Summer '71
"Hello John, this is Larry Butler. I have joined Columbia Records as a staff producer and I would like to see you."
We met, we talked, we cut records that we are still proud of today.
I watched, as we traveled around the world, people everywhere smile and listen to the man who spoke and sang truth. Styles of records and songs have come and gone but through all the fads and gimmicks there has remained one constant winner...Johnny Cash. Why? I believe it has a lot to do with truth. His records are as honest as he is. He is his records....his records are him. He will not cut a song because he believes it is a hit. He cuts a song because believes it is a song.
After several albums and a movie, I left to take a position with another record company.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU AGAIN
[ # 12 country hit ]
(Charlie Craig - Larry Atwood)
« © '75 Gee Whiz Music, BMI »
I was sittin' here thinkin' about ole time some ole time some old friends
And suddenly it crossed my mind that I would like to see you again
Remember how we used to walk and talk walk and talk holdin' hands
Said we loved each other I recall we made a lot of future plans
But the years have come and gone
And a whole lot has happened since then
But tonight babe your mem'ry's awfully strong on my mind
And I would like to see you again
It's funny how an ole flame comes back come on back and make you blue
But I just saw a picture of a railroad track and some old shack and me and you
Guess I'd better straighten out my mind straighten it out go to bed
And pray that I don't dream about ole times some ole times gone and dead
The years have come and gone...

LATELY
(Johnny Cash)
« © '77 Song Of Cash Music, ASCAP »
Lately I've been thinkin' that you don't love me at all
Lately I've been readin' and the writin' on the wall
Is sayin' looks like you'll be goin' and I've no sure way of knowing
But somehow that's what I've been thinkin' lately
Lately you've been sayin' things that I don't understand
Lately you look through me as if I'm another man
Instead of your ol' one and only I'm beginnin' to get lonely
I've been feelin' you'll be leavin' lately
[ piano - guitar ]
You might as well just stop it now cause I already know
You wouldn't hurt me less if you'd just go ahead and go
You know your heart's already gone so you might as well go on
Things have not been workin' for us lately
things have not been workin' for us lately

I WISH I WAS CRAZY AGAIN
(Bob McDill)
« © '77 Ranger Bob Music, ASCAP / Universal PolyGram Int, ASCAP »
[ with Waylon Jennings ]
I met an ole friend this mornin' and I stopped him and called him by name
I said the years haven't changed you but he said good Lord how you've changed
So we stood there and talked on the corner and remembered the good times we had
Then he asked if we're happy together and I only smiled and I said
Yeah she keeps me off the streets and she keeps me out of trouble
Sometimes at night Lord when I hear the wind
I wish I was crazy again yes I wish I was crazy again
[ guitar ]
Then we stopped in at a tavern we had us a round or two
We called ourselves ol' desperado ol' deperado as old friends are likely to do
We sat for a while and remembered then he said let's have just one more
I said I'd sure like to join you but I'd best be goin' on home
Yeah she keeps me off the streets...
She keeps me off the streets...

WHO'S GENE AUTRY
(Johnny Cash)
« © '77 Song Of Cash Music, ASCAP »
Whooppee tai ai ooh rockin' to and fro back in the saddle again
My little boy said (daddy who's Gene Autry) his ole movie was comin' on TV
And I said lemme tell you about him son and I took him upon my knee
Why when I was a little boy bout your size and just about ev'ry Saturday night
When I could scrape up a dime for the movies and when my daddy said alright
I'd be right downtown at the picture show like ev'rybody else that could
To see a handsome man on a big fine stallion goin' about doin' good
Singing whooppee tai ai ooh rockin' to and fro put him back in the saddle again
Whooppee tai ain yeh let him go on his way back in the saddle again
Why he could ride his horse and play his guitar and sing all at the same time
And I was ridin' right along there beside him on that broomstick pony of mine
And you know his pistol never ran out of bullets when the bad guys had to be stopped
And somehow his bullets never drew any blood but the bad guys dropped when he shot
Yeah ol' Gene was the image of justice and goodness and purity
And in the eyes of a poor little country boy he made the world look better to me
Singing whooppee tai ai ooh...
And you know the way he rescued the rancher's daughter
In sent a thrill right up the aisle
And the endin' would always send us home with a good victorious smile
Now you ask me who's Gene Autry well son go ahead and watch the show
And then ride off into the sunset with him like I did forty years ago
Singing whooppee tai ai ooh...

HURT SO BAD
(Johnny Cash)
« © '77 Song Of Cash Music, ASCAP »
I thought I could walk away and keep on goin' leave you flat and never once be sad
I didn't know the pain would keep on growin'
And I didn't know that it could hurt so bad hurt so bad hurt so bad
All night long I'm out a drivin' round ev'ry this and that away like mad
Always end up on your side of town I didn't know that it could hurt so bad
Hurt so bad hurt so bad
Don't give in go on and don't look back hold on to my pride I said
I won't let my heart turn my head
New day dawnin' on your world without me
You won't miss somethin' that you never had
You'll be making it alright without me
But I didn't know that it could hurt so bad
Hurt so bad hurt so bad
Don't give in go on and don't look back...
(Hurt so bad) hurt so bad

I DON'T THINK I COULD TAKE YOU BACK AGAIN
(Jerry Hensley - Earl Ball - Joel Sonier)
« © '77 Butter Creek Music, BMI »
Now you don't have to worry about me babe
Just hook 'em up and head on out to the places where you've been
Go ahead and fly like an eagle in the sky
And when you land you'll find I'm still your friend
But I don't think I could take you back again
Ain't no need to bother about me babe
Someone will come along and she will take me by the hand
Together we will walk where the grass is green and new
And I'll even think about you now and then
But I don't think I could take you back again
Hey where you goin' you can get there without me so goodbye go on goodbye
And remember though I'm setting you free I won't cry cry cry
I've seen you toss and turnin' in your sleep babe
Now your dreambags are packed you've got your ticket in your hand
When you love someone you want what's best for them
That's how it is and that's how it's always been
And I don't think I could take you back again
Hey where you goin'...

ABNER BROWN
(Johnny Cash)
« © '77 Song Of Cash Music, ASCAP »
Ev'ry town has its town bum I guess ours had one here's a song about him
I remember him fondly well his name was Abner Brown
I knew an ole drunk named Abner Brown and nobody knew when he came to town
But he spread good will to his fellow men and they let him sleep in the cotton gin
He could drink more brew than an army could
But he had more friends and he did more good
Than a lot of fine fancy people in our town so they tolerated Abner Brown
And all us kids were on his side cause he told us tales till our eyes grew wide
And he made us feel bout ten feet tall cause he had no kids but he claimed us all
And after school and on weekends you could find me down at the cotton gin
The truest friend that I ever found was a good ol' drunk named Abner Brown
Abner Brown I wish that I could see you once again
I believe that you'd stack up with all the mighty men
I've met and known in all the low and higher places that I've been
Thinkin' of you picks me up when I'm feelin' down
I thank the Lord for makin' Abner Brown
Lord take me back to the cotton land to Arkansas take me home again
Let me be the boy that I once have been lemme walk that road to the cotton gin
He's probably dead many years ago and gone the way that ol' drunks go
But I'd still like to sit me down talk to my ol' friend Abner Brown
Abner Brown I wish that I could see you once again...
I thank the Lord for makin' Abner Brown

AFTER TAXES
(Billy Ed Wheeler - Jerry Leiber)
« © '65 Jerry Leiber Music, ASCAP »
I feel so good come payday
I think of all the things I'm gonna buy when I pick up my pay
Don't you know but then they hand me that little brown envelope
I peep inside Lord I lose all hope
Cause from those total wages earned down to that net amount that's due
I feel the painful sense of loss between the two (humm federal tax)
There goes that bracelet for her arm(humm county tax )
There goes that new fence for my farm (humm state income tax)
There goes that brand new Pontiac (humm with holdin' tax)
You can dream about a honeymoon for two
You can dream but that's about all you can do
Cause by the time old Uncle Sam gets through with you
You can buy her a pair of hose a little powder for her nose
And take her down to Sloppy Joe's for beer and stew them are the facts after tax
You can dream about vacations in the sun
You can dream but you can't never have you one
Cause by the time your good old Uncle Sam gets done
You've got just enough for gas to see them city limits pass
And if you get back home fourth class I'd say you've won (humm federal tax)
There goes that bracelet for her arm (humm county tax)
There goes that new fence for my farm (humm luxary tax)
Send back that short wave radio (humm insurance income tax)
Cancel that trip to Mexico (humm state income tax)
Forget that brand new Pontiac (humm withholdin' tax )
There goes the shirt right off my back

[ # 2 country hit ]
(Hal Bynum - Dave Kirby)
« © '76 Tree Publishing, BMI »
[ with Waylon Jennings ]
Bet it ain't a rainin' back home bet your sister's still on the phone
Bet mama's in the kitchen cookin' fried chicken wishin' that I hadn't done wrong
Mama don't you worry about it none though ev'rything's gonna be alright mama
They're teachin' us a lotta new things in here mama
Things like there ain't no good in an evil hearted woman
And I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James
And you don't go writin' hot checks down in Mississippi
And there ain't no good chain gang
[ guitar ]
Papa's readin' yesterday's mail wishin' that the hay was all baled
I bet he's a wishin' we could go fishin' and here I am a layin' in jail
Well papa don't you worry about it none now ev'rything's gonna be alright papa
They're teachin' us a lesson today we're learnin' pretty well too
We've already learned a whole lotta stuff already
Things like there ain't no good in an evil hearted woman...
There ain't no good in an evil hearted woman...
[ guitar ]
There ain't no good in an evil hearted woman...
There ain't no good in an evil hearted woman...

THAT'S THE WAY IT IS
(Roger Bowling - Larry Butler)
« © '78 Blackwood Music, BMI / ATV Songs, BMI »
Remember back in school we learned the golden rule
Do unto others as you'd have them do to you
You're supposed to love me as much as I love you
It's a shame that ain't the way it is
Lovers in a movie on that great big screen
He treats her like she's a queen she treats him like a king
Wouldn't it be nice if life was lived that way
It's a shame that ain't the way it is
I'd like to start each mornin' with good mornin' dear
And end each night with a goodnight kiss
But all I have is your memory with me layin' here
It's a shame but that's the way it is
[ guitar ]
A love song tells a story of a good love goin' bad
Then paints a pretty pictures of that same love comin' back
I wish that I could sing it I wish that I could paint it
It's a shame that ain't the way it is
I'd like to start each mornin'...
It's a shame but that's the way it is

I'M ALRIGHT NOW
(Jerry Hensley)
« © '78 Song Of Cash Music, ASCAP »
I've been a rambler I've been a gambler
I've been in trouble a time or two
I known a lot good looking women
But Lord I bless the day that I found you
I'm alright now I'm alright now
I was ridin' on the devil's train but I got off somehow
I'm alright now I'm alright now
Gabriel let your trumpet blow I'm alright now
I've been demented been discontented
I've been in jail pretty close to hell
I've been frisky on sippin' whiskey yeah
And I done a few other things that I'll never tell
But I'm alright now I'm alright now...
I'm alright now I'm alright now...
I'm alright now I'm alright now...
