A certain level of consistency marks all the Patsy Cline recordings for Decca, many of which were recycled in their entirety by MCA when it bought out the older company's catalog. This is business as usual for the supreme country songstress, mixing up some Tin Pan Alley material with hardcore country and a few choices out of left field, some of which are a bit unfortunate, such as "Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home." It is true that this is a singer who could rend emotion from the label under a sofa, but these albums go by quickly and the best of the bunch are the ones with the highest quotient of classic songs. The high point here has to be her version of "Lovesick Blues," in which the supposedly carved-in-stone association with Hank Williams quickly crumbles as the sassy, honky tonk-with-class arrangement sets in. There's also some good material from Harlan Howard and Hank Cochran, but in summation there are other albums in this series that Cline collectors might want to grab first.

THAT'S HOW A HEARTACHE BEGINS
(Harlan Howard)
« © '62 Tree Publishing, BMI »

Tell a little white lie and then multiply by ten
And then that's how a heartache begins
Mix some flowers he bought with a date he forgot to attend
And then that's how a heartache begins

I know about heartaches I know all the mistakes
That a young love can make I've made them
So let's still be friends to the soft violins
I've listened while somebody played them
Call his number in vain again and again he's not in
But then that's how a heartache begins

I know about heartaches...
That's how a heartache begins that's how a heartache begins

LOVE LETTERS IN THE SAND
(Nick Kenny - Charles Kenny - J. Fred Coots)
« © '57 Bourne Co, ASCAP / Toy Town Tunes, ASCAP »

On a day like today we pass the time away
Writing love letters in the sand
How you laughed when I cried each time I saw the tide
Take our love letters from the sand

You made a vow that you would always be true
But somehow that vow meant nothing to you
Now my poor heart just aches with every wave that breaks
Over love letters in the sand

You made a vow that you...

BILL BAILEY WON'T YOU PLEASE COME HOME
(Hughie Cannon - Claude Sharpe)
« © '06 Down South Music, BMI / Shawnee Press, ASCAP »

Won't you come home Bill Bailey won't you come home
I moan the whole night long
I'll do your cookin' honey I'll pay the rent
I know that I've done you wrong

Remember that rainy eve that I drove you out
With nothin' but a fine tooth comb
Yes I know that I'm to blame and ain't that a shame
Bill Bailey won't you please come home

Yeah won't you come home Bill Bailey won't you come home
I moan the whole night long
I'll do your cookin' honey I'll pay the rent
I know that I've done you wrong

Remember that rainy eve that I drove you out
With nothin' but a fine tooth comb
Well I know that I'm to blame and ain't that a dirty lowdown shame
Bill Bailey won't you please come home

Come home come home Bill Bailey
Bill Bailey won't you please come on home
Come home Bill Bailey

SHOES
(Hank Cochran - Thelma Smith)
« © '60 Tree Publishing, BMI »

Everything you told me I believe
You said that I was all that you'd ever need
That I made life worth living for you
And no one else could ever fill my shoes

But them shoes don't fit me anymore
They lost their shape when I lost all that I cared for
And someone else will fill the shoes that I once wore
Cause them shoes don't fit me anymore
[ steel ]
When a shoe is new it fits awful tight
When our love was new everything was right
When a shoe is old you throw it away
Our love is like the shoes that you wore yesterday

But them shoes don't fit me anymore...

LOVESICK BLUES
(Irving Mills - Cliff Friend)
« © '49 Mills Music, ASCAP »

Got a feelin' cause I'm blue oh Lord since my daddy said goodbye
I don't know what I'm gonna do all I do is sit and cry
Oh Lord that last long day he said goodbye oh Lord I thought I would die
He'll do ya he'll do me he's got that kinda lovin'
But Lord I love to hear him when he calls me sweet baby
What a beautiful dream I hate to think it all over
I lost my heart it seems
I've grown so used to that man somehow and I'm nobody's sugar baby now
Cause I'm lonesome I got the lovesick blues

Now I'm in love I'm in love with a wonderful guy
That's what's the matter with me
Well I'm in love I'm in love with a wonderful guy
But he don't care about me
Well I tried and I tried to keep him satisfied but he just wouldn't stay
But now that he is leavin' this is all I've got to say

I got a feelin' cause I'm blue oh Lord since my daddy said goodbye
I don't know what I'm gonna do I lost my heart it seems
I've grown so used to that man somehow and I'm nobody's sugar baby now
Cause I'm lonesome I got the lovesick blues
[ piano ]
I've grown so used to that man somehow and I'm nobody's sugar baby now
Cause I'm lonesome I got the lovesick blues

LOVIN' IN VAIN
(Freddie Hart)
« © '60 Vidor Publications, BMI »

I still want your lovin' and I still need your lovin'
But I can't live a life of lovin' in vain

Last night I saw you walking talking with another
Overhead you tell her our love don't mean a thing
And as I walked away dear my heart broke down inside me
I still want your lovin' and I still need your lovin'
But I can't live a life of lovin' in vain
[ steel ]
I'd rather be a poor girl not a penny to my name
Than to know my life would all be lived in vain
I'd rather be alone dear if you don't want to change
I still want your lovin' and I still need your lovin'
But I can't live a life of lovin' in vain

I still want your lovin' and I still need your lovin'
But I can't live a life of lovin' in vain

I'M MOVING ALONG
(Johnny Starr)
« © '59 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

(Just moving moving along just moving moving along)

Well I'm chasin' the blues right out of my mind
I'm leavin' my cares and worries behind
Cause I'm on my way I'm leavin' town doday
(Just moving moving along)

My lonesome ole heart is broken in two
I'll be walkin' the floor ever night over you
But our love is all gone I'm moving along I'm a leavin' town doday

I got no love no cares no heartaches I'm leavin' them all behind
Like the sun and the moon and the stars above we're gonna be one of a kind
Well I'm moving along I gotta be free I'll find a new love wherever I'll be
But my old love is all gone I'm moving on I'm a leavin' town doday

(I got no love no cares no heartaches I'm leavin' them all behind)
Like the sun and the moon and the stars above we're gonna be one of a kind
Well I'm moving along I gotta be free I'll find a new love wherever I'll be
But my old love is all gone I'm moving on I'm a leavin' town doday
I'm leavin' this town doday
(Just moving moving along just moving moving along)

HE CALLED ME BABY
(Harlan Howard)
« © '61 Central Songs, BMI »

He called me baby baby all night long
Used to hold and kiss me until dawn
Then one day I awoke and he was gone
Now there's no more baby baby all night long

He called me baby baby all night long
Hissed my tears away when things went wrong
Oh what I'd give if he'd just come on back home
And call me baby baby all night long

He called me baby baby all night long
Built me up so high and made me strong
Now each time in dreams just like a song
I still hear baby baby still hear baby baby
I still hear baby baby all night long

THERE HE GOES
(Eddie Miller - W.S. Stevenson - Durwood Haddock)
« © '55 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

There he goes he's walking away
Each step he takes brings heartaches my way
She won his heart I lost him someway
There he goes he's walking away

If I hadn't cheated and I hadn't lied
I'd be the one walking by his side
I love him still and I guess that it shows
He's walking away there he goes

Oh if I hadn't cheated and I hadn't lied...

CRAZY DREAMS
(W.S. Stevenson - Clyde C. Beam - Charley L. Jiles)
« © '60 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

I had a dream last night that I held you
And you still seemed as handsome to me
Though when I awoke I found you missin'
It's just another crazy dream for me

Crazy dreams linger on as I face an empty dawn
With no end to it all can I see
For I've surely reached the end lost your love to a friend
Just another crazy dream for me
[ steel ]
Once you were mine and we were so happy
I never thought that the end soon would be
But now that you're gone and I'm so lonesome
It's just another crazy dream for me

Crazy dreams linger on...

I'M BLUE AGAIN
(W.S. Stevenson - Clyde C. Beam - Charles L. Jiles)
« © '59 Acuff-Rose Music, BMI »

I'm blue again my friends all said I'd be
I'm blue again because you're leavin' me
This heart of mine so well remembers you
Although I've lost your love to someone new

The nights are long so long my darling hear me
I pray that dawn will come and somehow you'll be near me
I'm blue again my heart is filled with tears
I'm blue again as I think of weasted years

(The nights are long so long my darling hear me)
I pray that dawn will come and somehow you'll be near me
I'm blue again my heart is filled with tears
I'm blue again as I think of weasted years
