On this album, Flatt & Scruggs cool their famous "overdrive" to turn in a collection of relaxed, almost dreamy adaptations of Carter tunes. Maybelle herself plays autoharp on the sessions, although it would have been nice if she had sung too, especially since the cover prominently displays her name and picture. This is a pleasant record, though, highlighted by the duo's original recording of "You Are My Flower," a song which they played throughout their career..

(A.P. Carter)

There's a dark and a troubled side of life there's a bright and a sunny side too
Though you meet with the darkness and strife the sunny side may also find you
Keep on the sunny side always on the sunny side keep on the sunny side of life
It will help us everyday it will brighten all the way if we keep on the sunny side of life
[ ac.guitar + autoharph ]
All the storms and its pury broke today crashing hopes that we cherished so dear
Clouds and storms will in time pass away the sun again will shine bright and clear
Keep on the sunny side...
[ ac.guitar ]
Let us greed with the song of hope each day though the moments be cloudy or fair
Let us trust at the Saviour old way who keep up everyone in his care
Keep on the sunny side...

FOGGY MOUNTAIN TOP
(A.P. Carter)

If I was on some foggy mountain top I'd sail away to the west
I'd sail all around this whole wide world to the girl I love the best
[ autoharph ]
If I had listened to what mama said I would not have been here today
A lyin' around this old jailhouse just weepin' my sweet life away
If I was on some foggy mountain top...
[ banjo ]
She caused me to weep she caused me to moan she caused me to leave my home
Oh that lonesome pine and those good ole times I'm on my way back home
If I was on some foggy mountain top...

You can hear me yelling Morning Star running on the street
Got no hat upon my head no shoes upon my feet

Never mind sir how I look don't look at me and frown
I sell the morning papers sir my name is Jimmy Brown
I'm awful cold and hungry sir my clothes is mighty thin
Wander bout from place to place my daily bread to win
[ ac.guitar ]
My father died a drunkard sir I've heard my mother say
I am helping mother sir as I journey on my way
My mother always tells me sir I've nothing in the world to lose
I'll get a place in heaven sir to sell the Gospel News
[ autoharph ]
I sell the morning papers sir...

HOMESTEAD ON THE FARM
(A.P. Carter)
« © '61 Peer International, BMI »
Well I wonder how the old folks are at home
I wonder if they'll miss me when I'm gone
I wonder if they pray for the boy who went away
And left his dear old parents all alone
Now you can hear the catlle lowing in the lane
You could almost see the fields of blue grass canes
You could almost hear them cry as they kissed their boy goodbye
I wonder how the old folks are at home
[ autoharph ]
Just the village and the homestead on the farm
And the mother's love there to cheer you from all harm
A sweetheart brave and true a place you love so dear
Just the village and the homestead on the farm
Now you can hear the catlle...

WORRIED MAN BLUES
(A.P. Carter)
« © '59 Peer International, BMI »
I went across the river I lay down to sleep
I went across the river I lay down to sleep
When I woke up had shackles on my feet
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
It takes a worried man to sing a worried song
I'm worried now but I won't be worried long
[ fiddle ]
Twenty one links of chain around my leg
Twenty one links of chain around my leg
And on each link is initial of a man
It takes a worried man...
[ banjo ]
If anyone should ask you who could sing this song
If anyone should ask you who could sing this song
Just say that I'll sing it all day long
It takes a worried man...
