you it's happened oh so many times before
How I love to say that's over now and I won't ever hurt you anymore
But if you really love me and I know you do promise me your way
Till I get myself together until I get my head on straight
There's a demon in a bottle and it's found the way to ocupy my brain
And I'll be always good to you as long as it keeps flowing through my veins
But if you really love me...
Until I get my head on straight you know I couldn't love you like I want to
Until I get my head on straight you know I only take advantage of you
But if you really love me...
Till I get myself together till I get my head on straight
