lp discography - covers & lyrics

Balance is the key element of the Eagles' self-titled debut album, a collection that contains elements of rock & roll, folk, and country, overlaid by vocal harmonies alternately suggestive of doo wop, the Beach Boys, and the Everly Brothers. If the group kicks up its heels on rockers like "Chug All Night," "Nightingale," and "Tryin'," it is equally convincing on ballads like "Most of Us Are Sad" and "Train Leaves Here This Morning." The album is also balanced among its members, who trade off on lead vocal chores and divide the songwriting such that Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner all get three writing or co-writing credits. (Fourth member Don Henley, with only one co-writing credit and two lead vocals, falls a little behind, while Jackson Browne, Gene Clark, and Jack Tempchin also figure in the writing credits.) The album's overall balance is worth keeping in mind because it produced three Top 40 hit singles (all of which turned up on the massively popular Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975) that do not reflect that balance. "Take It Easy" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling" are similar-sounding mid-tempo folk-rock tunes sung by Frey that express the same sort of laid-back philosophy, as indicated by the word "easy" in both titles, while "Witchy Woman," a Henley vocal and co-composition, initiates the band's career-long examination of supernaturally evil females. These are the songs one remembers from Eagles, and they look forward to the eventual dominance of the band by Frey and Henley. But the complete album from which they come belongs as much to Leadon's country-steeped playing and singing and to Meisner's melodic rock & roll feel, which, on the release date, made it seem a more varied and consistent effort than it did later, when the singles had become overly familiar.

TAKE IT EASY

(Glenn Frey - Jackson Browne) « © '72 Swallow Turn Music, ASCAP »
Well I'm runnin' down the road tryin' to loosen my load
I've got seven women on my mind
Four that wanna own me two that wanna stone me
One says she's a friend of mine
Take it easy take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand and take it easy

Well I'm a standin' on a corner in Winslow Arizona such a fine sight to see
It's a girl my lord in a flat-bed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me
Come on baby don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me
We may lose and we may win though we may never be here again
So open up I'm climbing in so take it easy
[ guitar ] Well I'm a runnin' down the road tryin' to loosen my load
Got a world of trouble on my mind
Looking for a lover who won't blow my cover she's so hard to find
Take it easy take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy
Come on baby don't say maybe
I gotta know of your sweet love is gonna save me
[ banjo ] Oh we got it easy we oughta take it easy

WITCHY WOMAN

(Don Henley - Bernie Leadon) « © '72 Cass County Music, BMI / Likely Story Music, ASCAP » »
Raven hair and ruby lips sparks fly from her finger tips
Echoed voices in the night she's a restless spriit on and endless flight
Woo-hoo witchy woman see how high she flies
Woo-hoo witchy woman she got the moon in her eyes
[ guitar ] She held me spellbound in the night dancing shadows in the firelight
Crazy laughter in another room and she drove herself to madness with a silver spoon
Woo-hoo witchy woman...
[ guitar ] Well I know you want to love her but let me tell you brother
She's been sleepin' in the devil's bed
And there's rumors goin' round someone's underground
She can rock you in the nighttime till your skin turns red
Woo-hoo witchy woman...

CHUG ALL NIGHT

(Glenn Frey) « © '72 Red Cloud Music, BMI »
You scare me a bit but that's all right you know when I want you most every night
And I've been meaning to tell you baby that it makes no sense
Still I'm finally convinced yeah yeah
I believe we could chug all night I believe we could hug all night
The band is loose and the groove is right
You're so much woman I believe we could chug all night

On the day that I die well I just might scream
If I'm alive in the morning I'll be alive in a dream
You better listen to me baby cause you know that I'm hung on you
Till I'm blind and black and blue no one else will do
I do believe we chug all night I believe we could hug all night
The band is loose...

No woman ever do what you do high on a pleasure wheel
No devil ever cast a voodoo so long and dark and real
We're gonna do a little chugging we're gonna do a little hugging
The band is loose and the groove is right
I'm wired for sound are you wired for light
And you're so much woman I believe we could chug all night
[ guitar ] I said a yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Woo it's only midnight baby come on and do it to me

MOST OF US ARE SAD

(Glenn Frey) « © '72 Red Cloud Music, BMI »
Most of us are sad no one lets it show
I've been shadows of myself how was I to know
Tell me starlit sun what will time allow
We have brought our children here who can save them now
Weeping woman try to smile like the coming dawn
Most of us are sad it's true still we must go on
Love was here today oh the sun was bright
I will sing you far away love is here tonight
[ guitar ] Most of us are sad no one lets it show
I've been shadows of myself how was I to know

NIGHTINGALE

(Jackson Browne) « © '72 Swallow Turn Music, ASCAP »
I'm hanging on to my peace of mind I just don't know
I'm hanging on to those good times baby just want to let them roll
I'm gonna make it to the light and joy I'll tell you why
I got a woman who can take me there the apple of my eye
Oh oh I just don't know no no no no oh oh I love her so

Don't let me see that morning paper cause I don't need those dues
It's just the same old murder movie but they call it the news
I'll tell you what would be some story and what would set me free
Is if the same thing happened to everybody that just happened to me
Oh oh I just don't know no no no no I'll never let her go

Every time I hear somebody sneakin' up behind
Oh I turn around but I still hear that sound
And just when I'm about to lose my mind
Here comes my baby singing like a nightingale
Coming my way down along that devastation trail
Well tell the Lord above she's got a brand of love that cannot fail

I'm hanging on to my peace of mind that's no lie
I'm hanging on to my special friend the apple of my eye
The apple of my eye my inspiration too
She's got a lead on my heart and my soul and she knows just what to do
Oh no oh I just don't know no no no no
No I get so low and my mind's about to go
But wait a minute here comes my baby
Singing like a nightingale coming my way down along that devastation trail
Well let the fires burn let the floods return we will prevail
Hanging on to my peace of mind I just don't know

TRAIN LEAVES HERE THIS MORNING

(Gene Clark - Bernie Leadon) « © '72 Gene Clark Music, BMI / Irving Music, BMI »
I lost ten points just for being in the right place at exactly the wrong time
I looked right at the facts there but I may as well have been completely blind
So if you see me walking all alone don't look back I'm just on my way back home
There's a train leaves here this morning I don't know what I might be on

She signed me to a contract baby said it would all be so life long
I looked around then for a reason
When there wasn't something more to blame it on
But if time makes a difference while we're gone
Tell me now and I won't be hanging on
There's a train leaves here this morning I don't know what I might be on
[ ac.guitar ] 13-20 North Columbus was the address that I wrote down on my sleeve
I don't know just what she wanted might have been
That it was gettin' time to leave
And I watched as the smoker passed it on
And I laughed when the joker said lead on
Cause there's a train leaves here this morning I don't know what I might be on
There's a train leaves here this morning I don't know what I might be on

TAKE THE DEVIL

(Randy Meisner) « © '72 Nebraska Music, ASCAP »
Open up your eyes take the devil from your mind
He's been holding on to you and you're so hard to find
The wind outside is cold restless feeling in my soul
Tempting me to get away but there's no place a man can go
God will you lead me where I roam help me not to let my feelings show no no
[ guitar ] You are the one oh how could you be so blind
The devil prays on runaways he's never far behind
The many years I've tried now have been revealed to me
Closer is the love you'll find waiting so patiently
God will you lead me where I roam help me not to let my feelings show no no
Take the devil take the devil from your mind
[ guitar ] **********

EARLYBIRD

(Randy Meisner - Bernie Leadon) « © '72 Likely Story Music, ASCAP / Nebraska Music, ASCAP »
Early in the morning by the break of day
Earlybird is working so his life don't fade away
He spends his time denying that he's got no time to flying in the breeze
High above his own the eagle flies alone and he is free

Early bird is scratching when the load is gettin' tough
Time is passin' by and he just can't get enough
Tell you all is good and well but knows that something's wrong
Earlybird will wake one day and find his life is gone

You know I like to lay in bed and sleep out in the sun
Readin' books and playin' crazy music just for fun
You know it makes me feel so fine and sets my mind at ease
You know that I don't harm a soul in doing what I please
[ banjo - guitar ] **********

PEACEFUL EASY FEELING

(Jack Tempchin) « © '72 Jazz Bird Music, ASCAP / WB Music, ASCAP »
I like the way your sparkling earrings lay against your skin so brown
And I want to sleep with you in the desert tonight with a billion stars all around
Cause I got a peaceful easy feeling and I know you won't let me down
Cause I'm already standing on the ground

And I found out a long time ago what a woman can do to your soul
All that she can't take you anyway you don't already know how to go
And I got a peaceful easy feeling...
[ steel ] I get this feeling I may know you as a lover and a friend
This voice keeps whispering in my other ear it tells me I may never see you again
Cause I got a peaceful easy feeling and I know you won't let me down
Cause I'm already standing I'm already standing
Yes I'm already standing on the ground

TRYIN'

(Randy Meisner) « © '72 Nebraska Music, ASCAP »
I'm just arriving in the city and there's music on my mind
Looking for my destination and my home is far behind
Cause it's a long road ahead and you can make it in the end
And I'm gonna make it with my friends and I'm tryin'

It took me sometime to see it now I'm looking through this world
And it's gonna take some time before I get back help me girl
Cause you can make it if you try you gotta lay it on the line
And everything will be fine if you try
[ guitar ] Sittin' smokin' just a thinkin' is an easy thing to do
We gotta keep on trying for the feelin' to come through
And it's a lonely way to live you gotta take it you gotta give
If you mistake it just try again and I'm trying yeah
Got to keep on tryin' oh we got to keep on tryin'
Yeah I'm trying....
