That Cimarron, Emmylou Harris' ninth regular album, was assembled largely from recording sessions held for her previous couple of records is no necessary reflection on its quality. In fact, Cimarron was a typical effort for Harris, presenting her usual mix of country favorites, songs borrowed from the pop/rock arena, and singer/songwriter discoveries. Most prominent among the last category was Townes Van Zandt's "If I Needed You," released as a single three months ahead of the LP. From the pop mainstream, Harris borrowed Poco's "Rose of Cimarron" and Bruce Springsteen's "The Price You Pay." The recent T.G. Sheppard country number one hit "The Last Cheater's Waltz" and "Tennessee Waltz," best remembered for Patti Page's pop hit, were given respectful readings. And there was a lovely arrangement of the traditional ballad "Spanish Is a Loving Tongue." But the most memorable songs on the album were its two other country Top Tens, Karen Brooks and Hank DeVito's "Tennessee Rose" and Paul Kennerley's "Born to Run." On the whole, the album maintained the high standard Harris had set with her previous releases, and it deserved its 1982 Grammy nomination for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female. Though it matched the success of recent Harris LPs on the country charts, hitting the Top Ten and remaining listed for more than nine months, it did not enjoy as great a pop crossover sale and became Harris' first regular album since her 1975 breakthrough not to go gold. This was more indicative of the overall decline in country's crossover success than of any deficiency of the album itself; nevertheless, Harris' commercial success had crested.

Roll along roll on Rose of Cimarron dusty days are gone Rose of Cimarron
Shadows touch the sand and look to see who's standin'
Waitin' at your window watchin' will they ever show
Can you hear them calling you know they have fallen on
Campfires cold and dark that never see a spark burn bright
Roll along roll on Rose of Cimarron dusty days are gone Rose of Cimarron
Trails that brought them home echo names they've known
Four days high and lonely comin' to you only
You're the one they'd turn to the only one they knew who'd do
Ell her best to be around when the chips were down
Roll along roll on Rose of Cimarron dusty days are gone Rose of Cimarron

SPANISH IS A LOVING TONGUE
(C.B. Clark - M. Williams - B. Simon)
« © '81 Writer Share, PD »

Spanish is a loving tongue soft as music light as spray
Was a girl he learned it from living down Sonora way
He don't look much like a lover but he says her love words over
Mostly when he's all alone mi amor mi corazon
On the nights that he would ride she would listen for his spurs
Throw those big doors open wide raise them laughing eyes of hers
How those hours would get to flying all too soon he'd hear her sighing
In her little sorry tone mi amor mi corazon
[ mandolin ]
He ain't seen her since that night he can't cross the line you know
They want him for a gambling flight like as not it's better so
Yet he's always sort of missed her since that last sad night he kissed her
Lost his heart left her own adios mi corazon
Lost his heart left her own adios mi corazon

IF I NEEDED YOU
(Townes Van Zandt)
« © '72 Bughouse, ASCAP / Katie Bell Music, ASCAP »

[ with Don Williams ]

If I needed you would you come to me would you come to me for to ease my pain
If you needed me I would come to you I would swim the sea for to ease your pain

Well the night's forlorn and the morning's born
And the morning's born with the lights of love
And you'll miss sunrise if you close your eyes and that would break my heart in two
If I needed you...
[ guitar - fiddle ]
Baby's with me now since I showed her how to lay her lily hand in mine
Who could ill agree she's a sight to see a treasure for the poor to find
If I needed you...

(Clinton Codack - Wendy Special)
« © '81 Careers Music, BMI »

Another lonesome morning another long lonesome day
You'll have to live without him the morning seemed to say
Another lonesome morning you thought you didn't care
But morning breezes find you wishing he were there
Come way sing this same old song trying hard to please
And you hear the sounds that he used to love
Through the rustling of the leaves through the rustling of the leaves
[ guitar - dobro ]
Your losing him has taught you that wanted him to stay
And you now that all another lonesome morning brings
Is another lonesome day oh another lonesome day
Is another lonesome day is another lonesome day

LAST CHEATER'S WALTZ
(Sonny Throckmorton)
« © '77 Tree Publishing, BMI »

She's going to pieces when he walked in the door
She just has to see him she can't wait no more
Tonight she'll be with him no matter the cost
As the band plays the Last Cheater's Waltz
And uh huh huh don't they play lonely uh huh huh don't they play sad
And uh huh huh drink water only
See how he holds her as the band plays The Last Cheater's Waltz
[ fiddle - steel ]
He tells her he loves her as the music plays on
He tells her he needs her but someone's at home
The ball game's all over and she knows she's lost
As the band plays the Last Cheater's Waltz
And uh huh huh don't they play lonely uh huh huh don't they play sad
And uh huh huh three quarter only
See how he holds her as the band plays The Last Cheater's Waltz
And uh huh huh don't they play lonely...

BORN TO RUN
(Paul Kennerley)
« © '81 Irving Music, BMI »

Well I never did crawl and I never did toe the line
No man is master to me I ain't that kind
I just put on my travellin' shoes if you want to win you just can't lose
The time or stay behind
Well I was born to run to get ahead of the rest
To know that I wanted was to be the best
Just to feel free and be someone I was born to be fast I was born to run

I've taken chances the times I've made mistakes
But you don't get a thing unless you take the breaks
Living as dangerous as dynamite sure makes you feel nervous
But it makes you feel all right makes you feel all right
Well I was born to run...
[ dobro - guitar ]
Nobody gonna make me do the things their way
By the time you figure it out it's yesterday
It comes to he who waits I'm told
But I won't need it when I'm old and gray yeah I want it today
Well I was born to run...
I was born to run...

PRICE YOU PAY
(Bruce Springsteen)
« © '81 Bruce Springsteen Music, ASCAP »

You make up your mind you choose the chance you take
You ride to where the highway ends and the desert breaks
Out on through an open road you ride until the day
You learn to sleep at night with the price you pay
Now with their hands held high they reached out for the open skies
And then with their last breath they built the roads they would ride to their deaths
Driving on through the night unable to break away
From the restless pull of the price you pay
Oh the price you pay oh the price you pay
You can't walk away from the price you pay

Now they've come so far and they've waited so long
Just to end up caught in a dream where everything goes wrong
Where the dark of night holds back the light of the day
And you gotta stand and fight for the price you pay
Oh the price you pay...
[ guitar ]
Little girl down on the strand with that pretty little baby in your hands
Do you remember the story of the Promised Land
How he crossed the desert sands and could not enter the Chosen Land
On the banks of the river he stayed to face the price you pay
So let the games start you better run you little wild heart
You can run through all the nights and all the days
But just across the county line a stranger passin' through put up a sign
That counts so many fallen away to the price you pay
Oh the price you pay...
Oh the price you pay...

SON OF A ROTTEN GAMBLER
(Chip Taylor)
« © '73 Back Road Music, BMI / Blackwood Music, BMI »

And his love will be his vision and he'll take you where you stand
And will you stand your life by his and help the boy become a man
Will he be the son of his father his father the teacher
Teaching love and honesty and being his own man handler
Or the son of the son of a run-of-the-mill rotten rotten gambler

Will the devil be gettin' to you as you look back over what you've done
And what you've done was it for reason or for rhyme or was it just for fun
Will he be the son of his father...

Back on the road now you can lose your head
There ain't no kingdom for the gambling man
You know the road now and you've made your stand
When his eyes shine upon you shine upon you
Will he be the son of his father...
Back on the road now...
Will he be the son of his father...

(Pee Wee King - Redd Stewart)
« © '48 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

I was waltzing with my darling to the Tennessee Waltz
When an old friend I happened to see
I untroduced him to my darling and while they were dancing
My friend stole my sweetheart from me
I remember the night and the Tennessee Waltz only I know just how much I've lost
Yes I lost my little darling the night they were playing the beautiful Tennessee Waltz
[ fiddle ]
I remember the night...
Oh the beautiful Tennessee Waltz

TENNESSEE ROSE
(Karen Brooks - Hank DeVito)
« © '81 Babbling Brooks Publishing, BMI / Warner-Tamerlane Publishing, BMI »

It's a sweet dream that keeps me close to you dear
And it's a sad thing when we're apart I'm blue dear
And there are times now I thank the heavens up above
When I'm with the one that I love
Now there are diamonds that some men love to see
And they may shine but not bright enough for me
I wouldn't trade no the whole world dipped in gold
For a night with my Tennessee rose
Take this love I am giving for it's truly lasting kind
The gift I hold is believing that you will always be mine
[ guitar - fiddle ]
Take this love I am giving...
It's a sweet dream that keeps me close to you
And it's a sad thing when we're apart I'm blue
And there are times that only heaven knows how I love my Tennessee rose
I love my Tennessee rose

COLORS OF YOUR HEART
(Rodney Crowell)
« © '81 Happy Sack Music, ASCAP »

Colors of your heart like the colors on a pinwheel spinning around turning away
Colors of your eyes tell me you're changing
Tell me you're leaving and that it's too late to try
Diamonds and sand slide through your hands like you've done through mine
Did I look away or did I never say how I needed you
Colors of your heart like the places you're going
There's no way of knowing what did I do so wrong
[ guitar ]
Diamonds and sand slide through your hands like you've done through mine
Did I look away or did I never say how I needed you
Colors of your eyes like the blues in a bottle
They taking you down let them wash you away
