Vince Gill had already enjoyed country success before 1992's I Still Believe in You, but it was the album's four number one singles and almost immediate platinum status that assured the honey-voiced performer's fame and staying power. Gill's delivery is as smooth as the glass surface of a secluded mountain swimming hole, shifting from promise and pain to love and loneliness with easy charm and the occasional touch of his high lonesome background ("No Future in the Past," "Say Hello"). The title track fairly glows with slow-cooked soul, while "Don't Let Our Love Slip Away" nods along on a late-'70s contemporary country vibe. The whole affair is so gosh darn flawless it's impossible not to like. After all, how can you fault a guy with mainstream marketability who's also a talented session guitar player, songwriter, and the owner of one of Nashville's best voices?

DON'T LET OUR LOVE START SLIPPIN' AWAY
(Pete Wasner - Vince Gill)
« © '92 Songs Of Universal, BMI / Uncle Pete Music, BMI / Benefit Music, BMI »

We've been up all night long tryin' to solve the problem till it's almost dawn
Ain't no time for sleeping if our love is everything
Cause I ain't giving up you ain't giving in
Don't let our love start slippin' love start slippin' away
Cause the life we have been livin' gets harder every day
Don't let our love start slippin' love start slippin' away

A wounded love walks a real thin line and no communication will kill it every time
So open up your heart baby we can work it out
We got the kind of love people dream about
Don't let our love start slippin'...

It's past the point of right or wrong we'll find a way to just hold on
[ guitar ]
Don't let our love start slippin'...
Don't let our love start slippin' love start slippin' away

NO FUTURE IN THE PAST
(Carl Jackson - Vince Gill)

I lie here tonight in the darkness I've never felt so alone
Tomorrow I'll wake up still lonesome cause things haven't changed since you've gone
You walked out with angry words spoken your leaving cut right to the bone
I'll pick up the pieces you have broken find the strength to go on
I still remember when my arms once held her how long do old memories last
Why can't I forget it can't I admit it there ain't no future in the past
[ steel - piano ]
I still remember...
Why can't I forget it can't I admit it there ain't no future in the past

NOTHING LIKE A WOMAN
(Reed Nielsen - Vince Gill)
« © '92 Longitude Music, BMI / Benefit Music, BMI »

Oh there's nothing like a woman when you're all alone
No there's nothing like a woman to make a man come home
She's always there to understand the little boy inside of the man
Oh there's nothing like a woman nothin' at all

She knows when to hold you and when to leave you alone
She's there to console you when everything in the world's gone wrong
She lights a candle and gets that look in her eye
And she's says boy can you handle staying up with me all night

Oh there's nothing like a woman when you're all alone
No there's nothing like her lovin' to make a man come home
She's always there to understand the little boy inside of the man
No there's nothin' like a woman nothing at all
[ guitar ]
Oh there's nothing like a woman...
She's always there to understand...

TRYIN' TO GET OVER YOU
(Jim Weatherly - Vince Gill)
« © '92 Bright Leaf Music, ASCAP / Benefit Music, BMI »

You could have given me a million reasons why but it wouldn't change a thing
You said it all when you said goodbye and you took off your wedding ring
I've been tryin' to get over you I've been spendin' time alone
I've been tryin' to get over you but it'll take dyin' to get it done

All my friends keep tryin' to fix me up they say I need somebody new
When it comes to love I've all but givin' up cause life don't mean nothing without you
I've been tryin' to get over you...
[ guitar ]
I've been tryin' to get over you...

SAY HELLO
(Pete Wasner - Vince Gill)
« © '92 Songs Of Universal, BMI / Uncle Pete Music, ASCAP / Benefit Music, BMI »

I walk down these lonely streets and try to find you
In all the same old places we used to go
And the old friends that I meet still ask about you
And they tell me if I see you say hello
Say hello to the arms that used to hold me
Hold me close when those chilly winds would blow
Say hello with the lips that used to kiss me and whisper in my ear I love you so
[ steel ]
I remember the night when I first met you I knew that I could ever let you go
Now I can't find a way to forget you I'd give anything to hear you say hello
Say hello to the arms...
I'd give anything to hear you say hello

ONE MORE LAST CHANCE
(Gary Nicholson - Vince Gill)
« © '92 Cross Keys Publishing, ASCAP / Benefit Music, BMI »

She was standing at the front door when I came home last night
A good book in her left hand and a rollin' pin in the right
She said you've come home for the last time with whiskey on your breath
If you don't listen to my preaching boy I'm gonna have to beat you half to death
Give me just a one more last chance before you say we're through
I know I drive you crazy baby it's the best that I can do
We're just some good ol' boys a making noise I ain't running round on you
Give me just a one more last chance before you say we're through

At first she hid my glasses because she knows that I can't see
She said you ain't going nowhere boy until you spend a little time with me
Then the boys called from the honky tonk said there's a party going on down here
Well she might've took my car keys but she forgot about my old John Deere
So give me just a one more last chance...
[ guitar ]
Give me just a one more last chance...
Give me just a one more last chance before you say we're through

UNDER THESE CONDITIONS
(Max D. Barnes - Vince Gill)
« © '92 Hard Scratch Music, BMI / Irving Music, BMI / Benefit Music, BMI »

I know we're both married yet we're both alone
He's always working and she's never home
If we got together it would be so good
But under these conditions I don't think we should
We both have children they need us around
Although we're both willing we can't let 'em down
As much as we want to you know where we stand
Under these conditions I don't think we can
We love each other but it's only in dreams
But we have to get used to the fact it's just one of those things
We'll never know how this love could feel
Under these conditions we never will
Under these conditions we never will

PRETTY WORDS
(Don Schlitz - Vince Gill)
« © '92 New Don Songs, ASCAP / BMG Songs, ASCAP / Benefit Music, BMI »

I've seen the way he cast his spell he's gonna hurt you I can tell
Just to prove that he can be your lover
He's gonna turn on that charm tonight he'll wrap you in his arms
Tomorrow he will leave you for another
Pretty is as pretty does that's how it is and always was
Pretty words are all he's giving you
And when he whispers in the dark watch out he's gonna break your heart
Pretty words won't make your dreams come true
Just pretty words just pretty words

In the morning you will find that you were just the next in line
There's nothing I can do that's gonna stop you
Before you go just let me say I'd never treat your love that way
I'll be here long after he's forgot you
Pretty is as pretty does...
[ guitar ]
Pretty is as pretty does...
Just pretty words just pretty words

LOVE NEVER BROKE ANYONE'S HEART
(Jim Weatherly - Vince Gill)
« © '92 Bright Leaf Music, ASCAP / Benefit Music, BMI »

You say your heart has been broken and it's taking forever to mend
And it's left you even more certain that you'll never love again
A long time ago someone told me it's not love that causes the pain
Whenever a heart has been shattered it's losing of love that's to blame
Love never broke anyone's heart it never left anyone scarred
It's not really love if it tears you apart love never broke anyone's heart
[ fiddle - guitar ]
I know your feelings are tender and you're so afraid they won't heal
I'll prove to you love doesn't hurt you and I'll show you how true love should feel
Love never broke anyone's heart...
It's not really love if it tears you apart love never broke anyone's heart

I STILL BELIEVE IN YOU
(John B. Jarvis - Vince Gill)
« © '92 Instepctor Barlow Music, ASCAP / Benefit Music, BMI »

Everybody wants a little piece of my time but still I put you at the end of the line
How it breaks my heart to cause you this pain to see the tears you cry falling like rain
Give me the chance to prove and I'll make it up to you
I still believe in you with a love that will always be
Standing so strong and true baby I still believe in you and me

Somewhere along the way I guess I just lost track
Only thinking of myself never looking back
For all the times I've hurt you I apologize
I'm sorry it took so long to finally realize
Give me the chance to prove and I'll make it up to you
I still believe in you...
Baby I still believe in you...
