Anyone who has ever added a recording by this artist to their collection or listened to him on the radio has no need to refer to liner notes for a recommendation of the contents of this album. The magic world Dave Dudley, Mercury Record, and produced by Jerry Kennedy are always sufficient to send any prospective record buyer scurrying to the cash register. For the uninitiated, the titles of the songs contained herein make the package sufficiently attractive to take home to give 'Ravin' Dave' a listen. One More Mile penned by Tom T.Hall (of Harper Valley P.T.A. fame) is a song portraying one man's views of his life, his love affair and his job...'One more mile, one more detour that's the way life goes, tears and smiles.' ...It is performed with authority by this great entertainer whose mileage to the top covers many detours, many tears and many smiles. In high school Dave excelled in sports, especially baseball, and turned pro. As fate would have it, however, it wasn't until a couple of weeks after Uncle Sam had young Dave under contract in the South Pacific that a baseball scout visited that Dudley homestead offering a bonus to Mr. Dudley, Sr. if he would sign his son with the Yankees. Due to his prior commitment, Dave regrettably had to sit that one out but after his discharge he lost no time in signing with the Chicago White Sox. Again, fate threw Dave a curve. "It was one of those typical Texas nights," he recalls, "the grass was wet where I had been warming up before going out to the mound to pitch. I hadn't kicked my spikes real clean and when I reared back to deliver a pitch one of my feet slipped and I tore loose a muscle in my back." The years that followed were not easy ones for Dave Dudley. He returned to his native state of Wisconsin, working as a disk jockey and later branched out into the entertainment world, singing whenever and wherever possible. However, as fate would have it, another, and this time nearly disastrous setback confronted the now ambitious young singer. Dave stepped in front of a fast moving vehicle and was hospitalized 4 months, critically injured. "Those were the most depressing days of my life," he recalls. "It seemed at times that I would never be able to walk again and then when I was able to hop around on crutches, there wasn't anyone who wanted a cripple on stage !...It's my way and it's the nature of my mind, I've gotta keep doggin' it, one more mile..." Fortunately, for country music fans, it WAS Dave's way, it WAS the nature of his mind, and eventually casting crutches aside, he kept right on doggin' it along many hard miles right to the top of the nation's charts, smashing both pop and country with the sensational Six Days On The Road. Since then, Dave has never looked back - scoring with hits including Mad, Two Six Packs Away, Truck Drivin' Son Of A Gun, What We're Fighting For, and There Ain't No Easy Run, all of which are available on current Mercury albums. Please Let Me Prove, from One More Mile, a tender love song, and another recent hit for Dudley, is done here with a gentleness that would be hard to surpass. Other highlights are two of the year's most successful songs, Wichita Lineman and Ballad Of Forty Dollars, both of which showcase the versatility of this truly outstanding artist. On the personal side, Dave is married to a very beautiful young lady who, incidentally, is rated by many as the top basset Hound breeder in the country. Even when he takes a few days relaxation from his heavy schedule, Jeanne Dudley will often have him routed to some hound competition...still doggin' it..one more mile!

ONE MORE MILE

One more mile one more detour
That's the way life goes tears and smiles
I may miss you and I may wish that I have stayed
But I'll be movin' it one more mile
And then one more I gotta keep moving
I was born a traveling child
It's my way and it's the nature of my mind
I gotta keep doggin' it one more mile
Storms won't stop me wind won't do it
A little rough ride that fits my style
When the sun sets in the window of your world
I'll be draggin' it one more mile
And then one more I gotta keep moving...
(One more mile)
One more mile one more detour...
And then one more I gotta keep moving...
And then one more I gotta keep moving...

ANGEL
(Dave Dudley)
« © '69 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
My baby is an angel don't tell me she can't fly
Cause when I'm with her I'm way off the ground
But hear lately they say angel has been flyin' kind of blind
And I think some devil brought my angel down
I can't imagine angel just leaving me behind
She said the world was hers with me around
And all the things I've planned always with her in mind
But I think some devil brought my angel down
I'm gonna keep on looking high and low for her
I can't let her fly away from me
If I can find her I can show her love can grow
Cause the way I love her she will plainly know
That my angel is my baby and I need her oh so much
But she's lost and I'm afraid that she's been found
But maybe she'll remember and fly back to my arms
But I think some devil brought my angel down
Yeah I think some devil brought my angel down

GAMBLIN' MAN
(Estelle Lowell - J.L. Elliott)
« © '68 ATV Songs, BMI »
I've gambled down in Georgia when I was just a lad
I've gambled from the Yukon to the shores of Trinidad
I'll bet my green on anything if and when I can
I've had my run of luck boy I'm a gamblin' man
I've gambled on the jumping frogs in Bear Creek Arkansas
I bet ponies at the Ak-Sar-Ben up in Omaha
It's pennies on the sidewalk in the town of Baltimore
Seen plenty of big action boy but I'm still a wantin' more
I've gambled on a cockroach in the jail in Abilene
I've bet on cajun rooster fights down in New Orleans
I played the game road poker as I wheeled my big sedan
I'll bet my green on anything I'm a gamblin' man
I've gambled in Las Vegas broke the bank at Keno's Club
I made a fortune on the road playing five cards stud
I don't brag but I'm the sharpest they call me Gold Dust Dan
I've made a bundle on gamblin' I'm a gamblin' man
Well I bet my love on a dancin' girl then I caught her runnin' round
I guess she's just too much like me she'll never settle down
Now I'm broke and busted just playin' a losin' hand
But I'm gonna make a comeback someday I'm a gamblin' man
Yeah I'm gonna make a comeback someday I'm a gamblin' man

I HOPE I NEVER LOVE THAT MUCH AGAIN
(Roy Baham)
« © '68 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
I know just how great love can be I loved so much one time
I know how it hurts to see it end
I've had my share and if I live to be a hundred years
I hope I never love that much again
The bigger the love the harder the fall
And it takes a long time for a heart to mend
If there should ever come a time when I could love at all
I hope I never love that much again
I loved her more than life itself she was everything to me
For I believed in life and love back then
If I can just forget she's gone if her mem'ry sets me free
I hope I never love that much again
The bigger the love the harder the fall...
I hope I never love that much again

BUT FOR ME IT'S NOT
(Dave Dudley)
« © '68 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
Give me mister ole sun and a little ole coolin' breeze
And a long highway to do with as I please
I don't have no one so I move around quite a lot
Some folks would call it lonely but for me ah ah no it's not
Well I see a lotta pretty girls everywhere that I go
And sometimes I wish I had one for my own
But I never found one who'd share everything I ain't got
They say it's much too lonely but for me ah ah no it's not
I can't understand why everybody wants a home and there they stay
Ain't they never heard a robin near a highway at the breakin' of a day
Or want to dream just a little by the sound of a gurgling pot
I guess that could be lonely but for me ah ah no it's not
Well when I die I wanna die standin' up
Near a highway sign that's pointin' out the rock
Where I can watch all the folks in my backyard livin' it up
Now for some that might be lonely but for me ah ah no it's not

WHEN I GET BACK TO NORMAL
(Chuck Wells)
« © '68 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
In a little old place cleanin' our polished bar
A lot of empty bottles and I helped put 'em there
Look in the mirror I can plainly see a red eyed guy looking back at me
When I get normal everything is gonna be alright
I think when I get back to normal everything is gonna be alright
Streets outside are crooked and a way too long
It's so muddy in the gutter gone long much too strong
I don't guess I'll get my baby back I'm on a rollercoaster on a crazy track
When I get normal everything is gonna be alright
I hope when I get back to normal everything is gonna be alright
[ guitar ]
Stairs to my room are narrow and a hard to climb
Keep steppin' up one slippin' back two at a time
An awkward keyhole misplaced chair guess I told everybody that I'm here
When I get back to normal everything is gonna be alright oh oh ooh
When I get back to normal everything is gonna be alright
I'm a sick sick man ooh my aching head
I should get up but I guess I better stay in bed
Ever since my baby's gone I've been loaded from dusk till dawn
When I get normal everything is gonna be alright
I got a dandy when I get back to normal everything is gonna be alright

(Jimmy Key)
« © '67 Newkeys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI »
Oh please let me prove my love for you
Don't make me suffer I beg of you
I wanna show what real love can do
Oh please let me prove my love for you
A love in the past has left it's mark
So now you resist this love of ours
You're so afraid that I won't be true
Oh please let me prove my love for you
[ strings ]
I wanna show what real love can do
Oh please let me prove my love for you

BALLAD OF FORTY DOLLARS
(Tom T. Hall)
« © '68 Newkeys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI »
The man who preached the funeral said it really was a simple way to die
He laied down to rest one afternoon and never opened up his eyes
They hired me and Fred and Joe to dig the grave and carry up some chairs
It took us seven hours and I guess we must've drunk a case of beer
I guess I oughta go and watch them put him down but I don't own the suit
And anyway when they start talkin' bout the fire and hell well I get spooked
So I'll just sit here in my truck and act like I don't know him when they pass
Anyway when they're all through I've got to go to work and mow the grass
Well here they come and who's that ridin' in that big ole shiny limousine
Look at all that chrome I do believe that that's the sharpest thing I've seen
That must belong to his rich Uncle someone said he owned a great big farm
When they get parked I'll mosey down and look it over that won't do no harm
Well that must be the widow in the car and would you take a look at that
That sure is a pretty dress you know some women do look good in black
He's not even in the ground and they say that his track is up for sale
They say she took it pretty hard but you can't tell too much behind a veil
Well listen ain't that pretty when that bugler plays the military taps
I think that when you's in the war they always hired and played a song like that
Well here I am and there they go and I guess you'd just call it my bad luck
I hope he'll rest in peace but trouble is that fellow owes me forty bucks

WICHITA LINEMAN
(Jim Webb)
« © '68 PolyGram Int, ASCAP »
I am the lineman for the county and I drive the main road
Searching in the sun for another overload
I hear you singing in the wires I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line
I know I need a small vacation but it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain
And I need you more than want you and I'll want you for all time
And the Wichita lineman is still on the line
[ guitar ]
And I need you more than want you...

I ALWAYS TAKE A TRAIN
(Roy Baham)
« © '68 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
As long as I'm goin' the wind's always blowin'
Across the leafless desert of my mind
Give me a pair of rails and crossties my troubles I'll say goodbye
And I'll show you how I'll leave 'em all behind
I'll leave here in a hurry I never could stand worry
And there's only one way I can clear my brain
Some people take a drink to help them to forget
But I always nearly always take a train
With the world outside flyin' past my window
And a whistle blowin' for a town ahead
Got my troubles off my back I'll leave 'em layin' on the track
Along with that goodbye that was said
The big wheels keep turnin' while the memory I'm burnin'
Of that someone I left standin' in the rain
Some people take a drink to help them to forget
But I always nearly always take a train
With the world outside flyin' past my window...

I'LL BE MOVING ALONG
(Tom T. Hall - Dave Dudley)
« © '68 Newkeys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI »
I'm letting go of what used to be
When there was love just you and me
It's like you said it all went wrong
What's left to say I'll be moving along
Too bad too bad for me for you
We planted love's seed but nothing grew
Too soon to know where I belong
Can't stay here I'll be moving along
I'll be moving along it wasn't all bad
The memory makes me a little bit sad
It had to be said I wasn't that strong
You found the words I'll be moving along
Too bad too bad for me for you...
