Skeeter Davis' Bring It On Home -- or, Skeeter's land-o-cover tunes. Her version of "One Tin Soldier" is a bit of a disappointment: it shows where her political sympathies lay, but suffers from the same rinky-dink powder-puff pop sound as the rest of the album. Other covers include "Never Ending Song Of Love", "Loving Him Was Easier", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Take Me Home Country Roads", and a particularly chirpy version of "Reason To Believe". Chet Atkins' arrangement of "He Loved Me Too Little, Too Late" provides scant respite from Ronny Light's perky production -- in fact, it's a Skeeter Davis original, "All I Ever Wanted Was Love" that's the standout on this album.

ONE TIN SOLDIER
(Dennis Lambert - Brian Potter)
« © '69 Songs Of Universal, BMI / Duchess Music, BMI »
Listen children to a story that was written long ago
Bout a kingdom on a mountain and the valley down below
On the mountain was a treasure buried deep beneath a stone
And the valley people swore they'd have it for their very own
Go ahead and hate your neighbor go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of heaven you can justify it in the end
There won't be any trumpets blowing come the judgement day
On the bloody morning after ooh ooh one tin soldier rides away
So the people of the valley sent a message up the hill
Asking for the buried treasure tons of gold for which they'd kill
Come an answer from the kingdom with our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain all the riches buried there
Now the valley cried with anger mount your horses draw your sword
And they killed the mountain people so they won their just reward
Now they stood beside the treasure and the mountain dark and red
Turned the stone and looked beneath it Peace on Earth was all it said
Go ahead and hate your neighbor...
Go ahead and hate your neighbor...

BRING IT ON HOME
(Ben Peters - Ronny Light)
« © '71 High Harmony Music, BMI »
Lately most every evenin' you kiss me when you leave an'
And say your work has got behind
Well I'm tired of stay in home an' waitin' for you alone an'
Somewhere we've got to draw the line
I'm not accusin' you an' what kinda work you're doin'
But when it comes to love that's mine
Bring it on home bring it on home bring it on home
Bring it on home bring it on home
Ain't had no love since you've been gone
Bring it on home bring it on home bring it on home
Bring it on home bring it on home
Night after night you walk in too tired for even talkin'
And that's all I get to see of you
But honey I'm a woman you're needed here at home an'
You've got to do your homework too
So when a little lovin' it's what you're thinkin' of an'
Maybe you know just what to do
Bring it on home bring it on home bring it on home...
I need your sweet love I need your tender love
Oh baby won't you bring it won't you bring it on home

NEVER ENDING SONG OF LOVE
(Delaney Bramlett)
« © '71 Unart Catalog, BMI »
I've got a never ending love for you
From now on that's all I want to do
From the first time we met I knew
I'd have a never ending love for you
I've got a never ending love for you...
After all this time of being alone
We can love one another feel for each other from now on
It's so good I can hardly stand it
Never ending love for you
From now on that's all I want to do
From the first time we met I knew
I'd sing my never ending song of love to you
[ steel ]
After all this time of being alone...
Never ending love for you...
I've got a never ending love for you...

HE LOVED ME TOO LITTLE
(Ronny Light)
« © '71 High Harmony Music, BMI »
Everybody's gotta have a broken heart sometime
Everybody's gotta have a dream go wrong
Every tear has a reason and here's mine
He loved me too little too long
When I felt his love for me was slowly dyin'
Then I wondered how I'd ever go on
Till he made forgetting easy and here's how
He loved me too little too long
Now too little lovin' for too long a time
Can sometimes drive true love right out of your mind
And that's how it happened yes that's how it happened with me
[ piano - harmonica ]
Now too little lovin' for too long a time
Can sometimes drive true love right out of your mind
And that's how it happened yes that's how it happened with me
He loved me too little too little too long
He loved me too little

TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS
(John Denver - Bill Danoff - Taffy Nivert)
« © '71 Cherry Lane Music, ASCAP / Dimensional Music, ASCAP / WB Music, ASCAP »
Almost heaven West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains Shenandoah River
Life is old there older than the trees
Younger than the mountains growing like a breeze
Country roads take me home to the place I belong
West Virginia mountain mama take me home country roads
All my mem'ries gather round her
Miner's lady stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine teardrop in my eye
Country roads take me home...
I hear her voice in the morning as she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Driving down the road I get a feeling that I should have been
Home yesterday yesterday
Country roads take me home...
Country roads take me home...

LOVING HIM WAS EASIER
(Kris Kristofferson)
« © '70 Combine Music, BMI »
I have seen the morning burning golden on the mountain in the skies
Aching with the feeling of the freedom of an eagle when he flies
Turning on the world the way he smiled upon my soul as I lay dying
Healing as the colors in the sunshine and the shadows of his eyes
Waking in the morning to the feeling of his fingers on my skin
Wiping out the traces of the people and the places that I've been
Teaching me that yesterday was something that I'd never thought of trying
Talking of tomorrow and the money love and time we had to spend
Loving him was easier than anything I'll ever do again
Coming close together with a feeling that I'd never known before in my time
I ain't ashamed to be a woman or afraid to be a friend
I don't know the answer to the easy way he opened every door in my mind
But dreaming was as easy as believing it was never gonna end
And loving him was easier than anything I'll ever do again
Hmm hmm hm hm hm...
Loving him was easier than anything I'll ever do again
Hmm hmm hm hm hm...
Loving him was easier than anything I'll ever do again

ALL I EVER WANTED WAS LOVE
(Skeeter Davis)
« © '71 Hign Harmony Music, BMI »
Ever since I was a little bitty baby all I ever wanted was love
You thought that I needed a lot more maybe but all I ever needed was love
The memories of my childhood I recall as the very most favorite times of all
Was sittin' and rockin' on my daddy's knee or when my mother made a new dress for me
Or when my dear old grandpaw sung with me or when my grandmaw baked a berry pie for me
Or when a boyfriend chased me up a tree think it over baby maybe then you'll see
Ever since I was a little bitty baby all I ever wanted was love love love love
All I ever wanted was love
[ guitar - steel ]
When you walked into my life you told me that all you could give me was love
Remember how I laughed and I cried and told you all I ever wanted was love
I don't know why you thought I needed wealth and fame I promise I was happy just sharin' your name
But soon you bought a great big house for me every other room had a color TV
You hired a cook to bake our daily bread you even had another woman makin' our bed
Material possessions didn't matter to me baby I'm so sorry you couldn't see
Ever since I was a little bitty baby all I ever wanted was love love love love
All I ever wanted was love

JUST AS SOON AS I GET OVER LOVING YOU
(Ben Peters - George Richey)
« © '71 Al Gallico Music, BMI »
I'll go out at night to old familiar places
Stop awhile maybe see a friend or two
And your image won't be there in all their faces
I won't fall apart if they should mention you
I won't spend my time forgetting or forgiving
Or lie awake and cry the whole night through
I may even find a reason to be living
Just as soon as I get over loving you
I'll be in another's arms when I awaken
He'll hold me just the way you used to do
I won't think about the one whose place he's taken
Just as soon as I get over loving you
Just as soon as I get over loving you

REASON TO BELIEVE
(Tim Hardin)
« © '67 Alley Music, BMI / Trio Music, BMI / Allen Stanton Productions, BMI »
If I listened long enough to you
I'd find the way to believe that it's all true
Knowing that you lied straight faced while I cried
Still I looked to find the reason to believe
Someone like you makes it hard to live without somebody else
Someone like you makes it easy to give never think of myself
If I'd gave time to change my mind
I'd find the way to leave the past behind
Knowing that you lied straight faced while I cried
Still I looked to find the reason to believe
[ guitar ]
If I listened long enough to you...

NIGHT THEY DROVE OLD DIXIE DOWN
(Jaime R. Robertson)
« © '70 Canaan Music, ASCAP / WB Music, ASCAP »
Virgin Cane is my name and I served on the Denville train
Till Stoneman's calvary came they tore up the tracks again
In the winter of '65 we were hungry just barely alive
I took he train to Richmond that fell
It was the time I remember oh so well
The night they drove old Dixie down and all the bells were ringing
The night they drove old Dixie down and all the people were singing
They went la la la la la la la la la la la la
Back with my wife in Tennessee one day she said to me
Virgil quick come see there goes Robert E Lee
Now I don't mind the choppin' woods
And I don't care if the money's no good
To take what you need and leave the rest
But they sould never have taken the very best
The night they drove old Dixie down...
Like my father before me I have worked the land
And like my brother above I took a rebel stand
But he was just eighteen proud and great
When a yankee laid him in his grave
I swear by the blood below my feet
You can't raise a Cane back up when he's in defeat
The night they drove old Dixie down...
The night they drove old Dixie down...
