lp discography - covers & lyrics

"The highway is a part of hell that never caught on fire," sings Dave Dudley in the title track of this 1970 album. Memorable lyrics notwithstanding, the song barely cracked the Top 15, while the comparatively bland "Comin' Down" made the Top Ten. The album is otherwise full of fun material like the rocking "Six-O-One" and Shel Silverstein's "The Rollin's All Gone Out of This Rollin' Stone," and even a trucking song in deference to Dudley's musical past. Kris Kristofferson's "For the Good Times" is a little too treacly in Dudley's rendering, and in general the faster and funnier material is more successful than the ballads. One exception is the poignant "I Cry a Lot," in the tradition of — if not quite on par with — "I Guess Things Happen That Way" and "Funny How Time Slips Away." Dudley doesn't often get much recognition for his songwriting, but he wrote half of this album, a minor feat in the days when artists often released three or four albums a year.
(A friend of mine has a theory that no one ever reads liner notes. Mine is that at least the artist does. T.T. Hall.)
Dear Dave, I think that this is one of the best albums you have ever done. I especially like: Coming Down, Farewell To The Road, Listen Betty, Under Cover Of The Night, I Hope My Kind Of Love, The Rolling's All Gone Out Of This Rolling Stone, Cry A Lot, For The Good Times, I Feel A Cry Coming On, Down On Whisky Row, and 6-0-1. Dave, do you remember the muzzle loading pistol you gave me for Christmas last year? Well, the other day I was out in the pasture shooting it while I was looking at my cows. Next time you're in Nashville we'll have a beef roast. The people in Olive Hill, Ky. (where you came to sing at my Homecoming Celebration this summer) finally found the guitar player you lost. They are sending him back on a bus. You will also be glad to get the bus back. I had a good time, too. I have discussed the possibility of installing a direct telephone line between my house and yours so our wives, Dixie and Jeanne, can continue their conversations about their Basset Hounds. The line would only cost around eight thousand dollars which would save us both money. We could even make an arrangements to use it ourselves every third Wednesday. I hear that you have been having tremendous crowds at your shows on the road. I have talked with the people at Mercury records and we all concur that you should stop referring to me as your brother. People are asking for records by Tom T. Dudley...and not very many! I am looking forward to the bear hunt in your part of the country. I have been practicing with the switches, like you said, but I still feel we ought to take along a gun... just in case. Dave, I know you are busy at the D.D. Lodge in Dudleyville with all of the folks who stop by, but would you look around and see if I left my rhyming dictionary up there. I just had a great idea for a song about these two guys who are sitting around this bar about nine-thirty in the morning and...

LISTEN BETTY (I'M SINGING YOUR SONG)

(Tom T. Hall) « © '70 Newkeys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI »
A friend and I made one short run to Knoxville one day
We got the apple pie and coffee hungries on the way
We pulled into a little truckstop just outside of town
Pretty soon the waitress came around

She said my name is Betty and I'd know you anywhere
I'd like to have a minute of your time if you don't care
Would you sing a song about me and the waitresses you've met
About the broken promises we get

Now listen Betty I'm singing your song
About the drivers that have done you wrong
All I wanna do is lay the blame where it belongs
A Listen Betty I'm singing your song

There's a broken heart for every truckstop on the right
There's a lonesome driver for each passing set of lights
Now I can't tell you how to love or tell you how to live
All I can do is tell it like it is

There's a million waitresses all up and down the line
I've seen some that were laughin' and I've seen some that were cryin'
I've left some that were happy and I've left some that were blue
If you're a waitress here's a song for you

Now listen Betty I'm singing your song...

The highway is a part of hell that never caught on fire
A driver is the kinda man the devil wouldn't hire
That's what you're sayin' Betty but if you can't stand the heat
Quit that job and let those drivers be

Now listen Betty I'm singing your song...
Now listen Betty I'm singing your song...

COMIN' DOWN

(Dave Dudley) « © '70 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
It seems to me your body's yearnin' seems to me your lips are turnin' cold
And after all the love I've given someone else's love is takin' hold
And I can see your mind is workin' and an awful thought is turnin' round
I don't know when my time is comin' when it does my world is comin' down

Comin' down fallin' down
I don't know when my time is comin'
When it does my world is comin' down

I can see your eyes are wanting but I know they're wanting something new
And I know that it's all over what's he gonna do that I can't do
And I been knowin' that you're restless like the leaves that tumble to the ground
I don't know when my time is comin' when it does my world is comin' down

Comin' down fallin' down...

No I don't know when my time is comin' when it does my world is comin' down
Oh no I don't know when my time is comin' when it does my world is comin' down

UNDER COVER OF THE NIGHT

(Dave Dudley) « © '63 Tree Publishing, BMI »
We stand alone on a quiet empty street
Just you and I and a love that's bitter-sweet
On a corner where the streetlamp's not so bright
That's where we meet under cover of the night

You belong to someone else the same for me
But we try to forget that we're not free
So time is ours from dark till dawning light
That's when we meet under cover of the night

There is no chance to change what should have been
So until the darkness brings you back again
I'll be waiting on a corner out of sight
That's where we meet under cover of the night
[ steel ] There is no chance to change...
That's where we meet under cover of the night

I FEEL A CRY COMING ON

(Jimmy Key) « © '66 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
Oh she just walked out the door
And I know she won't be back anymore
The echo of her footsteps have gone
And now I feel a cry comin' on

Her picture on the table smiles at me
The sweet tender love is there to see
Yesterday that sweet love was my own
But now I feel a cry comin' on

Yes I feel a cry comin' on
And for the first time in my life I'm all alone
Ev'rything I love is gone
And now I feel a cry coming on
[ piano ] Yes I feel a cry comin' on...

DOWN ON WHISKEY ROW

(Jan Crutchfield) « © '70 Dixie Jane Music, BMI »
The ol' neon signs are lighted so I'd best get to the bar
After all I've got position I must hold
There's a stool that waits for me after eight that's where I'll be
Sittin' four seats down on Whiskey Row

Oh them stools are seldom vacant you might say we've formed a club
If you miss one night back up the stools you go
And I'm not braggin' when I say that I'm sure well on my way
Cause I'm four seats down on Whiskey Row

Four seats down on Whiskey Row
And I don't have but six more seats to go
Then I'll be down about as far as I can ever go
Four seats down on Whiskey Row

I've heard tell of people drinkin' till it soon controls their brain
But I guess one look at me proves that ain't so
Why I don't forget a thing like I told ol' what's his name
I'm four seats down on Whiskey Row

I just heard some news that's awful the bartender just told me
Late yesterday they laid away ol' Joe
Well I'm as sorry as can be but now look what that does for me
I'm five seats down on Whiskey Row

Five seats down on Whiskey Row
Now I don't have but five more seats to go
Then I'll be down about as far as I can ever go
Five seats down on Whiskey Row
And I don't have very far to go five seats down on Whiskey Row

I HOPE MY KIND OF LOVE DIDN'T BREAK YOUR HEART

(Dave Dudley) « © '70 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
Don't let my leavin' make you cry too hard
I know the things I said caught you off your guard
I never wanted all of you just one little part
I hope my kind of love didn't break your heart

Well there you went and said it that we're in love again
It doesn't matter I would be just like I've always been
You opened up your love for me that's how these things all start
I hope my kind of love didn't break your heart

I didn't try but I know you tried to make it work
Well the only thing I've really done was to make you hurt
I'm through talkin' it's time for walkin' don't let your teardrops start
I hope my kind of love didn't break your heart
Oh I hope my kind of love didn't break your heart

FAREWELL TO THE ROAD

(Tom T. Hall) « © '70 Newkeys Music, BMI / Unichappell Music, BMI »
(Farewell to the road farewell to the road)

Well ol' truck this is our farewell to the road I guess we're both out of style
I could sell ye but I don't need the money you sure don't need the miles
That doctor says I gotta get off the road he tells me my eyes are sick
And they won't let you run when you get too old that windshield gets too thick
We made many a run together ol' truck sometimes when I had me no help
I think I slept right behind that wheel you just kept drivin' yourself
Hey we had some swingers ol' timer like that gal from Tennessee
She rode with us pretty near six hundred miles ha that seat was warm for a week
Oh yeah I gave that radio to Jim Smith you know that sure was a dandy thing
I'm gonna miss Ralph and Mike and Bill and all them boys
And hearin' them country people sing
And ev'rytime I shave and I see that scar that I picked up in Abilene
That gal was about as pretty as a summer night
But that boy that was with her he was awful mean
Well ol' timer I gotta be goin' and I'll drink to you down at the bar
You know it's gonna take me a month or two to get used to drivin' this car
Now this lot it's yours long as you want it and I'll see you every two or three weeks
And maybe this just ain't the proper thing to say but here's hopin' you rust in peace

(Farewell to the road farewell to the road)

ROLLIN'S ALL GONE OUT OF THIS ROLLIN' STONE

(Shel Silverstein) « © '70 Evil Eye Music, BMI »
There's a baby in Minneapolis that I've never seen
And I guess he'd never guess that I'm his dad
There's a woman up in east St Louis she'll make one hell of a wife
For a man with the strength and the courage I've never had

Cause every used car lot and hot shot from LA to New Orleans
Is a restin' place for ev'rything I own
But travelin's got me weary and the road took all of my dreams
Now the rollin's all gone outta this rollin' stone

There's a little white framed cottage got boards on the windows and doors
And the Ruby San Michelle in Montreal
And if you're ever in San Quentin cell Block B Cell 24
Well you just might see my name carved on the wall

Cause every used car lot and hot shot...

Got a motel key three cigarettes seven bottle tops
And last week's TV guide and a half a comb
Hey and some men grow families some men grow crops
But older is the only thing I grow

Cause every used car lot and hot shot...
The rollin's all gone outta this rollin' stone
Oh the rollin's all gone outta this rollin' stone

FOR THE GOOD TIMES

(Kris Kristofferson) « © '70 Careers Music, BMI »
Don't look so sad I know it's over
But life goes on and this ole world keeps on turning
Let's just be glad we had some time to spend together
There's no need to watch the bridges that we're burnin'

Lay your head upon my pillow hold your warm and tender body close to mine
Hear the whisper of the raindrops blowin' soft against the window
And make believe you love me one more time for the good times

I'll get along you'll find another
But I'll be here if you should find you ever need me
Don't say a word about tomorrow or forever
There'll be time enough for sadness when you leave me

Lay your head upon my pillow...

I CRY A LOT

(Dave Dudley) « © '70 Southern Arts Music, BMI »
Did you notice when I see you I can smile
And that beats how I used to be by a mile
I don't care as much don't need you as much and I'm starting to go out
But let me tell you I have this problem I cry a lot

And can't you feel when I call you anymore
That I don't sound as blue as before
You don't bother me and the truth is I have almost forgot
But let me tell you I have this problem I cry a lot

It's not as hard when I see our friends
And I tell them that the world didn't end for me
Do I miss you well yes and no but they say absence makes any love grow old
And I'm doin' better now I think I'll make it I can take you as well as not
But let me tell you I have this problem I cry a lot
But let me tell you I have this problem I cry a lot
