(Tom T. Hall)
« © '74 Hallnote Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
Country is sittin' on the back porch
Listen to the whippoorwills late in the day
Country is mindin' your business
Helpin' a stranger if he comes your way

Country is livin' in the city
Knowin' your people knowin' your kind
Country is what you'll make it
Country is all in your mind

Country is workin' for a living
Thinking your own thoughts lovin' your town
Country is teachin' your children
Find out what's right stand your ground

Country is a havin' the good times
Listen to the music singin' your part
Country is walking in the moonlight
Country is all in your heart
**********
Alright thank you thank you thank you very much
Why I thank you all very much and we'd like to thank RCA Victor records
And Mr Jerry Bradley and Mr Joe Galante for suggesting that we do this ablum
And we're glad you came out for this very special day for the Storytellers and me
And we're gonna sing you some songs that we've written down through the years
And kinda bring back some memories
I know a lot of you have been with us all down through these years
While we were pickin' and singin' these songs and writin' 'em
And I got to Nashville about twenty-one years ago
And that was before some of you were even born
But eh twenty-one years ago Roger Miller was ridin' a Honda
Mel Tillis couldn't get arrested eh what else was goin' on
Kris Kristofferson was a bartender Tanya Tucker was one year old
And eh Dolly Parton was a thirty-two B
Alright a long time ago

Well you folks have been nice to me and the Storytellers and our music down through the years
And here's one of the first songs not the very first but one of the first songs I recorded
And this a good tune about a job I used to have workin' in a cemetary or graveyard if you will
AndI made up this tune here and get a lot of requests for this travelin' around

2.

BALLAD OF FORTY DOLLARS

(Tom T. Hall)
« © '68 New Keys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI »
Well the man who preached the funeral said it really was a simple way to die
Oh he laied down to rest one afternoon and never opened up his eyes
Well they hired me and Fred and Joe to dig the grave and carry up some chairs
Oh it took us seven hours and I guess we must've drunk a case of beer

Lord I guess I oughta go and watch them put him down but I don't own the suit
And anyway when they start talkin' bout the fire and hell well I get spooked
So I'll just sit here in my truck and act like I don't know him when they pass
Oh anyway when they're all through I've got to go to work and mow the grass

Well here they come and who's that ridin' in that big ole shiny limousine
Oh look at all that chrome I do believe that that's the sharpest thing I've seen
Well that must belong to his great Uncle somebody said he owned a big ole farm
Oh when they get parked I'll mosey down and look it over that won't do no harm

Well that must be the widow in the car and would you take a look at that
Oh that sure is a pretty dress you know some women do look good in black
Well he's not even in the ground and they say that his track is up for sale
Oh they say she took it pretty hard but you can't tell too much behind a veil

Lord listen ain't that pretty when the bugler plays the military taps
Oh I think that when you's in the war they always hired and played a song like that
Well here I am and there they go and I guess you'd just call it my bad luck
Lord I hope he'll rest in peace but trouble is that fellow owes me forty bucks
**********
Why I thank you all very much you're a beautiful audience and I know many of you by name
And I'm lookin' out in the audience and seein' some faces
Eh that I have seen on my country music tours around America and around the world
And the past twenty-one years and they really look good
I don't know how you folks are gettin' so old and I'm stayin' so young

Well here's a song I wrote about a young man
Who inspired me to be a guitar picker and a singer and a song writer
And without this young man's help I wouldn't be here today
And it would be a crime if I didn't mention him and sing a song about him
But this is a young man who was an original
He did his own kind of pickin' and own kind of singin'
And maybe he was an inspiration to me in that regard too
But he died when I was about seven or eight years old
And he was only nineteen or twenty years old at the time
I sometimes wish that he had lived
And you could have had an opportunity to hear him pick and sing
But since he can't be here today we'd like to do this song that I wrote about him
It's a tribute to him

YEAR THAT CLAYTON DELANEY DIED

(Tom T. Hall)
« © '71 Hallnote Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
I remember the year that Clayton Delaney died
They said for the last two weeks that he suffered and cried
It made a big impression on me although I was a barefoot kid
They said he got religion at the end and I'm glad that he did

You know Clayton was the best guitar picker in our town
I thought he was a hero and I used to follow Clayton around
Clayton used to tell me son you better put that old guitar away
Ain't no money in it it'll lead you to an early grave

Well daddy said he drank a lot but I could never understand
I knew he used to picked up in Ohio with a five piece band
I often wondered why Clayton who seemed so good to me
Never took his guitar and made it down in Tennessee

Lord I guess if I'd admit it Clayton taught me how to drink booze
I can see him half stoned pickin' up the Lovesick Blues Lord
When Clayton died I made him a promise I was gonna carry on somehow
I'd give a hundred dollars if he could only see me now
Opryland USA

I remember the year that Clayton Delaney died
Nobody ever knew it but I went out in the woods and I cried
Oh I know there's a lotta big preachers that knew a lot more than I do
Could be that the good Lord likes a little picking too
Oh I hope so
I remember the year that Clayton Delaney died
**********
Thank you
Well I'm gonna accept that compliment of that great applause
On behalf of Clayton and myself
Well I have been as you all know I write books
And I've written three books
And my latest book is a novel called The Laughin Men of Woodmont Coves
And it's just a great novel didn't it Ann
It's got punctuation and everything in it
And not only do I love to write I love to read
And I've been reading here of late I have been reading
Roy Clark's Big Note banjo book
Now I don't know if you all have one of these or not
But it teaches you how to play the banjo
And up until today this was the greatest five string banjo tune in the world
I love this tune it's written by the legendary Earl Scruggs a good friend of mine
And eh if ya'll like this I send Roy his money for his book

FOGGY MOUNTAIN BREAKDOWN

(Earl Scruggs)

[ instrumental ] **********
Oh boy I'm gonna send Roy his money
I don't know I might send him a case of lemonade to boot
Well you know when I was a little boy listenin' to music
I used to listen to Flatt and Scruggs
And I used to listen to the Stanley Brothers the Osmond Brothers
And all those great bluegrass groups back there in
Don Reno and Red Smiley were favorites of mine
Back in this song was recorded just ater the second world war
And I don't know if ya'll remember that or not but it was in all the papers
And everything real big real big war
And eh we won it just in case you didn't hear
But I love this song
I used to sit around on a battery operated radio and listen to this tune
Then when I grew up I learned to pick it a little bit
And ya'll tolerate this song this is a good 'en right here

5.

I KNOW YOU'RE MARRIED (BUT I LOVE YOU STILL)

(Don Reno - Mack Magaha)
« © '56 Fort Knox Music, BMI / Trio Music, BMI »
The day I met you my heart spoke to me
And it said to love you through eternity
And not knowing that you were another's bride
I vowed I'll always be close by your side

You know I love you and I always will
I know you're married but I love you still

You broke a heart dear that would die for you
I'd give this world dear to belong to you
The game is over and I know I've lost
And a broken heart will have to pay the cost

You know I love you and I always will...
You know I love you and I always will...
**********
Aww isn't that a good tune that takes you back awhile now
You have to have been around country music a long time to remember that one
Well I thank you all very much hey you're a great group
I'm gonna tell you who the rest of the Storytellers are
There's Drew Sexton on the piano Kenny Sordisdrum on the fiddle
Leon Watson on the bass Jimmy Mull on lead guitar
And Terry Butram who is a distant relative of the legendary Pat Butram
Who ran around with Gene Autry for years
And one of the young men here who has been with me
Longer than any of the other Storytellers three days
No a good friend of mine a good songwriter and a great musician Mr Ray Edwards
would ya'll give the Storytellers a little round of applause there

They're really a good bunch of boys and these gentlemen have been with me a long time
And just this year we've been to a lot of foreign countries
We've been to Australia New Zealand Japan Ireland England New York
We've been in a lot of foreign countries this year
Well one of my favorite songwriters is my brother Hillman Hall
Who wrote Pass Me By for Johnny Rodriguez and a lot of good country and western songs
And when you get one of your favorite songwriters
And another one of your favorite songwriters together and they write a song
You really kind of get attached to it
And Hal Bynum one of the writers on eh what is that song about
Four hungry children and a crop in the fields what is that song
Lucille yeah that's the name of it Hal Bynum helped write Lucille
And Brother Hillman and Hal Bynum got together and wrote this song
Two really good songwriters and I'd like to do one of their tunes for you
This is a good one too it's called Please Don't Tell Ruby Where I'm At

6.

DON'T TELL RUBY WHERE I'M AT

(Hillman Hall - Hal Bynum)
« © '83 Andite Invasion, BMI / New Lionshed Music, BMI »
If you're ever down in Dallas drinkin' in the Palace
Say hello to Ruby she's an old friend of mine
You just wait until she's able and she'll come sit at your table
Hug your neck learn your name have a little glass of wine

It was 1967 we were both in search of heaven
She was young and pretty and I was hard and lean
She begged me not to leave her but I'd done caught the fever
And I told her that ole heaven ain't a damn thing but a dream

Listen when she talks of things we used to do
Believe her when she speaks of old friends we once knew
When she mentions me I'll almost have to make the bet
She'll say good Lord I wish we'd never met
Oh don't you dare tell Ruby where I'm at

You know I lit out from Texas I was young and restless
I though guns and whiskey were the makin's of a man
I had a future waitin' for me workin' for the state of Georgia
I always think of Dallas when I hear that jail door slam

Tell her no when she asks if I'm comin' down
Lie and tell her Dallas ain't my kind of town
Go ahead and love her I'll forgive you that
But if Ruby does not love me I will eat my hat
But don't you dare tell Ruby where I'm at

See Ruby thinks I'm in Virginia some place
Drivin' one of them big trucks that go
Swoosh swoosh she don't know where I'm at
And don't tell her please
**********
Well I wanna sing this song I wrote this song for my wife
I've been married to the same woman
I've been in love with the same woman for twenty years
And if my wife if finds out about it she'll kill me
I'll tell you that

No that's an old joke
But Miss Dixie and I who many of you know
Have been married well somewhere around twenty years something like that
And on occasion I have been a bad boy to say the least
That's nice of you you should have been there when I came in
And it's very fortunate that a man could grow up and be successful in what he does
And marry a person with whom he is happy
And I wrote this song for Miss Dixie and I'll sing it for her now
For all of you

YOUR MAN LOVES YOU HONEY

(Tom T. Hall)
« © '77 Hallnote Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
I have my golf club's on my shoulder when you saw me first today
Wearin' my old army sweater that you thought you threw away
And when you saw me standin' there you shook your head and sighed
When you saw I'd bought a sixpack I thought you were gonna cry

But your man loves you honey I don't know what else to say
Your man loves you honey but you can't change my ways

Now before you say you're angry you remember what I did
Went to church with you last Sunday took your mama and the kids
Sat right up and heard the preachin' even wore my Christmas tie
I'm not much on organ music 5-strings banjo's more my style

Your man loves you honey...

You should have had a knight in armor and a castle fair
Not some restless cowboy faded jeans and shaggy hair
I can't make it babe without you you know that it's true
Keep me around for laughs well I've been good for one or two

Your man loves you honey...
I'll keep on tryin'
**********
Aww what a beautiful audience
Well you know I'd like to take this group on the road with me
And I'd also like to take this audience would really simplify my life wouldn't it
Just have a big crowd and a nice group everywhere you go
Well well I want I know you've been a great audience and I hate to impose on you
But I want you to sing a song with me now and I wanna tell you that
Well you know of course that this program is being recorded
And will probably be re-broadcast to our arm forces fighting in Fort Knox Kentucky
Or in Louisville down on 4th street
But I want you all to sing this song with me and you have a very simple part in it now
And if you can remember this it's really gonna sound great
Your part is makes him feel mellow
Can you remember that
Now I want you to sing out real loud
And exuberant and and enthusiastic and everything
And the Lea Jane singers are gonna kind of lead the vocal group
They'll sing with us too
And don't sing till I point at you cause we'll have to stop and start all over
And we'll be singin' this song all week
Here we go

I LIKE BEER

(Tom T. Hall)
« © '75 Hallnote Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
Oh in some of my songs I have casually mentioned
The fact that I like to drink beer
This little song is more to the point
Roll out the barrel and lend me your ears

I like beer it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer oh it helps me unwind
And sometimes it makes me feel mellow
(Makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey's too rought champaigne costs too much
And vodka puts my mouth in gear
Aw this little refrain should help me explain
As a matter of fact I like beer
(He likes beer)

Well my wife often frowns when we're out on the town
And I'm wearing a suit and a tie
She's sipping vermouth she thinks I'm uncute
While I yell as the waiter goes by

Hey I like beer it makes me a jolly good fellow...

Aw last night I dreamed that I passed from the scene
And I went to a place so sublimed
All the water was clear tasted like beer
And then they turned it all into wine

Hey I like beer it makes me a jolly good fellow...
While it's handy I want these guys to sing at my funeral
Yes we like beer (yes we like beer)
**********
Now the audience is gonna disappear they get thirsty they won't come back
Well I wanna sing this song here
I love this song I wrote this song several years ago
And there's some songs that kinda hang around
And you remember them from time to time
And I'm so grateful to the disc jockeys of America
Because as I travel across this country and around the world
Once in awhile on the radio I will hear this song
And it reminds me that a good song stays around a long time
And this was never a single record was never a hit record
But I'm so happy that I keep hearin' it from time to time
It means a lot to a songwriter and I suppose to a singer
And we'd like to do this song for you

I TOOK A MEMORY TO LUNCH

(Tom T. Hall)
« © '70 Newkeys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI »
Today the weather was so pretty
At noon I went out for a stroll
I walked and did some window shopping
And met someone I used to know

The years have been kind to her beauty
When I first saw her my heart jumped
Tonight if I seem disenchanted
I took a memory to lunch

We sat and talked about the old days
With misty teardrops in our eyes
And reconfirmed an old suspection
The past grows old but never dies

The charm that draws two hearts together
By four o'clock was just too much
The days and years we had between us
Were down to just two coffee cups

You can't relieve life in an hour
The afternoon kept wearin' on
I'm sorry that I'm late for dinner
I took a memory to lunch
**********
Thank you very much thank you well I love those old songs
Well you know I have recorded several songs
A couple of albums for little children
And I really like little children my mother had some
And everywhere I go I used to go pickin' and singin' at country music shows
And I would see the kids come down to the front row of the shows
And all I had to sing for them was I Like Beer
And I like that song but I thought it would be nice if I had some other song
That I could sing for them
So I wrote two albums of childrens songs
And I've really made a lot of friends out of a lot of beautiful little people
And I feel very blessed about that and very happy about it
Because children of course are the future of country music
And they're the future of America
And I'm glad to have 'em for friends because when they take over they're gonna like me
I don't know what they'll think about the rest of you folks but they'll like me
I'm gonna sing this song this is my most requested children's song here
And if any of you children wanna sing along on this well you're perfectly welcome

SNEAKY SNAKE

(Tom T. Hall)
« © '74 Hallnote Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
One two three four

Boys and girls take warning if you go near the lake
Keep your eyes wide open look for sneaky snake
Now maybe you won't see him and maybe you won't hear
But he'll sneak up behind you and steal all your root beer

And then sneaky snake goes dancing wiggling and kissing
Sneaky snake goes dancing giggling and hissing
I don't like ole sneaky snake he laughs too much you see
When he goes wiggling through the grass tickles his underneath

Well ole sneaky snake drinks root beer and he just makes me sick
When he is not dancing he looks just like a stick
Now he doesn't have any arms or legs and you cannot see his ears
And while we are not looking and he's stealing all of our beer

And then sneaky snake goes dancing wiggling and kissing...
**********
Thank you aww thank you music lovers
Well I'm always glad when people bring their children out to my shows
And I try never to embarrass them or confuse them
Lord knows they're confused enough and I am too for that matter
But I love to sing this song I had a psychiatrist friend Nat Winston
A good friend of mine who is a psychiatrist
And we talked about you get up in the morning
And you make a list of all of your little troubles
and the list is never as long as you might imagined it to be
And but you do you write down these little pet peeves
Things you really don't care anything about like parsley you know
But I got up one morning and I thought well that's kind of a negative thing to do
Write down things you don't like
So I got up one morning and wrote down a list of all the things that really make me happy
And eh you my friends and country music fans are on that list
And so I'd like to sing this song for you

11.

I LOVE

(Tom T. Hall)
« © '73 Hallnote Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
I love little baby ducks old pickup trucks
Slow moving trains and rain
I love little country streams sleep without dreams
Sunday school in May and hay
And I love you too

I love leaves in the wind pictures of my friends
Birds of the world and squirrels
I love coffee in a cup little fuzzy pupps
Bourbon in a glass and grass
And I love you too

I love honest open smiles kisses from a child
Tomatos on the vine and onions
I love winners when they cry losers when they try
Music when it's good and life
And I love you too
**********
Aww thank you aww you're beautiful
Well I've sung this song all over the world
And eh I would like to thank Cam Mullins
And the folks from the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and there abouts
Cam has been with me a long time ever since I started makin' records
And he's conducting the strings tonight and he's a good friend of mine
And he's a good golfer lies about his handicapp but you can't do everything right
And the Lea Jane Singers
We've made a lot of records togetherand they're great folks
And it's always a pleasure to see them lookin'
See them all cleaned up with a shower and everything I don't know a special night
And the Storytellers who have been with me on many a mile down the road
And this is the song that sorta got me off the streets I guess
This is the song that has some songs come and go
And this one has been around awhile
And I thank God for this old gentleman in Miami Beach Florida
Who shared his philosophy of life with me and I'd like to share it with you

OLD DOGS CHILDREN AND WATERMELON WINE

(Tom T. Hall)
« © '72 Hallnote Music, BMI / Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »
How old do you think I am he said I said well I didn't know
He said I turned sixty five about eleven months ago
And I was sittin' in Miami pouring blended whiskey down
When this old grey black gentleman was cleanin' up the lounge

Well there wasn't anyone around cept this old man and me
And the guy who run the bar was watching Ironside on TV
And uninvited he sat down and he opened up his mind
On old dogs and children and watermelon wine

Ever had a drink of watermelon wine he saked
Well he told me all about it though I didn't answer back
He said there ain't but three things in this world that's worth a solitary dime
But old dogs and children and watermelon wine

He said women think about theyselves well when menfolk ain't around
Well and friends are hard to find when they discover that you're down
He said son I tried it all when I was young and in my natural prime
Now it's old dogs and children and watermelon wine

He said you know old dogs they care about you even when you make mistakes
God bless little children while they're still too young to hate
Now when he moved away I found my pen and copied down that line
Bout old dogs and children and watermelon wine

Well I had to catch a plane up to Atlanta that next day
I left for my room I saw him pickin' up my change
And that night I dreamed in peaceful sleep of shady summertime
Of old dogs and children and watermelon wine
