This big man with the big voice who calls himself Dave Dudley is easily one of the fastest rising stars on the country music horizon. But Dave's rise to fame and fortune has not been an overnight sort of thing. Like some of the satellites that now orbit our planet it took many years of trying and failing, but always trying again. Not once did he sincerely entertain the idea of quitting though many times he may have felt like it. As he says, "It took me almost fifteen years to get ix Days On The Road! Now Mr. Dudley and his band, the Roadrunners, spend most all their time on the road filling personal appearance engagements and playing for dances all over these United States and Canada. And from the looks of his schedule he'll be busy for a long time to come. Although Dave's first big hit was the novelty type song, Six Days On The Road, he is a tremendous ballad singer. Sometimes a singer gets 'typed' as a novelty song artist and people tend not to accept him as a ballad singer. Fortunately, this has not neen true in Dave's case. Credit for this must go, in part, to Mercury's A & R Director Shelby Singleton who recognized in Dave's voice the deep, sincere quality that could sell a great ballad. It was Shelby who made the statement during one of Dave's early Mercury sessions, that, "this man could develop into a great ballad singer." This album, we feel, proves that point. Here he has a chance to show what he can do with some of the great country standards and a few new ones that could easily become favorites. The 'eternal triangle' is probably the subject for more songs than any other. As the old saying goes, "the chains of love sometime get so heavy it takes three to bear them!" And of course when things like that begin to happen, whether you're in city the size of New York or a small community with a general store and service station, you immediately become The Talk Of The Town! Thus, our album title. And the songs herein deal very closelywith the situation. The titles themselves pretty well the story. There's the old favorite, Slipping Around, the Roy Drusky hit, Three Hearts In A Tangle, Don Robertson's Please Help Me I'm Falling, some newer ones such as, If You're Afraid To Tell Him I Will, A Short Memory, Hiding Behind The Curtain, One Has My Name The Other Has My Heart (one of the all time favorites), the title song Talk Of The Town, and others. All in all it pretty well covers the field of wandering lovers who want to have their cake and eat, too! No one can accurately predict just how far any one man can go in his chosen profession. We can only speculate. But, even speculation must have some basis. Dave Dudley's past performances, his attitude toward the industry and his love for singing gives us all the reason we need to speculate that he will go long and far as a country entertainer. As we said, he is doing what he loves to do - sing! And we firmly believe that after you listen to this album you will join us in saing, "I love to hear him do what he loves to do - sing!"

TALK OF THE TOWN

The talk of the town was a secret to me
I was the last one to see
It's funny how blind a heart in love can be
Yes the talk of the town was a secret to me
Everybody else knew about him and that you were meeting secretly
Everyone in town was talking and telling everybody but me
The talk of the town was a secret to me...

Everybody else knew about him...

PLEASE HELP ME I'M FALLING
(Don Robertson - Hal Blair)
« © '59 Anne Rachel Music, ASCAP »
Please help me I'm falling in love with you
Close the door to temptation don't let me walk through
Turn away from me darling I'm begging you to
Please help me I'm falling in love with you
I belong to another whose arms have grown cold
But I promised forever to have and to hold
I can never be free dear but when I'm with you
I know that I'm losing the will to be true
Please help me I'm falling and that would be sin
Close the door to temptation don't let me walk in
For I mustn't want you but darling I do
Please help me I'm falling in love with you

SHORT MEMORY
(Jimmy Key)
« © '64 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
No need to tell me where you've been
For I know who's in town again
And tonight you saw him secretly
Oh you've got a short memory
Yes you've got a short memory
You don't care how much you hurt me
So I guess this is where I came in
I can see you'll take him back again
And after all your promises to me
Oh yes you've got a short memory
And after all your promises to me
Oh yes you've got a short memory

THREE HEARTS IN A TANGLE
(Ray Pennington - Sonny Thompson - Ray Starr)
« © '61 Fort Knox Music, BMI / Trio Music, BMI »
Three hearts in a tangle which heart will I break
Tonight as I sit by my window watching the people go by
I'm trying to reach a decision but I know I can't do what's right
Three hearts in a tangle which heart should I take
Three hearts in a tangle which heart will I break
If I choose the one that I should choose then the other heart would break
But if I'll leave them both then I'd suffer which heart will pay for my mistake
Three hearts in a tangle which heart should I take...
Which heart will I break

SLIPPIN' AROUND
(Floyd Tillman)
« © '49 Peer International, BMI »
Seems I always have to slip around to be with you my dear
Slippin' around afraid we'd might be found
I know I can't forget you and I've got to have you near
But we just have to slip around and live in constant fear
Though you're tied up with someone else and I'm all tied up too
I know I've made mistakes dear but I'm so in love with you
I hope someday I'll find a way to bring you back to me
And I won't have to slip around to have your company

MAD
(Tom T. Hall)
« © '64 Newkeys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI »
I got about half high so I spent the whole weekend out
I got home Monday morning tore up like a can of Kraut
My only suit was layin' on the steps
I just picked up and run and I ain't been back there since
Well mad yeah she's mad
It's back to the doghouse I know from the practise I've had
When she's mad I play a dangerous game
In the obituary column they've already printed my name
She's five feet three and weights about one hundred and eight
She's the kind of gal who don't believe in men a makin' mistakes
She's sweet and mighty nice
But when she's mad she's got a voice that will cut through ice
Well mad oooh she's mad...
She's got eyes like a cat and she watches every move that I make
An alarm clock mind that's ringin' every time that I'm late
I'm sorry sick and all alone
But I'll have to stick it out cause it just ain't safe to go home
Well mad oooh she's mad...
In the obituary column they've already printed my name

YONDER COMES A SUCKER
(Jim Reeves)
« © '55 Tree Publishing, BMI »
Well that's railroad steamboat river and cannal
Yonder comes a sucker and he's got my girl
And she's gone gone gone gone gone gone gone
I'll bid her my last farewell
I fell in love with a pretty little thing
I thought that wedding bells would ring
She was as sweet as she could be
Till I found out what she did to me
Well that's railroad steamboat river and cannal...
I asked her mother to let her go
She whispered mother just tell him no
Though he may think that I am true
There's twenty more that think so too
Well that's railroad steamboat river and cannal...
Now I won't cry my life away
Some other sucker will have to pay
And when he finds that she is gone
I guess I'll hear him sing this song
Well that's railroad steamboat river and cannal...

I TURNED HER EVERY WAY BUT ON
(Dave Dudley - Johnny Voit - Gene Norell)
« © '64 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
My baby's gone I know she won't be back
So I don't stand so weary I told her that
I've thought I had it made but I was wrong
I guess I turned her every way but on
I've known all kinds that haven't meant a thing
I've made 'em loved 'em then left without a ring
The one that turned me on just turned me down
I guess I turned her every way but on
Of all the broken hearts I've left behind
I've never thought that I'd be the next in line
The one that turned me on just turned me down
I guess I turned her every way but on
[ guitar ]
Of all the broken hearts I've left behind...
I guess I turned her every way but on

ONE HAS MY NAME (THE OTHER HAS MY HEART)
(Eddie Dean - Dixie Dean - Hal Blair)
« © '48 Southern Music, ASCAP »
One has my name the other has my heart
With one I'll remain that's how my heartaches start
One has brown eyes the other's eyes are blue
To one I am tied to the other I am true
One has my love the other only me
But what good is love to a heart that can't be free
So I'll go on living my life just the same
While one has my heart the other has my name
[ ac.guitar ]
If I could live over my life I would change
The one who has my heart would also have my name

IF YOU'RE AFRAID TO TELL HIM I WILL
(Bill Brock)
« © '64 Johnny Bienstock Music, BMI »
You say you love me more than anything in this whole world
For my love you'd beg and borrow or steal
Then why don't you tell the one you look you love me more than him
If you're afraid to tell him I will
I'll tell him of the times we met in the shadows of the town
I'll tell him how many times I tried to tear his whole world down
For I love you more than the birds could love the flowers on the hill
And if you're afraid to tell him I will
Could it be you've been seeing me and my love has been at ease
It hurts to know that you may love him still
I've just got to know to ease this tickin' deep within my heart
And if you're afraid to tell him I will

DON'T BE SURPRISED
(Margie Singleton - Jerry Kennedy)
« © '64 Shelby Singleton Music, BMI »
I've known all alone that you had leavin' on your mind
My sign of questions have been answered by the look that's in your eyes
Any day now you'll come to me and I know just what you'll say
First you apologize say that you expect the words and then walk away
Don't be surprised if I don't look surprised when you say goodbye
Don't be takin' by surprise but you expect the absence of tears in my eyes
Any day now you'll come to me...
[ guitar ]
Any day now you'll come to me...

LAST YEAR'S HEARTACHES
(Margie Singleton - Dianne Kilroy)
« © '64 Shelby Singleton Music, BMI »
I thought I was over losing you
Even got where I could smile now and then
Everywhere I go I see someone who reminds me of you
Then last year's heartaches come rushing back in
I feel the same old tears in my eyes
The same old hurt comes back in style
Then last year's heartaches come rushing back in
My eyes keep playin' tricks
Everywhere I go I see your face in every crowd that I meet
But when I turn around to speak you're never there
Then last year's heartaches come rushing back in
I feel the same old tears in my eyes...
