This is one of the mini-LPs RCA, and several other labels, experimented with in the '80s. While Gill had been on the musical scene for several years, including a stint with Pure Prarie League, this is a nice sampler to display Gill's skills as both a performer and a writer.

You better turn me loose turn me loose you know that I can't stay
You better turn me loose turn me loose you know I'll make it anyway

Why don't you tell me just what's going on
Both of us lyin' here and we both know it's wrong
So why don't you let me why don't you leave it alone
And don't keep hanging on to a love that's dead and gone
You better turn me loose...

Well you can't see it's over that's really a shame
Well our love didn't make it but no one's to blame
So why don't we say goodbye why don't we just say we're through
And I'll be on my way and I'll get by without you
You better turn me loose...
[ guitar ]
You better turn me loose...
Turn me loose you know I'll make it anyway

OH CAROLINA
(Mark D. Sanders - Jim Elliott - Randy Albright)
« © '83 Milene Music, ASCAP »

The sunrise through the evergreens another day is born
The hills take on a golden glow a Carolina morn
I used to see you in her eyes now I just got to know
Oh Carolina how could you let her go
Oh Carolina if I'd only know oh Carolina I would have never gone

I thought the beauty of your hills would hold her here for me
I never dreamed while I was gone you'd ever set her free
I trusted you with all my heart and the only love I've known
Oh Carolina how could you let her go
Oh Carolina if I'd only know oh Carolina I would have never gone
Oh Carolina if I'd only know oh Carolina I would have never gone
I would have never gone

DON'T SAY THAT YOU LOVE ME
(Emory Gordy - Vince Gill)
« © '83 Poulding County Publishing, BMI / Tree Publishing, BMI / Benefit Music, BMI »

I'm gonna tell you right up front so you will understand
I ain't gonna waste your time cause I might not be your man
We won't go makin' promises cause you know it just ain't right
A promise is a promise girl and tonight is just tonight
Tonight is just tonight
Don't say that you love me if it don't feel right
Don't say that you love me just hold me tonight

There ain't no need for broken hearts I know in time they mend
Any fool can fall in love it's so easy to pretend
Don't tell me I'm the only one if it doesn't mean a thing
Let's take tonight for what it's worth and see what tomorrow brings
See what tomorrow brings
Don't say that you love me...
[ guitar ]
Don't say that you love me...

WAITIN' FOR YOUR LOVE
(Vince Gill)
« © '83 Benefit Music, BMI »

Well I've been spendin' all my spare time sittin' home alone
Listenin' for the front door and starin' at the phone
Ever since that night in Texas you're all that's in my brain
And long distance ain't the answer my little heart can't stand the strain
I'm a waitin' for your love waitin' every night and day
Hopin' you'll come by and get me baby take me far away
I'm a waitin' for your love girl I ain't afraid to say
That you're all I ever wanted so come and steal my heart away

Well I was never one to beg you know I always played it cool so cool
But you've got me on my knees now you're the exception to the rule
Well there ain't no turnin' back you know I'm too far gone
So I keep the front door open and keep the porch light on
I'm a waitin' for your love...
I'm a waitin' for your love...
You're all I ever wanted so come and steal my heart away

HALF A CHANCE
(Vince Gill)
« © '83 Benefit Music, BMI »

Give me half a chance to make you love me
Give me half a chance to make you stay
Give me half a chance before you leave me
Half a chance before you turn and walk away

I'm holding on just like you told me I put my heart right on the line
You know your love it really sold me but I never had the chance to make you mine
Just give me half a chance...
[ guitar ]
You said you'd never say it's over well I guess my heart can't beat your pride
You said I'll always be your lover but you're gone and my tears still haven't dried
Just give me half a chance...
Half a chance before you turn and walk away

VICTIM OF LIFE'S CIRCUMSTANCES
(Delbert McClinton)
« © '75 Songs Of Universal, BMI »

It's six-o-five a.m. on Sunday morning
And I'm supposed to left for Memphis late last night
Well I stopped at one of them old highway places
Because I did I sleep in Tyrone County jail tonight
Well I started out the night with good intentions
But I ended up gettin' sideways drinkin' wine
Well the last thing I remember we were roaring
Then something hit my head and knocked me from my conscious mind
And I'm a victim of life's circumstances
Well I was raised around barrooms and Friday night dancers
Singin' them old country songs
And half the time I end up some place I don't belong
[ guitar ]
I said jailer hey what you've got me charged with
He looked at me and halfway closed one eye
He said he mean to say you don't remember
Cuttin' up some honky with that bone handled knife
And I'm a victim of life's...
Well I'm a victim of life's...
[ guitar ]

TILL THE BEST COMES ALONG
(Vince Gill)
« © '83 Benefit Music, BMI »

Now I ain't the best looking guy in the world and I ain't got much money at all
But when our eyes met I never forget that for you I could easily fall
So why don't we just keep on dancing while the band sings an old country song
Well I won't be depressed if I ain't the best but will I do till the best comes along
[ guitar - steel ]
I ain't got a mansion on some mountain top and I ain't got no long limousine
But I've got a heart as warm as the sun and I could love you like you've never seen
So why don't we just keep on dancing...
No I won't be depressed if I ain't the best but will I do till the best comes along

LIVIN' THE WAY I DO
(Vince Gill)
« © '83 Benefit Music, BMI »

Well I've got to stop livin' the way I do and give my heart back to you
All those nights away from home caused my lonely heart to roam
Now I've got start livin' the way I do

I've spent a lifetime hurting you and I expect someday you'll say we're through
It ain't two late for me to change so please dono't write our final page
Still I've got to stop livin' the way I do
I've gone from honeymoons to heartaches from faithful love to a fool
From hangin' out in honky tonks with any girl but you
Well I've got to stop livin'...

I've said all that I can say but you turned and walked away
It's too late to stop livin' the way I do
